Urban logistics faces increasing pressure from rising population densities, escalating delivery demands, and constrained urban resources. Traditional logistics systems struggle to adapt to real-time urban dynamics, leading to inefficiencies, congestion, and environmental concerns. A key challenge lies in mobilizing underutilized assets, such as off-hour freight parking, and adopting multimodal solutions to navigate diverse and increasingly strict regulations, thereby enhancing both sustainability and operational efficiency. However, effective management and utilization of these assets require real-time visibility, cross-stakeholder collaboration, and intelligent decision-making. This study proposes a federated digital twin platform to enhance logistics operations efficiency by integrating asset management and knowledge-driven operations management, relying on real-time asset visibility and delivery knowledge, such as destination characteristics and preferred logistics modalities. Unlike traditional logistics planning, which relies on static assumptions, our approach adapts to urban constraints by continuously querying real-time asset information and integrating logistics-related knowledge into operations management. To assess the effectiveness of this approach, an optimization-based simulation framework with decision-making tools is developed. The study evaluates multi-echelon logistics networks, incorporating microhubs, dynamic transshipment points, and multimodal logistics options, including on-foot porters, E-cargo bikes, and Road Autonomous Delivery Robots (RADRs). Findings demonstrate that integrating federated digital twins with knowledge-driven approaches, such as destination-based clustering and modality selection, reduces costs by over 50 % and emissions by more than 30 %. This study underscores the transformative potential of digital twins in enabling real-time, knowledge-driven operations management, and fostering more sustainable and efficient urban logistics systems.

Supply chain resilience aims to enhance supply chain’s capacity to resist, respond, and recover from the disruptions. In different industries, products exhibit distinct attributes, such as, product value, deterioration rate, and criticality, resulting in varied resilience performance under logistic disruptions. The goal of this study is to investigate the significance of logistics service network in enhancing resilience within different supply chain typologies (onshoring and offshoring) across diverse industries, in face to transit time uncertainty induced by disruptions. We develop a robust optimization model with budgeted uncertainty to address the involved single-commodity multimodal freight routing problem under transit time uncertainty. To manage real-world large-scale instances, we devised a tailored adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm and validated its performance by computational experiments. Furthermore, we conducted realistic numerical experiments to validate the proposed approach, and sensitivity analyses to assess supply chain resilience from two perspectives: supply chain typologies and industry-specific attributes including product value, deterioration, and criticality. Moreover, the dynamics of modal shift under various disruptions were also analyzed. The study aims to provide practical tools and managerial insights to help industrial practitioners improve the resilience of their logistics service networks and emphasizes the importance of industry-specific considerations of supply chain typology in enhancing resilience.

This study introduces the first detailed hierarchical framework integrating Value Driver Trees (VDT) and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) to enhance operational excellence in mining haulage. Addressing gaps in fragmented performance metrics, static analyses, and limited decision support, the proposed five-tier model dynamically links strategic objectives to operational data. Applied to a nickel mining case study using three years of FMS data, it reproduces actual production with deviations consistently below 1%, identifies high-impact drivers, and quantifies improvement potentials of 17–50% relative to baseline when benchmarked against sustained high-performance periods. The study also delineates the boundary of validity of static VDTs, evidenced by a 0.6%-point underestimation of gains from loading-time improvements. By enabling scenario analysis, bottleneck identification, and cross-functional alignment, the framework transforms OEE from a diagnostic metric into a proactive decision-support tool. The contributions are threefold:a theoretical formalisation of VDT – OEE coupling, a reproducible validation-and-benchmarking methodology, and managerial decision support for capital allocation, target-setting, and data-driven operational excellence.

In the freight transport spot market, carriers face several challenges, including handling small-sized loads, managing short lead times, and dealing with uncertainties that can disrupt their existing networks and capacity. In this context, auction platforms assist carriers in developing strategies to maintain productivity and service levels. This paper introduces the freight transportation game, an online auction-based platform specifically designed for the freight spot market. The game equips players, acting as carriers, with tools to develop transportation strategies, optimize routes, and propose competitive rates to maximize profits. Players engage in decision making and competition, with key performance indicators evaluating their decisions. The game includes two scenarios; the first helps students understand the operational challenges that carriers face in spot market auctions, whereas the second encourages cooperation to enhance performance and overcome obstacles. Designed for a three-hour session, the game can be integrated into courses on supply chain management or transportation systems. The practical learnings for students from the game include understanding the complexity of constructing transport plans, recognizing the challenges of using online auction-based platforms, and experiencing the difficulties of managing spot market requests despite their benefits.

Understanding Creative Entrepreneurs’ Work Practices: The Varying Conversation between Artistic and Economic Rationales

Research on creative organizations often questions how artistic practices can be squared within the rational decision-making of economic thinking. This paper examines how the relational language, or conversation, between artistic and economic rationales unfolds for creative entrepreneurs. Through ethnographic work with a designer-entrepreneur, this paper presents a fine-grained analysis of the conversation the designer cultivates between artistic and economic rationales through work practices. We contribute to the literature about artistic and economic rationales at work, and more specifically to the concept of conversation. First, we show that high levels of conversing make way for low levels of conversing and vice versa. In the studio, the designer’s engagement with either rationale varies as the creative process progresses. Second, on a more global dynamic, we demonstrate the conversation is continuous. It relies on its variations, which ensure the balance between rationales in the long run. We also contribute to the field of creative entrepreneurship research. We identify here one type of creative entrepreneur, with what we call a ‘small is beautiful’ attitude. Far from the mythical figure of the entrepreneur, this unconventional entrepreneur aims for sustainable use of creative resources rather than growth at all costs.

This article is based on the study of an engineering organization that is experiencing major difficulties on its first new project in 10 years. It contributes to the literature on organizational forgetting in project-based organizations, examining how this phenomenon can be perceived and assessed. The analysis of the data provides a better understanding of the conditions under which a situation of accidental forgetting can be (mis)identified. The case reveals that, due to five sources of ambiguity linked to the identification process—latency, novelty, multiplicity, complexity, and credibility—the forgetting phenomenon may be underestimated or the subject of contradictory assessments within the organization.

What is the most efficient way of designing incentives in an organization? Over the past five decades, agency theory has provided various answers to this crucial question. This line of research suggests that, depending on the organizational context, the optimal approach to providing incentives may involve either relying on collective compensations or, conversely, employing relative performance evaluations. In the first scenario, cooperation among agents is the key aspect of the organization. In the second, competition prevails. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of this extensive literature with the aim of understanding the conditions under which one or the other type of incentive schemes is more desirable for the principal of the organization. To this end, we use a flexible and versatile model capable of addressing a wide range of scenarios characterized by different technologies, information constraints, and behavioral norms.

This paper examines the determinants of productivity heterogeneity among construction firms, integrating both firm-level and local contextual factors. Using a longitudinal dataset of 78,598 firms over 2009–2019, we estimate total factor productivity (TFP) and use a multilevel model across 287 labour market areas in metropolitan France. This approach allows us to separate firm-specific from location-specific effects and explains how the productivity heterogeneity can be attributed to each level. Our results show that firm characteristics significantly affect TFP. Local conditions also play a key role: higher unemployment reduces productivity, whereas higher employment density and median income enhance it. This study contributes by applying a multilevel framework to the construction sector, using longitudinal data for precise estimation, and employing TFP rather than traditional labour productivity as the performance measure. Our findings highlight the joint influence of firm and regional factors on productivity, providing insights for policymakers and managers aiming to improve firm performance and regional economic outcomes in the construction sector. Our results remain robust across different firm size categories, alternative TFP measures, French construction sector sub-sectors and Mundlak's (1978) approach to correcting for heterogeneity bias.
