SUMMARY:o discuss their book Nature-Made Economy Cod\, Capital\, and the Great Economization of the Ocean
DESCRIPTION:Le séminaire Invité.e.s du CSI accueillera \nDonald MacKenzie \nProfessor at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Social and Political Science \nOnline Advertising\, Materiality and \nBanal Political Economy \n  \n  \n\n\n\n  \nPrès de 400 milliards de publicités en ligne sont diffusées chaque jour dans le monde et la plupart parvient aux usagers via des enchères automatisées quasi instantanées de chaque opportunité publicitaire. \nAround 400 billion online ads are shown daily worldwide\, many of them finding their way to users via near instantaneous\, automated auctions of each individual advertising opportunity. Building on the work of\, e.g.\, Beauvisage\, Beuscart and Mellet\, this paper examines this giant-scale\, technologically highly sophisticated activity via two closely related analytical lenses. The first is the material politics of centralised versus decentralised configurations of these auctions\, which involves issues ranging from challenges to Google’s market power to the environmental politics of online advertising’s carbon emissions. The second is banal political economy: the routine ways in which money is made\, especially via occupancy of crucial material positions in digital advertising. The paper will end with a speculation: that each of us carries ‘material micromonopolies’ around with us all the time\, each deeply embedded in the apps on our mobile phones. The longest second: Header bidding and the material politics of online advertising. Economy and Society\, 52:3\, 554-578. \n  \nPhoto source: Donald MacKenzie\, « Library of Mistakes »\, School of Social and Political Science\, The University of Edinburgh\, 2021.
