La chimie et l\u2019industrialisation des techniques affranchissent la construction des contraintes du relief, du climat et de la g\u00e9ologie\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0abstraire le sol\u00a0\u00bb pour faire passer la route \u2013 et supporter le poids des camions \u2013 devient un leitmotiv de \u00ab\u00a0l\u2019am\u00e9nagement du territoire\u00a0\u00bb qui n\u00e9cessite l\u2019extraction et le d\u00e9placement continus de milliards de m\u00e8tres cubes de terres, sable et granulat.<\/p>\n Si les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts se font rapidement sentir dans le lit des rivi\u00e8res, les abords des carri\u00e8res et dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re \u2013 sans parler de la mortalit\u00e9 sur les routes \u2013, la fr\u00e9n\u00e9sie du bitume n\u2019a jamais faibli\u00a0: il faut sans cesse r\u00e9parer, \u00e9paissir, \u00e9tendre cette infrastructure d\u00e9voreuse d\u2019hectares et d\u2019argent public. Ce livre offre une remarquable vue en coupe de cet engrenage technique, \u00e9conomique et politique. Alors que les luttes se multiplient contre le mod\u00e8le routier et l\u2019industrie cimenti\u00e8re, il identifie quelques verrous qui rendent le b\u00e2ti si pesant. An environmental history of major infrastructures<\/strong><\/p>\n In the post-war decades, thousands of kilometers of roads and highways were built to support the intensification of traffic, connecting metropolises with industrial zones, ports, airports, power plants, and tourist resorts across reclaimed agricultural landscapes. This was the beginning of a \u201cGreat Acceleration\u201d that turned the production of space on its head. On construction sites, concrete flowed at full speed, while the noise of machines (which did not go on strike) replaced the tumult of excavation workers. Chemistry and the industrialization of techniques freed construction from the constraints of topography, climate and geology: the \u201cabstraction\u201d of the ground to make way for roads \u2013 and to support the weight of trucks \u2013 became a leitmotif of \u201cregional planning\u201d, requiring the continuous extraction and movement of billions of cubic meters of earth, sand and aggregate.<\/p>\n While the damage to riverbeds, quarry environments, and the atmosphere is rapidly becoming apparent \u2013 not to mention the deaths on the roads \u2013 the bitumen frenzy has never abated: this infrastructure, which gobbles up hectares of land and public money, must be constantly repaired, thickened, and expanded. This book provides a remarkable overview of this technical, economic and political spiral. At a time when the struggle against the road model and the cement industry is multiplying, it identifies some of the obstacles that make the built environment so burdensome. A prerequisite for thinking about lighter perspectives.<\/p>\n Nelo Magalh\u00e3es<\/a> holds a PhD in mathematics and economics. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the CRH (Centre de recherches historiques), EHESS \u2013 CNRS (UMR 8558).
