Back cover<\/em>: La r\u00e9sistance bact\u00e9rienne aux antibiotiques constitue l\u2019un des d\u00e9fis majeurs de la sant\u00e9 publique au XXIe<\/sup> si\u00e8cle. Mais comment la combattre ? La th\u00e9rapie phagique appara\u00eet comme une r\u00e9ponse possible. Cette pratique m\u00e9connue, pourtant centenaire, consiste \u00e0 utiliser certaines propri\u00e9t\u00e9s des virus bact\u00e9riophages, \u00ab mangeurs de bact\u00e9ries \u00bb, pour traiter les infections bact\u00e9riennes. Charlotte Brives en expose brillamment l\u2019histoire, les difficult\u00e9s et les potentialit\u00e9s : des malades cherchant \u00e0 soigner des infections chroniques aux collectifs tentant d\u2019\u00e9tablir de nouveaux cadres r\u00e9glementaires, des recherches en laboratoire \u00e0 la constitution d\u2019essais cliniques, c\u2019est toute la complexit\u00e9 et la vari\u00e9t\u00e9 des relations entre humains, phages et bact\u00e9ries qu\u2019elle met au jour.
\nIl ne s\u2019agit plus, en effet, de contr\u00f4ler et de ma\u00eetriser les microbes, mais de composer avec eux. La phagoth\u00e9rapie, elle, respecte ces \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes qu\u2019ont d\u00e9vast\u00e9s les formes de production et d\u2019exploitation des \u00eatres vivants rendues possibles par les antibiotiques. Elle n\u2019a certes rien d\u2019un rem\u00e8de miracle, mais elle pourrait pr\u00e9server les mol\u00e9cules chimiques encore efficaces tout en \u00e9tant accessible au plus grand nombre.<\/p>\n

Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is one of the major public health challenges of the 21st century. But how can it be combated? Phage therapy appears to be a possible answer. This little-known, yet centuries-old practice involves using certain properties of bacteriophage viruses, \u201cbacteria eaters\u201d, to treat bacterial infections. Charlotte Brives brilliantly outlines their history, difficulties and potential: from patients seeking to treat chronic infections to collectives attempting to establish new regulatory frameworks, from laboratory research to the setting up of clinical trials, she brings to light the complexity and variety of the relationships between humans, phages and bacteria. It\u2019s no longer a question of controlling and mastering microbes, but of dealing with them. Phage-therapy respects the ecosystems devastated by the forms of production and exploitation of living beings made possible by antibiotics. It\u2019s by no means a miracle cure, but it could preserve the chemical molecules that are still effective, while making them accessible to as many people as possible.<\/p>\n
