Made in France within a ministerial entity\u2009\u2013\u2009INSEE\u2019s Department of National Accounts\u2009\u2013\u2009they convey a conception of the economy as an evolutionary (we call \u201cgrowth\u201d the variations of the economy over time) and global (all French production expressed in currency) object. Once made public, they are marked by a form of accounting objectivity: for the majority of its users, and despite many criticisms, the accounting representation of the economy is seen as a solid and indisputable object, a reference knowledge on macroeconomic reality. Based on a nine-month ethnographic survey within the National Accounts Department, the thesis analyses the fabric of this accounting objectivity of the economy. At the crossroads of the sociology of quantification, the sociology of science, and the sociology of activity, it questions the way in which the national accounts department produces and stabilizes a shared and reference knowledge on the national economy. The thesis describes the department as an organization structured around a distributed work of articulation of accounting categories and data (that mainly come from the French statistical system). Far from being a mechanical filling of accounting tables, the accounting activity involves a real intervention on the data, to match them to the accounting framework: identification, collection, formatting, totalization, arbitration, stabilization, narration, iterations, are operations that contribute to the consistency of a representation of the economy. The thesis shows that the global and evolutionary nature of the economy is not obvious, but must be produced on a day-to-day basis. Its existence in the form of a global system of relationships, as well as its ability to vary over time, is the result of accounting activity. The national economy, as we know it through the national accounts, thus constitutes a possible and relatively singular way of objectifying the economy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>R\u00e9sum\u00e9 de la th\u00e8se<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Les comptes nationaux, dont l\u2019indicateur du PIB, constituent la repr\u00e9sentation de l\u2019\u00e9conomie nationale la plus partag\u00e9e et la plus l\u00e9gitime. Fabriqu\u00e9s en France au sein d\u2019une entit\u00e9 minist\u00e9rielle \u2014 le d\u00e9partement des comptes nationaux de l\u2019Insee \u2014 ils v\u00e9hiculent une conception de l\u2019\u00e9conomie \u00e9volutive (on appelle \u00ab\u00a0croissance\u00a0\u00bb les variations de l\u2019\u00e9conomie dans le temps) et globale (l\u2019ensemble de la production fran\u00e7aise exprim\u00e9e en monnaie). Une fois rendus publics, ils sont marqu\u00e9s par une forme d\u2019objectivit\u00e9 comptable\u00a0: pour la majorit\u00e9 de ses usagers, et en d\u00e9pit de nombreuses critiques, la repr\u00e9sentation comptable de l\u2019\u00e9conomie est appr\u00e9hend\u00e9e comme un objet solide et indiscutable, une connaissance de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence sur la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 macro\u00e9conomique. Fond\u00e9e sur une enqu\u00eate ethnographique de neuf mois au sein du d\u00e9partement des comptes nationaux, la th\u00e8se analyse la fabrique de cette objectivit\u00e9 comptable de l\u2019\u00e9conomie. Au croisement de la sociologie de la quantification, de la sociologie des sciences, et de la sociologie de l\u2019activit\u00e9, elle interroge la mani\u00e8re dont le d\u00e9partement des comptes produit et stabilise une connaissance partag\u00e9e et de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence sur l\u2019\u00e9conomie nationale. La th\u00e8se d\u00e9crit le d\u00e9partement comme une organisation structur\u00e9e autour d\u2019une activit\u00e9 qui, r\u00e9partie entre diff\u00e9rentes \u00e9quipes, est envisag\u00e9e comme un travail d\u2019articulation de cat\u00e9gories comptables et de donn\u00e9es, principalement issues de l\u2019appareil statistique fran\u00e7ais. Loin d\u2019un remplissage machinal de tableaux comptables, l\u2019activit\u00e9 comptable t\u00e9moigne d\u2019une v\u00e9ritable intervention sur les donn\u00e9es, pour les apparier au cadre comptable\u00a0: l\u2019identification, la collecte, la mise au format, la totalisation, l\u2019arbitrage, la stabilisation, la mise en r\u00e9cit, les it\u00e9rations, sont autant d\u2019op\u00e9rations d\u00e9ploy\u00e9es qui participent de la prise de consistance d\u2019une repr\u00e9sentation de l\u2019\u00e9conomie. La th\u00e8se montre que le caract\u00e8re global et \u00e9volutif de l\u2019\u00e9conomie n\u2019a rien d\u2019\u00e9vident, mais doit au contraire \u00eatre produit au jour le jour. Son existence sous la forme d\u2019un syst\u00e8me global de relations, de m\u00eame que sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 varier au cours du temps, est le r\u00e9sultat de l\u2019activit\u00e9 comptable.
