SUMMARY:The Business Theory Chair is pleased to invite you to the next session of the seminar “Businesses\, Responsibilities\, and Civilizations.”
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Business Theory Chair is pleased to invite you to the next session of the seminar “Businesses\, Responsibilities\, and Civilizations.” \nNovember 25\,  2025 \nfrom 4pm to 6pm (hybrid version) \nTaming Corporate Power in the 21th century \nwith Jerry Davis \nProfessor of Business Administration \nand Professor of Sociology at University of Michigan \nMines Paris PSL 75006 PARIS \n  \nRegistration \n  \nSummary: There is broad consensus in the US that monopolistic corporations have grown too powerful and that we need to revive antitrust to take on the “curse of bigness.” But information and communication technologies have fundamentally altered the operations of our economy in ways that undermine the basic categories we use to understand it. Nationality\, industry\, firm\, size\, employee\, and other fundamental terms are increasingly perplexing. If we want to understand and tame the new sources of economic power\, we need a new diagnosis and a new set of tools. This talk will describe the forces shaping corporate power in America today\, and where we might go next \nBio:  Jerry Davis received his PhD from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and taught at Northwestern and Columbia before moving to the University of Michigan\, where he is the Gilbert and Ruth Whitaker Professor of Business Administration and Professor of Sociology. He writes about corporate power\, the threats to democracy posed by Big Tech\, and the possibilities for alternative forms of enterprise that are more humane and democratic. \n

SUMMARY:Arpentage & Ecriture. STS Reading Workshop #3
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 14\, 2025\, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. \nCentre Maurice Halbwachs\n48 Boulevard Jourdan\, 75014 Paris \nMetro Line 4 (Porte d’Orléans)\, RER B (Cité Universitaire)\, or Tram Line 3a (Montsouris) \n  \n \n  \n\nRegistration: Please register here (deadline for registration on November 10). \nTo receive updates\,\nsubscribe to the “Arpentage et Écriture” newsletter \n  \nThe workshop aims to provide a welcoming space for young researchers of all disciplinary backgrounds who are interested in the study of science and technology in France. The workshop offers a forum for discussion based on group readings\, fundamental concept discussions\, and STS writing practices. \nThe workshop is organized around two primary activities: \nCollective Reading and Analysis (Exploration /Arpentage)\nMost sessions involve exploring a reference text or recent publication in the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS). This approach begins with dividing a book or collection of articles into equal parts to facilitate collective exploration. During the first part of the session\, participants read and take notes on different topics\, such as theoretical concepts and arguments\, links to their research\, empirical examples\, and questions or points of confusion. In the second part of the session\, these notes are shared to build a collective understanding and deepen the discussion around the text and key concepts in the field of STS. \nWriting in the Humanities and Social Sciences\nOne to two sessions per year are dedicated to discussing scientific writing practices: \n– Presenting research findings to respondents or peers.\n– Writing an ethnographic text and constructing a scientific narrative. \nAtelier #3\nThis session\, organized in the form of an “Arpentage / Exploration”\, will be devoted to \nPolitiques de la nature. Comment faire entrer les sciences en démocratie\, Bruno Latour\, La Découverte\, 1999 \n\nSeminar Details\nThe seminar details are as follows (they will also be sent to participants by email):\n– In-person in Paris at different locations to discover each other’s laboratories and universities\n– Half-day sessions (four hours\, including a snack break)\n– Two types of sessions: Reading Workshop: Theory\, Concepts\, Methodology and Writing Workshop: Analysis\, Writing\, Fieldwork\n– No work is required beforehand. Reading is done on site collectively using methods such as arpentage\, which explains the extended duration of the sessions.\n– A friendly atmosphere: we suggest sharing a meal after each session. \nWorkshop Organizers and Facilitators\nAurélien Béranger – PhD Candidate\, Laboratoire Costech\, Université de Technologie de Compiègne.\nEmail: aurelien.beranger@utc.fr \nAlexia Pronesti – PhD Candidate\, GSPR & Cermes3\, EHESS.\nEmail: alexia.pronesti@ehess.fr \nSolène Sarnowski – PhD Candidate\, Centre de Sociologie de l’Innovation (CSI)\, Mines Paris & Télécom-Paris\, Institut Polytechnique de Paris\, NOS.\nEmail: solene.sarnowski@minesparis.psl.eu \nDorian Groll – PhD Candidate\, Centre Maurice Halbwachs\, CAK.\nEmail: dorian.groll@ens.psl.eu \n  \nSeminar program\nLearn more about the 2025-2026 Program for the seminar ‘Arpentage & Écriture: STS Reading Workshop’.

SUMMARY:Séminaire ‘Maintenir. Architecture et maintenance\, ce qui nous tient’
DESCRIPTION:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’ \nBuilding and maintaining in the bioclimatic era – Feedback \nwith Nolwenn Bordron\, architect at the Department of\nPublic Constructions and Architecture (DCPA) of the City of Paris \n  \n\nFrom innovative building techniques to reinterpreted traditional skills\, bioclimatic design and the use of organic or geosourced materials are part of a significant shift in architectural practices\, attempting to overcome the limitations of strict regulations and industrial production logic. The plurality of terms—frugal\, low-tech\, sustainable\, passive\, and eco-responsible—reflects the diversity of approaches and their experimental dimension. Each approach offers a new perspective and way of doing things in a finite world. \nIn this seventh session\, the seminar will give the floor to a public project owner\, the City of Paris\, to discuss the changes brought about by these design approaches from the perspective of the operator responsible for maintaining structures whose sustainability is measured in terms of planetary limits and material conditions for long-term preservation. \nFrom attention to materials to consideration of conditions of use and adjustments to equipment\, how are maintenance activities being redeployed in an architecture that seeks to protect both the environment and humans? How can maintenance workers’ expertise be accounted for when it largely escapes the normative and creative processes that punctuate design? This pivotal session examines different approaches to making building last and explores the links between architecture and maintenance through the lens of the relationship between the built environment and its surroundings. \n  \n  \n  \n\nDate: Friday\, November 14\, 2025\, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. \nVenue: École des Mines\, 60 Boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006. Room Vendôme \n  \nParticipation is free but registration is required. Please register here.\nAttendance is limited. Kindly let us know if you are unable to attend. \nThe seminar will be held in French. \n  \n\nOrganized by architectural agency SCAU and Jérôme Denis.\nFind out more about the seminar program and objectives \n

SUMMARY:Ulrike Felt\, Guest speaker at the seminar co-organized by CSI and LISIS
DESCRIPTION:The seminar organized by CSI and LISIS welcomes \nUlrike Felt \nDepartment of Science and Technology Studies\, University of Vienna \nto discuss her book \nAcademic Times \nContesting the Chronopolitics of Research \n  \n \nDiscussants: Lucas Brunet (LISIS) and Didier Torny (CSI) \n  \nAbout this book\nThis open access bookexplores the hidden politics of time—the chronopolitics—that profoundly shapes the contours of academic life and knowledge production in contemporary universities. Moving beyond familiar critiques of academic acceleration\, Ulrike Felt explores the diversity of time generators and the resultant complex\, multilayered timescapes that govern scholarly work and life. The book examines the tensions inherent in models of linear careers and in simultaneous experiences of speed and waiting\, and asks questions about the ownership of time. In doing so\, it scrutinizes relations between time and quality\, and points to the impact of time on how and what we can know\, revealing how these temporal regimes create deep asynchronicities and fragmentations and perpetuate injustices and exclusions. Arguing for a more mindful approach to research\, Felt advocates for rethinking academia through the lens of time\, emphasizing the need for temporal care work in order to achieve sustainable and responsible change. Aimed at researchers\, academic leaders\, and policymakers\, the book offers a compelling vision for a more responsive\, long-term\, and equitable academic future—one that challenges neoliberal models that prioritise speed\, competitiveness\, and efficiency. \nUlrike Felt\, Academic Times: Contesting the Chronopolitics of Research\, Palgrave Macmillan\, 2025. SUMMARY:Seminar “Businesses\, Responsibilities\, Civilizations”
DESCRIPTION:  \nSeminar “Businesses\, Responsibilities\, Civilizations”  \nThe Business Theory Chair is pleased to invite you to the next session of the session. \n“Businesses\, Responsibilities\, Civilizations”  \nNovember 20\, 2025 \nfrom 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  \n (hybrid version) \nCorporate responsibility in a context of socialization \nwith Pierre-Yves Gomez \nEconomist\, professor emeritus at emlyon Business School\, founder of the French Institute of Corporate Directors  \nat Mines Paris PSL \n60 boulevard saint Michel \n75006 PARIS \n(Mandatory registration) \nRegistration \nCorporate responsibility \nAbstract: Corporate social and economic responsibility cannot be understood in isolation: it takes on meaning in relation to the socio-political environment that shapes it and to which it contributes. Since the 1970s\, speculative capitalism and the specific social consensus that accompanies it have formed the frame of reference for contemporary businesses. \nAfter analyzing financialization (as a process of valuation) and digitalization (as a technical reference system)\, my work focuses on a third movement that structures this model of capitalism: socialization\, understood as the claim to govern organizations in response to society’s expectations. This lecture will address the origin and content of the concept and its implications for understanding and implementing corporate responsibility today. \nPierre-Yves Gomez is an economist\, professor emeritus at emlyon business school\, founder of the French Institute of Corporate Governance\, and former visiting professor and researcher at London Business School. A specialist in the role of business in society\, he has published some fifteen books on governance\, labor\, and the transformation of capitalism. A columnist for Le Monde newspaper\, he is also a member of several boards of directors and corporate mission committees. \n

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Léo Magnin (LISIS)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nLéo Magnin \n  \nto discuss his book \nLa vie sociale des haies \nEnquête sur l’écologisation des mœurs \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Laure Lavigne Delville and Louison Magro \nQuatrième de couverture : Tandis que le monde devient de moins en moins habitable\, peut-on déceler les indices d’une transformation des manières d’interagir avec l’environnement ? \nAs the world becomes less habitable\, are there signs that we are transforming the way we interact with the environment? Following in the footsteps of Norbert Elias\, who studied the civilization of manners through the lens of the handkerchief\, Léo Magnin explores the ecologization of manners through an unassuming object: the hedge. For if trees and bushes have a well-known biological life\, their eventful social life remains to be discovered.\nHedges were massively destroyed during agricultural modernization after 1945 but are now widely acclaimed as reservoirs of biodiversity\, carbon sinks\, sources of renewable energy\, erosion barriers\, and landscape features. What explains such a reversal? Magnin investigates the traces of hedge requalification\, such as a farmer’s concern about protection\, a planter’s hesitations on his plot\, maintenance costs\, pruning preferences\, scientific hedgerow studies\, digital mapping\, and the surprising politicization by governments and villagers.\nFrom farmyards to ministerial offices\, La Vie sociale des haies (The Social Life of Hedgerows) investigates the various dimensions of the greening process. It outlines the social dynamics that are running out of steam\, continuing\, or reinventing themselves in the face of environmental challenges. Following the maze of hedgerows sheds light on the twists and turns of history that shape the contradictions of our present\, as well as its promising trials and errors. \n\nLéo Magnin is a sociologist and a researcher at the CNRS at LISIS (Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Science\, Innovation\, and Society). The primary focus of his research is on analyzing the control of greening\, addressing how legal categories\, thresholds\, and indicators are negotiated politically\, the unintended effects of environmental monitoring policies\, work activities involving digital tools\, the phenomena that control techniques allow us to see and not see\, as well as the way in which the powers to reward and punish are socially distributed in the agricultural world. He is the author\, with Rémi Rouméas and Robin Basier\, of Polices environnementales sous contraintes\, Éditions Rue D’Ulm\, 2024. \n  \nLéo Magnin\, La vie sociale des haies. SUMMARY:Innovation Management Seminar
DESCRIPTION:After several years of development at the CNAM (Conservatoire national des Arts et Métiers)\, the serious game “Rêves de vélo” (Dreams of Cycling) was launched in May 2025 on the France Université Numérique platform. It takes place at the turn of the 1860s\, during the emergence of the velocipede\, the precursor to the modern bicycle\, with France as the pioneering country. Through an interactive comic strip\, each player takes on the role of three characters with contrasting profiles who experience adventures in a reconstructed historical environment. A serious game does not just simulate reality: it creates situations for experimentation\, decision-making\, and critical thinking\, putting players in the position of innovators. The history of the bicycle allows us to explore the multiple dimensions (technical\, organizational\, economic\, social\, legal\, etc.) of an innovative process. Gilles Garel and Loïc Petitgirard will present the game’s design and how the playful experience can be used to teach innovation. \n  \n  \nInnovation Management seminar Séminaire Management de l’innovation | Wednesday\, November 26\, 2025- 8:45 am – 10:45ma\n Mines Paris (60\, boulevard Saint-Michel – Paris) \nRegistration closes on Tuesday\, November 25\, 2025\, at 3:00 p.m. \nRegistration
