SUMMARY:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’
DESCRIPTION:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’ \nAttachments and heritage: figures from the ACMH \n  \nWhen it comes to heritage\, in France the “chief architect” is like a caretaker at the bedside of a living\, changing\, aging structure. \nWhat determines value? Who will maintain it? Confronted with the obsolescence of materials and the accumulation of layers of time\, conservation must contend with the living. Maintaining heritage invites us to compose with the intertwining of our fragilities. \nBetween care and attachment\, the next session of the Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about seminar will explore the links between architecture and maintenance through the practice of two heritage architects\, Charlotte Langlois\, heritage architect and co-managing partner of the Point 05 agency\, and Pierre Dufour\, chief architect of historic monuments and co-managing partner of the Antoine Dufour Architectes agency. \n  \n\nDate: Friday\, October 10\, 2025\, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. \nVenue: SCAU – 35 rue Tournefort\, Paris 5e \n  \nParticipation is free but registration is required. Please register here.\nAttendance is limited. Kindly let us know if you are unable to attend. \nThe seminar will be held in French. \n  \n  \nOrganized by architectural agency SCAU and Jérôme Denis.\nFind out more about the seminar program and objectives.

SUMMARY:Cerna Research seminar will welcome Nick de Roos (Liverpool)
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that Nick de Roos (Liverpool) will be the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. The seminar will take place Wednesday\, October 15\, 2025 at 4 PM in Salle des Colonnes. \n\nNick will present his paper: \nNegotiating Coordination: A Study in Retail Gasoline \nSince antitrust laws prohibit direct communications between competitors\, firms often must infer from observed behavior in the marketplace how rivals will respond to various scenarios (and what rivals believe about how others will respond). A substantial theoretical and experimental literature has examined how agents facing strategic uncertainty reach equilibrium through complex interactive learning processes. However\, empirical research into the impacts of strategic uncertainty on firm behavior and market performance is virtually nonexistent. This paper studies the use of market prices in coordinating and renegotiating market outcomes absent direct communication. We examine a gradual\, sometimes disruptive\, equilibrium transition using a unique dataset of daily and hourly station-level prices from an urban gasoline market. Using an information-sharing platform to observe rivals’ prices\, the firms transition over seven years from coordinated focal pricing rules to a structure involving price leadership. Along the path\, firms appear to engage in various forms of experimentation\, signaling\, and manipulation (of rivals’ expectations) that strongly resemble behavior expected under strategic uncertainty. We observe recurrent deviations from focal pricing rules that entail substantial price undercutting and business stealing without immediate punishment. We also uncover a price war involving renegotiation\, punishments\, and resolution strictly through prices. Lastly\, we document how\, absent direct communication\, firms can actively modify their coordinated pricing structure to limit rivals’ incentives to deviate or undercut\, enabling greater long-run stability and higher prices. Overall\, our findings establish that prices can yield a sufficiently rich communication medium for implementing and renegotiating coordinated pricing structures\, but doing so requires firms to overcome significant strategic uncertainty. We discuss implications for theories of collusion and for policies aimed at detecting and prosecuting cartels. \n

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Jeanne Ételain (École supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nJeanne Ételain \nto discuss her book \nZones \nTerre\, sexes et science-fiction \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Lou Stührenberg and Laurine Lièvremont \nQuatrième de couverture : Zone : ce terme omniprésent reste pourtant insaisissable. \nZone: A ubiquitous term\, yet one that remains elusive. In a surprising conceptual investigation at the crossroads of geography\, psychoanalysis\, and science fiction\, Jeanne Etelain explores how the “zone” has become central to understanding space in the contemporary context of the planet’s habitability crisis. The zone appears as a spatial modality that defies usual categories and confronts us with the power of space\, whether it be nature\, the Earth\, or the body. \nJeanne Ételain\, Zones. Terre\, sexes et science-fiction. Flammarion\, coll.  Terra Incognita\, 2025 \nJeanne Etelain teaches philosophy and contemporary theory at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier. She is also an associate researcher at the HAR (History of Arts and Representations) laboratory at Paris Nanterre University. Her research focuses on the philosophy of ecology\, space\, and the Earth\, particularly new materialisms\, feminist epistemologies\, and the renewal of contemporary metaphysics. \n  \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. It is open upon registration. \nGuest seminar series program \n \nDate: Tuesday\, October 21\, 2025\, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. \nVenue : room Chevalier. Via videoconference for the external audience. SUMMARY:Arpentage & Ecriture. STS Reading Workshop #2
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 23\, 2025\, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. \n \nChange of venue. The workshop will take place at: \n\n \nUTC de Paris\, 62 Bd de Sébastopol\, 75003 Paris \nroom Barthès \n \n\n\nRegistration: Please register here (deadline for registration is October 21\, 2025) \nTo receive updates\,\nsubscribe to the “Arpentage et Écriture” newsletter \n  \nThe workshop aims to provide a welcoming space for young researchers of all disciplinary backgrounds who are interested in the study of science and technology in France. The workshop offers a forum for discussion based on group readings\, fundamental concept discussions\, and STS writing practices. \nThe workshop is organized around two primary activities: \nCollective Reading and Analysis (Exploration /Arpentage)\nMost sessions involve exploring a reference text or recent publication in the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS). This approach begins with dividing a book or collection of articles into equal parts to facilitate collective exploration. During the first part of the session\, participants read and take notes on different topics\, such as theoretical concepts and arguments\, links to their research\, empirical examples\, and questions or points of confusion. In the second part of the session\, these notes are shared to build a collective understanding and deepen the discussion around the text and key concepts in the field of STS. \nWriting in the Humanities and Social Sciences\nOne to two sessions per year are dedicated to discussing scientific writing practices: \n– Presenting research findings to respondents or peers.\n– Writing an ethnographic text and constructing a scientific narrative. \nAtelier #2\nThis session\, organized in the form of an “Arpentage / Exploration”\, will be devoted to \nModest_Witness@Second_Millennium. FemaleMan_Meets_OncoMouse. \nFeminism and Technoscience\, Donna J. Haraway\nRoutledge\, 2018 \nSeminar Details\nThe seminar details are as follows (they will also be sent to participants by email):\n– In-person in Paris at different locations to discover each other’s laboratories and universities\n– Half-day sessions (four hours\, including a snack break)\n– Two types of sessions: Reading Workshop: Theory\, Concepts\, Methodology and Writing Workshop: Analysis\, Writing\, Fieldwork\n– No work is required beforehand. Reading is done on site collectively using methods such as arpentage\, which explains the extended duration of the sessions.\n– A friendly atmosphere: we suggest sharing a meal after each session. \nWorkshop Organizers and Facilitators\nAurélien Béranger – PhD Candidate\, Laboratoire Costech\, Université de Technologie de Compiègne.\nEmail: aurelien.beranger@utc.fr \nAlexia Pronesti – PhD Candidate\, GSPR & Cermes3\, EHESS.\nEmail: alexia.pronesti@ehess.fr \nSolène Sarnowski – PhD Candidate\, Centre de Sociologie de l’Innovation (CSI)\, Mines Paris & Télécom-Paris\, Institut Polytechnique de Paris\, NOS.\nEmail: solene.sarnowski@minesparis.psl.eu \nDorian Groll – PhD Candidate\, Centre Maurice Halbwachs\, CAK.\nEmail: dorian.groll@ens.psl.eu \n  \nSeminar program\nLearn more about the 2025-2026 Program for the seminar ‘Arpentage & Écriture: STS Reading Workshop’.

SUMMARY:CERNA Research Seminar will welcome Annika Herr (Hannover)
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that Annika Herr (Hannover) will be the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. The seminar will take place Octobre 29\, 2025 at 4 PM in Salle Chevalier. \nAnnika will present her paper: \nMarket Concentration and Prescribing Behaviour in Primary Care” (NHS England\, with Nils Gutacker and David Probst) \nA significant proportion of primary care expenditures arise from the prescription of drugs\, with physicians having some degree of autonomy in deciding whether and which drug to choose for a particular patient. While medical reasons and guidelines primarily influence these decisions\, economic factors may also play a role. Given the ongoing trend of practice mergers or closures in the English NHS over several decades\, we investigate the per-patient prescribing volume and costs in increasingly concentrated markets. We employ quarterly data from 2015 to 2019 for 7\,300 practices in the English national health system. Concentration is evaluated using a population-weighted Herfindahl-Hirschman Index that is based on predicted patient flows rather than observed ones to address endogeneity concerns. Our findings suggest that greater market concentration leads to a reduction in total drug prescriptions and their associated costs\, particularly for generics and over-the-counter drugs. However\, the concentration effect does not appear to influence primary care prescriptions for insulin. Therefore\, the impact is more significant for drugs that allow GPs greater discretion in their prescribing behavior. \nThere will be an opportunity to schedule individual meetings and/or join lunch/dinner with Annika before the seminar. \nPlease enter your preferred time slot here
