SUMMARY:Cerna seminar with Biliana Yontcheva (DICE)
DESCRIPTION:The seminar with Biliana Yontcheva (DICE) will take place at 16:00 in Salle Vendome. \nBiliana will talk about here research on: \n\nChain formation and consumer welfare on the retail pharmacy market \n“The present paper evaluates the effects of deregulated ownership and horizontal integration on the retail pharmacy market. Using data on the full population of reimbursed prescriptions in Slovakia in 2017\, we examine whether outlets of pharmacy chains perform better than their independent counterparts in terms of consumer preferences and operating costs. Our preliminary findings indicate that consumers perceive pharmacy chains as having higher quality on average than independent outlets\, although there is substantial heterogeneity in the effects\, both across chain brands and across consumer types. We do not find evidence for substantial productivity gains due to chain affiliation. The growth of chain formats appears to be driven by an optimized location selection policy\, which allows companies to realize substantial economies of scale.” \nSee you there! \n  \nBest wishes\,\nSven

SUMMARY:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” will welcome Sébastien Chailleux and Andreas Folkers
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” will welcome \n \nSébastien Chailleux and Andreas Folkers \n \nGeoengineering \n \nThis session will explore the promises of geoengineering through analyzes of eco-modernist projects promoting innovations designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. \nSébastien Chailleux (Centre Émile Durkheim-UMR5116\, Sciences Po Bordeaux) – Geological carbon storage: instability of coalitions and discourses in relation to a negative carbon technology \nEcological modernization tends to dominate institutional definitions of low-carbon transitions in industrialized countries\, but a lot of studies provide a homogeneous view of ecomodernist projects based on market solutions and technological innovation. This presentation challenges this view of a homogeneity of ecological modernization through a micro-level analysis of the development of an eco-modernist coalition advocating for the development of carbon capture\, utilization and storage (CCUS) in France. Focusing on the construction and erosion of a common framework within the coalition\, we highlight both the ambivalence of the solution’s framing and the instability of the coalition supporting it. Drawing on interpretive policy analysis and the sociology of innovation\, we emphasize that eco-modern innovations are co-constructed between public and private actors. We argue that the ambivalent frameworks developed by the French promoters of CCUS initially legitimized the deployment of the technology but in the long-term led to a misalignment of actors. \nAndreas Folkers (Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen) – Symbiotic (Geo)Engineering \nCows are not only one of the earliest forms of capital\, but they are also terraformers. They helped to colonize the Americas by occupying the land formerly inhabited by Bison herds and are still responsible for the transformation of rich forest ecologies into farmland. According to the FAO ‘livestock production accounts for 70 percent of all agricultural land and 30 percent of the land surface of the planet’. In addition to changing the land\, cows also change the chemical composition of the atmospheres by burping out methane. In last couple of years\, a series of technoscientific and bio-capitalist projects emerged that seek to reduce bovine methane emissions by altering the symbiotic microbial metabolism in the cow’s digestive track. These projects promise that their intervention at the microbial level will have an immediate effect on the planet and thus to constitute a form of microbial or symbiotic geoengineering. However\, this imaginary abstracts from the mediators that make such effects possible. The talk will show the various technoscientific\, calculative\, and economic steps necessary to connect the microbial to the planetary and to turn microbial engineering into geoengineering. \n \n\n\n\n \nSébastien Chailleux (Centre Émile Durkheim-UMR5116\, Sciences Po Bordeaux) is a lecturer at Sciences Po Bordeaux. His work focuses on the dynamics of politicization of energetic transition. For the past ten years\, he has studied how the extractive industries have adapted to the injunctions of the transition. He studied the ban on shale gas in France\, the failure of the mining revival and the development of geological carbon storage. His publications include L’Etat sous pression (2021) co-authored by Philippe Zittoun\, and Ressources Minérales et Transitions (2022) with Sylvain Le Berre and Yann Gunzburger\, as well as many other articles on these topics in Revue Internationale de Politique Comparée\, Revue Française de Sociologie\, Natures Sciences Sociétés\, Critical Policy Studies\, Environment & Planning C or Extractive Industries and Society. \nAndreas Folkers (Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen) is a sociologist with research interests spanning political\, economic\, and environmental sociology\, social theory and science and technology studies. He is a post-doc at the Justus-Liebig University Gießen\, Institute for Sociology where he heads a research project on climate risks in finance. He is currently (Sep 2022 – June 2023) Fellow at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study\, School of Social Science. His work investigates the bio- and technopolitics of contemporary societies from a perspective that combines the analytical sensibilities of STS with approaches in (critical) social theory. He has worked on topics such as disaster preparedness and critical infrastructure protection\, the energy transition\, and symbio-socialities. He is currently PI of a DFG-funded research project on stranded assets and climate risks in finance. The project looks at the “pipelines” between fossil and financial capital and analyses attempts to govern financial risks associated with decarbonization. In addition\, I’m writing a (second) book tentatively titled “Fossil Modernity. A Natural History of the Present” on the rise\, fall\, and afterlives of the cataclysmic ligature between modern societies and fossil fuels. \n \nInformation and registration\n\n\n\nDate: Thursday May 11\, 2023\, 5 pm – 7 pm \nVenue: EHESS\, 54 bd Raspail 75006 Paris\, room BS1_28. \nThe session will also be streamed by videoconference. SUMMARY:The next session of the Seminar on Digital Environmental Policies organized by the Center for the Sociology of Innovation (CSI Mines Paris – PSL) and the Center for Internet and Society (CIS) will be held on
DESCRIPTION:The next session of the Seminar on Digital Environmental Policies \norganized by the Center for the Sociology of Innovation (CSI Mines Paris – PSL) and the Center for Internet and Society (CIS) will be held on \n  \nWednesday\, May 17\, 2023 – 2pm to 4pm \nby visioconference \n  \nFanny Lopez \nLaboratoire Architecture\, Infrastructure Territoire (LIAT)/ \nÉcole d’architecture de la ville & des territoires à Marne-la-Vallée (Éav&t Paris Est) \n  \nIn the vast park of electrical and digital machines \n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\nSummary: This contribution proposes to shed light on the spatial and electrical impacts of digital infrastructure\, and in particular of data centers in Europe and the United States. The electrical-digital continuum is merging into an infrastructure whose inner workingsre are hardly distinguishable\, too large\, too complex. Whilst digital technology goes hand in hand with a massive electrification of uses (all kinds of connected objects and digitization of services)\, the electrical system is increasingly dependent on digital technology to operate (maintenance\, flexibility\, real time control). All of this requires increasingly more infrastructure to interconnect and process the data\, but also more power generation and distribution infrastructure to run it. The analysis of the digital infra-territorial connections’ architectures reveals an electrical infrastructure stretched to the limit. Understanding the digital technology through its electrical matrix involves recomposing a material intelligibility. Shedding light on this spatiality and the issues of its design and deployment places the disciplines of spatial planning in the front line. \n  \n\n\n\n  \nParticipation is upon registration only\, please use this form to register. \nLearn more about the seminar’s objectives and program. \nContact: Clément Marquet \nPhoto source: Fanny Lopez\, Academia \n\n\n\n\n\n\n         \n  \n         \n\n\n\n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:Cerna seminar will welcome Emanuele Tarantino (LUISS)
DESCRIPTION:This is a friendly reminder for our seminar with Emanuele Tarantino (LUISS). The seminar will take place tomorrow at 16:00 in Salle Chevalier. \nEmanuele will talk about his research on: \n  \nCredit Conditions When Lenders are Commonly Owned \n(with Mattia Colombo and Laura Grigolon) \nWe investigate how common ownership between lenders affects the terms of syndicated loans. We provide a novel view on the role of common ownership in mitigating information asymmetries on the quality of borrowers and the resulting contractual distortions in the terms of the loan. Our empirical evidence shows that high common ownership decreases loan rates\, lowers the share of the loan retained by the lead bank\, and mitigates rationing at issuance. Further investigations lend support to the hypothesis that common ownership serves as a device for information transmission: common ownership especially affects the terms of loans for new borrowers\, when the lead arranger is likely to hold an informational advantage. As information flows from the lead arranger to syndicate members\, we show that member-to-lead and member-to-member common ownership does not affect the terms of syndicated loans. \n  \nA link to the paper can be found here. \n

SUMMARY:First edition of the TTI.5 Environmental Controversy Award.
DESCRIPTION:Best case study of an environmental controversy from the course Description of controversies \nThe Transition Institute 1.5 launches its first edition of the TTI.5 Environmental Controversy Award. The prize will be awarded to the best case study of a controversy dealing with an environmental topic\, selected among the papers written by students of the civil engineering program of Mines Paris–PSL. These controversy studies are carried out as part of the course Description of Controversies supervised by Madeleine Akrich\, sociologist and Research Director at the Center for the Sociology of Innovation (CSI). \n\n\n\nThe award will be granted to the best project\, based on the vote of the public\, after the presentation of the 5 nominated projects during the 1st TTI.5 Forum “Security issues related to climate change”. The event is on May 31st\, 2023 at the Maison de l’Océan\, 195 Rue Saint-Jacques\, Paris 75005. The award will be presented by Matthieu Mazière\, Director of the Civil Engineering Education Program at Mines Paris-PSL. \nLimited Seats\, registration to 1st TTI.5 Forum is required here. Discover the full program. \nControversy projects at Mines Paris – PSL\nThe course Description of Controversies is part of the curriculum for third-year students in the Civil Engineering program at Mines Paris-PSL. This course aims to educate engineering students about the evolution of their professional and civic context. The aim is to introduce them to the uncertain world of scientific and technical research by describing an object: a socio-technical controversy. \nThe topics proposed to the students have the following characteristics: an ongoing controversy\, on a targeted subject (for example: not “GMOs” but “the problems raised by the authorization of the cultivation of a transgenic potato plant which is controversial in a specific period and in a specific territory”)\, involving a diversity of protagonists (scientists\, experts\, jurists\, institutions\, members of parliament\, associations\, etc.)\, for which various sources of information are available (general press\, scientific press\, professional press\, discussion forums\, blogs\, websites\, parliamentary reports\, etc.). \nThe controversy study consists in a case study. A group of students follows a controversy in real time to discover its complexity and singularity. A team of sociologists specializing in the analysis of science and technology supervise the students in the development of a pragmatic and argued empirical point of view. \nThe 5 projects nominated for the TTI.5 Environmental Controversy Award\nOf the controversy study projects dealing with environmental issues\, the five projects with the highest rated papers\, reflecting depth of analysis\, are: \n\n« Betteraves\, oiseaux et néonicotinoïdes » [Beets\, birds and neonicotinoids] by Sylvain Caillaud\, Arsène Ferrière\, Grégoire Michel\, Léopold Moeneclaey\, Aymeric Plessier\, Joseph Redaud\, Victoire Rossignol and Maud Roux-Salembien \n« La réforme de l’assurance des récoltes en France. SUMMARY:Teaching about the environmental consequences of digital technology
DESCRIPTION:Registration is required for this event \n \nThis study day is organized in the framework of the Digital Environmental Policies working group of the (GDR Internet\, AI and Society\, by Sylvain Bouveret (lecturer-researcher in computer science at Ensimag in Grenoble)\, Annabelle Collin (lecturer-researcher in mathematics at Enseirb-Matmeca in Bordeaux)\, Clément Marquet (lecturer-researcher in sociology at Mines Paris-PSL)\, Alexandre Monnin (lecturer-researcher at ESC Clermont) and Sophie Quinton (researcher in computer science at INRIA Grenoble). \nHow can we teach about the environmental consequences of digital technology? Rather than a technical reflection on the eco-design of digital services\, this study day proposes to discuss the challenges encountered when addressing with students the more global issues raised by the place of digital technologies in the climate and environmental crises. These issues require teachers to step away from the primary focus of their expertise to delve into other bodies of knowledge\, which are not always easy to identify or to master. Moreover\, the complexity and systemic nature of these problems confronts us with difficulties uncommonly encountered in digital education\, such as uncertainty or even controversy around existing knowledge. Thus\, the teacher’s posture but also the possible reactions of discomfort of students confronted with these issues raise many questions that deserve being discussed. \nThe objective of this event is therefore to share knowledge\, questions and experiences regarding the teaching of the environmental consequences of digital technologies\, whether it is taught by educators in the digital sciences or in the humanities and social sciences. Exchanges will focus as much on content\, interdisciplinary issues and epistemological difficulties as on pedagogical experiences related to the  subject. \n\n\nPhoto source : DocChewbacca (2007). « Salauds ! » (CC BY-SA 2.0)
