SUMMARY:8th ARAMOS Congress
DESCRIPTION:Organizational and managerial innovation in health care Theoretical framework\, impact analysis on professional practices and organization of care\nSpecific Expectations on Management Feedback \nManagerial innovation\, organizational innovation\, there is no shortage of terms to support this new trend in the health sector. Article 51 is an illustration of the mobilization of public authorities in this field.\nFrom the point of view of management research\, this subject offers many opportunities.\nThe first concerns the conceptual definition of managerial or organizational innovation (the distinction between the two representing an issue in itself) in the field of health. Various works (notably those of Kimberly and Hamel) have provided analytical frameworks for situating this type of innovation in relation to technological innovations. It remains to situate this relationship between organisational and technological innovation in the specific context of health\, particularly in the case of digital (telemedicine devices\, connected tools\, etc.) and massive data processing (machine learning algorithms). There is often some confusion in the relationship between technological innovation and organization. In some cases\, it is the forgetting of the organizational context in which the technology is embedded that leads to neglecting its uses (for example\, a telemedicine device is introduced without understanding its uses in a given organizational context). In other cases\, it is the link between the technology and the organisation within an innovative approach that is unclear (for example\, Internet applications or portals for remote patient monitoring need to be thought through with coordinating nurses and modes of organisation in the exchange of information).\nThe second opportunity for analysis aims to clarify the content of these innovations. It is interesting to understand what is put under the terms “management” and “organisation”: new coordination professions\, e-health technologies\, patient engagement\, teamwork\, multi-professional communication along a patient pathway\, the approaches seem quite broad and deserve to specify the contours of organisational innovation in health.\nThe third is to provide evidence of their added value in terms of quality of care\, cost control\, patient experience\, or professional satisfaction. The evaluation modality is itself a research topic\, as the doctrine on the subject is not settled\, particularly in the link between quantitative and qualitative approaches\, or in the consideration of a “realistic” evaluation during development. \nRegistration deadline: September 25\, 2020 \nSeminar video conference \nRegistration 8th ARAMOS Congress \nProgramme 8ème congrès ARAMOS \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The hospital in front of Covid 19\, a contribution of management sciences.
DESCRIPTION:The CGS team’s recommendations on the War Room\nHelping students at two Parisian hospitals in the Ile-de-France region\nFor years\, management researchers at Mines ParisTech have been conducting collaborations with the world of health. In particular\, the CGS has been present and has accompanied the piloting of hospital reforms such as the obligation for hospitals to group together in Territorial Hospital Groups\, the so-called “ambulatory shift” reform and the reform of hospital financing. \nThe hospitals of Montreuil and Avicenne called on CGS students to deal with the shortage of electric syringe pumps\, to find solutions for the follow-up of Covid patients after hospitalization\, teleconsultation and the risks of contamination in the hospital. \nTo learn more about the solutions recommended by the CGS team\, please click on the article de la Revue des Mines n°509 \n  \nThe report: “The French hospital system in the covid-19 crisis\, a contribution from management sciences”. \n\nThe report\nIt is a feedback on the management of the Covid-19 crisis by the actors of the hospital system. This experience feedback comes back on the way the actors understood the crisis on the difficulty linked to the extent of the phenomenon. The report examined the way the hospital system organized itself to manage the crisis and how it coped with it. \nFor details of this document\, please click here. \n  \nThe interviews of Etienne Minvielle and Hervé Dumez\nThe interview of Etienne Minvielle: \n                           \nThe interview of Hervé Dumez: \n \nThe article in the Express Céline Delbecque\, published on 24/07/2020: \n\n“Faced with Covid-19\, the involvement and creativity of the hospitals was impressive”.” \nTwo researchers in management indicate\, in a report published this Friday\, the tracks to try to “better prepare for possible future health crises”. By interviewing 55 actors linked to the crisis\, in “all regions and at all levels of the system”\, the researchers tried to draw a series of lessons\, in order to “better prepare for possible future health crises”. Importance of management\, local initiatives\, cohesion within territories.\n\nDespite an unprecedented health crisis\, the French hospital “did not crack under pressure”: this is the conclusion of a report\, led by two management specialists at the CNRS and published this Friday. In a 90-page document\, Hervé Dumez and Étienne Minvielle\, researchers at the Interdisciplinary Institute of Innovation\, tried to understand how the hospital system managed the crisis for more than three months.  \nL’Express. Why did you decide to work on such a report?   \nHervé Dumez. As management researchers\, the idea came quite naturally to us. We wanted to understand how hospitals were able to manage such a huge crisis\, in terms of its scale and intensity. We took advantage of the de-escalation of the crisis\, at the end of April\, to question a multitude of actors\, whether healthcare staff\, civil servants\, central administrations\, but also more indirect actors\, such as the pharmaceutical industry or dispensing chemists\, who have sometimes become the last link between patients and the medical profession.   \nWhat are the main conclusions to be drawn from this report?   \nHervé Dumez. The most important one remains crisis management. Despite many anxieties and complex situations\, the tone is quite positive: the system has managed to hold up. The perception we have is that there was a real balance between the central action of the State\, which took fundamental decisions for the system – such as containment\, but also the deprogramming of operations at the beginning of the crisis or the transfer of patients between more or less affected areas – and the local initiatives taken in hospitals.   \nOn the other hand\, this crisis would not have been the same without the involvement and creativity of the hospitals themselves\, whose response to the crisis was quite impressive. We are not saying that everything happened in the best of all possible worlds\, of course\, but that in a major crisis like this one\, the hospital system was able to adapt in a quick and relevant way.   \nÉtienne Minvielle. One point that is also very important to remember is the anticipation of threats. More and more\, we will be confronted with new crises\, whether epidemiological or infectious – but each of them will be unprecedented. What we learn from the previous crisis is important in terms of reflexes\, but not in terms of content. For example\, there we ran out of masks; next time it will be something else. So the question is more about how to anticipate crises\, the organizational reflex\, and the forms of management to adopt in order to adapt.   \nHow have local initiatives contributed to this adaptation?   \nHervé Dumez. In this report\, we give considerable importance to the famous creativity shown by hospitals. There has been the ability to create resuscitation beds very quickly\, to call on retired people or students\, to bring in staff from all over the place to equip the resuscitation departments… There are hospitals that have created masks with 3D printers\, entire departments that have had quite remarkable inventiveness\, including from the technical staff.   \nBut are there some negative points to be retained from this crisis?   \nÉtienne Minvielle. There are indeed some black points to highlight\, starting with the masks. It appears that the lack of equipment was extremely distressing for professionals\, and we have received a certain amount of criticism about the way the State managed the orders. What stands out\, in general\, are the difficulties of supply\, both for masks and respirators\, for example.  \nThe disaster was also avoided on some medicines\, which were in tight supply at certain moments of the crisis. Here again\, the creativity of the staff was remarkable: some hospitals\, for example\, brought back retired anesthesiologists to explain to the younger staff how to practice their profession without a certain type of medication\, in order to prepare for a possible shortage.   \nThere are also more critical points in the Ehpad: this is undoubtedly one of the most negative points in the management of this crisis. Some establishments were staffed with night nurses\, others were not… This kind of injustice was very badly experienced by some caregivers. This kind of injustice was very badly experienced by some caregivers. But it appears that the worst was avoided\, with local initiatives by hospital teams who came to help the Ehpad\, for example.   \nWhat lessons can we learn from this report to better prepare for future health crises?   \nÉtienne Minvielle. We have to be very careful\, since the crisis is not yet over\, and each health crisis is different. In any case\, the central question remains the management of hospital performance\, in the broadest sense of the term\, whether we’re talking about finances\, but also beds\, teams\, etc. The main issue is the management of hospital performance\, in the broadest sense of the term. We clearly need to rethink the place of the hospital in its territory: to reflect on the link between the hospital and the Ehpad\, between the hospital and city medicine\, and between the hospital and pharmacies.   \nThere is also a reflection to be made on the explosion of telemedicine\, which for years had been thought to need to be developed\, but which was blocked by all kinds of administrative mechanisms. When doctors are questioned\, a large proportion indicate that they wish to maintain these teleconsultations\, which are clearly part of the patient’s future care pathway.  \nYour report highlights the importance of management within the hospital. Why is it necessary?  \nÉtienne Minvielle. This issue of management is paramount. In the interviews we conducted\, we noted great anxiety about communication difficulties\, people being moved from one department to another without explanation\, this feeling of “being used as a stopgap”. It is necessary to provide support through recognition in the work\, not to forget the professionals “on the periphery”\, to be able to integrate them in very short periods of time\, to avoid taking them for pawns.   \nThis form of proximity management is fundamental\, because the managerial attitude is almost as important as the number of beds or respirators. This is what makes a system work\, and also one of the ways to improve the attractiveness of hospital jobs\, which are cruelly lacking in popularity.   \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Social Sciences on a trey: Sandrine Bubendorff and Caroline Rizza (SES)
DESCRIPTION:This seminar is organized around the social sciences (and digital)\, alternating presentations by social science researchers from Télécom Paris and other institutions on the plateau (on either side of the Nationale 118). \nIt will take place from Télécom Paris (digital school). The premieres will take place on Zoom\, but who knows? One day\, perhaps it will be held in the already celebrated flagship of architecture that hosts Télécom Paris. A room is reserved for those who prefer to come on site. \nFor the first session\, we hope to see many of you welcoming this new space for exchanges\, inaugurated by a presentation of : \nSandrine Bubendorff and Caroline Rizza (SES)\, “Making sense collectively in times of crisis: the use of Wikipedia during the covid-19 pandemic”. \nAbstract: \nFalling within the field of “crisis informatics”\, this article highlights the ways in which citizens collectively elaborate meaning through social media during a particularly uncertain phenomenon\, the Covid-19 pandemic. We conducted a qualitative analysis using ethnographic work carried out on the pages of the encyclopedia in connection with the pandemic and interviews with Wikipedian contributors and a member of the Wikimedia-France Foundation. We thus show how the know-how of the site’s contributors makes it possible to offer readers a clearer understanding of a dramatic event that is currently a vector of uncertainty\, and we highlight the specificities of the health crisis compared to other so-called civil security crises. Specifically\, the construction of meaning related to the pandemic requires an unprecedented reorganization of the ways of doing things\, particularly according to the successive stages of the pandemic and in the face of the phenomenon of disinformation associated with the crisis. \nThe analyses and results thus presented are part of the MESCOV research project “Social media during the covid-19 crisis: information circulation and citizen initiatives”\, subsidized by the Ministry of Higher Education\, Research and Innovation\, Analysis\, Research and Expertise Committee (CARE).  It aims to specialize on certain aspects of the Covid-19 crisis the pre-existing ANR MACIV project on crisis management\, social media and citizen engagement (ANR-17-CE39-0015).  \nPractical information: \n– Zoom Login : \nhttps://telecom-paris.zoom.us/j/94453445512?pwd=UTErSm9pOHdWcUFBbGF2NmFZTjBYQT09 \nMeeting ID: 944 5344 5512 \nSecret code: 502124 \n– Room 3A247\, Télécom Paris\, 19 Place Marguerite Perey\, 91120 Palaiseau : building A\, 3rd floor\, wing 2\, office 47 \nThe next sessions will be held on the 3rd or 4th Monday of the month\, starting at 10am. SUMMARY:The Chair of Business Theory seminar "Business\, Responsibility and Civilization".
DESCRIPTION:The Chair in Business Theory is pleased to invite you to the next session of the seminar “Business\, Responsibility and Civilization”.  \n on October 20\, from 4 to 6 pm\, around \nPeter Doralt et Stephan Leixnering \n« What are companies for ? A ‘rare affaire’ of law with social science »   \nConference organized on the Zoom platform \n \nIn order to connect you on October 20th\, we provide you with the Zoom link below:  \nhttps://zoom.us/j/91830675408?pwd=WVZEalBPc3Z1WTZoM0llK3NwSmlaQT09  \nPeter Doralt is Professor Emeritus of Commercial and Company Law at WU Vienna University of Economics and Business\, and Stephan Leixnering is Senior Scientist at the Research Institute for Urban Management and Governance\, at WU Vienna. The two authors’ presentation stems from the question asked by US corporate giants in a Business Roundtable’s 2019 Statement on the Purpose of the Corporation: What are companies for? Taking an inter-disciplinary perspective\, using both law and social sciences\, they will examine how Austrian corporate law has introduced a legal provision requiring corporate leaders to consider plural interests in their managing of the corporation. Mainly\, they will show how the emerging form of the ‘enterprise’ vis-à-vis the ‘corporation’\, has led to the legal consideration of the stakeholders’ interests\, as well as the enterprise’s own interest.

SUMMARY:Workshops : Evaluation and beyond – Data visualization
DESCRIPTION:Workshop on evaluation and beyond – methodological approaches for Visualization 2020\nWe invite contributions to BELIV 2020\, the international forum to broadly discuss research methods in visualization.\n \nOur discussions span from novel and not-yet fully established evaluation methods for visualization tools and techniques\, to methods that more generally establish the validity and scope of acquired visualisation knowledge. BELIV supports contributions and discussions from the rich spectrum of visualisation researchers\, embracing the varied ways that researchers self-identify with respect to the main conference tracks at VIS. Complementary to the broad scope of BELIV and its general commitment to research methods\, BELIV 2020 will include a timely focus topic: From a Distance: Research practices during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. See the Call for Papers for more details. \n\nAnastasia Bezerianos\, Université Paris-Saclay\nKyle Hall\, Temple University\nSamuel Huron\, Télécom Paris\nMatthew Kay\, University of Michigan\nMiriah Meyer\, University of Utah\nMichael Sedlmair\, University of Stuttgart\n\nWorkshop on Data Visualization Activities to Facilitate Learning\, Reflecting – Monday Oct. 26\, 2020\nThis workshop focuses on data-visualization activities\, especially methods and challenges for teaching and engaging with data visualization concepts\, knowledge\, and practices.\n  \nFor example\, sketching aids designers to consider alternative ideas; manipulating tokens help students conceptualize quantities for data visualization; user interviews and discussions help developers understand requirements. Workshops\, classes\, or collaborations with domain experts\, often include hands-on data visualization activities that involve analog or digital tools and materials and more or less well defined protocols. Recent years have seen the emergence of such data visualization activities in different contexts\, including education\, visualization design\, activism\, self-reflection\, and interdisciplinary collaboration. However\, the broad range of contexts and target audiences that Data-Vis activities have been applied to makes it difficult to collect and identify commonalities and build knowledge in a systematic way. Thus\, the goals of this workshop are i) start building an understanding and to synthesize protocols and materials used to lead data vis activities\, ii) to bring together researchers\, practitioners\, and educators from within and outside of the visualization community\, iii) brainstorm\, design\, experience\, and try novel activities\, and to iv) discuss issues around goals\, methods\, audiences\, materials\, and evaluation for teaching data visualization. \n\nSamuel Huron\, Télécom Paris\nBenjamin Bach\, University of Edinburgh\nUta Hinrichs\, University of St Andrews\nJonathan C.
