SUMMARY:Study day "Reconciling social justice and climate action: can we think the common peril?"
DESCRIPTION:The Chair “Theory of the Enterprise. Governance Model and Collective Creation” of Mines Paris\, is pleased to invite you to the day “Reconciling social justice and climate action: can we think the common peril?”\, organized in collaboration with the Collège des Bernardins on May 19\, 2022. \nWhether at the national or international level\, climate action policies seem to systematically face a dilemma between efficiency and social justice. Is this dilemma unavoidable\, or can we design measures that reconcile climate action and social justice? This study day aims to analyze the foundations of the dilemma between efficiency and equity and to introduce and discuss ways to overcome it. In particular\, the theory of “common peril”\, based on the historical right of joint management of “common perils”\, will be presented and discussed. This day will bring together researchers from different disciplines (economics\, law\, history\, management…) and public decision-makers to discuss these different proposals. \nInvitation et programme – Journée Réconcilier justice sociale et action climatique – peut-on penser le péril commun \nPlease register HERE.

SUMMARY:Seminar with Eli GOTTLIEB\, guest professor at Télécom Paris\, SES Department
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nEach new advance in communications technology opens up new possibilities for how people present – and misrepresent – themselves and the things they believe. In the age of selfies\, deepfake\, and information overload\, it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish fabricated stories and pictures from genuine ones. In this seminar\, I argue that this is affecting not only what we believe but also how we believe. Specifically\, we appear to be shifting from analog to digital not only in our modes of communication but also in our conceptions of what belief is and how it functions. Drawing on examples from many\, different areas of our lives – from politics and religion to our self-perceptions and most intimate relationships\, I show how the idea of belief as a continuous variable measured in degrees of certainty is being replaced by the idea of belief as a binary function of zero or one\, or “all in” versus “all out.” I then consider the practical implications of this shift for the future of public discourse and education. \nMore about Eli Gottlieb \nThe conversation \n Register  for Seminar Télécom-Paris in hybrid \nFace-to-face seminar at Télécom: room 1A242

SUMMARY:Cerna seminar will welcome Emeric Henry from Science Po
DESCRIPTION:We have the pleasure to Emeric Henry from Science Po as the next speaker in our CERNA research seminar. The seminar will take place Wednesday June the 08th 2022 at 4pm in Salle Vendome. The zoom log-in information will be distributed iannounce n due time. \nEmeric will talk about: From Public Labs to Private Firms: Magnitude and Channels of R&D Spillovers” (With Antonin Bergeaud\, Arthur Guillouzouic and Clément Malgouyres) \nIntroducing a new measure of scientific proximity between private firms and public research groups and exploiting a multi-billion euro financing program of academic clusters in France\, we provide causal evidence of spillovers from academic research to private firms. Private sector firms in the top quartile of exposure to the funding shock increase their R&D effort by 20% compared to the bottom quartile. We then use qualitative evidence\, exploiting reports produced by the funded clusters\, as well as quantitative evidence\, using administrative data on labor mobility and R&D public–private partnerships\, to shed light on the channels for these spillovers. We show that spillovers are driven by contracting between the private and public sectors and\, to a lesser extent\, by labor mobility from one to the other and by informal contacts. We discuss policy implications of these findings. \nTo register

SUMMARY:Les petits déjeuners d'i3-CRG with Christophe Midler et Marc Alochet
DESCRIPTION:Presentation of the book « L’Odysée de Spring »   \n \n\nChristophe Midler is Director of Research Emeritus CNRS\, CRG-I3 of the Ecole Polytechnique.\nMarc Alochet is a research associate at CRG-I3 of the Ecole Polytechnique.\nChristophe de Charentenay is the director of M@Air\, a company specialising in low-carbon mobility in Europe and Asia. He previously chaired eGT\, the electric car joint venture between Renault Nissan and Dongfeng.\n\n \nThis book traces the history\, from its genesis to its marketing\, of an inexpensive electric car\, two characteristics that seemed incompatible until now. But beyond a singular adventure\, the development of this project allows us to understand\, better than abstract and general speeches\, key issues of contemporary strategy and management: \n\nA lesson in strategy\, which shows the complexity of an international growth trajectory.\nA lesson in project management\, which analyses the success of a collaboration between five partners in four different countries.\nA lesson in innovation\, which shows that the electrification of mobility can be combined with affordable prices.\nA lesson in industrial policy\, which shows\, contrary to popular belief\, the major role of public authorities in the technological trajectories of companies and therefore the central issues of industrial policies in the competition between Europe and China in particular.\nA lesson in intrapreneurship\, which shows that the start-up is not the only context in which it is possible to try and live adventures\n\nMandatory registration \nIn person at the Drahi Polytechnique and remotely (codes sent a few days before the event). \n

SUMMARY:Minor in Public Affairs and Innovation (PAI): Defense of end of studies projects
DESCRIPTION:The “Public Affairs and Innovation” option trains students to analyze the political dimensions of innovation. It allows students to acquire theoretical and practical skills in areas such as the use of market instruments in public policies (carbon market\, health tariff reform\, etc.)\, public choices in terms of valuing innovation (evaluation of the performance of eco-technologies\, determination of drug prices for rare diseases\, etc.)\, risk management using technical and regulatory tools (traceability of agri-food products\, etc.)\, and the development of new technologies. )\, risk management through technical and regulatory tools (traceability of agro-industrial products\, regulation of the chemical substances market\, etc.)\, and consultation procedures (organization of public debates for infrastructure projects\, relations between companies and their stakeholders\, etc.). \nThese activities are now part of the daily life of engineers holding positions of responsibility in business\, government\, international organizations or the non-profit sector. They aim at managing public affairs\, characterized by uncertainties linked to the development of technologies and markets\, by problems at the interface between the organization and its stakeholders (regulators\, concerned public investors…) and by the increasing articulation between the public and private sectors\, between the national\, European and international levels of government. They require a combination of technical mastery of innovation and a thorough understanding of the political issues at stake\, particularly in terms of regulatory changes\, relations with civil society and the organization of economic exchanges. \nThus\, the training provided by the option responds to a growing demand for engineers capable of putting their technical skills at the service of projects and the interface between industrial development\, regulation and the management of stakeholder expectations. It draws on political science\, law\, sociology\, and social studies of science to provide the tools to identify\, analyze\, and manage the political dimensions of technical projects. The internships allow students to apply these skills in fields characterized by strong technical and social uncertainties. They take place in partnership with various actors (companies\, public administrations\, NGOs or universities).

What impact can this normative densification have on the legal responsibility of companies? Doesn’t the tightening of CSR\, resulting in particular from a strengthening of transparency and vigilance obligations on companies\, contribute to the transformation of the value chain into a chain of responsibility?” \nKathia Martin-Chenut is Director of Research in Law at the CNRS\, Institute of Legal and Philosophical Sciences of the Sorbonne\, where she is co-director of the Center for Comparative Law and Internationalization of Law and the CSR-O AXIS of the ISJPS. \nThis conference will take place at Ecole des Mines but you can also follow it remotely. \nLiliana Doganova and Brice Laurent \nProgram \n13h-14h \nHanane El Hajji \n\nThe state’s role in reducing the risk and insuring the profitability of private investments in renewable energy infrastructure assets in France \n\n14h-15h \nLuc Gendre \n\nLe partenariat public-privé au service de l’aide multilatérale au développement : comment l’instrument façonne-t-il l’action ?

SUMMARY:Cerna Seminar will welcome Michelangelo Rossi (Telecom Paris)
DESCRIPTION:We have the pleasure to announce  Michelangelo Rossi (Telecom Paris) as the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar series. The seminar will take place on Wednesday 21/9/2022 at 16:00 in Salle Chevalier. The log-in information for the live stream on Zoom will also be provided in due course. \nMichelangelo will talk about: \nScapegoating and Discrimination in Times of Crisis: Evidence from Airbnb \n(joint with M. Luca and E. Pronkina) \nWe present evidence that discrimination against Asian-American Airbnb users sharply increased at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a DiD approach\, we find that hosts with distinctively Asian names experienced a 12 percent decline in guests relative to hosts with distinctively White names. In contrast\, we do not see spikes in discrimination against Black or Hispanic hosts. Our results suggest that the rise in anti-Asian sentiment in 2020 translated to discrimination in economic activity\, highlighting the ways in which scapegoating minority groups can shape markets. Our results also point to the role of platform design choices in enabling discrimination.  \nThe paper is available here: https://www.nber.org/papers/w30344 \nMichelangelo will be available for meetings so let me know if you want to have a slot.

SUMMARY:Le soin des choses Politiques de la maintenance par Jérôme Denis et David Pontille
DESCRIPTION:Forthcoming from La Découverte on October 13\, 2022\n\n\nThe authors will present the book \n\non September 28 at 12:00 in the seminar of the STSLab of the University of Lausanne\n\n\non September 29 at 6:30 pm at the autumn conference of the Department of Social Sciences of the University of Geneva\n\n\non October 13 at 7pm\, book launch at the bookshop l’Atelier\, 2 bis rue du Jourdain 75020 Paris\n\n \n\n\n\nWhat do a furnace\, a car\, a signpost\, a smartphone\, a cathedral\, a work of art\, a satellite\, a washing machine\, a bridge\, a clock\, a computer server\, the body of an illustrious statesman\, or a tractor have in common? Almost nothing\, except that none of these things\, small or large\, precious or banal\, lasts without some form of maintenance. Every object wears out\, degrades\, eventually breaks\, or even disappears. However\, do we really grasp the importance of maintenance? As a counterpoint to the contemporary obsession with innovation\, and less spectacular than the singular act of repair\, this delicate art of making things last is only very rarely brought to our attention. \nThis book is an invitation to shift the focus to maintenance and those who perform it. By following the thread of different stories\, its authors describe the subtleties of “caring for things” in order to underline its ethical stakes and its political significance. Because of the sensitive attention to fragility that is cultivated and because a material diplomacy that resists the frantic rhythm of programmed obsolescence and overconsumption is invented on a daily basis\, maintenance outlines the contours of a world away from the pretensions of human omnipotence and technological autonomy. A world where forms of attachment to things are much less trivial than one might imagine. \n \nJérôme Denis et David Pontille. Le soin des choses. Politiques de la maintenance. SUMMARY:Presentation of the i3 book "Innovating in times of crisis
DESCRIPTION:Meeting with the coordinators of the book: \n\nHervé Dumez\, CNRS\, Ecole polytechnique ;\nBenjamin Loveluck\, Télécom-Paris ;\nand Alexandre Mallard\, Mines Paris PSL. \n\nwho will exchange with : \n\nGéraldine Schhmidt\, IAE Paris-Sorbonne ;\nand Marc Barbier INRAE.\n\nPresentation of the book:\n \nCertainly\, crises give us food for thought – but not only on the means to be implemented to avoid them or to get out of them. They challenge us in our ability to find solutions in the face of unprecedented difficulties\, to rethink problems that we thought were already solved\, or to accelerate changes that we had only just begun to see. In a word\, they lead to innovation. The Covid epidemic that began at the end of 2019 is an emblematic case in point. While it has destabilized the social\, political and economic functioning of societies on a planetary scale in record time\, it has also provided an opportunity for innovation in a whole range of situations. This book examines the way in which the reaction\, adaptation and transformation to the virus were played out in various fields: expertise and political decision-making\, mobility practices\, small business\, telecommuting\, the organization of health institutions\, culture\, communication on social media… Written by researchers in management\, economics\, sociology\, information and communication sciences gathered in the Interdisciplinary Institute of Innovation (i3)\, this book testifies to the vigor of the individual and collective logics that manifested themselves in the health crisis\, and to the very variety of forms in which the phenomena of innovation present themselves. \n  \nRéservation en présentiel et lien de visio-conférence par mail : resa.bib@mines-paristech.fr \nBibliothèque Mines Paris \n60 boulevard Saint Michel \n75006 PARIS \n

SUMMARY:CERNA Seminar will welcome Ulrich Laitenberger (Telecom Paris)
DESCRIPTION:We have the pleasure to announce Ulrich Laitenberger (Telecom Paris) as the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. The seminar will take place on Wednesday 26/10/2022 at 16:00 in Salle Vendome. \nBye-box: An Analysis of Non-Promotion on the Amazon Marketplace \nWe study seller and product recommendations of the hybrid e-commerce platform Amazon. Using web-scraped data\, we find that Amazon makes the visibility of offers of third-party suppliers in the “buybox” dependent on prices on competing marketplaces like Walmart and eBay. Amazon’s own offers are visible regardless of their competitiveness. We find that the absence of seller recommendations makes recommendations to related products more effective and Amazon tends to steer consumers in these situations more often to products it sells itself. We discuss that this behavior is difficult to reconcile with the hypothesis of an independent marketplace operator

SUMMARY:First session of the NOS team research seminar will welcome : Arthur Forges\, PhD student at Télécom Paris
DESCRIPTION:The first research seminar of the NOS team will be held this Thursday\, November 24\, between 12:00 and 14:00 in room 3A306. We welcome : \nArthur Forges\, PhD student at Télécom Paris \nwill speak on the topic :\n“Telling the story on YouTube. From the effervescence of history to narrative videography”. \n\nYou will find a summary of his talk below. \nPlease let us know if you will be attending. \nArthur Forges – Telling the story on YouTube. From the effervescence of history to narrative videography.\nWhether it is the object of fiction\, instrumentalized by politicians\, or reappropriated by video artists on YouTube\, it is clear that history in public spaces is not often the work of historians\, who are relatively absent. However\, history is today as visible and protean as it is multilingual. This is not surprising\, since history has never been the monopoly of historians and\, from the beginning\, it has been disseminated in many “forms” – a term that we will try to define. These forms surprise – and surprise – not only from the point of view of methodology and the polysemy that accompanies the term “history”\, but also by their circulation\, their potential\, their success and their performance. This is why in this seminar we propose to describe and interrogate the ways in which YouTubers running a history channel organize and reappropriate the historical sciences. \n  \nRegistration :

SUMMARY:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” will welcome Benoît Dauguet and Fanny Guillet
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” will welcome \n  \nBenoît Dauguet and Fanny Guillet \n  \nEnvironmental compensation \n  \nThis session will question the tools and practices of valuation of nature that inform environmental compensation operations – that is\, the supposed neutralization of environmental damage through the restoration or repair of natural spaces. What are the operations of categorization\, commensuration\, and planning that are used to produce ecological neutrality\, and with what consequences? \nBenoît Dauguet: Measures against Nature \nEcological compensation is presented as the solution to reconcile economic development and nature protection. Its logic is simple: if a development project degrades the environment\, all that needs to be done is to put in place a certain number of environmental measures that would compensate for this damage.  Far from being politically neutral\, this system is in fact based on a deadly logic that makes developers the main actors in nature protection. \nFanny Guillet: Ecological Neutrality Policies: Production of metrics and service markets \nPolicies for ecological neutrality are gathering momentum among the instruments of environmental public action. Behind ambitious formulas such as Zero Net Pollution\, Zero Net Artificialization or Zero Net Loss of Biodiversity\, a system of categorization and commensurability of nature is put in place. This process is as much reductive as it is necessary for policies to be enforceable. Using the case of environmental assessment\, which endorses “Zero Net Loss of Biodiversity”\, we will analyze the negotiations underlying the co-design of categories\, torn by the dual challenge of ecological relevance and operationality for professional actors. \n  \n\n\n\nBenoît Dauguet is the author of a book “Mesures contre nature. Mythes et rouages de la compensation écologique” published by Grevis in 2021. In 2020\, he completed a thesis entitled “La compensation écologique: conception\, inscription et institution de l’équivalence écologique” [Ecological compensation: conception\, inscription and institution of ecological equivalence] at the Centre Alexandre Koyré (EHESS). \nFanny Guillet is a researcher at the Centre d’Écologie et des Sciences de la Conservation (CESCO)\, UMR 7204 (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle\, CNRS\, Sorbonne University). SUMMARY:Digital Commons and Ecological Transition
DESCRIPTION:This study day is organized by the working groups of the GDR Internet\, AI & Society\, Politiques environnementales du numérique [Digital Environmental Policy]\, coordinated by Clément Marquet (CSI\, Mines Paris – PSL\, i3) and Sophie Quinton (Inria\, GDS EcoInfo)\, and Politiques des communs numériques [Digital Commons Policy]\, coordinated by Cristiana Sappa (IÉSEG School of Management) and Sébastien Shulz (LISIS\, Université Gustave Eiffel) \n\n\n\n\nFriday\, November 25\, 2022 from 9am to 5pm. \nCentre Internet et Société\, 59-61 Rue Pouchet\, Paris 17e. \n Please note that registration is required \nThe event will be held in French\, but it will be possible to address questions in English. \nObjective\nThe objective of this study day is twofold. On the one hand\, to question the links between the digital commons and the ecological transition through dialogue between interdisciplinary researchers and practitioners directly involved in this connection. On the other hand\, to explore the first avenues towards a common set of research issues and to design a research program. To that end\, the study day will be organized in two sessions. The morning session will be dedicated to three presentations that will frame the day and open up avenues for reflection. The afternoon session is organized around three participative workshops. \nArgument\nContext. The digital commons movement is rooted at the crossroads between the American academic and Internet worlds. This movement advocates open access\, peer-to-peer production and shared governance of digital resources in the networked information space. Free software\, Wikipedia or the Open Street Map are paradigmatic examples of these arrangements\, called “digital commons” by theorists of the movement. In the 2000s\, their claims were translated outside the academic and activist spheres of the Internet\, for example within the worlds of cultural production or politics. But for the past few years\, a new phenomenon has been emerging that has not yet been fully explored by research: mobilizations seeking to link the digital commons to the challenges of the ecological transition (Labaeye\, 2020). We have identified three forms of articulation between digital commons and ecological transition. First\, a number of digital commons projects integrate ecological concerns. For example\, free software communities try to reduce the ecological footprint of their production through “eco-design” practices\, and are sometimes critical of the strong growth of the digital sector with regard to its environmental and climatic consequences (Maurel\, 2020). Secondly\, we see the creation of “cooperative platforms” that are being specifically set up to respond to ecological issues. This is the case of Mobicoop\, an open source software developed by a SCIC [Société Coopérative d’Intérêt Collectif\, or cooperative community-oriented enterprise]\, whose objective is to develop shared mobility by offering an open platform (Vercher-Chaptal et al.\, 2021). Third\, digital commons are being used in distributed manufacturing projects. Original partnerships are being built between academics\, engineers\, and practitioners in the field of agriculture to co-produce open source blueprints for more environmentally friendly farm machinery (Benkler\, 2006; Giotitsas\, 2019). More generally\, there are many other examples we could cite of distributed manufacturing\, allowing for reduced transportation logistics costs\, in the various branches of the “maker”\, “fablab”\, or more generally “third place” movements (Scaillerez et al.\, 2017; Lallement\, 2018; Kostakis et al.\, 2018). \n  \nIssues. However\, these three convergences between the digital commons and ecological transitions are not self-evident. To begin with\, ecological and digital transitions have rarely been thought of together. On the contrary\, classical representations of the Internet tend to make a distinction between the physical and virtual worlds. A naive perspective presented “cyberspace” as the sphere of the mind where the attributes of the body had no hold. From a more sociological point of view\, the worlds of activist Internet and political ecology have been quite hermetic\, with a few rare but notable exceptions (Gorz\, 2003). Not to mention that an increasing number of voices are being raised to criticize the environmental impact of digital technology and its physical infrastructure (Flipo\, 2021; Allard et al.\, 2022). This raises the question of how different social worlds (developing and promoting digital technologies and/or working on the ecological transition) dialogue with each other. What are the common grammars and the stumbling blocks? From a more empirical point of view\, what tensions arise from these attempts to hybridize issues and representations? How are communities of practice structured? What are the emerging new institutional\, economic or partnership forms? \n\n\nProgram\n9:00 am – Welcome breakfast \n9:20 am – Morning plenary session \n\nIntroductory address followed by three presentations\nCorinne Vercher-Chaptal\, university professor in management and specialist in cooperative platforms\nAgnès Crépet\, computer scientist and software sustanability fairphone manager\nVasilis Kostakis\, researcher in political economy at Tallin University of Technology (TalTech)\, associate researcher at the Berkman Klein Center of Harvard\, director of the ERC research project Cosmolocalism\n\n12:45 am – Lunch (not paid for) in a booked restaurant \n2:30 pm – Afternoon workshops \n\nCooperative platforms supporting the transition\nEcological issues addressed by digital commons collectives\nOpen-source distributed manufacturing\n\n4:30 pm – Conclusions and closing remarks in plenary session \n5:00 pm – Closing drink \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBibliography\nBenkler Y.\, 2006\, The Wealth of Networks. DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar will welcome \nAnnemarie Mol \nFaculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences\, University of Amsterdam \nProgramme group: Anthropology of Health\, Care and the Body \n  \nTo discuss her book \n  \nEating in Theory \n  \n\n\n\nIntroduction to the discussion by Jean Goizauskas \nBack cover: As we taste\, chew\, swallow\, digest\, and excrete\, our foods transform us\, while our eating\, in its turn\, affects the wider earthly environment. In Eating in Theory Annemarie Mol takes inspiration from these transformative entanglements to rethink what it is to be human. Drawing on fieldwork at food conferences\, research labs\, health care facilities\, restaurants\, and her own kitchen table\, Mol reassesses the work of authors such as Hannah Arendt\, Maurice Merleau-Ponty\, Hans Jonas\, and Emmanuel Levinas. They celebrated the allegedly unique capability of humans to rise above their immediate bodily needs. Mol\, by contrast\, appreciates that as humans we share our fleshy substance with other living beings\, whom we cultivate\, cut into pieces\, transport\, prepare\, and incorporate—and to whom we leave our excesses. This has far-reaching philosophical consequences. Taking human eating seriously suggests a reappraisal of being as transformative\, knowing as entangling\, doing as dispersed\, and relating as a matter of inescapable dependence. \nAnnemarie Mol\, Eating in Theory\, Duke University Press\, 2021. \n  \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. DESCRIPTION:The effects of banning loss-leader pricing in grocery retailing markets \n(joint with Jorge Florez\, Banco de la Republica) \nHalf of the states of the U.S. ban loss-leader pricing because it is considered predatory. Recent theoretical evidence challenges this view\, suggesting that loss-leading may arise as a result of a discrimination of consumers with different shopping costs. We examine the effects of banning loss-leader pricing in grocery retailing markets on supermarket pricing. To this end\, we use scanner data on supermarket sales in the United States and carry out two empirical exercises. First\, we exploit an exogenous shock in the below-cost selling law in Wisconsin between 2009 and 2010 to identify the causal effect on prices on milk. Our results suggest that prices increase as a result of the ban of below-cost selling. Second\, we estimate a structural model of demand and supply of multiple products allowing for complementarities across products. The main challenge that is common in the estimation of demand models in this type of setting is a high-dimensional choice set. We propose a novel solution to this challenge and provide evidence of its effectiveness based on Monte Carlo simulations. Using our demand estimation approach\, we find negative margins consistent with competitive cross-subsidization across products within a retailer chain. Our counterfactual results suggest that banning below-cost pricing rises equilibrium prices.  \n

SUMMARY:The seminar “Digital environmental policies” will welcome Djilali Taïar (CDEP\, Université d’Artois)
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Digital environmental policies” will welcome \n  \nDjilali Taïar (CDEP\, Université d’Artois) \n  \nLa régulation environnementale du numérique en France \nEnvironmental regulation of digital technology in France \n \n  \nSummary: As of the end of 2021\, two laws have given regulatory authorities (Arcep and Arcom) the mandate of supporting digital actors in adopting more environmentally friendly practices. Despite the introduction of a binding environmental data collection regime\, reducing the sector’s footprint still depends on the goodwill of private actors. Nevertheless\, the regulatory authorities’ role should be strengthened to regulate their practices. This presentation aims to establish the current status of the new legal regime applicable to digital professionals\, while looking at whether the means implemented are up to the expressly sought-after objective: reducing the environmental footprint of digital technology. \n  \n\n\n\nDate: December 15\, 2022\, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm \nThe seminar will be held by videoconference. SUMMARY:Cerna Lunch Seminar will welcome Felix Poege (Postdoctoral Associate at the Technology & Policy Research Initiative at Boston University)
DESCRIPTION:The  16th December at 12h00 in Salle Vendome\, we will have a lunch seminar out of the usual schedule by Felix Poege (Postdoctoral Associate at the Technology & Policy Research Initiative at Boston University). You can find his profile here: https://www.felixpoege.eu/ \nFelix will present his job market paper about “Competition and Innovation: The Breakup of IG Farben” \nAbstract The relationship between competition and innovation is difficult to disentangle\, as exogenous variation in market structure is rare. The 1952 breakup of Germany’s leading chemical company\, IG Farben\, represents such a disruption. After the Second World War\, the Allies occupying Germany imposed the breakup because of IG Farben’s importance for the German war economy instead of standard antitrust concerns. In technology areas where the breakup reduced concentration\, patenting increased strongly\, driven by domestic firms unrelated to IG Farben. An analysis of patent texts shows that an increased propensity to patent does not drive the effect. Descriptively\, IG Farben’s successors increased their patenting activities as well\, and their patenting specialized relative to the pre-breakup period. The results are consistent with a breakup-induced innovation increase by the IG Farben successors\, which then spilled over to the wider chemical industry. \nLink to full paper: https://www.felixpoege.eu/workingpaper/#competition-and-innovation-breaking-ig-farben \nBlog summary: on https://www.promarket.org/2022/10/05/new-research-shows-the-breakup-of-ig-farben-increased-innovation/ \nAks the link \n  \n

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar will welcome Geneviève Pruvost Cems-EHESS
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar will welcome \nGeneviève Pruvost \nCems-EHESS \n  \nto discuss her book \n  \nQuotidien politique \n\nFéminisme\, écologie\, subsistance \n  \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Solène Sarnowksi \nQuatrième de couverture : Fin des sociétés paysannes\, cuisines équipées\, bétonisation des terres arables\, effacement des savoir-faire et cosmogonies autochtones\, ignorance des rythmes du monde vivant… \nDaily Politics. Feminism\, ecology\, subsistence \nBack cover (our translation): The end of peasant societies\, equipped kitchens\, the pouring of concrete across arable land\, the erasure of indigenous know-how and cosmogonies\, the ignorance of the rhythms of the living world… These various phenomena that we are learning to deplore today are definitely linked\, as ecofeminist theorists\, critics of industrial modernity\, have been telling us for half a century. This book is devoted to their thoughts\, which are little known in France\, as well as to the existential and political lessons to be drawn from them. The author explores contemporary ecological and anti-capitalist alternatives with the view to demonstrating that daily life is a founding political terrain. \nWithout the politics of everyday life\, without the collective and radical reconstruction of our subsistence\, there will be no egalitarian or ecological society. Contrary to accepted ideas\, it is not the generalization of wage-earning that has given us access to consumer society and comfort\, but colonialism and female domestic work. Another political organization of life and relations to nature is possible. On the condition that it is redistributed\, anchored in a community in contact with a biotope and its uses\, subsistence work thus rethought becomes a factor of emancipation. The fabrication of daily life then appears for what it is: a revolutionary issue. \nGeneviève Pruvost\, Quotidien Politique.
