SUMMARY:Risk prevention and impact on health insurance coverage
DESCRIPTION:Seminar series:\nLa prévention en santé \nsera-t-elle algorithmique ?\nWill preventive healthcare\nbe algorithmic? \n  \nOn the initiative of the Centre de Recherche en Gestion\nof the École Polytechnique\n  \nAcadémie Nationale de Médecine\n16 RUE BONAPARTE 75006 Paris\n8:30 am-10:00 am\nKnowledge of the risk of disease occurrence through predictive algorithmic methods calls into question a founding principle of insurance coverage. If this risk is known\, pooling it within an insurance system loses its meaning\, and a move towards individualized contracts is a plausible option. \nAt the same time\, massive data processing makes it possible to monitor recommended behaviors using connected tools. With a connected watch\, for example\, it’s possible to know whether a given policyholder is following recommendations on physical exercise or other matters. Contracts can be modulated according to compliance behavior. Prevention\, both in terms of risk prediction and compliance with the measures implemented\, therefore seems an additional dimension for insurers to integrate. But the adoption of such an approach depends on cultural contexts. \nIs it possible to envisage individual forms of insurance based on greater control of policyholder behavior in contexts such as France? If this seems more plausible in liberal contexts\, isn’t there a French-style model to be created to take account of these new forms of prevention in the insurance world? If so\, what are its foundations? \nhosted by Etienne Minvielle \n  \nTo register\, click here \n

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar will welcome Thom Van Dooren University of Sydney | University of Oslo to discuss his book
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar will welcome \nThom Van Dooren \nUniversity of Sydney | University of Oslo \nto discuss his book \nThe Wake of Crows \nLiving and Dying in Shared Worlds \n  \n \n  \nIntroduction to the discussion : Roman Solé-Pomies \nBack cover: Crows can be found almost everywhere that people are\, from tropical islands to deserts and arctic forests\, from densely populated cities to suburbs and farms. Across these diverse landscapes\, many species of crow are doing well: their intelligent and adaptive ways of life have allowed them to thrive amid human-driven transformations. Indeed\, crows are frequently disliked for their success\, seen as pests\, threats\, and scavengers on the detritus of human life. But among the vast variety of crows\, there are also critically endangered species that are barely hanging on to existence\, some of them the subjects of passionate conservation efforts. \nThe Wake of Crows is an exploration of the entangled lives of humans and crows. Focusing on five key sites\, Thom van Dooren asks how we might live well with crows in a changing world. He explores contemporary possibilities for shared life emerging in the context of ongoing processes of globalization\, colonization\, urbanization\, and climate change. Moving among these diverse contexts\, this book tells stories of extermination and extinction alongside fragile efforts to better understand and make room for other species. Grounded in the careful work of paying attention to particular crows and their people\, The Wake of Crows is an effort to imagine and put into practice a multispecies ethics. In so doing\, van Dooren explores some of the possibilities that still exist for living and dying well on this damaged planet. \nThom Van Dooren\, The Wake of Crows. Living and Dying in Shared Worlds\, Columbia University Press\, 2019. \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. SUMMARY:”Doing ‘with’ to repair the world? The challenges of repair cultures”
DESCRIPTION:To attend by videoconference\, please register here to access the link \nDownload the programme \nFaire ‘avec’ pour réparer le monde ? Les enjeux des cultures de la réparation\nDoing ‘with’ to repair the world? The challenges of repair cultures\nCoordinators of this study day of the “Living in Transition” workshop:\nLaurence Allard[1]\, Clément Marquet[2] and Jérôme Boissonade[3] \nFaced with the challenges of the new climate regime\, the massive destruction of biodiversity and the economic\, cultural and social damage caused by neo-liberal globalization\, the critique of the consumerist model\, co-constitutive of the rise of industrial society\, calls for a profound transformation of the modes of production and use of objects\, and especially the practices of discarding. Consideration of our daily consumer objects’ life cycle on a planetary scale involves redefining the modalities of use and the development of infrastructures to ensure the maintenance and the repair of all things. The imperative of sobriety\, omnipresent in the situation of energy crisis\, intends to capture this call for the slowdown of consumption and the alleviation of the pressures on fossil and mineral resource extraction and the reduction of the accumulation of tons of waste. In this context\, a growing number of actors emphasize the pressing need for a reversal of values: sustainability versus disposability\, reuse versus abandonment\, repair versus destruction\, robustness versus obsolescence\, maintenance versus innovation\, redirection versus transition. \nFor this session of the “Living in Transition” workshop\, we propose to study the multiple facets of this impulse towards sustainability\, and to carefully analyze the tensions that this inversion of value may provoke. Making things last or repairing them are not “hypergoods” in themselves. After a period marked by “sustainable development”\, how can we question both the possibilities and the limits of maintenance and repair brought about by ecological transition policies? While receiving new attention\, with the emergence of socially valued sites\, the practices of repair\, waste sorting and reuse are also old practices: what can we learn from what is often played out at the margins\, and how can we avoid the sudden spotlight on third places\, makerspaces and other repair cafés from producing an exclusion of the most marginal social actors? How can we give a legitimate place to situated knowledge and infra-ordinary gestures alongside technical expertise? Moreover\, the problem of obsolescence cannot be considered only from the consumers’ point of view\, it is actively dependent on designers: how does the urgency of sustainability redefine design and production practices? To what extent does appropriation through transformation allow for a re-examination of the relationship to things and for overcoming the opposition between market value and use value? Finally\, to what extent can the relationship to others and to time characteristic of most “cultures of repair” take a part in ways of doing and living that have environmental and social justice as their horizon? \nTo address these questions\, we will welcome researchers in the sociology of science and technology\, in anthropology and in design sciences. \nProgramme \nMatinée (9h30-12h) “Maintenir et concevoir” \nIntroduction de Clément Marquet \n\nJérôme Denis[4] & David Pontille[5] : « Qui prend soin des choses ? SUMMARY:Teaching about the environmental consequences of digital technology
DESCRIPTION:Registration is required for this event \n \nThis study day is organized in the framework of the Digital Environmental Policies working group of the (GDR Internet\, AI and Society\, by Sylvain Bouveret (lecturer-researcher in computer science at Ensimag in Grenoble)\, Annabelle Collin (lecturer-researcher in mathematics at Enseirb-Matmeca in Bordeaux)\, Clément Marquet (lecturer-researcher in sociology at Mines Paris-PSL)\, Alexandre Monnin (lecturer-researcher at ESC Clermont) and Sophie Quinton (researcher in computer science at INRIA Grenoble). \nHow can we teach about the environmental consequences of digital technology? Rather than a technical reflection on the eco-design of digital services\, this study day proposes to discuss the challenges encountered when addressing with students the more global issues raised by the place of digital technologies in the climate and environmental crises. These issues require teachers to step away from the primary focus of their expertise to delve into other bodies of knowledge\, which are not always easy to identify or to master. Moreover\, the complexity and systemic nature of these problems confronts us with difficulties uncommonly encountered in digital education\, such as uncertainty or even controversy around existing knowledge. Thus\, the teacher’s posture but also the possible reactions of discomfort of students confronted with these issues raise many questions that deserve being discussed. \nThe objective of this event is therefore to share knowledge\, questions and experiences regarding the teaching of the environmental consequences of digital technologies\, whether it is taught by educators in the digital sciences or in the humanities and social sciences. Exchanges will focus as much on content\, interdisciplinary issues and epistemological difficulties as on pedagogical experiences related to the  subject. \n\n\nPhoto source : DocChewbacca (2007). « Salauds ! » (CC BY-SA 2.0)

SUMMARY:First edition of the TTI.5 Environmental Controversy Award.
DESCRIPTION:Best case study of an environmental controversy from the course Description of controversies \nThe Transition Institute 1.5 launches its first edition of the TTI.5 Environmental Controversy Award. The prize will be awarded to the best case study of a controversy dealing with an environmental topic\, selected among the papers written by students of the civil engineering program of Mines Paris–PSL. These controversy studies are carried out as part of the course Description of Controversies supervised by Madeleine Akrich\, sociologist and Research Director at the Center for the Sociology of Innovation (CSI). \n\n\n\nThe award will be granted to the best project\, based on the vote of the public\, after the presentation of the 5 nominated projects during the 1st TTI.5 Forum “Security issues related to climate change”. The event is on May 31st\, 2023 at the Maison de l’Océan\, 195 Rue Saint-Jacques\, Paris 75005. The award will be presented by Matthieu Mazière\, Director of the Civil Engineering Education Program at Mines Paris-PSL. \nLimited Seats\, registration to 1st TTI.5 Forum is required here. Discover the full program. \nControversy projects at Mines Paris – PSL\nThe course Description of Controversies is part of the curriculum for third-year students in the Civil Engineering program at Mines Paris-PSL. This course aims to educate engineering students about the evolution of their professional and civic context. The aim is to introduce them to the uncertain world of scientific and technical research by describing an object: a socio-technical controversy. \nThe topics proposed to the students have the following characteristics: an ongoing controversy\, on a targeted subject (for example: not “GMOs” but “the problems raised by the authorization of the cultivation of a transgenic potato plant which is controversial in a specific period and in a specific territory”)\, involving a diversity of protagonists (scientists\, experts\, jurists\, institutions\, members of parliament\, associations\, etc.)\, for which various sources of information are available (general press\, scientific press\, professional press\, discussion forums\, blogs\, websites\, parliamentary reports\, etc.). \nThe controversy study consists in a case study. A group of students follows a controversy in real time to discover its complexity and singularity. A team of sociologists specializing in the analysis of science and technology supervise the students in the development of a pragmatic and argued empirical point of view. \nThe 5 projects nominated for the TTI.5 Environmental Controversy Award\nOf the controversy study projects dealing with environmental issues\, the five projects with the highest rated papers\, reflecting depth of analysis\, are: \n\n« Betteraves\, oiseaux et néonicotinoïdes » [Beets\, birds and neonicotinoids] by Sylvain Caillaud\, Arsène Ferrière\, Grégoire Michel\, Léopold Moeneclaey\, Aymeric Plessier\, Joseph Redaud\, Victoire Rossignol and Maud Roux-Salembien \n« La réforme de l’assurance des récoltes en France. SUMMARY:Cerna seminar will welcome Emanuele Tarantino (LUISS)
DESCRIPTION:This is a friendly reminder for our seminar with Emanuele Tarantino (LUISS). The seminar will take place tomorrow at 16:00 in Salle Chevalier. \nEmanuele will talk about his research on: \n  \nCredit Conditions When Lenders are Commonly Owned \n(with Mattia Colombo and Laura Grigolon) \nWe investigate how common ownership between lenders affects the terms of syndicated loans. We provide a novel view on the role of common ownership in mitigating information asymmetries on the quality of borrowers and the resulting contractual distortions in the terms of the loan. Our empirical evidence shows that high common ownership decreases loan rates\, lowers the share of the loan retained by the lead bank\, and mitigates rationing at issuance. Further investigations lend support to the hypothesis that common ownership serves as a device for information transmission: common ownership especially affects the terms of loans for new borrowers\, when the lead arranger is likely to hold an informational advantage. As information flows from the lead arranger to syndicate members\, we show that member-to-lead and member-to-member common ownership does not affect the terms of syndicated loans. \n  \nA link to the paper can be found here. \n

SUMMARY:The next session of the Seminar on Digital Environmental Policies organized by the Center for the Sociology of Innovation (CSI Mines Paris – PSL) and the Center for Internet and Society (CIS) will be held on
DESCRIPTION:The next session of the Seminar on Digital Environmental Policies \norganized by the Center for the Sociology of Innovation (CSI Mines Paris – PSL) and the Center for Internet and Society (CIS) will be held on \n  \nWednesday\, May 17\, 2023 – 2pm to 4pm \nby visioconference \n  \nFanny Lopez \nLaboratoire Architecture\, Infrastructure Territoire (LIAT)/ \nÉcole d’architecture de la ville & des territoires à Marne-la-Vallée (Éav&t Paris Est) \n  \nIn the vast park of electrical and digital machines \n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\nSummary: This contribution proposes to shed light on the spatial and electrical impacts of digital infrastructure\, and in particular of data centers in Europe and the United States. The electrical-digital continuum is merging into an infrastructure whose inner workingsre are hardly distinguishable\, too large\, too complex. Whilst digital technology goes hand in hand with a massive electrification of uses (all kinds of connected objects and digitization of services)\, the electrical system is increasingly dependent on digital technology to operate (maintenance\, flexibility\, real time control). All of this requires increasingly more infrastructure to interconnect and process the data\, but also more power generation and distribution infrastructure to run it. The analysis of the digital infra-territorial connections’ architectures reveals an electrical infrastructure stretched to the limit. Understanding the digital technology through its electrical matrix involves recomposing a material intelligibility. Shedding light on this spatiality and the issues of its design and deployment places the disciplines of spatial planning in the front line. \n  \n\n\n\n  \nParticipation is upon registration only\, please use this form to register. \nLearn more about the seminar’s objectives and program. \nContact: Clément Marquet \nPhoto source: Fanny Lopez\, Academia \n\n\n\n\n\n\n         \n  \n         \n\n\n\n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” will welcome Sébastien Chailleux and Andreas Folkers
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” will welcome \n \nSébastien Chailleux and Andreas Folkers \n \nGeoengineering \n \nThis session will explore the promises of geoengineering through analyzes of eco-modernist projects promoting innovations designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. \nSébastien Chailleux (Centre Émile Durkheim-UMR5116\, Sciences Po Bordeaux) – Geological carbon storage: instability of coalitions and discourses in relation to a negative carbon technology \nEcological modernization tends to dominate institutional definitions of low-carbon transitions in industrialized countries\, but a lot of studies provide a homogeneous view of ecomodernist projects based on market solutions and technological innovation. This presentation challenges this view of a homogeneity of ecological modernization through a micro-level analysis of the development of an eco-modernist coalition advocating for the development of carbon capture\, utilization and storage (CCUS) in France. Focusing on the construction and erosion of a common framework within the coalition\, we highlight both the ambivalence of the solution’s framing and the instability of the coalition supporting it. Drawing on interpretive policy analysis and the sociology of innovation\, we emphasize that eco-modern innovations are co-constructed between public and private actors. We argue that the ambivalent frameworks developed by the French promoters of CCUS initially legitimized the deployment of the technology but in the long-term led to a misalignment of actors. \nAndreas Folkers (Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen) – Symbiotic (Geo)Engineering \nCows are not only one of the earliest forms of capital\, but they are also terraformers. They helped to colonize the Americas by occupying the land formerly inhabited by Bison herds and are still responsible for the transformation of rich forest ecologies into farmland. According to the FAO ‘livestock production accounts for 70 percent of all agricultural land and 30 percent of the land surface of the planet’. In addition to changing the land\, cows also change the chemical composition of the atmospheres by burping out methane. In last couple of years\, a series of technoscientific and bio-capitalist projects emerged that seek to reduce bovine methane emissions by altering the symbiotic microbial metabolism in the cow’s digestive track. These projects promise that their intervention at the microbial level will have an immediate effect on the planet and thus to constitute a form of microbial or symbiotic geoengineering. However\, this imaginary abstracts from the mediators that make such effects possible. The talk will show the various technoscientific\, calculative\, and economic steps necessary to connect the microbial to the planetary and to turn microbial engineering into geoengineering. \n \n\n\n\n \nSébastien Chailleux (Centre Émile Durkheim-UMR5116\, Sciences Po Bordeaux) is a lecturer at Sciences Po Bordeaux. His work focuses on the dynamics of politicization of energetic transition. For the past ten years\, he has studied how the extractive industries have adapted to the injunctions of the transition. He studied the ban on shale gas in France\, the failure of the mining revival and the development of geological carbon storage. His publications include L’Etat sous pression (2021) co-authored by Philippe Zittoun\, and Ressources Minérales et Transitions (2022) with Sylvain Le Berre and Yann Gunzburger\, as well as many other articles on these topics in Revue Internationale de Politique Comparée\, Revue Française de Sociologie\, Natures Sciences Sociétés\, Critical Policy Studies\, Environment & Planning C or Extractive Industries and Society. \nAndreas Folkers (Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen) is a sociologist with research interests spanning political\, economic\, and environmental sociology\, social theory and science and technology studies. He is a post-doc at the Justus-Liebig University Gießen\, Institute for Sociology where he heads a research project on climate risks in finance. He is currently (Sep 2022 – June 2023) Fellow at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study\, School of Social Science. His work investigates the bio- and technopolitics of contemporary societies from a perspective that combines the analytical sensibilities of STS with approaches in (critical) social theory. He has worked on topics such as disaster preparedness and critical infrastructure protection\, the energy transition\, and symbio-socialities. He is currently PI of a DFG-funded research project on stranded assets and climate risks in finance. The project looks at the “pipelines” between fossil and financial capital and analyses attempts to govern financial risks associated with decarbonization. In addition\, I’m writing a (second) book tentatively titled “Fossil Modernity. A Natural History of the Present” on the rise\, fall\, and afterlives of the cataclysmic ligature between modern societies and fossil fuels. \n \nInformation and registration\n\n\n\nDate: Thursday May 11\, 2023\, 5 pm – 7 pm \nVenue: EHESS\, 54 bd Raspail 75006 Paris\, room BS1_28. \nThe session will also be streamed by videoconference. SUMMARY:Cerna seminar with Biliana Yontcheva (DICE)
DESCRIPTION:The seminar with Biliana Yontcheva (DICE) will take place at 16:00 in Salle Vendome. \nBiliana will talk about here research on: \n\nChain formation and consumer welfare on the retail pharmacy market \n“The present paper evaluates the effects of deregulated ownership and horizontal integration on the retail pharmacy market. Using data on the full population of reimbursed prescriptions in Slovakia in 2017\, we examine whether outlets of pharmacy chains perform better than their independent counterparts in terms of consumer preferences and operating costs. Our preliminary findings indicate that consumers perceive pharmacy chains as having higher quality on average than independent outlets\, although there is substantial heterogeneity in the effects\, both across chain brands and across consumer types. We do not find evidence for substantial productivity gains due to chain affiliation. The growth of chain formats appears to be driven by an optimized location selection policy\, which allows companies to realize substantial economies of scale.” \nSee you there! \n  \nBest wishes\,\nSven

SUMMARY:CERNA Research Seminar will welcome Claire Montialoux (UC Berkeley)
DESCRIPTION:We have the pleasure to announce Claire Montialoux (UC Berkeley) as the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. The seminar will take place on Wednesday 05 April 2023 at 16:00 in Salle Vendome. \nClaire will talk about here research on: \nRacial Inequality\, Minimum Wage Spillovers\, and the Informal Sector \nThis paper studies how a national minimum wage affects wages\, and in particular\, racial earnings disparities in a middle-income country with a large informal sector. Our context is the Brazilian economy\, characterized by persistently large racial disparities and the availability of detailed labor force surveys and administrative matched employer-employee data with information on race. We analyze the effect of large increases in the minimum wage that occurred between 1999 and 2009. Using a variety of research designs and identification strategies\, we obtain three main findings. First\, the increase in the minimum wage erased the racial earnings gap up to the 10th percentile of the national wage distribution and up to the 30th percentile in the lowest wage region\, the Northeast. Second\, there is no evidence of significant reallocation of workers from the formal sector to the informal sector. This can be explained by the fact that the minimum wage is de-facto binding in the informal sector (excluding agriculture\, domestic workers\, and the self-employed). Third\, we do not find evidence of significant dis-employment effects\, or of white-nonwhite labor-labor substitution. As a result\, the minimum wage increases of the 2000s led to a large decline in the economy-wide racial income gap in Brazil. \nPaper: http://www.clairemontialoux.com/files/DGLM2021.pdf \nSlides: https://www.dropbox.com/s/weql5poukahyyjk/DGLM_slides_NBERSI.pdf?dl=0

SUMMARY:The seminar Economic expertise and environmental actions will welcome François Thoreau and Bregje van Veelen
DESCRIPTION:This session will explore the tentative ecological transformation of agricultural business by focusing on cattle breeding. It will consider the assemblage\, promises and limits of two infrastructures oriented towards the greening of farming: genomic infrastructure and green finance.   \nFrançois Thoreau (SPIRAL\, University of Liège) – Genomic infrastructure as ecological remediation ? \nGenomic infrastructure proposes to redefines bodies and the ways to approach them. However\, it does so in very different fashions for humans (medical endeavors) and for animals (livestock farming). Genomic infrastructure performs a distinct way of approaching life by decomposing it into large data ensembles and subsequently re-compositing it according to various uses – therapeutic\, productive\, etc. Focusing on the case of cattle breeding\, the presentation proposes to characterize this infrastructure as re-mediation\, that is as the manufacturing of peculiar kinds of relations\, hence\, as a proposal for new relational ethics. Specifically\, it will interrogate the ecological promises of genomic infrastructure: healthier animals with better resistance to stress and diseases and longer life-expectancy\, more biologically diverse herds\, or less greenhouse gas emissions. Would genomic infrastructure be\, finally\, the perfect technofix? \nBregje van Veelen (LUCSUS\, Lund University) – Milking the system? The role of green finance in decarbonizing agriculture \nDespite growing calls to make financial flows consistent with Paris Agreement goals\, to date little is known about the environmental and climate impact of ‘green finance’. Drawing on literature which explores how resources are assembled for investment\, I explore where green finance ‘lands’. I do this by tracing the implementation of a green financial instrument\, the Green Schuldschein\, issued by a multinational dairy company. I show that flows of green finance in the agricultural sector are unlikely to land in places where they can have the most significant climate impact\, but rather in places where they remain distant from nature’s unruly qualities. This highlights the importance of examining both financial and the extra-economic relations of the wider fields in which new ‘green’ financial instruments are situated to assess their potential environmental impact.   \n \nFrançois Thoreau (SPIRAL\, University of Liège) is Associate Professor at Liège University and a Research associate from the F.R.S.-FNRS with Spiral (ULiège). He works on  interdisciplinary issues with sciences and technologies in society\, at the locus between social sciences and health-environment issues. He was funded with a Starting Grant from the ERC (2021-2026) for the project “The BoS” (The Body Societal: Unfolding Genomics Infrastructure in Cattle Livestock Selection and Reproduction). (Source: Université de Liège) \nBregje van Veelen (LUCSUS\, Lund University) is Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS). She researches how low-carbon transition pathways emerge and evolve\, and how they can be implemented in a way that is democratic and fair. SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar will host Jean Frances and Stéphane Le Lay
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar will host \nJean Frances \nENSTA Bretagne (FOAP-CNAM)\, associate researcher at GSPR-EHESS \nand Stéphane Le Lay \nInstitut de psychodynamique du travail\, Paris \n  \nto discuss the book they co-authored with Jean-Marc Corsi \n  \nMa thèse en 180 secondes \nQuand la science devient spectacle \n \n\n\n\n\nIntroduction à la discussion : Victoria Brun \nBack cover: À l’heure des controverses scientifiques par tweets et messages Facebook pourquoi une enquête sociologique au long cours consacrée à « Ma thèse en 180 secondes » ? \nMy thesis in 180 seconds. When science becomes a spectacle \nAt a time of scientific controversies through tweets and Facebook messages\, why a long-term sociological investigation dedicated to “My thesis in 180 seconds”? Three researchers answered affirmatively. This book\, which results from four – unquiet – years of work\, details the rapid installation of a competitive and playful device in the field of higher education that encourages doctoral students to question their relationship with the rules of the scientific profession. Thanks to the intense work of communication “tricks of the trade” deployed during training courses provided by all the academic institutions involved in the competition\, the participants compete against one another in a tournament where scientific popularization regresses as the promising gesture\, so common in the neoliberal organization\, of project-based science takes hold. But where the “fun and sexy” show prevails\, what remains of the work ethic? \nJean-Marc Corsi\, Jean Frances et Stéphane Le Lay\, Ma thèse en 180 secondes. DESCRIPTION:The CEA\, the University of Caen/MRSH\, Mines Paris-PSL\, the Dôme de Caen and the IRTS Normandie-Caen \nare pleased to invite you to participate in the  \nLaunch of Promethee \nProjet d’Observatoire Multidisciplinaire de l’Énergie\npour une Transition Humaine\, Économique et Écologique \n  \nA multidisciplinary observatory of energy sobriety \nand adaptation practices to energy crises \n  \nMarch 28\, 2023\nFondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme\n54 Bd Raspail\, 75006 Paris \nLancement de Prométhée \n  \nThe event will be held in French.\nPlease register (50 participants) by email: muriel.bollengier@unicaen.fr \n  \nThe current energy crisis is leading French consumers (households\, local authorities\, companies) to significantly reduce their energy consumption\, as encouraged by the public authorities\, particularly through “energy sobriety” actions. Such reductions in energy demand also appear to be decisive in the longer term to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050\, but require the adoption of new ways of using energy and possibly changing lifestyles. This crisis context and how energy consumers will adapt are worth observing closely as they will provide indications on the possible levers that can also be activated as a priority and in the long-term to face the climate crisis. \nFor more details download the event flyer \n  \nPour en savoir plus télécharger le flyer \nProgramme \n \n\n  \nImage : Pictoscribe\, « Thanks to Prometheus« \, 2019. SUMMARY:Session of the Seminar on Digital Environmental Policies will welcome Jeanne Oui (IRISSO\, IFRIS)
DESCRIPTION:The next session of the Seminar on Digital Environmental Policies organized by the Center for the Sociology of Innovation (CSI Mines Paris – PSL) and the Center for Internet and Society (CIS) will be held on\n \nThursday\, March 16\, 2023 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm\nby videoconference \n  \n  \nJeanne Oui\n(IRISSO\, IFRIS)\n \nEnvironmental governance through digital technologies\nThe case of cereal farming\nSummary: In a context where agriculture faces strong environmental controversies calling into question the objectives and techniques underlying agricultural productivism\, digital tools are put forward as one of the solutions that would facilitate the sector’s ecological transition. Satellites\, software\, decision support tools\, sensors and algorithms would allow for new modernity in agriculture\, both technologically and environmentally. At the crossroads of sociology and Science and Technology Studies (STS)\, Jeanne Oui examines the ecological promise of digital agriculture by delving into the knowledge\, markets and uses of these tools. Based on a qualitative survey of scientists\, companies and farmers in France and the United States\, her presentation will focus on the history of this technological promise for conventional agriculture\, and on the political and technical effects of an environmental governance of agricultural practices through digital technologies. \n  \nThe seminar will be held in French. Participation is upon registration only\, please use this form to register. \nLearn more about the seminar’s objectives and program. \nContact: Clément Marquet \n  \nPhoto credit : Jeanne Oui\, Cornell University-College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)

SUMMARY:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” will welcome Stéphanie Barral and Alice Valiergue
DESCRIPTION:This session will explore the carbon economy through the implementation and coordination of greenhouse gas offset markets. What economy and what markets are being structured around carbon\, and through what instruments? What role do expertise and criticism play in the development and evolution of these markets? \nStéphanie Barral (INRAE\, LISIS) – Low carbon label\, a level playing field?\n \nSince the mid-2010s\, the French Ministry of Ecology has been coordinating a voluntary greenhouse gas emissions offsetting device\, the Low Carbon Label. Its aims are\, on the one hand\, to encourage participation by a wide range of economic actors who are willing to reduce their carbon footprint or\, on the other hand\, to make virtuous changes in their production systems in order to benefit from the sale of carbon credits. The deployment of the Low Carbon Label is based on the construction of a strict equivalence system between offset and avoided emissions\, according to an accounting logic common in this type of instrument. In this presentation\, I will focus on the instrumentation of this equivalence and its implications in terms of coordination costs\, in order to discuss the economy of means at work to support environmental actions that are ultimately very limited. \nAlice Valiergue (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Santé Publique\, CSO) – With and Against Criticism: An Analysis of the Development of the Carbon Offset Market from 2000 to Present \n \nThis presentation will focus on the findings of a sociological survey on the carbon offset market\, and more specifically on companies that have no obligation to subscribe to these services but buy carbon credits from private operators\, NGOs or companies to offset their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The following question was the starting point of the research: if this market is controversial\, how can the growth of this market be explained and how can companies who seek to protect their reputation continue to buy carbon credits? Based on the survey findings\, the presentation will address the role played by criticism in the development of this market. \n \nStéphanie Barral (INRAE\, LISIS) is a sociologist and an INRAE researcher [INRAE is a national research institute for agriculture\, food and nutrition\, and the environment]. Her work focuses on this question: can environmental problems be resolved with economic instruments? Through the cases of ecological compensation and carbon offsetting\, she develops a sociology of environmental markets from three standpoints: 1) the articulation between environmental sciences\, public regulations and the market; 2) the selection effects that result from their implementation; 3) the transformation of the agricultural sector through the integration of farms into these new markets. \nAlice Valiergue (EHESP\, CSO) is a post-doctoral fellow at the Health Chair of Sciences Po. Her doctoral dissertation\, completed at the Centre de Sociologie des Organisations\, focused on the carbon offset market. She has since worked on the sociology of drugs in French Polynesia and her current post-doctoral research is on an experimentation of a new mode of healthcare reimbursement. She is the author of the book Compensation carbone. La fabrique d’un marché contesté (Sorbonne Université Presses). \n  \nThe session will also be streamed by videoconference. The link will be sent upon registration just before the seminar. \nThe seminar is open to all. SUMMARY:Seminar Series on Digital Environmental Policies will welcome Thomas Beauvisage (Sense\, Orange Labs) et Jean-Samuel Beuscart (i3-SES\, Télécom Paris)
DESCRIPTION:In support of the strike against the pension reform\, and in agreement with the speakers\, the January 31 session of the Digital Environmental Policies seminar\, hosting Thomas Beauvisage (Sense\, Orange Labs) and Jean-Samuel Beuscart (SES Department\, Télécom Paris\, i3)\, for a presentation entitled “Measuring the environmental footprint of the digital economy: issues and controversies” is postponed to Thursday\, March 9\, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. \nSeminar Series on Digital Environmental Policies will welcome\n \nThomas Beauvisage (Sense\, Orange Labs) \net Jean-Samuel Beuscart (Département SES\, Télécom Paris\, i3) \nMesurer l’empreinte environnementale du numérique : \nenjeux et controverses \n(Measuring the environmental footprint of digital technology:issues and controversies) \n \nThe seminar is organized by Clément Marquet (CSI\, Mines Paris – PSL\, i3) and Sophie Quinton (Inria\, GDS EcoInfo)\, as part of the Politiques environnementales du numérique [Digital Environmental Policies] working group of the GDR Internet\, AI and Society. \nThe seminar will be held by videoconference. Participation is upon registration only. \nFor the past few years\, the environmental consequences of digital technologies have been the subject of increasing attention [1]\, calling into question the promise of a convergence between ecological and digital transition. While these alerts are not altogether new [2]\, only recently have they attracted the attention of French political authorities [3]. This policy interest arises as the State and economic players invest massively in large-scale digital projects such as 5G\, artificial intelligence\, the autonomous vehicle and the Internet of Things. So many projects whose consequences cannot be accurately anticipated\, but which in fact involve a proliferation of equipment and data. More generally\, there still is a lack of in-depth reflection on the direct environmental impacts (energy and resource requirements\, pollution\, etc.) and indirect impacts (optimizations driving the overall increase in production and consumption\, etc.) of digital technology. \nFor more information

SUMMARY:The next session of the Seminar on Digital Environmental Policies will welcome Patrick Brodie (University Dublin College)
DESCRIPTION:The next session of the Seminar on Digital Environmental Policies \n  \norganized by the Center for the Sociology of Innovation (CSI Mines Paris – PSL) \nand the Center for Internet and Society (CIS) will be held on \n \nThursday\, February 28\, from 3 to 5 pm \nby videoconference \n  \nPatrick Brodie (University Dublin College) \nEnvironment\, Territory\, \nand the Data/Energy Nexus in Ireland’s Borderlands \n \n  \n  \nSummary: In November 2020\, a video surfaced on Twitter showing the earth moving underneath the feet of a local hillwalker. The video was documenting a massive peat landslide at the border between County Donegal (in the Republic of Ireland\, ROI) and County Tyrone (in Northern Ireland\, NI)\, which was caused by the construction of the 19-turbine Meenbog Wind Farm. The landslide destroyed a vast swathe of active peat bog and polluted a significant watershed which spanned both sides of the border\, prompting governmental and legal action from agencies and organizations in ROI\, NI\, and the UK. \nA key piece of the puzzle\, however\, was that the Meenbog Wind Farm had in 2019 sold all its future energy to global logistics and cloud giant Amazon Web Services to power its data center operations in Dublin\, over 200km away from this wind farm site in rural Donegal. The data infrastructure company’s decarbonization efforts were transported along toxic fault lines of colonial partition\, the imagined perpetual growth of data systems having unintended consequences at the still-contested border between ROI and NI. By analyzing data center and energy policy\, public discourse around these infrastructural systems\, and drawing upon site-specific fieldwork\, this presentation will confront the territorial re-organization of political and environmental relations through emerging renewable energy and data entanglements. Engaging with vibrant discourses of “green extractivism” during the transition to renewable energy\, the talk will approach the region of Ireland where the peatslide occurred as a site of generative friction concerning what present and future extractive energy and data supply chains will look like\, who will bear their burdens\, and who will have agency in shaping them. \nFor more information and to register

SUMMARY:Cerna Research seminar will welcome Roxana Fernandez (ENSAE\, Crest)
DESCRIPTION:We have the pleasure to announce Roxana Fernandez (ENSAE\, Crest) as the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. \nThe ALUR law and the opening of Drives in the French grocery retail sector \n(with Bonnet\, C.\, Bouamra\, Z.\, Chambolle\, C.) \n  \nOver the last decade\, online grocery shopping has experienced a rapid expansion. To overcome the lack of success of delivery services\, many retailers have introduced Click-and-collect services\, allowing shoppers to buy online and later pick up their baskets at a chosen place and time. The provision of Click-and-collect services usually entails the construction of new facilities by either expanding stores or by building stand-alone pick-up points. In France\, this Click-and-collect service is called Drive and\, in 2018\, Drive represented 81% of online grocery sales against 19% of home delivery (Nielsen (2018)). The upsurge in the opening of Drives raised concerns to French policy-makers and pushed for a new regulation in 2014.  This paper assesses the impact of the ALUR law that constrains the opening of Drives with warehouses in France. We run difference-in-differences analyses over the period 2009-2017 and show that the law had a large and heterogeneous negative effect on the opening of Drive warehouses. Furthermore\, we analyze the effect on revenues and find that the ALUR law had a negative effect on revenue growth.  \n
