SUMMARY:The CSI Guest Seminar will welcome Michèle Dupré and Jean-Christophe Le Coze
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nMichèle Dupré \nLabour sociologist\, Researcher at the Centre Max Weber – UMR 283 \nand Jean-Christophe Le Coze \nResearch Director at the French national institute for industrial environment and risks | INERIS · Accidental Risk Division Department \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nntroduction to the discussion by Hafid Ait Sidi Hammou \nBack cover: Les accidents industriels majeurs sont rares\, mais ils affectent leur environnement naturel et social comme nous l’ont rappelé la catastrophe d’AZF à Toulouse en 2001 et l’incendie de l’usine Lubrizol à Rouen en septembre 2019. \nPlants\, materials and people. Industrial safety in the chemical industry \nMajor industrial accidents are rare\, but they do affect their natural and social environment\, as we were reminded by the the AZF disaster in Toulouse in 2001 and the fire at the Lubrizol plant in Rouen in September 2019. Many actors\, both internal and external to companies\, are involved in the prevention of these risks. This book details the results of an immersion survey of five companies in the specialty chemicals industry. This approach to the daily life of these high-hazard companies is unprecedented\, not only in the academic world\, but also in other spheres of society. Through their descriptive and ethnographic approach\, the two authors aim to provide an understanding of the complexity\, both social and technical\, of these industrial companies. The prevention of major industrial hazards is a difficult topic that may be addressed in a variety of ways. Taking an approach at the crossroads of the sociology of work\, employment and activity and the sociology of risk systems provides an original reading of this activity shaped by the interaction of numerous company-internal and external actors. In a perspective of public sociology\, the two authors have set out to make the reading accessible to all. \nMichèle Dupré et Jean-Christophe Le Coze\, Des usines\, des matières et des hommes\, Presses des mines\, 2021. \n \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. SUMMARY:Reflection on the Materiality of Transition – 8th session of the Webinar TTI.5
DESCRIPTION:Reflection on the Materiality of Transition – 8th session of the Webinar TTI.5\nThis 8th session of the Webinar TTI.5 will be held online on Friday\, January 19\, 2024\, from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM. The session will be held in French. \nThe extraction\, importation\, and transformation of raw materials play a crucial role in the low-carbon transition. Emerging technologies such as renewable energy\, electric vehicles\, and energy storage devices rely on so-called rare metals\, such as lithium and cobalt. \nHowever\, the use of these resources can lead to environmental problems\, mining-related conflicts\, challenging working conditions\, and inequalities in access to the benefits of the transition. The geopolitical balance is disrupted. \nThus\, the responsible management of raw materials becomes a crucial issue to ensure an environmentally sustainable and socially equitable transition. \nProgram\nTo discuss all these topics\, three specialists are announced among the speakers : \nDamien GOETZ | Professor-Researcher at GEOSCIENCES Mines Paris – PSL\nMineral resources specialist – with expertise in extraction methods\, economic assessment of development\, and availability for economic and industrial growth – Damien GOETZ is a teaching researcher at GEOSCIENCES. He is in charge of the Mineral Resources option for transitions in the education of engineers at Mines Paris – PSL. \nBrice LAURENT | Researcher at CSI Mines Paris – PSL\nResearcher at the Center for the Sociology of Innovation (CSI)\, Brice LAURENT also serves as the director of the Social Sciences\, Economy\, and Society Directorate at the French Agency for Food\, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES). His research focuses on the relationships between science and democracy\, investigated through surveys conducted in places involved in the promotion\, regulation\, or contestation of innovation. His current work includes inquiries into experimental forms of innovation and research projects addressing political issues related to subsurface resources. \nFarah BENRAMDANE | Phd Student at theUniversity Bordeaux-Montaigne\nFarah BENRAMDAME has been working on a thesis since 2021 within the École doctorale Montaigne – Humanités in partnership with the unité de recherche Cultures et Littératures des Mondes Anglophones (CLIMAS). Her thesis focuses on « Conflits miniers et territoire “cédés” : la remise en cause systématique de la souveraineté amérindienne aux Etats-Unis »and is under the supervision of Lionel LARRE\, President of the University Bordeaux-Montaigne and professor of American civilization. \nIf you wish to attend\, please connect at 1:30 pm via zoom\, the link will be communicated on this page. \nTTI.5 team contact: tti.5@minesparis.psl.eu \nLearn more about webinars TTI.5

SUMMARY:Seminar series on Economic expertise and environmental actions
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes \n  \nKamilla Karhunmaa \nUniversity of Helsinki and SPIRAL\, University of Liège \net Céline Granjou \nLESSEM-INRAE \nCarbon offsetting \n  \nThis session explores the ways in which carbon offsetting mobilizes arguments and expertise from soil science\, economics and other fields to produce new entities and recast the way existing objects such as soils tend to be understood. \nKamilla Karhunmaa \nFrom charity to crime to commodity: settling the economic form of carbon offsetting in Finland \nWhile economics seems to be everywhere\, particularly in market-based environmental policy instruments\, this presentation discusses the support that economics and economists gather from other fields to be convincing. I present the case of Compensate\, a seller of carbon offsets in Finland\, which raised a public discussion\, criminal case\, and legal reform on the status of carbon offsetting in Finland. Following Compensate’s trajectory shows how the tangibility\, reciprocity and remunerative capacity of carbon offsets is questioned. Further\, the case demonstrates how the economic form of carbon offsetting requires significant institutional support to be formalized and even then\, results only in a temporary stabilization. \nCéline Granjou \nThe promises of soil carbon sequestration : unpacking the politics of carbon quantification \nThe Paris Agreement reached at the COP 21 in 2015 signal the new centrality of carbon sinks\, including soils\, as a key means of enabling climate stability. Holding three times as much carbon as the atmosphere\, soil is considered the largest terrestrial reservoir of carbon that we could manage and enhance. How does the rising promotion of soil as carbon sink in climate policies reconfigure the way in which we come to know and manage soils ? \nI will first introduce the ANR-funded POSCA project : its team is completing a vast sociological investigation both into soil sciences academia and on-the-ground organizations of soil improvement and management. On the basis of that field-work\, we observe a contestable\, and contested\, quest for measuring and quantifying soil carbon stocks and fluxes\, that tends to recast soils as reservoirs of carbon that we could measure\, model\, map and optimize both at global and local scales. Ways of knowing and managing soils tend to be polarized by a double focus on carbon (i.e. a movement of carbonization) and on measuring (i.e. a quest for quantification). The politics of carbon quantification entail a number of practical and political issues\, as accounting for soil carbon takes precedence over securing soils as complex\, evolving and vulnerable entities for the future. \n \n\n  \nKamilla Karhunmaa is apostdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki\, and a scientific collaborator with the SPIRAL research center at the University of Liège. Her current research\, developed as part of the Climakedo project at the University of Helsinki\, focuses on the knowledge policies and practices underpinning voluntary carbon offsets in northern countries\, using an approach at the crossroads of science and technology studies (STS) and environmental policy. \nCéline Granjou is Director of Research in sociology at the EcoSystèmes et Sociétés en Montagne Laboratory (LESSEM-INRAE) at Grenoble-Alpes University. Her research lies at the crossroads between the sociology of science and technology and the sociology of the environment. She is currently part of the interdisciplinary team in sociology and soil sciences of the POSCA project – The Promises of Soil Carbon Sequestration Knowledge\, aiming to studying how the promotion of soil as Carbon sink in climate policies reconfigures the ways in which we know and manage soils\, at the level of soil carbon science (agendas\, research infrastructures)\, of its regulation (standardization and standardization of methods for evaluating and measuring soil carbon)\, and its management (strategies for optimizing carbon stocks and their effects on agricultural and forestry activities and sectors). \nate: Friday\, January 19\, 2024\, 11am-1pm \nVenue: Mines Paris-PSL\, 60 boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris. SUMMARY:HDR defense of Thomas Beauvisage Digital sociologist\, researcher in Orange's SENSE department
DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Sociology of Innovation (i3\, UMR CNRS 9217\, Mines Paris-PSL) has the pleasure of inviting you to attend the HDR (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches) in STS (Sciences\, Technologies\, Societies) defense of \nThomas Beauvisage \nSociologist of digital technology\, Senior Researcher at Orange’s department Sociology and Economics of Networks and Services (SENSE) \n  \nMonday\, December 18\, 2023\, 2pm to 5:30pm \nat Mines Paris-PSL\, 60 bd. Saint-Michel\, Paris\, amphitheater L108 B \n  \n  \nOriginal dissertation title \nSociologie du cookie publicitaire \n[Sociology of advertising cookie] \n  \nAbstract: For a quarter of a century\, the cookie has been the keystone of online advertising. This simple mechanism enabling websites to store information about web users\, has been quickly captured by the advertising industry\, which has built its market infrastructure around it. This dissertation describes this capture by drawing on the cross-disciplinary contributions of the sociology of markets and the sociology of innovation\, as well as Science and Technology Studies. It offers a description of the online advertising market through its key infrastructure\, the cookie. To do so\, it describes the trajectory of the cookie as a web innovation and as a market infrastructure for advertising\, and analyses the role it plays in the ordinary work of targeting consumers and valorizing advertising space. Finally\, it shows how the market dimension of the cookie has been coupled with a moral burden since the implementation of the RGPD in 2018. \nThis work contributes to three fields of the social sciences: science and technology studies\, by showing how actors seize the agency of technical devices to compose market arrangements; the sociology of markets\, through the description of a turn towards the individualization of the market relationship in the digital regime; and the field of big data studies\, by providing a series of empirical and situated observations\, accounting for the endogenous logics in the use of personal data. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe jury consists of:  \nFranck COCHOY\, Professor of sociology at the Interdisciplinary Solidarity\, Societies\, Territories Laboratory (LISST)\, University of Toulouse Jean-Jaurès. Rapporteur \nGérald GAGLIO\, Professor of sociology at GREDEG (Research Group in Law\, Economics and Management)\, University Côte d’Azur. Rapporteur        \nDonald MACKENZIE\, Professor of sociology\, School of Social & Political Science\, University of Edinburgh\, UK. Examiner \nAlexandre MALLARD\, Senior researcher at CSI (Center for the Sociology of Innovation – i3\, UMR CNRS 9217\, Mines Paris-PSL) (Guarantor). Examiner \nValérie SCHAFER\, Professor of Contemporary European History at the Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH)\, University of Luxembourg\, Luxembourg. Rapporteur \n \nPlease let Thomas Beauvisage know of your attendance\, this will help organize the HDR defense and the following reception. \n \nFor more information on preparing an HDR at CSI (Center for the Sociology of Innovation – i3\, UMR CNRS 9217\, Mines Paris-PSL) please contact Fabian Muniesa\, head of the STS specialization (PhD/HDR).

SUMMARY:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes Kristin Asdal and Tone Huse
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes \n  \nKristin Asdal and Tone Huse \n  \nto discuss their book \nNature-Made Economy \nCod\, Capital\, and the Great Economization of the Ocean \n  \nThis session will be an opportunity to discuss the just-published book Nature-Made Economy: Cod\, Capital\, and the Great Economization of the Ocean with its authors. The discussion will be introduced by Clément Foutrel\, (CSI) and Baptiste Parent (CIRED). \n  \n\n  \n“Nature-Made Economy” tells the story about the great economization of the ocean through the little tools and valuations that make this happen. By following the famous codfish around\, across policy documents\, at sites where prices are set\, qualities are valued\, and cod habits are sought disciplined\, it traces how nature acts upon economy and vice versa. Throughout this\, the book shows how different “versions of economization” materialize\, are grown and cared for\, but also fail\, sometimes quite spectacularly. \nKristin Asdal is Professor of STS at the TIK Centre for Technology\, University of Oslo. She is the coauthor\, with Hilde Reinertsen\, of Doing Document Analysis: A Practice-Oriented Method\, and coeditor of Humans\, Animals and Biopolitics: The More-Than-Human Condition\, Sage\, 2022. \nTone Huse is Associate Professor of STS in the Department of Archaeology\, History\, Religious Studies and Theology at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. SUMMARY:Les séminaires polytechnique santé: Will health prevention be algorithmic?
DESCRIPTION:Seminar #4: Can the quest for “ageing well” benefit from algorithmic approaches based on massive data?\nStaying healthy and independent for as long as possible is a public health issue. Identifying bio-markers of aging\, and combining them with other lifestyle data\, seems a promising approach to meeting this objective. A better understanding of the biological and behavioral processes involved could lead to the implementation of preventive programs to avert dependency. The aim of this seminar is to take stock of a recent initiative in this field\, the Inspire program\, and to draw lessons for actions that could be carried out on a large scale. What do we know so far? What lessons can be drawn for prevention? \n \nRegistration

This half-day conference aims to present the first findings of the project. \nThe “involuntary collective sobriety” announced in France for winter 2022-2023 provided an opportunity for a discussion in the public arena of the various energy transition scenarios\, and revitalized the notion of sobriety. How are discourses encouraging the moderation of energy consumption perceived by civil society as a whole\, in a social and cultural context based on the idea of development and growth? And how is this call for sobriety put into practice? Finally\, isn’t “sobriety” – often understood as a mere “sacrifice” to consumption aimed at maintaining the techno-economic system – the key to individual and collective autonomy for a genuine energy transition that is both socio-technical and political? \nThis observatory has received financial support from Ademe. SUMMARY:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes Alexander Dobeson and Lise Cornilleau
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes \nAlexander Dobeson and Lise Cornilleau \nLand and property \nThis session will explore dynamics of land appropriation\, valuation and capitalization. \nAlexander Dobeson \nReimagining the Green and Pleasant Land: From Conservation to Capitalisation in Rural England \nThis talk outlines the metamorphosis of land from being considered a special good shielded from unfettered markets and speculation to its recent rediscovery as an asset class. Against the backdrop of austerity\, agricultural restructuring\, and the concentration of land ownership in rural England\, it demonstrates how this discursive shift has reconfigured the moral imaginary of ‘The green and pleasant land’ (William Blake) by creating an unlikely alliance between landowners\, resource economists\, property managers\, and conservationists. This alliance values land and nature itself in terms of future cash flows. \nLise Cornilleau \nThe ‘boundary work’ of financialization in the case of farmland: data\, metrics\, regulation \n  \n\nAlexander Dobeson is Assistant professor at Copenhagen Business School’s Department of Management\, Society and Communication. \nLise Cornilleau is a lecturer and researcher at the Laboratoire Printemps – Professions\, Institutions\, Temporalités [Professions\, Institutions\, Temporalities]\, UFR of social sciences\, University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines-CNRS. \nInformation and registration\n\n\n\nVenue: Mines Paris-PSL\, 60 boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris. SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Kregg Hetherington Concordia University Research Chair in Environmental Ethnography
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nKregg Hetherington \nConcordia University Research Chair in Environmental Ethnography \n  \nto discuss his book \n  \nThe Government of Beans \nRegulating Life in the Age of Monocrops \n  \n\n  \nIntroduction to the discussion by Guilhaum Panas \nBack cover: The Government of Beans is about the rough edges of environmental regulation\, where tenuous state power and blunt governmental instruments encounter ecological destruction and social injustice. At the turn of the twenty-first century\, Paraguay was undergoing dramatic economic\, political\, and environmental change due to a boom in the global demand for soybeans. Although the country’s massive new soy monocrop brought wealth\, it also brought deforestation\, biodiversity loss\, rising inequality\, and violence. Kregg Hetherington traces well-meaning attempts by bureaucrats and activists to regulate the destructive force of monocrops that resulted in the discovery that the tools of modern government are at best inadequate to deal with the complex harms of modern agriculture and at worst exacerbate them. The book simultaneously tells a local story of people\, plants\, and government; a regional story of the rise and fall of Latin America’s new left; and a story of the Anthropocene writ large\, about the long-term\, paradoxical consequences of destroying ecosystems in the name of human welfare. \nKregg Hetherington\, The Government of Beans. SUMMARY:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes Charlotte Glinel and Nelly Parès
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes \n  \nCharlotte Glinel and Nelly Parès \n  \nForest valorization \n  \nThis session will explore the intertwining of valuation processes\, forest management technologies and public policies in the valuation and management of forests in France. \nCharlotte Glinel \nValuing forests in the Anthropocene? The new faces of forest exploitatione \nVictims of climate change\, France’s forests are also defined in the climate and forestry arenas as allies in the fight against it. Whether in the context of France’s Low Carbon National Strategy\, or in the discourse of forestry and timber industry professionals\, forests are presented as “carbon sinks”. This symbolic valuation of forests\, which has led to conservationist framing in other latitudes\, as well as to their financial valuation in the form of carbon credits\, justifies another\, more traditional form of economic valorization in France: the intensification of forest exploitation. \nThis presentation shifts the focus away from the emblematic regions of forest industrialization\, and looks at how intensive silvicultural systems are discreetly and technically integrated into the management of more “multifunctional” forests in the Vosges and Mediterranean massifs. It is based on a multi-level qualitative survey of senior civil servants\, researchers and activists\, as well as field forest managers and workers. It will show how the implementation of knowledge rooted in the interactions between workers\, harvesting machines and forests adds substance to the political and silvicultural agendas for French forests. At the crossroads of sociology of techniques\, public action and environmental humanities\, the presentation sheds light on the valorization of forests through a sociology of ecological work. \nNelly Parès \nBetween economy and ecology: hybridizations and value debates in the French Mediterranean forests \nClimate change\, biodiversity erosion\, landscapes and living environments\, since the 1980s and 1990s\, forest areas have become the focus of renewed social and political concern. As debates on silvicultural practices and their institutionalization within public forestry and environmental policy unfold\, the discourse of scientific ecology is taking on an increasingly prominent role. Drawing on an analysis of the design and implementation of public policies\, together with discourse and textual analysis\, this presentation will examine the social work involved in interpreting the central concepts of scientific ecology by the various actors involved in forest management (owners\, managers\, political decision-makers\, associations\, users of forests for leisure activities)\, with a particular focus on Mediterranean forests with ecological\, social and economic characteristics that place them on the periphery of the industrial sector. Based on a typology of three major conceptions of the forest and its management (productive forest\, forest-environment and forest-living-system)\, I will show that\, far from merely opposing each other\, ecological and economic discourses tend to interpenetrate and mutually support each other; and that\, in contrast to the utilitarian and scientific-technical approach agreed upon by the proponents of the first two institutionalized conceptions\, the living-forest-system allows actors far removed from the spheres of public policy-making (users\, forestry associations) to support alternative practices and ways of thinking about the forest and its development. \n  \n\n\n\n  \nCharlotte Glinel is currently completing her PhD at SciencePo’s Center for the Sociology of Organizations (CSO). \nNelly Parès is a researcher at the Museum National de l’Histoire Naturelle (MNHN) \n  \nInformation and registration\nDate: Friday\, November 10\, 11am-1pm\n \nVenue: Mines Paris-PSL\, 60 boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris. SUMMARY:Autonomy and responsibility in organizations" seminar organized by the FIT2 Chair
DESCRIPTION:The next seminar on “Autonomy and responsibility in organizations” will provide food for thought on how to harness the experience and creativity of operators to improve the organization of work. \nMonday November 6\, 2023 at Mines Paris (salle Vendôme) from 5:30 p.m. sharp to 7:00 p.m. (in person and by videoconference). \nPlaces are limited\, and registration is free\, compulsory and validated via : \nchaire-fit2@minesparis.psl.eu \nAirbus Helicopters’ Blue Space: a creative space for blue-collar workers \nWith Martial Petit and Alexandre Facompré\, co-founders of Blue Space \nBluespace is a space for ideation and realization\, located at the very heart of the gleaming helicopter assembly lines\, to collect all the ideas operators have for facilitating their work. Based on an idea by Martial Petit\, a work analyst at Airbus Helicopters\, this “ideaspace” dedicated to blue-collar workers is now run by Alexandre Facompré\, himself a former workshop companion. He helps his colleagues to turn their ideas for parts or small tools into reality\, using additive manufacturing. A fantastic demonstration of work design in action. \nFor more information: Visite chez Airbus Helicopters pour présenter le design du travail en action – Chaire Fit2

SUMMARY:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” will welcome Antoine Fontaine and Camille Rivière
DESCRIPTION:his session will explore the entanglement of public policies and financing in the constitution and development of new resources for the energy transition at the territorial scale.   \nAntoine Fontaine \nFrom waste heat to recovered heat: which trajectories for decarbonization and energy decentralization? \nWhile half of the energy now consumed in Europe is used to produce heat or cold (for heating\, air conditioning and industrial needs)\, this production is still largely based on fossil fuels. Since the mid-2010s\, Europe and France have tried to implement a strategy to accelerate the decarbonization of the concerned sectors. In addition to focusing on the development of thermal renewable energies\, initiatives are also underway to recover so-called “waste heat”\, i.e. heat emitted incidentally by numerous industrial and urban processes\, to supply district heating networks. Heat thus reclassified as “recovered heat” is now a key element in the energy transition strategies of many local authorities. After showing how “waste heat” has gradually moved from the status of waste to that of a “transition resource”\, we will question the nature of the decarbonization and energy decentralization trajectories at play around recovered energies. \nCamille Rivière \nMoney markings and markdowns: the dynamics of greening the electricity industry in Guadeloupe \nThis presentation focuses on the process of greening the electricity industry in Guadeloupe. Since the early 2000s\, this territory has been subject to increasing calls for greater energy autonomy and the development of renewable energies. The financing of these transformations relies on a specific channel\, that of the contribution to the energy public service (CSPE)\, which initially ensured a principle of tariff equalization. We propose to study this particular financing circuit to shed light on the conflicts and controversies underpinning the energy transition. We have identified different groups of actors by analyzing their financing circuit. Within the industrial sector\, there are two distinct groups: on the one hand\, the incumbents\, who are major importers of carbon products\, and on the other\, the challengers\, who tend to promote renewable energies. Our focus is on the struggles between these actors to share the value distributed through the CSPE. In particular\, we are interested in the money-marking and markdown operations that were carried out on this circuit over the last 20 years. \nAntoine Fontaine is a CNRS Researcher at UMR Environnement\, Ville\, Société. \nCamille Rivière is a researcher at Crigen and associate researcher at CEMS. \nThe session will also be streamed by videoconference. SUMMARY:Interview with O. Bomsel\, professor of economics at Mines Paris-PSL\, and F Hartog\, historian at ENS and EHESS.
DESCRIPTION:The Bibliothèque de l’Ecole des Mines de Paris-PSL is continuing its program of talks and debates between researchers and experts. \nWe are delighted to invite you to attend a “Rencontre” between Olivier Bomsel\, Professor of Economics at Mines Paris-PSL\, and François Hartog\, historian at ENS and EHESS. \nEconomy\, politics and time \nFor almost three centuries\, it was believed that economics conditioned politics and history. This assumption is still very much alive\, both in public opinion and in the social sciences.\nOver the past twenty years\, however\, new approaches have been challenging this view.\nThese concern\, on the one hand\, the role of institutions in controlling violence and the social orders they establish. And secondly\, the end of progressivism\, in other words\, of an experience and representation of time driven by the future.\nThe theory of social orders and transformations in the order of time are reshaping the relationship between economics\, politics and history.\nThis meeting between François Hartog\, historian of time\, and Olivier Bomsel\, economist of institutions\, will give some examples.” \nThis exchange will be an opportunity to discover the richness of the dialogue between disciplines\, their place in the production of knowledge\, and above all to see the intellectual careers of two researchers whose work is widely recognized. \nA filmed interview will round off the event. \nTo find out more\, go to this page: https://www.bib.minesparis.psl.eu/bibliotheques/evenements-culturels/rencontre-francois-hartog-et-olivier-bomsel-12-octobre-2023/ \nOn-site or remote registration is compulsory to enable us to calibrate the event:\nhttps://framaforms.org/rencontre-francois-hartog-et-olivier-bomsel-12-octobre-2023-1695299880 \nHere’s the zoom link for remote assistance:\nhttps://minesparis-psl-eu.zoom.us/j/93741109292?pwd=OGYyWVkwSXpOVGp0QThYK05QYTlkdz09 >\nID de la réunion / Meeting ID : 93741109292\nMot de passe / Password : 336875 \nWe look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Study day: “Low-tech\, maintenance\, limits: how to rethink digital technology and its environmental impact”
DESCRIPTION:Organisation\nFree registration\, subject to availability. Please register here. \nEvent organized as part of the ALDIWO (Anti-Limits in the Digital World) project (project summary below). This project has received financial support from the CNRS through MIT’s interdisciplinary programs. \nIn French\, no videoconference \n\nOrganizers: Clément Marquet (CSI\, Mines Paris – PSL\, i3) and Florence Maraninchi (Verimag\, Grenoble INP – UGA) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription of the event\nThe digital sciences and technological development are dominated by a set of watchwords that are incompatible with the sobriety challenges we face: the race for computing power and the speed of exchanges\, accelerating hardware and software obsolescence\, and the invisibilization of the materiality of the technical device (see summary of the ALDIWO project below). Our aim for the event is to provide a forum for interdisciplinary exchange\, with a view to exploring other avenues of research towards a more sustainable – and possibly more denumerated – technical system. \nTo this end\, the event is structured in two parts: a first part devoted to presentations in sociology\, science & technology studies and computer science on alternative or devalued ways of relating to technological development – which are by no means ready-made solutions! A second part of the program will take the form of workshops aimed at outlining the prospects for interdisciplinary research to explore desirable and sustainable socio-technical-ecological futures\, by examining what ‘the digital’ would become if limits were reintroduced. \nMorning – Presentations (9:30am-12:15pm)\n\n9.15am – 9.30am: Welcome\n9.30am – 9.40am: Introduction – Clément Marquet (CSI\, Mines Paris – PSL\, i3) \n9.45am – 10.30am: Morgan Meyer (CSI\, CNRS\, i3) Low-techs and frontier objects\n10.30am – 11.15am: Jérôme Denis (CSI\, Mines Paris – PSL\, i3) et David Pontille (CSI\, CNRS\, i3) Maintenance and attention to fragility\n\nBreak \n\n11.30am – 12.15am: Florence Maraninchi (Verimag\, Grenoble INP – UGA) *Constraints\, limits\, optimization: a few examples from the inside of IT*.\n\nLunch 12.15am-2pm\nAfternoon – Workshops (2pm-5pm)\nObjective: raise multidisciplinary research questions \nWorkshop format will be announced soon \n  \nALDIWO (Anti-Limits in the Digital World) project rationale\nThe environmental impacts of digital technology are studied in research from two main angles: (1) so-called “Green IT” approaches focus on optimizing the power consumption of digital equipment in the usage phase; (2) so-called “Green-by-IT” approaches aim to reduce the environmental impacts of sectors other than digital technology\, thanks to digital technology. \nThese current approaches do not cover all the possible futures for the role of digital technology in current and future environmental upheavals: (1) there is no example in the history of digital technology where optimizations have not been accompanied by massive rebound effects that cancel out the gains of these optimizations; (2) the theoretical gains hoped for by offering a new generation of digital equipment are not always achieved in practice\, partly because one generation does not replace the previous one but is added to it\, at least for a while; (3) it is very difficult to assess the potential reduction in the environmental impact of the other sectors that are sought to be optimized thanks to digital technology. It’s a risky gamble to bet everything on the fact that these reductions will be significant enough to allow digital technology not to reduce its own impacts. \nIf digital technology is to play its part in the necessary reduction of global environmental impact\, it is essential to look beyond green-IT and green-by-IT. There is a whole area of potential research in computer science that falls under the category *Undone Science* [1]. These topics could be studied from within the discipline of computer science\, through a systematic re-examination of the design choices made for old and new systems alike\, a search for as yet unexplored points of potential optimization\, an assessment of the fragility of digital infrastructures in the face of drastic constraints imposed from outside\, and so on. \nIn our view\, however\, there are two main flaws in thinking that is confined to digital research fields: (a) it is intrinsically limited to the practical and technological aspects of the question\, with no clear idea\, for example\, of how to take into account the uses\, rebound effects and acceleration effects of all the other sectors\, and so on; (b) it suffers\, albeit sometimes unconsciously\, from a framework of thought that sees digital technologies as one (if not the only) means of opening up possible futures\, and any idea of limitation as part of an unrealistic pessimism or a reprehensible lack of confidence. Yet in his article “Predictions Without Futures” [2]\, S. Hong provides a perfect description of how the imaginary of the technological world\, far from opening up futures\, actually closes them up completely. \nIn this project\, we propose to explore the notion of “limit” within a multi-disciplinary framework\, in order to sketch out avenues for a research program that takes the project of digital sobriety seriously. \n[1] S. SUMMARY:12th edition of manufacture des idées
DESCRIPTION:The 12th Manufacture d’idées invites you to explore the theme of attention. This proposal is based on an observation: the effects of climate change\, the mass extinctions whose list is growing daily\, the democratic wobbles and social and political crises that our societies are going through\, reveal the fragility of the Earth’s ecosystem and the human organization of the world. Faced with these multiple challenges\, we need to ask ourselves not only what we need to pay attention to\, but what we can do with our attention. \nSpeakers will attempt to answer this double question by combining the knowledge and practices of researchers\, philosophers\, historians\, sociologists\, anthropologists and environmental specialists with the work of artists from all fields (visual artists\, writers\, dancers\, musicians\, filmmakers). \nFrom political\, post-colonial and “nature-cultural” struggles to conditions of habitability\, from the health of landscapes to the study of object maintenance and upkeep\, from stories of microbes to interspecific relations\, from the hybridization of expert and lay knowledge to the reappropriation of living environments worthy of being lived in\, particularly in care settings\, the aim is to better grasp how ecology and care correspond through these experiences and reflections. \nwith the participation of Jérôme Denis : \nFriday August 25th \n \n6:00 pm dialogue\n \n \nwith Jérôme Denis | Jeanne Guien\nPrendre soin des choses\nModerator : Julie Clarini\, editor-in-chief  Idées de L’Ob \nWhile the humanities and social sciences are now turning their attention to non-human beings and calling for care to be taken of the living\, they seem to be neglecting “things”\, whose central place in our lives was noted as long ago as 1965 by novelist Georges Perec. But why should caring for living beings mean disregarding objects and those who care for them? Are we even capable of describing the relationship between humans and things? Sociologists Jérôme Denis and David Pontille focus on maintenance activities and the all-too-frequently invisible people who perform them. Jérôme Denis will debate the ethical stakes and political implications of this delicate art of making things last\, with Jeanne Guien\, a specialist in obsolescence and the history of consumer society. At a time of hyper-productivism and the race to innovate\, they will tell us how this “care for things” can establish a new relationship with time and the world. \n \nUpload the programme-2023 \nTicket sales open to non-members from July 15: \n\nBilletterie

SUMMARY:Risk prevention and impact on health insurance coverage
DESCRIPTION:Seminar series:\nLa prévention en santé \nsera-t-elle algorithmique ?\nWill preventive healthcare\nbe algorithmic? \n  \nOn the initiative of the Centre de Recherche en Gestion\nof the École Polytechnique\n  \nAcadémie Nationale de Médecine\n16 RUE BONAPARTE 75006 Paris\n8:30 am-10:00 am\nKnowledge of the risk of disease occurrence through predictive algorithmic methods calls into question a founding principle of insurance coverage. If this risk is known\, pooling it within an insurance system loses its meaning\, and a move towards individualized contracts is a plausible option. \nAt the same time\, massive data processing makes it possible to monitor recommended behaviors using connected tools. With a connected watch\, for example\, it’s possible to know whether a given policyholder is following recommendations on physical exercise or other matters. Contracts can be modulated according to compliance behavior. Prevention\, both in terms of risk prediction and compliance with the measures implemented\, therefore seems an additional dimension for insurers to integrate. But the adoption of such an approach depends on cultural contexts. \nIs it possible to envisage individual forms of insurance based on greater control of policyholder behavior in contexts such as France? If this seems more plausible in liberal contexts\, isn’t there a French-style model to be created to take account of these new forms of prevention in the insurance world? If so\, what are its foundations? \nhosted by Etienne Minvielle \n  \nTo register\, click here \n

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar will welcome Thom Van Dooren University of Sydney | University of Oslo to discuss his book
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar will welcome \nThom Van Dooren \nUniversity of Sydney | University of Oslo \nto discuss his book \nThe Wake of Crows \nLiving and Dying in Shared Worlds \n  \n \n  \nIntroduction to the discussion : Roman Solé-Pomies \nBack cover: Crows can be found almost everywhere that people are\, from tropical islands to deserts and arctic forests\, from densely populated cities to suburbs and farms. Across these diverse landscapes\, many species of crow are doing well: their intelligent and adaptive ways of life have allowed them to thrive amid human-driven transformations. Indeed\, crows are frequently disliked for their success\, seen as pests\, threats\, and scavengers on the detritus of human life. But among the vast variety of crows\, there are also critically endangered species that are barely hanging on to existence\, some of them the subjects of passionate conservation efforts. \nThe Wake of Crows is an exploration of the entangled lives of humans and crows. Focusing on five key sites\, Thom van Dooren asks how we might live well with crows in a changing world. He explores contemporary possibilities for shared life emerging in the context of ongoing processes of globalization\, colonization\, urbanization\, and climate change. Moving among these diverse contexts\, this book tells stories of extermination and extinction alongside fragile efforts to better understand and make room for other species. Grounded in the careful work of paying attention to particular crows and their people\, The Wake of Crows is an effort to imagine and put into practice a multispecies ethics. In so doing\, van Dooren explores some of the possibilities that still exist for living and dying well on this damaged planet. \nThom Van Dooren\, The Wake of Crows. Living and Dying in Shared Worlds\, Columbia University Press\, 2019. \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. SUMMARY:”Doing ‘with’ to repair the world? The challenges of repair cultures”
DESCRIPTION:To attend by videoconference\, please register here to access the link \nDownload the programme \nFaire ‘avec’ pour réparer le monde ? Les enjeux des cultures de la réparation\nDoing ‘with’ to repair the world? The challenges of repair cultures\nCoordinators of this study day of the “Living in Transition” workshop:\nLaurence Allard[1]\, Clément Marquet[2] and Jérôme Boissonade[3] \nFaced with the challenges of the new climate regime\, the massive destruction of biodiversity and the economic\, cultural and social damage caused by neo-liberal globalization\, the critique of the consumerist model\, co-constitutive of the rise of industrial society\, calls for a profound transformation of the modes of production and use of objects\, and especially the practices of discarding. Consideration of our daily consumer objects’ life cycle on a planetary scale involves redefining the modalities of use and the development of infrastructures to ensure the maintenance and the repair of all things. The imperative of sobriety\, omnipresent in the situation of energy crisis\, intends to capture this call for the slowdown of consumption and the alleviation of the pressures on fossil and mineral resource extraction and the reduction of the accumulation of tons of waste. In this context\, a growing number of actors emphasize the pressing need for a reversal of values: sustainability versus disposability\, reuse versus abandonment\, repair versus destruction\, robustness versus obsolescence\, maintenance versus innovation\, redirection versus transition. \nFor this session of the “Living in Transition” workshop\, we propose to study the multiple facets of this impulse towards sustainability\, and to carefully analyze the tensions that this inversion of value may provoke. Making things last or repairing them are not “hypergoods” in themselves. After a period marked by “sustainable development”\, how can we question both the possibilities and the limits of maintenance and repair brought about by ecological transition policies? While receiving new attention\, with the emergence of socially valued sites\, the practices of repair\, waste sorting and reuse are also old practices: what can we learn from what is often played out at the margins\, and how can we avoid the sudden spotlight on third places\, makerspaces and other repair cafés from producing an exclusion of the most marginal social actors? How can we give a legitimate place to situated knowledge and infra-ordinary gestures alongside technical expertise? Moreover\, the problem of obsolescence cannot be considered only from the consumers’ point of view\, it is actively dependent on designers: how does the urgency of sustainability redefine design and production practices? To what extent does appropriation through transformation allow for a re-examination of the relationship to things and for overcoming the opposition between market value and use value? Finally\, to what extent can the relationship to others and to time characteristic of most “cultures of repair” take a part in ways of doing and living that have environmental and social justice as their horizon? \nTo address these questions\, we will welcome researchers in the sociology of science and technology\, in anthropology and in design sciences. \nProgramme \nMatinée (9h30-12h) “Maintenir et concevoir” \nIntroduction de Clément Marquet \n\nJérôme Denis[4] & David Pontille[5] : « Qui prend soin des choses ? SUMMARY:Teaching about the environmental consequences of digital technology
DESCRIPTION:Registration is required for this event \n \nThis study day is organized in the framework of the Digital Environmental Policies working group of the (GDR Internet\, AI and Society\, by Sylvain Bouveret (lecturer-researcher in computer science at Ensimag in Grenoble)\, Annabelle Collin (lecturer-researcher in mathematics at Enseirb-Matmeca in Bordeaux)\, Clément Marquet (lecturer-researcher in sociology at Mines Paris-PSL)\, Alexandre Monnin (lecturer-researcher at ESC Clermont) and Sophie Quinton (researcher in computer science at INRIA Grenoble). \nHow can we teach about the environmental consequences of digital technology? Rather than a technical reflection on the eco-design of digital services\, this study day proposes to discuss the challenges encountered when addressing with students the more global issues raised by the place of digital technologies in the climate and environmental crises. These issues require teachers to step away from the primary focus of their expertise to delve into other bodies of knowledge\, which are not always easy to identify or to master. Moreover\, the complexity and systemic nature of these problems confronts us with difficulties uncommonly encountered in digital education\, such as uncertainty or even controversy around existing knowledge. Thus\, the teacher’s posture but also the possible reactions of discomfort of students confronted with these issues raise many questions that deserve being discussed. \nThe objective of this event is therefore to share knowledge\, questions and experiences regarding the teaching of the environmental consequences of digital technologies\, whether it is taught by educators in the digital sciences or in the humanities and social sciences. Exchanges will focus as much on content\, interdisciplinary issues and epistemological difficulties as on pedagogical experiences related to the  subject. \n\n\nPhoto source : DocChewbacca (2007). « Salauds ! » (CC BY-SA 2.0)

The prize will be awarded to the best case study of a controversy dealing with an environmental topic\, selected among the papers written by students of the civil engineering program of Mines Paris–PSL. These controversy studies are carried out as part of the course Description of Controversies supervised by Madeleine Akrich\, sociologist and Research Director at the Center for the Sociology of Innovation (CSI). \n\n\n\nThe award will be granted to the best project\, based on the vote of the public\, after the presentation of the 5 nominated projects during the 1st TTI.5 Forum “Security issues related to climate change”. The event is on May 31st\, 2023 at the Maison de l’Océan\, 195 Rue Saint-Jacques\, Paris 75005. The award will be presented by Matthieu Mazière\, Director of the Civil Engineering Education Program at Mines Paris-PSL. \nLimited Seats\, registration to 1st TTI.5 Forum is required here. Discover the full program. \nControversy projects at Mines Paris – PSL\nThe course Description of Controversies is part of the curriculum for third-year students in the Civil Engineering program at Mines Paris-PSL. This course aims to educate engineering students about the evolution of their professional and civic context. The aim is to introduce them to the uncertain world of scientific and technical research by describing an object: a socio-technical controversy. \nThe topics proposed to the students have the following characteristics: an ongoing controversy\, on a targeted subject (for example: not “GMOs” but “the problems raised by the authorization of the cultivation of a transgenic potato plant which is controversial in a specific period and in a specific territory”)\, involving a diversity of protagonists (scientists\, experts\, jurists\, institutions\, members of parliament\, associations\, etc.)\, for which various sources of information are available (general press\, scientific press\, professional press\, discussion forums\, blogs\, websites\, parliamentary reports\, etc.). \nThe controversy study consists in a case study. A group of students follows a controversy in real time to discover its complexity and singularity. A team of sociologists specializing in the analysis of science and technology supervise the students in the development of a pragmatic and argued empirical point of view. \nThe 5 projects nominated for the TTI.5 Environmental Controversy Award\nOf the controversy study projects dealing with environmental issues\, the five projects with the highest rated papers\, reflecting depth of analysis\, are: \n\n« Betteraves\, oiseaux et néonicotinoïdes » [Beets\, birds and neonicotinoids] by Sylvain Caillaud\, Arsène Ferrière\, Grégoire Michel\, Léopold Moeneclaey\, Aymeric Plessier\, Joseph Redaud\, Victoire Rossignol and Maud Roux-Salembien \n« La réforme de l’assurance des récoltes en France. Quels enjeux et débats autour de la loi du 22 mars 2022 ? » [The reform of crop insurance in France. What are the issues and debates surrounding the March 22\, 2022 law?] by Damien Caperaa\, Jean Catry\, Jean Baptiste Flieller\, Pierre Frode\, Loïc Fouquet\, Corentin Hennion\, Thomas Labro and Lucille Lacoste \n« Le déclin des insectes\, une réalité inquiétante ? » [The decline of insects\, a concerning reality?] by Jorge Luis Ardila Villabona\, Jeremy Costanzo\, Candice Courbière\, Antoine Gauchot\, Jeanne-Marie Hays\, Sophie Laperrouze\, Stephen Piet and Léo Simplet \n« L’éolien en mer : atout essentiel de la transition énergétique ou nuisance inutile ? » [Offshore wind power: an essential asset for the energy transition or an unnecessary nuisance?] by Matthias Avice\, Cynthia Balech\, Maëlle Baronnet\, Myrtille David\, Shuyu Ding\, Xinbei Jang\, Louis Pont and Matthieu Suire \n« L’exploitation minière sous-marine\, une nécessité pour la transition ou un désastre écologique à venir ? » [Undersea mining\, a necessity for transition or an ecological disaster in the making?] by Youmna Bahout\, Timothée Blondel\, Théophile Candela\, Alice Dagicour\, Quentin Guitet\, Marine Papet\, Maïlys Quilhot and Léa Trin \nJoin us on May 31st for the award ceremony
