SUMMARY:Workshop “Forms of Economic Modeling and Public Action in the Era of Climate Change”
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n \n\nOrganized by Sara Aguiton (CNRS\, CAK)\, Ian Gray (Columbia Climate School) and Alexandre Violle (CSI-i3\, Mines Paris – PSL)\, \nthe workshop will be held at Mines Paris – PSL\, 60 bd Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris\, Conference room L312. \nThe event is open upon registration (subject to availability). \nRegistration: please fill out this form \nDownload the programme\nContact: Alexandre Violle \n\n\n\n\nSixteen years after French historian of science Amy Dahan’s book Les modèles du futur\, what new analytical challenges do the social sciences face in understanding the role of modeling and use of environmental scenarios in economic expertise and public action? As climate change worsens\, economic expertise is increasingly mobilized in a variety of public action fields to act in situations of uncertainty. By way of illustration\, the authorities responsible for regulating the financial sector\, like central banks\, are now developing new scenarios to integrate the issue of climate change into the risk calculations of banks and insurance companies\, in order to encourage them to finance decarbonized activities and protect themselves against climate damages. In an entirely different example\, at the convergence of geology and clean energy\, the issue of relocating strategic extractive activities in Europe raises the question of how to model future supply and demand for rare earth minerals\, and match these forecasts with current estimates of subterranean reserves. \nWith the development of public actions based on models or scenarios\, interdisciplinary communities of experts are constantly emerging and expanding to take on the novel economic problems posed by environmental issues. This phenomenon raises new theoretical questions: How do communities of experts interact to make interdisciplinary models work? \n\n\n\nWhat are the institutional conditions that facilitate the production of new\, hybrid forms of scientific knowledge? How\, despite uncertainties\, are new forms of public action co-produced by the development of models and scenarios? And how do expert communities both problematize and communicate these uncertainties to decision makers? \nThis workshop will bring together academics and stakeholders in modeling and public action to reflect on how modeling and scenario development shape\, accompany or prescribe different forms of public action. The theoretical questions developed invoke a number of empirical questions\, including but not limited to: How are models made? How do they hybridize different types of scientific (economic\, climate) knowledge in practical forms of action? Given the significant costs involved in creating and maintaining complex models\, what kind of path dependency do modeling practices generate? What perspectives of alternative forms of modeling do these path dependencies open and close? What do models reveal/understand\, and what do they leave in the shadows? What futures are inscribed in the models? For which audiences are these futures intended? How do models relate to forms of deliberation\, decision-making or other instruments of public action? \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:TTI.5 Environmental Controversy Award – 2nd Edition
DESCRIPTION:Best case study of an environmental controversy \nfrom the course Description of controversies \n  \n\nMay 28\, 2024 at 5:30 pm \nMines Paris – PSL\, 60 Boulevard Saint-Michel\, 75006 Paris \nAmphithéâtre Poincaré \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Transition Institute 1.5 launches its second edition of the TTI.5 Award for best study of an environmental controversy. The prize is awarded to the best case study of a controversy dealing with an environmental issue\, selected among the papers written by students of the civil engineering program of Mines Paris–PSL. These controversy studies are carried out as part of the course Description of Controversies coordinated by Madeleine Akrich\, sociologist and Research Director at the Center for the Sociology of Innovation (CSI). \n\n\nThe prize will be awarded at the 2nd TTI.5 Workshop to the best study project\, following a presentation of the three nominated projects\, all of which received the highest ratings\, reflecting the depth of the analysis. \nRegistration for the 2nd TTI.5 Workshop is compulsory\, please use this link. The event is open only to École des Mines staff and students (researchers\, teachers\, PhD students\, etc.). Download the full program. \n \n  \nControversy description projects at Mines Paris – PSL\nThe course Description of Controversies is part of the curriculum for third-year students in the Civil Engineering program at Mines Paris-PSL. This course aims to educate engineering students about the evolution of their professional and civic context. The aim is to introduce them to the uncertain world of scientific and technical research by describing an object: a socio-technical controversy. \nThe topics proposed to the students have the following characteristics: an ongoing controversy\, on a targeted subject (for example: not “GMOs” but “the problems raised by the authorization of the cultivation of a transgenic potato plant which is controversial in a specific period and in a specific territory”)\, involving a diversity of protagonists (scientists\, experts\, jurists\, institutions\, members of parliament\, associations\, etc.)\, for which various sources of information are available (general press\, scientific press\, professional press\, discussion forums\, blogs\, websites\, parliamentary reports\, etc.). \nThe controversy study consists in a case study. A group of students follows a controversy in real time to discover its complexity and singularity. A team of sociologists specializing in the analysis of science and technology supervise the students in the development of a pragmatic and argued empirical point of view. \nThe three projects nominated\nThe three projects nominated TTI.5 Award for best study of an environmental controversy are: \n« Vivre avec le loup ? Une cohabitation est-elle possible ? » [Living with wolves? Is a cohabitation possible?]\nMarie-Louise COMMUNAL\, Aude GOUNELLE and Adrien MIGNOT will present the group’s work. When a national environmental cause gets involved in local development]\nAlexa BRUNEAUX\, Pauline DELARUE\, Matthieu ROYER DE VÉRICOURT and Gabrielle VERNET will present the group’s work. » [Reuse of treated wastewater: What role can REUT play in a context of growing water stress?]\nElise LEI\, Raphaël GARDIES and Quentin SCHMUTZ will present the group’s work. \n

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Claire Flécher\, Institut d’études du travail de Lyon (IETL)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nClaire Flécher\nInstitut d’études du travail de Lyon (IETL)\, Centre Max Weber\, Université Lumière Lyon-2 \n  \nto discuss her book \nA bord des géants des mers \nEthnographie embarquée de la logistique globalisée \n  \n\n\n\n  \nIntroduction to the discussion by Guillaume Louvet \nBack cover: Alors que plus de 90 % du volume de marchandises produites dans le monde transitent chaque année par la mer\, le transport maritime demeure un univers largement méconnu. \nAlthough over 90% of the volume of goods produced in the world transits by sea every year\, maritime transport remains a virtually unknown world. How is this flow of goods organized? What actually goes on on-board these merchant ships\, giants of globalization? Who works on board\, how\, and at what cost?\nBased on an ethnographic study\, this book provides a behind-the-scenes look at how the goods we consume are transported\, and an insight into globalized labor “from below”. While the profound transformations that have affected the sector in recent years have led to extreme rationalization\, driven by market logic\, the very essence of seafaring life seems to have shrunk away. In this closed world of globalization\, the work collective has to meet contradictory injunctions: to ensure safety for all while transporting more goods in a continuous flow\, and to guarantee forms of solidarity despite inequalities in status and remuneration. Depending on the situation\, class\, race and gender identities arise and dissolve\, yet without calling social hierarchies into question – social peace on board is at stake. \nClaire Flécher\, A bord des géants des mers. SUMMARY:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” and the Centre Alexandre Koyré (CAK) welcome
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” and the Centre Alexandre Koyré (CAK) welcome \n  \nIan Gray \nPostdoctoral Researcher at Columbia University’s Climate School \nand Leigh Johnson \nAssociate Professor\, Environmental Studies\, Geography\, College of Arts and Sciences\, University of Oregon \n  \nAdaptation to climate change \n  \nHow do the impacts of climat change transform the economy? Co-organised with Sara Angeli Aguiton (Centre Alexandre Koyré – CAK)\, this session will investigate the forms of knowledge\, labour\, and human-nature relations that emerge in the face of the imperative of adaptation to climate change. \n  \nIan Gray (Columbia University’s Climate School) (en visioconférence) \nCultures of Anticipation: Material practices\, public authority\, and governing water scarcity in the Southwest of France \nAs climate change begins to alter local ecosystems around the globe\, communities and businesses who depend on these ecosystems find themselves renegotiating how climate-compromised natural resources should be protected and distributed\, to whom\, and at what cost. The Garonne River\, in southwestern France\, is an example of one such site of renegotiation. Following a state-run participatory planning exercise in 2010-2012\, regional stakeholder groups are largely in agreement that climate change seriously challenges current modes of water use. They are not in agreement\, however\, about what should be done about this. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork\, this paper uses this example of stakeholder-led adaptation to probe larger questions of what adaptation means in the context of divergent and competing human relationships to the natural world. I pay particular attention to how irrigation-intensive farmers come to articulate the problem of climate change in light of their economic dependencies on water\, and develop a set of “anticipatory practices” designed to address moments of increasing water scarcity. Besides anticipating increasing resource constraints\, this culture of anticipation\, also anticipates political opposition against ongoing modes of export-oriented industrial agricultural by suggesting that farmers are “doing their part” by enhancing more efficient water use. Merging concerns from economic sociology about the regulation of common pool goods with an STS approach to cultures of knowledge\, this paper contributes to enlarging understandings of how socio-material practices of adaptation cannot evenly distribute future climate impacts\, because actors\, even within the same territory\, are unevenly affected by these impacts \n  \nLeigh Johnson (College of Arts and Sciences\, University of Oregon) \nJustice and the invisible labor of climate adaptation \nThough the politics and burdens of climate change adaptation feature prominently in debates about climate justice\, scholars have rarely conceptualized adaptation as work conducted by laboring people. Yet contemporary adaptation programming hinges upon the deployment of a remarkable amount of labor\, much of it unpaid\, underpaid\, or unfree. This talk interrogates the invisibility of this labor force\, reading across an archive of adaptation projects funded by multilateral aid agencies in the last decade. Participants manually labor on a wide variety of landscape-level projects of ecological repair and care\, performing activities from building irrigation channels\, to planting mangrove forests\, to invasive species removal\, to managing community grazing reserves. I excavate the discursive premises that obscure and devalue participants’ labor: aid as gift; participants’ time as unproductive or surplus; volunteerism as evidence of deservingness; and nature as adaptive agent. From these premises flow problematic assumptions of benefit\, participation\, contribution\, and stewardship\, with enormous material consequences for how and by whom labor is performed. In recognition of the structural relation between paid and unpaid work\, the gendering of unwaged socioecological reproductive care work\, and the legacy of historical ecological debt\, I propose a reframing of climate adaptation labor as essential work. This requires jettisoning inherited notions of “donors”\, “beneficiaries”\, and “aid” itself\, reconceptualizing adaptation labor as an opportunity for redistribution and collective world-making \n  \n\n\n\n  \nIan Gray is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Columbia University’s Climate School. He studies the different ways that communities\, organizations\, and governments are adapting to climate change. He is particularly interested in political dynamics that emerge as experts in different economic and administrative domains bring knowledge about future climate risks into present day decision-making\, and how subsequent policies and practices shape the social distribution of climate impacts. In his current book project\, Making Climate Knowledge Actionable: Adaptation and the Politics of Protection on a Warming Planet\, he analyzes the interaction of expert credibility\, economic imperatives\, regulatory capacity\, and social contestation\, in the construction of adaptive practices. \nLeigh Johnson is Associate Professor\, Environmental Studies\, Geography\, College of Arts and Sciences\, University of Oregon. She is a human geographer focusing on the intersection of disaster and climate risk\, vulnerability\, finance\, and labor. She investigates how different configurations of public and private sector actors and financing arrangements influence livelihoods\, vulnerability\, and wellbeing. A second element of her research program focuses on climate change “adaptation labor”: the (often under/unpaid and undervalued) work of modifying and repairing socioecological systems to bear the brunt of climatic changes.  She is interested in how this labor is organized\, valued\, distributed\, and governed across global development institutions and NGO actors. A related project centers on understanding the growth and labor sourcing dynamics of crowdfunding platforms for ecological restoration.  A third focus is on carceral forest firefighting labor in the U.S. West\, exploring how Western states are mobilizing incarcerated labor for fire suppression amidst unprecedented fire regimes and labor shortages. \n  \nInformation and registration\n\n\n\nDate: Friday\, May 17\, 2024\, 3mp-5pm \nVenue: Mines Paris-PSL\, 60 boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris. SUMMARY:Kelly Bronson University of Ottawa is the guest at a seminar organized as part of her stay at the CSI
DESCRIPTION:Kelly Bronson \nUniversity of Ottawa \n  \nis the guest at a seminar organized as part of her stay at the CSI \n  \non May 2\, 2024 from 2:30 to 4 pm \nat Mines Paris – PSL\, 60 bd Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris \n  \nImmaculate conception of data: \nagribusiness\, activists and their shared politics of the future \n  \nConception immaculée des données: agribusiness\, activistes et leur politique commune de l’avenir \n\n\n\nOutline: I bring a sociological and STS lens to analysis of large agricultural firms who used to supply farmers tractors\, chemicals and seeds but who now trade in big data and AI. \nIn this talk\, I will draw from an ethnographic book project to develop a closely observed account of scientists and farmers working across a variety of domains – from private labs to farm fields to activist technology-building workshops. I will use stories to describe what is being done with agricultural big data and AI by those hoping to innovate food production. In addition to thickly describing data practices\, I will detail the magical qualities that people are investing in AI systems\, ultimately exploring what happens to environmental and food justice when emergent technologies get caught up in pre-existing arrangements of power and historic habits of thought and speech. \n \nKelly Bronson is the Canada Research Chair in Science and Society\, a Faculty member at the Centre for Law\, Technology\, and Society\, and an Associate Professor within the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa. SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Charlotte Brives
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nCharlotte Brives \n  \nCNRS Research Fellow\, Centre Émile Durkheim\, Bordeaux II University \n  \nto discuss her book \nFace à l’antibiorésistance \nUne écologie politique des microbes \n  \n\n\n\n  \nIntroduction to the discussion by Allyson Pallisser \nBack cover: La résistance bactérienne aux antibiotiques constitue l’un des défis majeurs de la santé publique au XXIe siècle. \nBacterial resistance to antibiotics is one of the major public health challenges of the 21st century. But how can it be combated? Phage therapy appears to be a possible answer. This little-known\, yet centuries-old practice involves using certain properties of bacteriophage viruses\, “bacteria eaters”\, to treat bacterial infections. Charlotte Brives brilliantly outlines their history\, difficulties and potential: from patients seeking to treat chronic infections to collectives attempting to establish new regulatory frameworks\, from laboratory research to the setting up of clinical trials\, she brings to light the complexity and variety of the relationships between humans\, phages and bacteria. It’s no longer a question of controlling and mastering microbes\, but of dealing with them. Phage-therapy respects the ecosystems devastated by the forms of production and exploitation of living beings made possible by antibiotics. It’s by no means a miracle cure\, but it could preserve the chemical molecules that are still effective\, while making them accessible to as many people as possible. \nCharlotte Brives\, Face à l’antibiorésistance. SUMMARY:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes Klaudia Prodani et Mathilde Salin
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes \n  \nKlaudia Prodani \nDepartment of Science\, Technology and Policy Studies\, University of Twente\, The Netherlands \nand Mathilde Salin \nCIRED\, AgroParisTech\, Université Paris-Saclay\, France \n  \nModèles et biodiversité \n  \nIn recent years\, attempts to take biodiversity into account in economic and financial calculations have intensified. We will explore the issues\, challenges and limits of this economic and financial translation of biodiversity\, through a combination of practical approaches and critical analysis of models. \n  \nThe role of models in rendering biodiversity loss a systemic financial risk \nKlaudia Prodani (University of Twente\, Department of Science\, Technology and Policy Studies\, Knowledge\, Transformation & Society – KiTeS) \nThis presentation will offer some preliminary reflections on the ways in which assemblages of biodiversity\, economic\, and financial models inform and constrain the rendering of biodiversity loss into a systemic financial risk by so-called “progressive” central banks. It will discuss how and why such models can be deemed performative by reviewing some landmark attempts to project possible financial losses arising from biodiversity-related physical and transition risks. \n  \nAssessing Integrated Assessment Models for building global nature-economy scenarios \nMathilde Salin (CIRED\, AgroParisTech\, Université Paris-Saclay) \nThis presentation will review global integrated assessment models (IAMs) linking “nature” (including “biodiversity”\, “natural capital”\, or “ecosystem services”) and the macroeconomy and assess their suitability to help build scenarios to explore the economic consequences of nature loss and transition policies. Based on an in-depth analysis of two types of IAMs (‘stylised’ and ‘applied’)\, it will critically assess how they represent dependencies of the macroeconomy on nature\, as well as policies to reverse nature loss. It will show that applied IAMs are generally skewed to capturing the dependency of the economy to selected provisioning ecosystem services\, with regulating and maintenance services less represented. As these models tend to focus on the land-use and climate drivers of biodiversity loss\, the transition policies they capture only aim to mitigate those drivers and overlook other drivers of nature loss such as pollution or invasive alien species. I will also show that some theoretical assumptions in the core macroeconomic part of ‘applied’ models may tend to mitigate the potential macroeconomic consequences of nature loss and nature transition policies. This contrasts with the results of the ‘stylised’ models reviewed\, which tend to represent the loss of natural capital and biodiversity as having significant impacts on the macroeconomy. However\, by contrast with applied models\, stylised models make it harder to represent the impact of the loss of specific ecosystem services or specific policies to protect nature. Building on this analysis\, the presentation will explore challenges and future avenues for the use of IAMs to develop scenarios that account for the importance of nature and biodiversity for human economic activity. \n  \n\n\n\n  \nKlaudia Prodani is a PhD candidate at the Department of Science\, Technology and Policy Studies of the University of Twente. Her research interest focus on the performativity of biodiversity models in sustainable finance. \nMathilde Salin is a PhD candidate in Economics at the Centre for International Research on Environment and Development (CIRED) of AgroParisTech\, Paris-Saclay University. Specialized in environmental economics and prospective modeling\, her research focuses on the macro-financial consequences of economic transformations linked to biodiversity protection\, and in particular on the levers of action of central banks for attenuating transition risks. \n  \nInformation and registration\n\n\n\nDate: Friday March 29\, 2024\, 11 am -1 pm \nVenue: Mines Paris-PSL\, 60 boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris. SUMMARY:Study days: "Renovating for transition"
DESCRIPTION:Although building renovation policy is widely recognized as an important factor in the fight against climate change\, the modalities of its deployment divide the actors involved\, give ride to the news entities\, and provoke unexpected effects and controversy\, both in the design of the instruments and in their implementation. \nTechnical and commercial innovation continue to play an important role in this field\, though other challenges have become more pressing\, notably: the overall effectiveness of energy renovation inivatives (implementation of “complete renovations” as opposed to “single-action work”)\, the need to enhance the skills and coordination of the multitude of smart craft businesses involved in these projects\, and the ability to support households in defining and managing complex services. the renovation sector is not a single market\, it rather provides\, as a result of the way in  wich renovation policies are deployed\, a ground for multiple markets arrangements. \nThe objective of these day is to adress these issues through the lens of market recomposition. The aim is to encourage encounters and exchanges between social science research currently being carried out on the topic of renovation from a variety of approaches: through the market\, organizations\, work\, public policies\, space\, consumption\, etc. \nThe event will be held in French \nDownload Rénover pour la transition_Programme_21-22 mars2024  \nDetails and registration: \nDate: Thursday 21 and Friday 22 March\, 2024 \nVenue: École des mines de Paris\, 60 bd Saint Michel –  75006 Paris. SUMMARY:Le séminaire « Expertises économiques et actions environnementales » accueille Magdalena Kuchler et Bård Lahn
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes \n  \nMagdalena Kuchler \nDepartment of Earth Sciences\, Uppsala University\, Sweden. \nand Bård Lahn \nCentre for Technology\, Innovation and Culture (TIK)\, University of Oslo\, \nand Center for International Climate Research (CICERO)\, Norway \n  \nUnderground futures \n  \nThis session explores the entanglements of forecasting\, planning\, and economic calculation around underground resources\, whether exploited or yet-to-be exploited. This session is organized in collaboration with the Programme Ciblé “Anticip” of the PEPR Sous-sol Bien Commun (Underground Common Good). \nMagdalena Kuchler (Department of Earth Sciences\, Uppsala University\, Sweden) \nSpeculating on shale: Resource-making and the ‘politics of possibility’ in Poland and the UK \nThis paper focuses on the speculative character of knowledge and action in relation to subterranean resources\, drawing on the curtailed histories of shale gas development in Poland and the UK. It adopts a political-economic orientation towards speculation rather than a narrowly financial one\, seeking to understand the ‘politics of possibility’ associated with speculative resources. Specifically\, we build on work in political geography to understand speculation as a form of productive ‘resonance’ replicating across epistemic\, economic\, and political domains. Thinking of speculation as resonance – as synchronous vibration across different areas of social life\, stimulated by and intensifying uncertainty – offers a novel way of thinking about the possibilities of subterranean resources for forging political alignments. We show how speculation was integral to demonstrating the resource potential of shale in both Poland and the UK\, and consider how this speculative character of shale subsequently infiltrated into economic and policy realms. Resonating across these domains\, and amplifying epistemic uncertainties about shale\, speculation produced a politics of possibility orientated towards ‘gambling’ on potential outcomes. By taking seriously the political possibilities of the uncertainties attached to subterranean resources\, we extend the value of speculation as a concept for analysing the constitutive role of uncertainty in political-economic governance. \n  \nBård Lahn (TIK Centre for Technology\, Innovation and Culture\, University of d’Oslo) \nQuantifying the oil economy: Unknown geological resources as future revenue \nFossil fuels stored in geological reservoirs are usually not directly observable\, and their extent or even existence is often fundamentally uncertain. Yet extraction-based economies rely on quantifying their value and bring them into their accounting practices. This talk will focus on how the Norwegian government brought the country’s oil resources into its machineries of economic planning. Geological surveys\, market forecasts and economic technologies such as discounting all played important roles in making ‘the oil asset’ a known and governable entity – even if the oil itself was yet to be discovered. This in turn affected how the oil resources were managed and ultimately extracted. On this basis\, the talk will explore how geological resource-making is entangled with practices of economic planning and valuation. \n \n  \nMagdalena Kuchler is a Senior Lecturer in Global Energy Systems and Associate Professor (Docent) in the Research Programme Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (NRHU) at the Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University. Her research \, at the intersection of environmental and political science\, aims to unravel and scrutinize emerging energy futures\, imaginaries and narratives underpinning global and regional low-carbon transitions. Her main research interests include energy security\, transition and governance; fossil fuel discourses and materialities; unconventional energy sources; critical materials\, sustainable resources governance and resource-making; as well as climate-energy nexus and climate change governance. \nBård Lahn is a postoctoral research fellow at the University of Oslo’s Centre for Technology\, Innovation and Culture (TIK)\, and an affiliated researcher at CICERO Centre for International Climate Research. With a background in Science and Technology Studies (STS)\, he researches climate politics in Norway and at the international level. His main research interests include the role of scientific expertise in climate policymaking\, the relationship between fossil fuel production and climate policy\, and the North/South dimensions of climate justice. He has also worked with a number of NGOs and activist networks on climate justice\, fossil fuel extraction and other environmental issues. \nDate: Friday\, March 1\, 2024\, 11am-1pm \nVenue: Mines Paris-PSL\, 60 boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris. SUMMARY:The Chair in Corporate Theory is pleased to invite you to the ERC seminar session
DESCRIPTION:Business\, Responsibility and Civilisation” seminar \nThe Chair in Corporate Theory is pleased to invite you to the next session of the seminar \n“Enterprise\, Responsibility and Civilisation \nThursday 1 February 2024 – 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm \nMines Paris – PSL Université \n60 Boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 PARIS \n\nHelena Lopes \, Professor at the University Institute of Lisbon\, \nand Christophe Clerc\, Lawyer and lecturer at Sciences Po\, \nwill present their book \n“Political Economy of the Company – Authority\, Governance and Democracy \nAuthority\, Governance and Economic Democracy”. \n  \nHelena Lopes is a professor at Iscte – Lisbon University Institute. She has directed and participated in several projects funded by the European Union’s Framework Programmes. \nChristophe Clerc is a lawyer and lecturer at Sciences Po. He is an expert in corporate governance at the European Commission. \nPresentation of the session: Companies are defined as collective economic projects organised by political processes. The book argues that any collective action/activity requires the existence of managerial authority\, defined as a form of non-coercive power that only exists if it is accepted. This authority is accepted insofar as its function is to facilitate cooperation between people with divergent interests\, a cooperation which must be mutually beneficial. The workers\, without whose consent the authority does not exist\, must therefore be considered as actors in the company and not as passive subjects of capital. \nERC Seminar Helena Lopes and Christophe Clerc

SUMMARY:The CSI Guest Seminar will welcome Michèle Dupré and Jean-Christophe Le Coze
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nMichèle Dupré \nLabour sociologist\, Researcher at the Centre Max Weber – UMR 283 \nand Jean-Christophe Le Coze \nResearch Director at the French national institute for industrial environment and risks | INERIS · Accidental Risk Division Department \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nntroduction to the discussion by Hafid Ait Sidi Hammou \nBack cover: Les accidents industriels majeurs sont rares\, mais ils affectent leur environnement naturel et social comme nous l’ont rappelé la catastrophe d’AZF à Toulouse en 2001 et l’incendie de l’usine Lubrizol à Rouen en septembre 2019. \nPlants\, materials and people. Industrial safety in the chemical industry \nMajor industrial accidents are rare\, but they do affect their natural and social environment\, as we were reminded by the the AZF disaster in Toulouse in 2001 and the fire at the Lubrizol plant in Rouen in September 2019. Many actors\, both internal and external to companies\, are involved in the prevention of these risks. This book details the results of an immersion survey of five companies in the specialty chemicals industry. This approach to the daily life of these high-hazard companies is unprecedented\, not only in the academic world\, but also in other spheres of society. Through their descriptive and ethnographic approach\, the two authors aim to provide an understanding of the complexity\, both social and technical\, of these industrial companies. The prevention of major industrial hazards is a difficult topic that may be addressed in a variety of ways. Taking an approach at the crossroads of the sociology of work\, employment and activity and the sociology of risk systems provides an original reading of this activity shaped by the interaction of numerous company-internal and external actors. In a perspective of public sociology\, the two authors have set out to make the reading accessible to all. \n \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. SUMMARY:Reflection on the Materiality of Transition – 8th session of the Webinar TTI.5
DESCRIPTION:Reflection on the Materiality of Transition – 8th session of the Webinar TTI.5\nThis 8th session of the Webinar TTI.5 will be held online on Friday\, January 19\, 2024\, from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM. The session will be held in French. \nThe extraction\, importation\, and transformation of raw materials play a crucial role in the low-carbon transition. Emerging technologies such as renewable energy\, electric vehicles\, and energy storage devices rely on so-called rare metals\, such as lithium and cobalt. \nHowever\, the use of these resources can lead to environmental problems\, mining-related conflicts\, challenging working conditions\, and inequalities in access to the benefits of the transition. The geopolitical balance is disrupted. \nThus\, the responsible management of raw materials becomes a crucial issue to ensure an environmentally sustainable and socially equitable transition. \nProgram\nTo discuss all these topics\, three specialists are announced among the speakers : \nDamien GOETZ | Professor-Researcher at GEOSCIENCES Mines Paris – PSL\nMineral resources specialist – with expertise in extraction methods\, economic assessment of development\, and availability for economic and industrial growth – Damien GOETZ is a teaching researcher at GEOSCIENCES. He is in charge of the Mineral Resources option for transitions in the education of engineers at Mines Paris – PSL. \nBrice LAURENT | Researcher at CSI Mines Paris – PSL\nResearcher at the Center for the Sociology of Innovation (CSI)\, Brice LAURENT also serves as the director of the Social Sciences\, Economy\, and Society Directorate at the French Agency for Food\, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES). His research focuses on the relationships between science and democracy\, investigated through surveys conducted in places involved in the promotion\, regulation\, or contestation of innovation. His current work includes inquiries into experimental forms of innovation and research projects addressing political issues related to subsurface resources. \nFarah BENRAMDANE | Phd Student at theUniversity Bordeaux-Montaigne\nFarah BENRAMDAME has been working on a thesis since 2021 within the École doctorale Montaigne – Humanités in partnership with the unité de recherche Cultures et Littératures des Mondes Anglophones (CLIMAS). Her thesis focuses on « Conflits miniers et territoire “cédés” : la remise en cause systématique de la souveraineté amérindienne aux Etats-Unis »and is under the supervision of Lionel LARRE\, President of the University Bordeaux-Montaigne and professor of American civilization. \nIf you wish to attend\, please connect at 1:30 pm via zoom\, the link will be communicated on this page. \nTTI.5 team contact: tti.5@minesparis.psl.eu \nLearn more about webinars TTI.5

SUMMARY:Seminar series on Economic expertise and environmental actions
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes \n  \nKamilla Karhunmaa \nUniversity of Helsinki and SPIRAL\, University of Liège \net Céline Granjou \nLESSEM-INRAE \nCarbon offsetting \n  \nThis session explores the ways in which carbon offsetting mobilizes arguments and expertise from soil science\, economics and other fields to produce new entities and recast the way existing objects such as soils tend to be understood. \nKamilla Karhunmaa \nFrom charity to crime to commodity: settling the economic form of carbon offsetting in Finland \nWhile economics seems to be everywhere\, particularly in market-based environmental policy instruments\, this presentation discusses the support that economics and economists gather from other fields to be convincing. I present the case of Compensate\, a seller of carbon offsets in Finland\, which raised a public discussion\, criminal case\, and legal reform on the status of carbon offsetting in Finland. Following Compensate’s trajectory shows how the tangibility\, reciprocity and remunerative capacity of carbon offsets is questioned. Further\, the case demonstrates how the economic form of carbon offsetting requires significant institutional support to be formalized and even then\, results only in a temporary stabilization. \nCéline Granjou \nThe promises of soil carbon sequestration : unpacking the politics of carbon quantification \nThe Paris Agreement reached at the COP 21 in 2015 signal the new centrality of carbon sinks\, including soils\, as a key means of enabling climate stability. Holding three times as much carbon as the atmosphere\, soil is considered the largest terrestrial reservoir of carbon that we could manage and enhance. How does the rising promotion of soil as carbon sink in climate policies reconfigure the way in which we come to know and manage soils ? \nI will first introduce the ANR-funded POSCA project : its team is completing a vast sociological investigation both into soil sciences academia and on-the-ground organizations of soil improvement and management. On the basis of that field-work\, we observe a contestable\, and contested\, quest for measuring and quantifying soil carbon stocks and fluxes\, that tends to recast soils as reservoirs of carbon that we could measure\, model\, map and optimize both at global and local scales. Ways of knowing and managing soils tend to be polarized by a double focus on carbon (i.e. a movement of carbonization) and on measuring (i.e. a quest for quantification). The politics of carbon quantification entail a number of practical and political issues\, as accounting for soil carbon takes precedence over securing soils as complex\, evolving and vulnerable entities for the future. \n \n\n  \nKamilla Karhunmaa is apostdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki\, and a scientific collaborator with the SPIRAL research center at the University of Liège. Her current research\, developed as part of the Climakedo project at the University of Helsinki\, focuses on the knowledge policies and practices underpinning voluntary carbon offsets in northern countries\, using an approach at the crossroads of science and technology studies (STS) and environmental policy. \nCéline Granjou is Director of Research in sociology at the EcoSystèmes et Sociétés en Montagne Laboratory (LESSEM-INRAE) at Grenoble-Alpes University. Her research lies at the crossroads between the sociology of science and technology and the sociology of the environment. She is currently part of the interdisciplinary team in sociology and soil sciences of the POSCA project – The Promises of Soil Carbon Sequestration Knowledge\, aiming to studying how the promotion of soil as Carbon sink in climate policies reconfigures the ways in which we know and manage soils\, at the level of soil carbon science (agendas\, research infrastructures)\, of its regulation (standardization and standardization of methods for evaluating and measuring soil carbon)\, and its management (strategies for optimizing carbon stocks and their effects on agricultural and forestry activities and sectors). \nate: Friday\, January 19\, 2024\, 11am-1pm \nVenue: Mines Paris-PSL\, 60 boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris. SUMMARY:HDR defense of Thomas Beauvisage Digital sociologist\, researcher in Orange's SENSE department
DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Sociology of Innovation (i3\, UMR CNRS 9217\, Mines Paris-PSL) has the pleasure of inviting you to attend the HDR (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches) in STS (Sciences\, Technologies\, Societies) defense of \nThomas Beauvisage \nSociologist of digital technology\, Senior Researcher at Orange’s department Sociology and Economics of Networks and Services (SENSE) \n  \nMonday\, December 18\, 2023\, 2pm to 5:30pm \nat Mines Paris-PSL\, 60 bd. Saint-Michel\, Paris\, amphitheater L108 B \n  \n  \nOriginal dissertation title \nSociologie du cookie publicitaire \n[Sociology of advertising cookie] \n  \nAbstract: For a quarter of a century\, the cookie has been the keystone of online advertising. This simple mechanism enabling websites to store information about web users\, has been quickly captured by the advertising industry\, which has built its market infrastructure around it. This dissertation describes this capture by drawing on the cross-disciplinary contributions of the sociology of markets and the sociology of innovation\, as well as Science and Technology Studies. It offers a description of the online advertising market through its key infrastructure\, the cookie. To do so\, it describes the trajectory of the cookie as a web innovation and as a market infrastructure for advertising\, and analyses the role it plays in the ordinary work of targeting consumers and valorizing advertising space. Finally\, it shows how the market dimension of the cookie has been coupled with a moral burden since the implementation of the RGPD in 2018. \nThis work contributes to three fields of the social sciences: science and technology studies\, by showing how actors seize the agency of technical devices to compose market arrangements; the sociology of markets\, through the description of a turn towards the individualization of the market relationship in the digital regime; and the field of big data studies\, by providing a series of empirical and situated observations\, accounting for the endogenous logics in the use of personal data. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe jury consists of:  \nFranck COCHOY\, Professor of sociology at the Interdisciplinary Solidarity\, Societies\, Territories Laboratory (LISST)\, University of Toulouse Jean-Jaurès. SUMMARY:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes Kristin Asdal and Tone Huse
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes \n  \nKristin Asdal and Tone Huse \n  \nto discuss their book \nNature-Made Economy \nCod\, Capital\, and the Great Economization of the Ocean \n  \nThis session will be an opportunity to discuss the just-published book Nature-Made Economy: Cod\, Capital\, and the Great Economization of the Ocean with its authors. The discussion will be introduced by Clément Foutrel\, (CSI) and Baptiste Parent (CIRED). \n  \n\n  \n“Nature-Made Economy” tells the story about the great economization of the ocean through the little tools and valuations that make this happen. By following the famous codfish around\, across policy documents\, at sites where prices are set\, qualities are valued\, and cod habits are sought disciplined\, it traces how nature acts upon economy and vice versa. Throughout this\, the book shows how different “versions of economization” materialize\, are grown and cared for\, but also fail\, sometimes quite spectacularly. \nKristin Asdal is Professor of STS at the TIK Centre for Technology\, University of Oslo. She is the coauthor\, with Hilde Reinertsen\, of Doing Document Analysis: A Practice-Oriented Method\, and coeditor of Humans\, Animals and Biopolitics: The More-Than-Human Condition\, Sage\, 2022. \nTone Huse is Associate Professor of STS in the Department of Archaeology\, History\, Religious Studies and Theology at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. She is the author of Everyday Life in the Gentrifying City: On Displacement\, Ethnic Privileging and the Right to Stay Put\, Routledge\, 2016. \nKristin Asdal and Tone Huse\, Nature-Made Economy: Cod\, Capital\, and the Great Economization of the Ocean\,The MIT Press\, 2023. \nInformation and registration\n\n\n\nThe session will also be streamed by videoconference. SUMMARY:Les séminaires polytechnique santé: Will health prevention be algorithmic?
DESCRIPTION:Seminar #4: Can the quest for “ageing well” benefit from algorithmic approaches based on massive data?\nStaying healthy and independent for as long as possible is a public health issue. Identifying bio-markers of aging\, and combining them with other lifestyle data\, seems a promising approach to meeting this objective. A better understanding of the biological and behavioral processes involved could lead to the implementation of preventive programs to avert dependency. The aim of this seminar is to take stock of a recent initiative in this field\, the Inspire program\, and to draw lessons for actions that could be carried out on a large scale. What do we know so far? What lessons can be drawn for prevention? \n \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Energy & Social sciences and Humanities
DESCRIPTION:Energy & Social sciences and Humanities \nObservatoire exploratoire des pratiques sociales liées à la crise énergétique (PROMETHEE) \nWednesday\, December 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. \nThe workshop will be in French \nRoom Van Straelen à la Société Géologique de France\n77 rue Claude Bernard dans le 5e à Paris\nA buffet will follow the presentations \nPlease register ( capacity limited to 80 people) by email:  muriel.bollengier@unicaen.fr \nDownload the flyer \nFirst findings of the project\nA year ago\, the CEA\, University of Caen/MRSH\, Mines Paris-PSL\, Dôme de Caen and IRTS Normandie-Caen launched an exploratory SHS observatory project on energy crises adptation practices (PROMETHEE). This half-day conference aims to present the first findings of the project. \nThe “involuntary collective sobriety” announced in France for winter 2022-2023 provided an opportunity for a discussion in the public arena of the various energy transition scenarios\, and revitalized the notion of sobriety. How are discourses encouraging the moderation of energy consumption perceived by civil society as a whole\, in a social and cultural context based on the idea of development and growth? And how is this call for sobriety put into practice? Finally\, isn’t “sobriety” – often understood as a mere “sacrifice” to consumption aimed at maintaining the techno-economic system – the key to individual and collective autonomy for a genuine energy transition that is both socio-technical and political? \nThis observatory has received financial support from Ademe.
