SUMMARY:Industrial Adventures Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Industrial Adventures Seminar | Tuesday\, December 2\, 2025 – 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.\nMines Paris (60\, boulevard Saint-Michel – Paris) | Remote participation possible \n \n\nWhen two brothers\, founders of a company manufacturing fence posts and panels\, pass it on to two brothers from the next generation\, everything seems to be in order. Despite tough operating conditions\, a shrinking market\, and increasingly unfair foreign competition\, the managerial ingenuity and humanism of the new leaders succeeded in transforming the company into a model of collective performance and resilience\, impressing observers and generating enthusiasm at the École de Paris. But after twenty years of struggle\, the brutal 50% contraction of their market since the start of the war in Ukraine made protection from the commercial court inevitable. Slimmed down but saved\, the company is resuming its development. This session will be an opportunity to reflect on the future of moderate value-added industry in France\, the unspoken aspects of business transfer\, and the mysteries of the bankruptcy ecosystem. \nTo learn more about the Lippi saga\, we invite you to read the reports from previous sessions: \nWrite a true story about the company \n“Lippi: Digital Transformation\, Season 2?” \n\n«Digital Revolution: A User’s Guide»\n« Lippi: Digital Transformation\, Season 2?»\n«Write a true story about the company”\n\nRegistration \nRegistration closes on Monday\, December 1\, 2025\, at 3:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Innovation Management Seminar
DESCRIPTION:  \nWe are pleased to invite you to the December session of the Innovation Management seminar: \n  \nInnovating for humanitarian work: \nthe case of the MSF Foundation \nby \nNicolas MOTTIS \nPresident of the MSF Foundation \nClara NORDON\nExecutive Director of the MSF Foundation \nWednesday\, December 10\, 2025\nfrom  8:45 am sharp to 10:45 am \nMines Paris – 60\, boulevard Saint-Michel\, 75006 Paris \nMédecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is now one of the largest international NGOs\, operating in dozens of countries and employing more than 60\,000 people. The needs encountered in its areas of intervention are immense\, and some raise questions that existing technological solutions do not yet address. The MSF Foundation is a modestly sized organization serving the field\, which acts on two complementary fronts: the development of innovations often based on cutting-edge technologies; and critical reflection by its think tank\, Crash\, which analyzes operational practices and leads sometimes sensitive debates on humanitarian issues. With a decade of experience behind it\, the Foundation is now seeing some of its projects enter the global deployment phase\, both within and outside MSF\, while many others remain at the exploratory stage. This session will illustrate an original model of innovation and discuss its main issues and challenges. \nRegistration \nFree registration–  Registration closes on Tuesday\, December 9\, 2025\, at 3:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:CERNA Research Seminar with Jeanne Astier (CREST - Polytechnique)\, Geoffrey Barrows (CREST - Polytechnique)\, Raphael Calel (Georgetown U)
DESCRIPTION:Quantifying Climate Damages When Regions Trade: A Structural Gravity Approach \n(joint with Jeanne Astier (CREST – Polytechnique)\, Geoffrey Barrows (CREST – Polytechnique)\, Raphael Calel (Georgetown U) \nThis paper presents a method for estimating treatment effects of local climate shocks when regions trade with each other. Because of spillovers induced by trade flows\, comparing the evolution of outcomes between pre-shock and post-shock periods in regions exposed versus unexposed to local shocks leads to a biased estimate of treatment effect. We model these across-region dependencies using standard assumptions from international trade theory. We use our model-consistent estimation strategy to revisit the literature on the evaluation of impacts from climate change onto country-sector gross output using year-to-year variation in temperature and counterfactual scenarios where the observed warming from 1991 to 2019 would not have occurred or considering future warming predictions. \nThere will be an opportunity to schedule individual meetings and/or join lunch/dinner with Hélène before the seminar. \nPlease enter your preferred time slot here.

SUMMARY:Arpentage & Ecriture. STS Reading Workshop #4
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 11\, 2025\, 2:00–6:00 p.m. \nUTC de Paris\, 62 Bd de Sébastopol\, 75003 Paris\nroom Barthès \n \n  \nRegistration: Please register here. \nTo receive updates\, subscribe to the “Arpentage et Écriture” newsletter here. \nThe workshop is held in French. \n  \nThe workshop aims to provide a welcoming space for young researchers of all disciplinary backgrounds who are interested in the study of science and technology in France. The workshop offers a forum for discussion based on group readings\, fundamental concept discussions\, and STS writing practices. \nThe workshop is organized around two primary activities: \nCollective Reading and Analysis (Exploration /Arpentage) \nMost sessions involve exploring a reference text or recent publication in the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS). This approach begins with dividing a book or collection of articles into equal parts to facilitate collective exploration. During the first part of the session\, participants read and take notes on different topics\, such as theoretical concepts and arguments\, links to their research\, empirical examples\, and questions or points of confusion. In the second part of the session\, these notes are shared to build a collective understanding and deepen the discussion around the text and key concepts in the field of STS. \nWriting in the Humanities and Social Sciences \nOne to two sessions per year are dedicated to discussing scientific writing practices: \n– Presenting research findings to respondents or peers.\n– Writing an ethnographic text and constructing a scientific narrative. \n  \nAtelier #4\nThis session\, organized in the form of an “Arpentage / Exploration”\, will be devoted to \nNotre nouvelle nature : Guide de terrain de l’Anthropocène\,\nAnna Lowenhaupt Tsing\, Jennifer Deger\, Alder Keleman Saxena \net Feifei Zhou\, Seuil\, 2025. \n \n \nSeminar Details\nThe seminar details are as follows (they will also be sent to participants by email):\n– In-person in Paris at different locations to discover each other’s laboratories and universities\n– Half-day sessions (four hours\, including a snack break)\n– Two types of sessions: Reading Workshop: Theory\, Concepts\, Methodology and Writing Workshop: Analysis\, Writing\, Fieldwork\n– No work is required beforehand. Reading is done on site collectively using methods such as arpentage\, which explains the extended duration of the sessions.\n– A friendly atmosphere: we suggest sharing a meal after each session. \nWorkshop Organizers and Facilitators\nAurélien Béranger – Doctorant\, Laboratoire Costech\, Université de Technologie de Compiègne.\nEmail : aurelien.beranger@utc.fr \nAlexia Pronesti – Doctorante\, GSPR & Cermes3\, EHESS.\nEmail : alexia.pronesti@ehess.fr \nSolène Sarnowski – Doctorante\, Centre de Sociologie de l’Innovation (CSI)\, Mines Paris & Télécom-Paris\, Institut Polytechnique de Paris\, NOS.\nEmail : solene.sarnowski@minesparis.psl.eu \nDorian Groll – Doctorant\, Centre Maurice Halbwachs\, CAK.\nEmail : dorian.groll@ens.psl.eu \nSeminar program\nLearn more about the 2025-2026 Program for the seminar ‘Arpentage & Écriture: STS Reading Workshop’. \n

SUMMARY:Séminaire « Entreprises\, Responsabilités et Civilisations »
DESCRIPTION:  \nLa Chaire Théorie de l’Entreprise a le plaisir de vous inviter à la prochaine séance du séminaire « Entreprises\, Responsabilités et Civilisations »  \n  \n le 11 décembre 2025 \n  \n de 16h à 18h00 \n(version hybride) \nTaming Unicorns: Toward a New Normal of Responsible Entrepreneurship  \nwith Matthew Grimes  \nà \nMines Paris – PSL \n60 Boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 PARIS \nInscription \nAbstract: \nWhile entrepreneurial disruption has proven a source of abundance by way of reforming markets and legacy institutions\, it is also frequently characterized by the displacement of existing professions\, industries\, and livelihoods among other societal and ecological externalities. Prior research has often assumed that such reform and externalities are inevitable and inseparable aspects of entrepreneurial disruption. In this presentation\, however\, I will discuss the institutional foundations which have led to the current configuration of the field of startup activity and the global emphasis on “unicorn startups.” I will subsequently highlight how these institutions might be reoriented toward a “new normal” focused on responsible venture creation\, wherein the reformative aspects of disruption are prioritized while negative externalities are controlled. In doing so\, the discussion will illustrate interdependencies likely to both resist and emerge from such a transition toward responsible entrepreneurship\, while proposing a process of societal-level governance reform needed to address those tensions. The resulting conceptual model contributes to the emerging literature on responsible governance of innovation by shifting the focus toward the systems change needed to overcome institutional-level constraints and transition toward a responsible entrepreneurship ideology. In so doing I also challenge prior theoretical conceptualizations regarding the relationship between disruption and entrepreneurship. \n \n  \nProfessor Grimes is a member of the Organisational Theory and Information Systems subject group at Cambridge Judge Business School\, Academic Co-Director of the Cambridge Judge Entrepreneurship Centre\, and current Deputy Editor at the Academy of Management Journal (formerly Associate Editor). His research interests include entrepreneurship and sustainable development. He examines how individuals and organizations create\, introduce\, and sustain positive social change by way of entrepreneurship by studying both the contextual and individual factors that contribute to innovation and the governance of innovation \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’
DESCRIPTION:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’ \nPrescribing and maintaining in public spaces: Challenges for developers \n  \nA change of scenery for this eighth session as the seminar moves to Coeur Défense to meet with the Paris La Défense teams. Heir to a unique urban form and institutional history\, the developer is also the operator of public spaces that are becoming heritage sites as much as they are being reconfigured. Though not fully embraced\, this form of integrated management has become established as crises\, reinvestments\, and the absence of municipal support have unfolded. \n– How does the developer reconcile his mission to preserve an existing structure that is not just limited to the immutability of infrastructure\, but also forms a composite heritage subject to the ravages of time and constant renewal of its models? \n– How do maintenance considerations influence project owners’ specifications and project design processes? \n– How does the operator’s gaze distract the designer from the illusion of “a world made up of finished\, solid things that are impermeable to change or subsequent intervention” (Pauline Lefebvre\, 2024\, Maintenance et dé-projection) \nOur two speakers\, David Guerra and Damien Oberlé\, will share their experiences to reveal the material fabric of these spaces filled with objects\, and bring into dialogue the temporalities that clash within the depth of the project in a common language where designing\, prescribing\, and maintaining are conjugate with knowing. \nAnd we will have the pleasure of welcoming Daniel Florentin\, a researcher from the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées\, who will kick off the discussion. \n  \nDate: Friday\, December 12\, 2025\, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. \nVenue: Cœur Défense\, Tour B\, 110 Espl. du Général de Gaulle\, 92400 Courbevoie. \n  \nParticipation is free but registration is required. Please register here.\nAttendance is limited. Kindly let us know if you are unable to attend. \nThe seminar will be held in French. \n  \n\nOrganized by architectural agency SCAU and Jérôme Denis.\nFind out more about the seminar program and objectives \n

SUMMARY:Industrial Adventures Seminar
DESCRIPTION:In 1968\, health authorities required Joseph and Simone Bougro\, butchers in Vendée\, to rebuild their laboratory\, which represented a year’s worth of revenue. Forced to grow\, they developed prepared meals\, which were so successful that they created Sodebo in 1973 to move into industrial production. Then their three daughters\, Marie-Laurence\, Patricia\, and Bénédicte\, now co-presidents\, developed the business. Sodebo launched numerous innovations\, diversifying into pasta\, salads\, etc. As variety often creates costly complexity in integrated companies\, specialized factories were created. To bring everything together\, a lean management specialist helped the executives structure the company\, and Margaux Mercier\, a member of the third generation of the founding family\, was involved in this transformation. Sodebo\, a medium-sized company with 3\,000 employees manufacturing more than a million products every day\, is now a benchmark in lean management. \nMandatory registration \nRegistration closes on Tuesday\, December 16\, 2025\, at 12:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Jean-Noël Jouzel (CSO) and Giovanni Prete (IRIS)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nJean-Noël Jouzel (CSO) and Giovanni Prete (IRIS) \n  \nto discuss their book \nL’agriculture empoisonnée \nLe long combat des victimes des pesticides \n  \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Isaac Bariller (second speaker tbc) \nQuatrième de couverture : Ce livre\, fruit d’une enquête menée pendant plus de dix ans\, raconte le difficile cheminement des exploitants agricoles pour se dire victime et obtenir réparation. \nPoisoned agriculture. The long struggle of pesticide victims \nOn 19 March 2011\, a dozen farmers gathered in Ruffec. They were welcomed at the grain farm of Paul François\, who developed neurological disorders seven years earlier after being poisoned by herbicides. The other farmers present were also suffering from serious chronic conditions. On that day\, Phyto-Victimes\, France’s first association of farmers affected by pesticides\, was formed. These farmers\, who are part of an agricultural system based on the extensive use of phytosanitary products\, were not predisposed to engage in such collective action. The result of an investigation spanning more than ten years\, this book recounts the difficult journey farmers have taken to assert their status as victims and secure compensation. It emphasizes the pivotal role of close family members and the importance of objective allies in mobilization\, ranging from physicians and union leaders to environmental activists\, lawyers\, journalists\, and scientists from backgrounds often worlds apart. This story\, which is both personal and political\, illustrates the long-term effects of intensive agriculture\, a practice that remains dominant today. \nJean-Noël Jouzel is a CNRS Research Director at the Centre for the Sociology of Organisations (CSO). His research focuses on controversies related to environmental health and occupational health issues\, from a perspective that combines science studies\, the sociology of public action\, and the sociology of social movements. His research contributes to the current surge in studies on the social construction of ignorance. \nGiovanni Prete is a lecturer at Sorbonne Paris Nord University and a researcher at IRIS. His research focuses on the social and political issues surrounding occupational and environmental health. In particular\, he studies mobilizations at individual and collective levels to raise awareness of the link between environmental and occupational exposure and health problems in various sectors\, especially agriculture. He is interested in the role of scientific knowledge and how it circulates in different arenas (administrative\, judicial and scientific)\, as well as how law is used in mobilizations. \nJean-Noël Jouzel et Giovanni Prete\, L’agriculture empoisonnée. SUMMARY:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nSéminaire ‘Maintenir. Architecture et maintenance\, ce qui nous tient’ \nMaintain more\, repair less? From words to action \n  \nWith Julien Le Mener\, CEO of AUXIGENE \n  \n  \nWhile transition policies emphasize the importance of renovation and transformation for building sustainability\, might this perspective overlook the fact that a building requires maintenance regardless of any performative actions related to the project and investment expenditure? \nFor this 9th session\, Julien Le Mener\, CEO of AUXIGENE\, a company specializing in multi-technical maintenance\, will address the issue of sustainability\, contrasting its acuteness with the invisibility of maintenance professionals’ forms and areas of intervention. \nTertiary decrees\, BACS decrees\, ECDs… What place do these regulatory measures\, which make performance the driving force behind action and the focus of attention\, leave for those who are concerned with maintaining and sustaining buildings daily? SUMMARY:Cultural Exception? Cerna seminar: The Impact of Price Regulation on Prices and Variety in the Market for Books
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that Christos Genakos (Cambridge) will be the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. The seminar will take place Wednesday\, January 21\, 2026 at 4 PM in Salle Vendome. \n  \nChristos will present his paper: \n  \nCultural Exception? The Impact of Price Regulation on Prices and Variety in the Market for Books \n(joint work with Mario Pagliero\, Lorien Sabatino and Tommaso Valletti) \n  \nFixed Book Price (FBP) agreements are a form of resale price maintenance aimed at promoting book variety by restricting retail price competition. Using a comprehensive dataset on the Italian book market before and after FBP implementation\, we find that FBP raises prices but does not significantly impact the number of new titles published. However\, it increases the variety of books purchased\, particularly from independent bookstores. A structural demand model reveals that consumers benefit overall due to improved service quality. Additional evidence suggests FBP shifts competition from price to service\, offering insights for resale price maintenance policies. \nThere will be an opportunity to schedule individual meetings and/or join lunch/dinner with Christos before the seminar. \nPlease enter your preferred time slot here.

SUMMARY:2nd Academic Day Mission-Driven Companies: Theories and Practices
DESCRIPTION:2nd Academic Day \nMission-Driven Companies: Theories and Practices\n  \nFollowing the first study day on “Mission-Driven Companies: Theory & Practice\,” which brought together numerous researchers involved in observing\, experimenting with\, or developing the mission-driven company model in January 2024\, we are pleased to invite you to attend the second edition of this research day on mission-driven companies. \nSince day one\, the number of mission-driven companies has exceeded 2\,000. And as the movement expands\, new questions arise. Beyond the dynamics of adoption\, studying the concrete effects of mission-driven companies raises questions about how missions are managed and monitored\, whether by researchers or consultants\, or by companies themselves. How are the legal tools of mission-driven companies received and mobilized? And how do stakeholders\, employees\, unions\, local communities\, and environmental advocates learn or could learn to better use these tools to steer ecological and just transitions? What roles can researchers play in these transformations? At the institutional level\, how does the case of mission-driven companies play into debates on public policies capable of making companies more accountable and promoting transitions? And what are the implications of debates on new legal forms of enterprise at the European level for the French framework? This second day will aim to continue the conversation\, share work in progress\, and nurture an interdisciplinary research community on mission-driven companies. \n  \nUpload the  programme_Evènement 27janvier2026_ \n  \nTo register\, click here (both in-person and remote participation are possible). \n  \nEvent organized by the Scientific Council of the Community of Mission-Driven Companies \n

SUMMARY:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’
DESCRIPTION:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’\nsession #10 \nWhat vegetation does to buildings \n  \nwith Antoine Guibourgé\, Commercial Director\, Exceptional Gardens\, Mugo \n  \nFrom design to completion\, architectural practice is an exercise in mastering and compromise. Navigating the intricacies of rules and constraints\, planning and anticipating (ageing\, vulnerabilities\, risks)\, and exercising control over every detail\, all demand attention and expertise directed towards the production of an object that conforms to the blueprint and is built to last. \nThese ‘thorny negotiations’ (Latour\, Yaneva\, 2008) become particularly salient when buildings are combined with a plant substrate. While greening increasingly seems to be an essential means of adapting architecture to the new climate regime\, it poses challenges for buildings at every stage\, from design to maintenance\, by introducing a living element that has long been excluded from the project. \nThis session explores the changes brought about by this tension: what place are we willing to give to plants and the various forms of interdependence they reveal? How can we agree on what to maintain\, what to let happen and what to make last?  \n  \nDate: Friday February 6\, 2026\, 10 am –1 pm \nVenue: Agence SCAU\, 35 rue Tournefort\, 75005 Paris \nParticipation is free but registration is required. SUMMARY:The CSI welcomes Ute Tellmann (Technische Universität Darmstadt)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI welcomes \nUte Tellmann \nProfessor of Sociology at theTechnische Universität Darmstadt \n  \nfor a seminar on her work on \nFinancialization and Assetization as a Politics of Property \n \n  \n\nThe seminar will be held in English. \nIn the debates on financialization and assetization\, property is often referred to as an important aspect of the delineation\, disentangling\, valuing and claiming of assets. Yet\, it often assumes the role of a background condition and is rarely made into a key term for in the analysis itself. While many economic categories\, such as value\, futurity or capitalization\, have been innovatively adapted to the contemporary financial constitution\, property has not been taken up in this effort of rethinking finance and economy to the same extent. This paper puts property to the test. Based on a case study on the financialization of rental housing\, it develops a “pragmatics of property” for financialization and assetization. The paper contends that a recalibrated notion of property improves our understanding of the politics of financialization and assetization. \n  \nContact: Liliana Doganova \n  \nPhoto source : Ute Telleman\, TU Darmstadt \n

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Lucile Ruault (Cermes3)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcome \nLucile Ruault \n  \nto discuss her book \nLe spéculum\, la canule et le miroir \nAvorter au MLAC\, une histoire entre féminisme et médecine \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Lauranne Chaignon and Mariam Beaure d’Augères \nQuatrième de couverture : La promulgation de la loi relative à l’IVG en 1975 est un retournement majeur dans l’histoire des femmes: l’État parvient enfin à réguler la pratique abortive. \nThe speculum\, the cannula and the mirror. Abortion at the MLAC: A History of Feminism and Medicine. \nThe passing of the French abortion law in 1975 marked a significant milestone in women’s history\, as the state finally succeeded in regulating abortion. By making the procedure the exclusive prerogative of doctors\, the ‘Veil Law’ restored order. It brought to a close a phase in which ordinary women had claimed ownership of knowledge about abortion. But how can we explain the swift end to this possibility at a time when women were on the verge of taking control over abortion? \nIn an attempt to shed light on this enigma\, Lucile Ruault focuses on the Mouvement pour la liberté de l’avortement et de la contraception (MLAC) [Movement for the Freedom of Abortion and Contraception] and\, in particular\, the covert activities of dissident groups who continued to perform abortions until 1984. This historical ethnography demonstrates that the establishment of abortion as a health issue was contentious\, and brings together the medicalisation of abortion and resistance to this process through lay abortion practices in a feminist sense. \nLucile Ruault\, Le spéculum\, la canule et le miroir. SUMMARY:Arpentage & Ecriture. STS Writing Workshop #5
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nRegistration: Please register here. \nTo receive updates\, subscribe to the “Arpentage et Écriture” newsletter here. \nThe workshop is held in French. \nThe workshop aims to provide a welcoming space for young researchers of all disciplinary backgrounds who are interested in the study of science and technology in France. \nWorkshop #5\nThis session is dedicated to the practice of writing STS. We will take the issues raised by writing PhD dissertation introductions as a specific example. \nWe are pleased to welcome Jeanne Oui\, a CNRS researcher at LISIS\, who will be co-hosting this session. We will be discussing the challenges of writing in the social sciences\, as well as what constitutes an “STS” contribution today. \nIf you are currently writing your PhD dissertation introduction or have just finished it and would like to participate\, we invite you to use this forum to tell us about your writing process and the choices you made. Alternatively\, if you have not yet reached this stage of the writing process\, but would like to submit an introduction to a dissertation you intend to write\, we encourage you to try this writing exercise. You don’t need to worry if the references lack precision\, the formatting is messy\, the writing is imperfect\, or your research is not yet well-established. \nWe therefore encourage you to send us a text\, whether it is a work in progress or complete. Do not hesitate — the workshop aims to provide a welcoming forum in which to discuss work in progress. \nSeminar Details\nThe seminar details are as follows (they will also be sent to participants by email):\n– In-person in Paris at different locations to discover each other’s laboratories and universities\n– Half-day sessions (four hours\, including a snack break)\n– Two types of sessions: Reading Workshop: Theory\, Concepts\, Methodology and Writing Workshop: Analysis\, Writing\, Fieldwork\n– No work is required beforehand. Reading is done on site collectively using methods such as arpentage\, which explains the extended duration of the sessions.\n– A friendly atmosphere: we suggest sharing a meal after each session. \nWorkshop Organizers and Facilitators\nAurélien Béranger – PhD Candidate\, Laboratoire Costech\, Université de Technologie de Compiègne.\nEmail: aurelien.beranger@utc.fr \nDorian Groll – PhD Candidate\, Centre Maurice Halbwachs\, CAK.\nEmail: dorian.groll@ens.psl.eu \nAlexia Pronesti – PhD Candidate\, GSPR & Cermes3\, EHESS.\nEmail: alexia.pronesti@ehess.fr \nSolène Sarnowski – PhD Candidate\, Centre de Sociologie de l’Innovation (CSI)\, Mines Paris & Télécom-Paris\, Institut Polytechnique de Paris\, NOS.\nEmail: solene.sarnowski@minesparis.psl.eu \n  \n  \n\nLearn more about the 2025-2026 Program for the seminar ‘Arpentage & Écriture: STS Reading Workshop’.

SUMMARY:Ignorance\, the Unknown and Creation in Democracy - Théâtre de la Concorde
DESCRIPTION:By the Bauhaus des Transitions at Mines Paris PSL\, in partnership with ILExpansions \n\nAt the Théâtre de la Concorde\, we believe that democracy is not built solely on the accumulation of knowledge\, but also on the way in which a society recognises\, organises and explores what it does not yet know. At a time when ignorance is often reduced to a deficit to be filled or a threat to be combated\, this meeting proposes to make it an object of scientific\, political and creative reflection. How can we think of the unknown as an active condition for democratic action?Hosted by Ana Semedo and organised by Mines Paris – PSL\, this round table brings together researchers\, teachers and design professionals to examine contemporary forms of ignorance and the unknown in our societies. \nDescription\n\nHosted by Ana Semedo and organised by Mines Paris – PSL\, this round table brings together researchers\, teachers and design professionals to examine contemporary forms of ignorance and the unknown in our societies. \nFar from pitting enlightened knowledge against ignorance\, the discussion draws on scientific research and design practice to show that many human activities operate precisely in the unknown. Fundamental research\, artistic creation\, engineering\, teaching and collective design are often developed on the basis of partial knowledge\, hypotheses under construction and collectively explored imaginaries. Fundamental research\, artistic creation\, engineering\, teaching\, and collective design are often developed based on partial knowledge\, hypotheses under construction\, and collectively explored ideas. \nRecent scientific advances have made it possible to better characterise what it means to “think in the unknown”. We can now provide a formal definition\, study its properties and structure – thereby extending the notion of “truth” or “the known” – and show that there are cognitive mechanisms specific to reasoning in the unknown. \nThe discussions will draw on several disciplines: mathematics\, cognitive science\, psychology of creativity\, management science and design science\, in order to understand how individuals and groups explore the unknown\, with what biases\, what tools and what forms of organisation. This work therefore opens up avenues for overcoming the dilemma between a democratic life based on the assumption of decisions informed by omniscient expertise\, and decisions based on common sense\, which we know to be limited and fragile. It will also be necessary to examine the tensions inherent in these new exploration capabilities\, between democratic openness\, risks associated with the unknown\, power asymmetries and technocratic temptations. \nBy combining academic research\, professional practices and civic reflection\, this event is part of the Théâtre de la Concorde’s project to foster dialogue between scientific knowledge and public debate\, in order to collectively consider how our societies can learn\, decide and innovate in the face of the unknown. \nWith: \n\nAnne Asensio\, Vice President of Design Experience\, Dassault Systèmes\nOlivia Caramello\, Associate Professor\, University of Insubria (Como)\, Mathematics\nMathieu Cassotti\, Professor\, Paris Cité University\, Developmental Psychology and Creativity\nPascal Le Masson\, Professor\, Mines Paris – PSL\, Management and Design Sciences\nChipten Valibhay\, Lecturer-Researcher\, Mines Paris – PSL\, Management and Design Sciences\nModerator Ana Semedo\n\nIn partnership with the Bauhaus des Transitions – Mines Paris PSL\, teaching and research chair. \nFor registration

SUMMARY:Cerna seminar wil welcome El Hadi Caoui (Toronto)
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that El Hadi Caoui (Toronto) will be the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. The seminar will take place Wednesday\, February 18\, 2026 at 4 PM in Salle Vendome. \nHadi will present his paper: \nEstimating Consumer Preferences for LLMs: Evidence from LMArena \nThis paper studies product differentiation in the consumer market for large language models (LLMs) using data from randomized pairwise comparisons of LLM responses. I estimate a differentiated-product demand model in which consumer taste parameters vary with prompt embeddings. Perceived LLM quality is strongly associated with an LLM’s benchmark performance\, context window size\, and reasoning ability. Taste heterogeneity across consumers is significant and arises primarily over the stylistic and syntactic features of responses (e.g.\, readability\, verbosity\, tone\, and formatting)\, along which LLMs systematically differ. Counterfactual analysis shows that\, between 2024 and 2025\, consumer surplus per user increased by 38%–54% (equivalently\, $37.4–$52.9 per user-month). For the average user\, improvements in model intelligence account for 61\% of this welfare gain\, with an even larger share for technical tasks (71% for coding). \nThere will be an opportunity to schedule individual meetings and/or join lunch/dinner with Hadi before the seminar. \nPlease enter your preferred time slot here. \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:Industrial Adventures Seminar: French watchmaking: the genesis of a revival
DESCRIPTION:Heir to exceptional expertise\, the French watchmaking industry was one of the world’s great pioneers in the measurement of time. However\, this historic prestige almost fell into oblivion. The industry’s production base was decimated by a series of crises\, from the revocation of the Edict of Nantes\, which led to the exile of Protestant watchmakers to Switzerland\, to the wave of deindustrialization in the 1970s\, exacerbated by the quartz revolution. The watchmaking industry gradually transformed into an assembly industry dependent on foreign countries. But in recent years\, an unexpected revival has begun. Faced with a new crisis\, that of Covid-19\, the industry has decided to take back control of its destiny. It is through entrepreneurial drive\, with an unprecedented mobilization of academic models of innovation management\, that the reindustrialization of French watchmaking has come about. \n  \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n Sandrine Marcot\n \n \n \n \n \n Tony Da Motta \n \n \n \nRegistration  \nRegistration closes on Thursday\, February 19\, 2026\, at 12:00 p.m. \n

SUMMARY:Arpentage & Ecriture. STS Reading Workshop #6
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nRegistration: Please register here (before March 15\, 2026) \nTo receive updates\, subscribe to the “Arpentage et Écriture” newsletter here. \nThe workshop is held in French. \nThe workshop aims to provide a welcoming space for young researchers of all disciplinary backgrounds who are interested in the study of science and technology in France. \nWorkshop #6\nThis session\, organized in the form of an “Arpentage / Exploration”\, will be devoted to \nVoir les savoirs. Lieux\, objets et gestes de la science\nJean-François Bert et Jérôme Lamy \nAnamosa\, 2021.

SUMMARY:CERNA Research Seminar will welcome Antoine Dechezlepretre
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that Antoine Dechezlepretre (OECD) will be the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. The seminar will take place Wednesday\, March18\, 2026 at 4:30 PM in Amphi L109. \n  \nAntoine’s talk will be embedded into this year’s JDD edition and will also serve as the JDD’s keynote. You’ll receive more info on the JDD and the program soon in a separate email. \n  \nAntoine will present his paper: \n  \nThe Great Dispersion in Energy Productivity Between Firms: Evidence from Representative Data for Nine Countries \n  \nThis paper explores the differences between firms’ energy productivity using representative microdata for nine countries. It documents wide dispersion in energy productivity across firms within narrowly defined industries. On average\, the 90th percentile firm is 20 times more energy productive than the 10th percentile firm in the same industry\, compared with five times for labour productivity. There is no sign that dispersion is narrowing down over time. Addressing this dispersion could have major implications: for example\, raising the energy productivity of the least productive firms to that of the 25th percentile firm in their industry would reduce aggregate energy consumption (and associated emissions) by almost half for the same level of output. Machine learning and regression methods reveal a strong link between economic and energy efficiency. Higher energy prices\, stronger competition\, better access to finance and greater innovation activity also explain dispersion\, suggesting a role for policies to reduce it. \n  \nThere will be an opportunity to schedule individual meetings and/or join lunch/dinner with Antoine before the seminar. \nPlease enter your preferred time slot here. \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’
DESCRIPTION:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’\nsession #10 \nInert but under surveillance – Fragile concrete  \n  \nChristophe Batard\, Heritage Architect (2BDM Agency) \nand Raphaël Royer-de-Vericourt\, Architect-Engineer (T/E/S/S)\nDiscussant: Martin Denoun (SPIRAL\, Liège) \n  \nLong presented as an inert\, solid\, and durable material\, concrete conveyed a promise of stability that contributed to its widespread use throughout the 20th century\, but also to the decline of a culture of maintenance that was negatively associated with “traditional” materials. Paradoxically\, this ubiquitous material still provides limited insight into building life cycles. As buildings age\, the diversity and complexity of deterioration — carbonation\, cracking\, and corrosion of reinforcements — becomes apparent. These processes intertwine a multitude of parameters\, including construction periods and methods\, initial imperfections\, maintenance defects\, and exposure environment. \nFrom proclaimed inertia to material “under surveillance\,” the trajectories of aging and emerging forms of intervention to repair\, restore\, and extend the life of buildings are shaping a new field of reflection and knowledge production at the intersection of architecture and maintenance. \n  \nDate: Friday March 20\, 2026\, 10 am –1 pm \nVenue: Mines-Paris PSL\, 60 bd Saint-Michel\, 75006 Paris\, room L117 \nParticipation is free but registration is required. SUMMARY:Debate: “Reindustrialization: An Exercise in Democracy”
DESCRIPTION:  \nYou are invited to the event:  \n“Reindustrialization: An Exercise in Democracy”démocratie” \nThis event will be held at Mines Paris PSL on March 24\, 2026\, at 5:30 p.m. to mark the publication of the book “Industry and Residents: An Unsolvable Equation?” written by engineering students at Mines Paris-PSL under the guidance of Caroline Granier of La Fabrique de l’industrie. \nThe book draws on four case studies conducted by students in the Public Affairs and Innovation (API) track\, under the guidance of Liliana Doganova and Clément Marquet of the Center for the Sociology of Innovation\, to examine the tensions between public policies aimed at “reindustrialization” and the “acceptability” of industrial projects in the regions where they seek to establish themselves.  \nThree of the students who participated in this study—Yves Abraham\, Marie Granotier\, and David Yung—will share their experiences and findings. Their presentation will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Florian Augagneur (Vice President of the CNDP)\, Philippe Ledenvic (former President of the Environmental Authority)\, and Serge Catoire (Director of Industry at the UIMM).  \n📅 March 24\, 2026 | 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM\n📍 Mines Paris PLS | 60 Bd Saint-Michel\, 75005 Paris | Colonnes Room \nProgram\n5:15 PM – Welcome\n5:30 PM – Introduction by Caroline Granier\n5:45 PM – Presentation by Yves Abraham\, Marie Granotier\, and David Yung\n6:25 PM – Panel discussion and Q&A\n6:50 PM – Buffet and networking \nRegistration: https://www.la-fabrique.fr/fr/evenement/reindustrialisation-un-exercice-de-democratie/

SUMMARY:Séminaire Aventures industrielles avec Arnaud Haefelin\, PDG de Gainerie 91
DESCRIPTION:  \nCombining luxury\, innovation\, and sustainability: \nthe ambitions of Gainerie 91 \nby \nArnaud HAEFELIN\nCEO of Gainerie 91 \nGainerie 91\, a leather goods company founded in 1967\, was taken over in 2001 by Arnaud Haefelin\, who expanded its scope of activity and embarked on its internationalization. Its mission is to enhance luxury brands by offering them attractive and eco-friendly packaging. It controls the entire process from design to delivery\, including manufacturing\, where others subcontract. With more than 600 artisans\, four factories in France\, Mauritius\, China\, and Portugal\, and certified as a Living Heritage Company in 2012\, it has a solid position with loyal luxury brands. Investing in eco-design and with a materials library of 1\,000 materials validated by life cycle analyses\, it has made sustainability a key part of its strategy. While luxury brands had relocated to reduce costs\, we are now seeing a reversal of this trend\, which Gainerie 91 wants to take advantage of by doubling its production capacity in France. \n  \nTo register for the session\, click here \n\n

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Olivier Alexandre (Centre Internet et Société)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nOlivier Alexandre \n  \nto discuss his book \nLa Tech \nQuand la Silicon Valley refait le monde \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Orso Roger and Guilhaum Panas \nQuatrième de couverture : La Silicon Valley\, cœur battant des nouvelles technologies\, rythme le quotidien de milliards d’individus. \nTech : When Silicon Valley reshapes the world \nBack cover: Silicon Valley is the beating heart of new technologies and sets the pace for the daily lives of billions of people. It has transformed the way we communicate\, keep up to date\, work\, enjoy entertainment\, and experience love. Its companies are at the forefront of media attention\, with technological breakthroughs\, financial markets and court cases. From space exploration to quantum computing\, its engineers are pushing the boundaries of the infinitely large and small. Its scientists are planning to conquer death and create machines that surpass humans. \nThis book offers an immersive insight into a world that even inspires Hollywood\, yet remains relatively unknown. Rather than focusing solely on the big names\, it depicts the journeys\, mindsets and methods of the people who battle daily within a hyper-selective system to attract investors\, hire the best developers and find solutions that will change the world. \nFrom Burning Man to anti-tech protests\, it provides an insight into a world of constant revolution\, brimming with both promise and concern for the future. \nOlivier Alexandre\, La Tech. SUMMARY:Seminar on Economics and Meaning
DESCRIPTION:The Paris School of Management invites you to its next session:  \nHotel eco-label:mere display   \nou or a rethinking of practices? \n  \nby \nCaroline PIEL MARTIN-ROUX \nPresident and CEO of Hôtels en Ville \nColombe GUELLERIN\nDeputy CEO of Hôtels en Ville \nPedro GOMES LOPES\nCEO of The Swarm\, PhD candidate in Management Science at i3-CRG  \nTuesday\, March 31\, 2026  \nfrom 5:00 p.m. (sharp) to 7:00 p.m. \nat Mines Paris – 60\, boulevard Saint-Michel\, 75006 Paris \n  \nClick here to sign up \nRegistration closes on Tuesday\, March 31\, 2026\, at 12:00 p.m \n  \nBrief Overview \nEco-labels are everywhere. In the French hospitality sector\, nearly 20% of establishments have committed to obtaining an eco-label. Does this reflect a genuine shift in practices or merely an attempt to appear more environmentally friendly? The wide variety of these labels\, issued by public or private organizations\, makes it difficult to see the big picture The European Ecolabel\, a public certification program established in 1992\, is distinguished by its high standards and its commitment to eco-design and environmental management. Its implementation encompasses the hotel’s technical systems\, management policies\, employee practices\, and guest behavior. Using the example of the Paris-based Hôtels en Ville collection\, which decided in 2022 to obtain eco-labels for all of its properties\, this session will explore how an eco-label—initially viewed as a compliance requirement—is gradually becoming a framework that shapes the business.  \n  \nTo find out about other sessions at the École de Paris\, please check the general schedule online : www.ecole.org/fr/agenda \n  \n  \nL’École de Paris du management   \n60\, boulevard Saint-Michel – 75272 PARIS CEDEX 06\nTél. : 01 42 79 40 85\nhttp://www.ecole.org \n
