It is based on an ethnographic inquiry into the operations of this medical humanitarian NGO as they take place. Observing members of MSF providing healthcare to migrants in Paris and to inhabitants of a slum in Nairobi\, evaluating and planning projects in their headquarters\, we see them tinker together the sometimes-incompatible goals of a seemingly simple humanitarian mission: medical assistance to the vulnerable around the world. Our pragmatist approach consists in arguing that analysis of international aid must account for how humanitarians find a way to hold together the ambiguities\, and even the contradictions\, of this claimed mission in the ambivalent effects humanitarian aid in practice.\nTo this end\, we ask how MSF selects those it seeks to assist around the world. Our response entails close description of the instrumentation of triage: the problematic processes of elaborating and using tools that support the reflexive choice of beneficiaries around the globe. We then make three analytical gestures\, allowing us to contribute to ongoing discussions in anthropology on global assemblages\, global spaces\, and global health. First\, we show how the processes of bordering\, territorializing\, and scaling that triage instruments support\, participate in producing humanitarian locations: humanitarian space\, the field\, medical platforms\, and headquarters. Second\, analysing the ways triage instruments script for those humanitarians claim to assist\, we argue that MSF gains humanitarian agency in the ways it relates to humanitarian beneficiaries: the tact and tactics of care\, the reciprocal recognition of beneficiaries in their need and of MSF’s need to help\, the acceptance of responsibility for this vulnerability coupled with an attempt to transfer responsibility to public health care systems. Third\, accounting for these instruments in terms of humanitarian technologies of intervention\, we demonstrate how MSF makes timely interventions into governing bodies and the bodies of the governed. Together\, our description of aid as it takes place and our analysis of the problems associated with humanitarian locations\, beneficiaries\, and technologies of intervention constitute what we call MSF’s humanitarian presence. This humanitarian presence indicates the ways MSF exists\, in their global physical extension\, in the health care they practice\, in their nongovernmental politics and their ethics of attention. This concept supports critique by indicating\, first\, the multiple and incompatible goods that are to inhere in humanitarian aid\, and second\, those specific instances when MSF has failed to do so.

The response of the international institution was to describe itself as a “Knowledge Bank”\, claiming by this term that its primary value lied in its development knowledge\, while acknowledging the political nature and the need to transform this knowledge. This thesis takes up this self-description and investigates the current nature of this Knowledge Bank. To this end\, ethnographic studies\, mainly in West Africa\, were conducted on knowledge that the World Bank itself has identified as one of its prominent concern: the knowledge embedded in its development interventions (projects\, technical assistance). By discussing mainly the literature in anthropology of development\, and building upon relevant work in Science and technology studies\, the thesis identifies an “expertise as operation” at the heart of these interventions. This expression denotes the actions undertaken by World Bank experts (consultants\, project managers) to construct or transform the identities and problems of individual or collective entities\, through the production and mobilisation of knowledge about them\, and often by ensuring that these entities seize upon this knowledge about themselves. The choice made in the thesis to analyse economic interventions (support for the competitiveness of an economic sector\, support for the development of entrepreneurship\, or research on industrial policies) allows for an in-depth analysis of the much criticized neoliberal and “economicist” policy of the World Bank\, so as to show that the politics of the institution cannot be reduced to those aspects\, and is primarily embedded in these operations of expertise on identities and problems.

SUMMARY:Guest seminar with Lilly Irani
DESCRIPTION:Guest seminar with \nLilly Irani \nAssociate Professor\, Communication\, Science Studies\, Computer Science\, \nCritical Gender Studies\, Design Lab | University of California San Diego \n  \nChasing Innovation: \nMaking Entrepreneurial Citizens \nin Modern India \nIntroduction to the discussion by Carole-Anne Tisserand \n  \nPublisher’s presentation : Can entrepreneurs develop a nation\, serve the poor\, and pursue creative freedom\, all while generating economic value? In Chasing Innovation\, Lilly Irani shows the contradictions that arise as designers\, engineers\, and businesspeople frame development and governance as opportunities to innovate. Irani documents the rise of “entrepreneurial citizenship” in India over the past seventy years\, demonstrating how a global ethos of development through design has come to shape state policy\, economic investment\, and the middle class in one of the world’s fastest-growing nations. \nDrawing on her own professional experience as a Silicon Valley designer and nearly a decade of fieldwork following a Delhi design studio\, Irani vividly chronicles the practices and mindsets that hold up professional design as the answer to the challenges of a country of more than one billion people\, most of whom are poor. While discussions of entrepreneurial citizenship promise that Indian children can grow up to lead a nation aspiring to uplift the poor\, in reality\, social\, economic\, and political structures constrain whose enterprise\, which hopes\, and which needs can be seen as worthy of investment. In the process\, Irani warns\, powerful investors\, philanthropies\, and companies exploit citizens’ social relations\, empathy\, and political hope in the quest to generate economic value. Irani argues that the move to recast social change as innovation\, with innovators as heroes\, frames others—craftspeople\, workers\, and activists—as of lower value\, or even dangers to entrepreneurial forms of development. \nWith meticulous historical context and compelling stories\, Chasing Innovation lays bare how long-standing power hierarchies such as class\, caste\, language\, and colonialism continue to shape opportunity in a world where good ideas supposedly rule all. \nLilly Irani\, Chasing Innovation. His work focuses on the writing of history during the High Middle Ages. In this seminar\, he proposes to examine how a particular historiographical genre (the gesta episcoporum)\, of which there are some twenty examples\, corresponded to a political\, religious and cultural reorganization of the West\, that of the Carolingian Empire. These Gesta reveal the modes of construction and justification of acts of good management in the bishoprics of the West. \n\nThe current health crisis is forcing us to reorganise a few things\, and as a consequence the meeting initially planned with prof. Leixnering and Doralt has been postponed to October 20. SUMMARY:8th ARAMOS Congress
DESCRIPTION:Organizational and managerial innovation in health care Theoretical framework\, impact analysis on professional practices and organization of care\nSpecific Expectations on Management Feedback \nManagerial innovation\, organizational innovation\, there is no shortage of terms to support this new trend in the health sector. Article 51 is an illustration of the mobilization of public authorities in this field.\nFrom the point of view of management research\, this subject offers many opportunities.\nThe first concerns the conceptual definition of managerial or organizational innovation (the distinction between the two representing an issue in itself) in the field of health. Various works (notably those of Kimberly and Hamel) have provided analytical frameworks for situating this type of innovation in relation to technological innovations. It remains to situate this relationship between organisational and technological innovation in the specific context of health\, particularly in the case of digital (telemedicine devices\, connected tools\, etc.) and massive data processing (machine learning algorithms). There is often some confusion in the relationship between technological innovation and organization. In some cases\, it is the forgetting of the organizational context in which the technology is embedded that leads to neglecting its uses (for example\, a telemedicine device is introduced without understanding its uses in a given organizational context). In other cases\, it is the link between the technology and the organisation within an innovative approach that is unclear (for example\, Internet applications or portals for remote patient monitoring need to be thought through with coordinating nurses and modes of organisation in the exchange of information).\nThe second opportunity for analysis aims to clarify the content of these innovations. It is interesting to understand what is put under the terms “management” and “organisation”: new coordination professions\, e-health technologies\, patient engagement\, teamwork\, multi-professional communication along a patient pathway\, the approaches seem quite broad and deserve to specify the contours of organisational innovation in health.\nThe third is to provide evidence of their added value in terms of quality of care\, cost control\, patient experience\, or professional satisfaction. The evaluation modality is itself a research topic\, as the doctrine on the subject is not settled\, particularly in the link between quantitative and qualitative approaches\, or in the consideration of a “realistic” evaluation during development. \nRegistration deadline: September 25\, 2020 \nSeminar video conference \nRegistration 8th ARAMOS Congress \nProgramme 8ème congrès ARAMOS \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The hospital in front of Covid 19\, a contribution of management sciences.
DESCRIPTION:The CGS team’s recommendations on the War Room\nHelping students at two Parisian hospitals in the Ile-de-France region\nFor years\, management researchers at Mines ParisTech have been conducting collaborations with the world of health. In particular\, the CGS has been present and has accompanied the piloting of hospital reforms such as the obligation for hospitals to group together in Territorial Hospital Groups\, the so-called “ambulatory shift” reform and the reform of hospital financing. \nThe hospitals of Montreuil and Avicenne called on CGS students to deal with the shortage of electric syringe pumps\, to find solutions for the follow-up of Covid patients after hospitalization\, teleconsultation and the risks of contamination in the hospital. \nTo learn more about the solutions recommended by the CGS team\, please click on the article de la Revue des Mines n°509 \n  \nThe report: “The French hospital system in the covid-19 crisis\, a contribution from management sciences”. \n\nThe report\nIt is a feedback on the management of the Covid-19 crisis by the actors of the hospital system. This experience feedback comes back on the way the actors understood the crisis on the difficulty linked to the extent of the phenomenon. The report examined the way the hospital system organized itself to manage the crisis and how it coped with it. \nFor details of this document\, please click here. \n  \nThe interviews of Etienne Minvielle and Hervé Dumez\nThe interview of Etienne Minvielle: \n                           \nThe interview of Hervé Dumez: \n \nThe article in the Express Céline Delbecque\, published on 24/07/2020: \n\n“Faced with Covid-19\, the involvement and creativity of the hospitals was impressive”.” \nTwo researchers in management indicate\, in a report published this Friday\, the tracks to try to “better prepare for possible future health crises”. By interviewing 55 actors linked to the crisis\, in “all regions and at all levels of the system”\, the researchers tried to draw a series of lessons\, in order to “better prepare for possible future health crises”. Importance of management\, local initiatives\, cohesion within territories.\n\nDespite an unprecedented health crisis\, the French hospital “did not crack under pressure”: this is the conclusion of a report\, led by two management specialists at the CNRS and published this Friday. In a 90-page document\, Hervé Dumez and Étienne Minvielle\, researchers at the Interdisciplinary Institute of Innovation\, tried to understand how the hospital system managed the crisis for more than three months.  \nL’Express. Why did you decide to work on such a report?   \nHervé Dumez. As management researchers\, the idea came quite naturally to us. We wanted to understand how hospitals were able to manage such a huge crisis\, in terms of its scale and intensity. We took advantage of the de-escalation of the crisis\, at the end of April\, to question a multitude of actors\, whether healthcare staff\, civil servants\, central administrations\, but also more indirect actors\, such as the pharmaceutical industry or dispensing chemists\, who have sometimes become the last link between patients and the medical profession.   \nWhat are the main conclusions to be drawn from this report?   \nHervé Dumez. The most important one remains crisis management. Despite many anxieties and complex situations\, the tone is quite positive: the system has managed to hold up. The perception we have is that there was a real balance between the central action of the State\, which took fundamental decisions for the system – such as containment\, but also the deprogramming of operations at the beginning of the crisis or the transfer of patients between more or less affected areas – and the local initiatives taken in hospitals.   \nOn the other hand\, this crisis would not have been the same without the involvement and creativity of the hospitals themselves\, whose response to the crisis was quite impressive. We are not saying that everything happened in the best of all possible worlds\, of course\, but that in a major crisis like this one\, the hospital system was able to adapt in a quick and relevant way.   \nÉtienne Minvielle. One point that is also very important to remember is the anticipation of threats. More and more\, we will be confronted with new crises\, whether epidemiological or infectious – but each of them will be unprecedented. What we learn from the previous crisis is important in terms of reflexes\, but not in terms of content. For example\, there we ran out of masks; next time it will be something else. So the question is more about how to anticipate crises\, the organizational reflex\, and the forms of management to adopt in order to adapt.   \nHow have local initiatives contributed to this adaptation?   \nHervé Dumez. In this report\, we give considerable importance to the famous creativity shown by hospitals. There has been the ability to create resuscitation beds very quickly\, to call on retired people or students\, to bring in staff from all over the place to equip the resuscitation departments… There are hospitals that have created masks with 3D printers\, entire departments that have had quite remarkable inventiveness\, including from the technical staff.   \nBut are there some negative points to be retained from this crisis?   \nÉtienne Minvielle. There are indeed some black points to highlight\, starting with the masks. It appears that the lack of equipment was extremely distressing for professionals\, and we have received a certain amount of criticism about the way the State managed the orders. What stands out\, in general\, are the difficulties of supply\, both for masks and respirators\, for example.  \nThe disaster was also avoided on some medicines\, which were in tight supply at certain moments of the crisis. Here again\, the creativity of the staff was remarkable: some hospitals\, for example\, brought back retired anesthesiologists to explain to the younger staff how to practice their profession without a certain type of medication\, in order to prepare for a possible shortage.   \nThere are also more critical points in the Ehpad: this is undoubtedly one of the most negative points in the management of this crisis. Some establishments were staffed with night nurses\, others were not… This kind of injustice was very badly experienced by some caregivers. This kind of injustice was very badly experienced by some caregivers. But it appears that the worst was avoided\, with local initiatives by hospital teams who came to help the Ehpad\, for example.   \nWhat lessons can we learn from this report to better prepare for future health crises?   \nÉtienne Minvielle. We have to be very careful\, since the crisis is not yet over\, and each health crisis is different. In any case\, the central question remains the management of hospital performance\, in the broadest sense of the term\, whether we’re talking about finances\, but also beds\, teams\, etc. The main issue is the management of hospital performance\, in the broadest sense of the term. We clearly need to rethink the place of the hospital in its territory: to reflect on the link between the hospital and the Ehpad\, between the hospital and city medicine\, and between the hospital and pharmacies.   \nThere is also a reflection to be made on the explosion of telemedicine\, which for years had been thought to need to be developed\, but which was blocked by all kinds of administrative mechanisms. When doctors are questioned\, a large proportion indicate that they wish to maintain these teleconsultations\, which are clearly part of the patient’s future care pathway.  \nYour report highlights the importance of management within the hospital. Why is it necessary?  \nÉtienne Minvielle. This issue of management is paramount. In the interviews we conducted\, we noted great anxiety about communication difficulties\, people being moved from one department to another without explanation\, this feeling of “being used as a stopgap”. It is necessary to provide support through recognition in the work\, not to forget the professionals “on the periphery”\, to be able to integrate them in very short periods of time\, to avoid taking them for pawns.   \nThis form of proximity management is fundamental\, because the managerial attitude is almost as important as the number of beds or respirators. This is what makes a system work\, and also one of the ways to improve the attractiveness of hospital jobs\, which are cruelly lacking in popularity.   \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Social Sciences on a trey: Sandrine Bubendorff and Caroline Rizza (SES)
DESCRIPTION:This seminar is organized around the social sciences (and digital)\, alternating presentations by social science researchers from Télécom Paris and other institutions on the plateau (on either side of the Nationale 118). \nIt will take place from Télécom Paris (digital school). The premieres will take place on Zoom\, but who knows? One day\, perhaps it will be held in the already celebrated flagship of architecture that hosts Télécom Paris. A room is reserved for those who prefer to come on site. \nFor the first session\, we hope to see many of you welcoming this new space for exchanges\, inaugurated by a presentation of : \nSandrine Bubendorff and Caroline Rizza (SES)\, “Making sense collectively in times of crisis: the use of Wikipedia during the covid-19 pandemic”. \nAbstract: \nFalling within the field of “crisis informatics”\, this article highlights the ways in which citizens collectively elaborate meaning through social media during a particularly uncertain phenomenon\, the Covid-19 pandemic. We conducted a qualitative analysis using ethnographic work carried out on the pages of the encyclopedia in connection with the pandemic and interviews with Wikipedian contributors and a member of the Wikimedia-France Foundation. We thus show how the know-how of the site’s contributors makes it possible to offer readers a clearer understanding of a dramatic event that is currently a vector of uncertainty\, and we highlight the specificities of the health crisis compared to other so-called civil security crises. Specifically\, the construction of meaning related to the pandemic requires an unprecedented reorganization of the ways of doing things\, particularly according to the successive stages of the pandemic and in the face of the phenomenon of disinformation associated with the crisis. \nThe analyses and results thus presented are part of the MESCOV research project “Social media during the covid-19 crisis: information circulation and citizen initiatives”\, subsidized by the Ministry of Higher Education\, Research and Innovation\, Analysis\, Research and Expertise Committee (CARE).  It aims to specialize on certain aspects of the Covid-19 crisis the pre-existing ANR MACIV project on crisis management\, social media and citizen engagement (ANR-17-CE39-0015).  \nPractical information: \n– Zoom Login : \nhttps://telecom-paris.zoom.us/j/94453445512?pwd=UTErSm9pOHdWcUFBbGF2NmFZTjBYQT09 \nMeeting ID: 944 5344 5512 \nSecret code: 502124 \n– Room 3A247\, Télécom Paris\, 19 Place Marguerite Perey\, 91120 Palaiseau : building A\, 3rd floor\, wing 2\, office 47 \nThe next sessions will be held on the 3rd or 4th Monday of the month\, starting at 10am. DESCRIPTION:The Chair in Business Theory is pleased to invite you to the next session of the seminar “Business\, Responsibility and Civilization”.  \n on October 20\, from 4 to 6 pm\, around \nPeter Doralt et Stephan Leixnering \n« What are companies for ? A ‘rare affaire’ of law with social science »   \nConference organized on the Zoom platform \n \nIn order to connect you on October 20th\, we provide you with the Zoom link below:  \nhttps://zoom.us/j/91830675408?pwd=WVZEalBPc3Z1WTZoM0llK3NwSmlaQT09  \nPeter Doralt is Professor Emeritus of Commercial and Company Law at WU Vienna University of Economics and Business\, and Stephan Leixnering is Senior Scientist at the Research Institute for Urban Management and Governance\, at WU Vienna. The two authors’ presentation stems from the question asked by US corporate giants in a Business Roundtable’s 2019 Statement on the Purpose of the Corporation: What are companies for? Taking an inter-disciplinary perspective\, using both law and social sciences\, they will examine how Austrian corporate law has introduced a legal provision requiring corporate leaders to consider plural interests in their managing of the corporation. Mainly\, they will show how the emerging form of the ‘enterprise’ vis-à-vis the ‘corporation’\, has led to the legal consideration of the stakeholders’ interests\, as well as the enterprise’s own interest.

SUMMARY:Workshops : Evaluation and beyond – Data visualization
DESCRIPTION:Workshop on evaluation and beyond – methodological approaches for Visualization 2020\nWe invite contributions to BELIV 2020\, the international forum to broadly discuss research methods in visualization.\n \nOur discussions span from novel and not-yet fully established evaluation methods for visualization tools and techniques\, to methods that more generally establish the validity and scope of acquired visualisation knowledge. BELIV supports contributions and discussions from the rich spectrum of visualisation researchers\, embracing the varied ways that researchers self-identify with respect to the main conference tracks at VIS. Complementary to the broad scope of BELIV and its general commitment to research methods\, BELIV 2020 will include a timely focus topic: From a Distance: Research practices during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. See the Call for Papers for more details. \n\nAnastasia Bezerianos\, Université Paris-Saclay\nKyle Hall\, Temple University\nSamuel Huron\, Télécom Paris\nMatthew Kay\, University of Michigan\nMiriah Meyer\, University of Utah\nMichael Sedlmair\, University of Stuttgart\n\nWorkshop on Data Visualization Activities to Facilitate Learning\, Reflecting – Monday Oct. 26\, 2020\nThis workshop focuses on data-visualization activities\, especially methods and challenges for teaching and engaging with data visualization concepts\, knowledge\, and practices.\n  \nFor example\, sketching aids designers to consider alternative ideas; manipulating tokens help students conceptualize quantities for data visualization; user interviews and discussions help developers understand requirements. Workshops\, classes\, or collaborations with domain experts\, often include hands-on data visualization activities that involve analog or digital tools and materials and more or less well defined protocols. Recent years have seen the emergence of such data visualization activities in different contexts\, including education\, visualization design\, activism\, self-reflection\, and interdisciplinary collaboration. However\, the broad range of contexts and target audiences that Data-Vis activities have been applied to makes it difficult to collect and identify commonalities and build knowledge in a systematic way. Thus\, the goals of this workshop are i) start building an understanding and to synthesize protocols and materials used to lead data vis activities\, ii) to bring together researchers\, practitioners\, and educators from within and outside of the visualization community\, iii) brainstorm\, design\, experience\, and try novel activities\, and to iv) discuss issues around goals\, methods\, audiences\, materials\, and evaluation for teaching data visualization. \n\nSamuel Huron\, Télécom Paris\nBenjamin Bach\, University of Edinburgh\nUta Hinrichs\, University of St Andrews\nJonathan C. SUMMARY:Séminaire Invités du CSI : Frédéric Keck Anthropologue\, Directeur de recherche CNRS
DESCRIPTION:Guest seminar with \nFrédéric Keck \nAnthropologist\, CNRS Research Director \nat Laboratoire d’anthropologie sociale\, Collège de France – CNRS UMR 7130 – EHESS \n  \nLes Sentinelles des pandémies Chasseurs de virus et \nobservateurs d’oiseaux aux frontières de la Chine \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Jean Goizauskas \nPublisher’s presentation: La pandémie est l’un de ces événements catastrophiques qui suscitent une mobilisation mondiale. \nA pandemic is one of these catastrophic events that prompt global mobilization. The emergence of a new coronavirus in China in December 2019 confirmed the cyclical nature of pandemics\, after the “Spanish flu” in 1918\, the “Asian flu” in 1957\, the “Hong Kong flu” in 1968\, Ebola hemorrhagic fever in 1976\, hiv in 1981 and sars in 2003. These events require global health authorities to control risks in order to face the health\, moral\, geopolitical and economic consequences of pandemic crises in a world marked by dramatic transformations in urbanization\, industrial livestock farming\, deforestation and climate change. Animal sentinels\, placed on the front line of the “wars against viruses”\, are valued because they detect emerging infectious diseases through early warning signals. \nLes Sentinelles des pandémies is based on an ethnographic research led in Hong Kong\, Taiwan and Singapore\, three territories bordering China and connected to the rest of the world. The book shows how “virus hunters” and public health officials team up with veterinarians and bird watchers to track the mutation of influenza viruses between wild birds\, domestic poultry and humans. Using the methods of social anthropology\, it describes how pandemic preparedness techniques are transforming human and non-human relationships over the long Anthropocene time span. \nFrédéric Keck\, Les Sentinelles des pandémies. SUMMARY:Codesign lab " tea " with Anne-Françoise Schmidt and Muriel Mambrini-Doudet
DESCRIPTION:To know everything about what multidisciplinarity means and implies in particular in our design disciplines\, you are invited on Thursday\, November 5th at 4 pm to a special codesign lab “tea”:  \nHere https://join.skype.com/oGfAdam23bmI \nAnne-Françoise Schmidt epistemologist and philosopher of science and Muriel Mambrini-Doudet research director at the lINRAE we will present their book published by Kimé: Epistémologie Générique.  \nThis book shows what makes “science” outside disciplinary organizations. Our ability to characterize what is produced outside of academic disciplines is limited. Interdisciplinary initiatives are multiplying but remain difficult to transmit because they are based on the “intuition” of the instigators and the sum of “little things” that do not fit into the classical epistemological framework. It is the extension of the latter that this manual\, written “à quatre mains” by the philosopher Anne-Françoise Schmid and the biologist Muriel Mambrini-Doudet on the basis of more than ten years of joint research\, aims to extend. As the work progresses\, the components of interdisciplinary science and its conditions appear. In these new places and objects of science\, ethics is not set aside. Nothing in this book is “given”\, it does not rely on a historical trajectory\, nor on examples\, so as not to limit the desire to explore and recognize the value of experience in itself. On the other hand\, the book is full of exercises (thought experiments\, real-life experiences\, visibility experiments\, practice notebooks\, experimental proposals)\, to “give a hand” to those who want to multiply “common spaces of science”. This book is intended for academics or not\, scientists or not\, acting for a collective conception of our future world. \n

SUMMARY:CRFJ Study Day (CNRS-MEAE)
DESCRIPTION:Human-robot interactions \nMonday\, December 7\, 2020 (13h – 18h Paris time) – in French language \nZoom link: contact jeinteractionshumainsrobots@gmail.com \nPresentation: \nVoice assistants\, text chatbots\, humanoid robots: the increasing diffusion of conversational agents in society fascinates\, frightens\, and raises philosophical\, ethical\, legal\, technical\, and political questions. Present through a diversity of artefacts\, these technological arrangements are capable of producing words or writings during interactions with human beings and of simulating human skills\, social roles or forms of social relations. How do we interact with artificial agents? How do people interact with artificial agents? What relationships do people develop with these talking machines? What meaning and place do these machines have in our daily lives? How do they reconfigure our activities at home\, at work\, in the public space? How do they affect us and what forms of attachment can they provoke? How can we think about the social consequences of such a diversity of both technological forms and situations in which conversational artificial intelligence comes into play? It is to these questions that this study day will attempt to provide some answers\, by bringing together the authors of issue 220-221 of the journal Réseaux\, and by discussing their empirical work on interactions with intelligent agents\, whether they are rooted in ethnomethodology\, conversational analysis\, video-ethnography\, interactional linguistics\, economic sociology or social anthropology. \nProgram: \n13h-13h15 (Paris time) \nIntroduction by Vincent Lemire (CRFJ Director) and Claude Rosental (CNRS-CRFJ) \n-13h15-14h15: \nJulia Velkovska (Orange Labs/SENSE)\, Marc Relieu (Télécom Paris\, Institut polytechnique de Paris\, I3 CNRS): Why ethnographize interactions with conversational agents? \nJustine Cassell (INRIAParis\, PRAIRIE & Carnegie Mellon University): Weaving links. SUMMARY:Guest seminar with Claude Rosental Sociologist\, Research Director at CNRS
DESCRIPTION:Guest seminar with \nClaude Rosental \nSociologist\, Research Director at CNRS \nCentre d’Étude des Mouvements Sociaux (CNRS-EHESS)\, Paris \n  \nLa société de démonstration \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Carole-Anne Tisserand \nBack cover: Démos de Steve Jobs pour le lancement de produits Apple\, démonstrations de force lors de grandes manifestations\, ou encore preuves de l’existence d’armes de destruction massive en Irak à l’ONU : les démonstrations publiques sont omniprésentes dans la vie sociale et leurs enjeux tant politiques qu’économiques sont considérables. \nDemos by Steve Jobs for the launch of Apple products\, demonstrations of power during large events\, or evidence of the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq at the UN: public demonstrations are omnipresent in social life and their stakes\, both political and economic\, are considerable. However\, these phenomena are often regarded as isolated\, even anecdotal events\, and therefore not worthy of systematic examination. In a reversal of perspective\, this book analyses in detail the processes during which demonstrations are conceived and deployed in public\, as well as the multiple skills of their authors. The study is based on a large number of survey results carried out in various spaces (e.g. fairs\, computer fairs\, companies\, streets)\, both in the contemporary period and throughout history. Claude Rosental shows how public demonstrations are not only proof\, conviction and promotion tools\, they are also fundamental forms of interaction and exchange. Beyond the modes of entertainment that they sometimes represent\, demonstrations appear as intense moments that involve to a great extent alliances\, material and symbolic goods\, and more generally the future of individuals and collectives. The book thus sheds light on the ways we are living today\, as we have in the past\, in a demonstration society. \nClaude Rosental\, La Société de démonstration\, Éditions du Croquant\, 2019 \n  \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. SUMMARY:Future of Industry and Labour Chair at Mines-Paris PSL
DESCRIPTION:The Future of Industry and Labor Chair of Mines-Paris PSL is pleased to invite you to the third session of the seminar Autonomy and Responsibility in Organizations. \n\nAutonomy in a SCOP\, the ARDELAINE case \n\nBy Béatrice and Gérard Barras \n(founders of Ardelaine) \nOnly on Zoom\n \nRegistration is mandatory via the following link: https://forms.gle/iCbGrMxX2umYz2z49\n \nIf you have any questions\, please contact: chaire-fit2@mines-paristech.fr \n  \nPresentation of the session: \nA spinning mill of wools in ruins\, fleeces that are thrown away\, a valley with no future\, what to do? In 1975 a group of 7 people with no knowledge on the subject\, took up the challenge and created the SCOP Ardelaine. Today\, this company transforms the wools of 200 breeders (65T/year) and has about sixty employees (2.7 M turnover). The cooperative has developed as a self-taught business\, launching a new project every ten years\, new trades: a wool industry that is as integrated as possible from the shearing of sheep to the direct sale of finished products\, then a museum that has brought 20\,000 people a year to its site\, then a bookstore café\, a restaurant\, a food processing laboratory…thus becoming a multifunctional\, short-circuit “territory cooperative” with stakeholders. 12 professions\, versatility\, no commercial specialization\, seasonality\, flexible mobility in a complex organization chart. A common work at the service of the development of people and this territory for 40 years. \nGérard and Béatrice Barras are among the founders and developers of this adventure. Béatrice has written two books that tell the story of Ardelaine: “Moutons rebelles”\, published by REPAS 2014\, and “Une cité aux mains fertiles”\, published by REPAS 2019 (Prix du livre sur l’économie sociale et solidaire 2020)\, which tells the story of her clothing workshop located in a sensitive urban area. The SCOP was also the subject of a case study written by Elisabeth Bourguinat and available on the ARO platform. \nPresentation of the seminar: \nThe Future Chair of Industry and Labor of Mines – Paris Sciences et Lettres organizes a monthly seminar on the rise of autonomy in organizations. The objective of this seminar is to discuss concrete experiences of setting up an organization that favors employee autonomy by analyzing the difficulties encountered\, the impact on operational performance and employee satisfaction\, the construction of “words to say it” … During the first year\, we will focus on companies where different national or professional traditions coexist and on the support of middle management. \n  \n\n\n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Conference-Debate on Public Policies for Energy Renovation
DESCRIPTION:As part of its applied economics research program on energy efficiency\, CERNA is organizing a seminar on public policies to support energy renovation. \n2021 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for energy renovation policies: launch of a new version of MaPrimeRénov’\, definition of the objectives of the Energy Saving Certificates system\, debate on the proposals of the Citizen’s Convention on Climate Change\, and so on.  Energy renovation is at the heart of the recovery plan. What can we expect from these developments? Do they mark a real break with the policies pursued over the last 20 years?  Will they lead to an industrialization of energy renovation? Will global renovation succeed? These questions and others will be addressed during this conference-debate. \nTo discuss these different questions\, this seminar brings together economists\, industrialists\, and activists from the energy renovation sector: \n\nMarc Benayoun\, Executive Director of the EDF Group in charge of the Customers\, Services and Territories Division\nMatthieu Glachant\, Professor of Economics at MINES ParisTech and Director of CERNA\nOlivier Sidler\, spokesman for NegaWatt\nFrédéric Utzmann\, president and co-founder of EFFY\n\nThe link to register: https://mines-paristech.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f7df200d5ca4e43da8844114a&id=e56b812c0d&e=8ef5396f99 \n
