SUMMARY:The CSI welcomes Ute Tellmann (Technische Universität Darmstadt)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI welcomes \nUte Tellmann \nProfessor of Sociology at theTechnische Universität Darmstadt \n  \nfor a seminar on her work on \nFinancialization and Assetization as a Politics of Property \n \n  \n\nThe seminar will be held in English. \nIn the debates on financialization and assetization\, property is often referred to as an important aspect of the delineation\, disentangling\, valuing and claiming of assets. Yet\, it often assumes the role of a background condition and is rarely made into a key term for in the analysis itself. While many economic categories\, such as value\, futurity or capitalization\, have been innovatively adapted to the contemporary financial constitution\, property has not been taken up in this effort of rethinking finance and economy to the same extent. This paper puts property to the test. Based on a case study on the financialization of rental housing\, it develops a “pragmatics of property” for financialization and assetization. The paper contends that a recalibrated notion of property improves our understanding of the politics of financialization and assetization. \n  \nContact: Liliana Doganova \n  \nPhoto source : Ute Telleman\, TU Darmstadt \n

SUMMARY:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’
DESCRIPTION:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’\nsession #10 \nWhat vegetation does to buildings \n  \nwith Antoine Guibourgé\, Commercial Director\, Exceptional Gardens\, Mugo \n  \nFrom design to completion\, architectural practice is an exercise in mastering and compromise. Navigating the intricacies of rules and constraints\, planning and anticipating (ageing\, vulnerabilities\, risks)\, and exercising control over every detail\, all demand attention and expertise directed towards the production of an object that conforms to the blueprint and is built to last. \nThese ‘thorny negotiations’ (Latour\, Yaneva\, 2008) become particularly salient when buildings are combined with a plant substrate. While greening increasingly seems to be an essential means of adapting architecture to the new climate regime\, it poses challenges for buildings at every stage\, from design to maintenance\, by introducing a living element that has long been excluded from the project. \nThis session explores the changes brought about by this tension: what place are we willing to give to plants and the various forms of interdependence they reveal? How can we agree on what to maintain\, what to let happen and what to make last?  \n  \nDate: Friday February 6\, 2026\, 10 am –1 pm \nVenue: Agence SCAU\, 35 rue Tournefort\, 75005 Paris \nParticipation is free but registration is required. Please register here. \nAttendance is limited. Kindly let us know if you are unable to attend. \nThe seminar will be held in French. \n  \n  \n\nOrganized by architectural agency SCAU and Jérôme Denis.\nFind out more about the seminar program and objectives \n

SUMMARY:2nd Academic Day Mission-Driven Companies: Theories and Practices
DESCRIPTION:2nd Academic Day \nMission-Driven Companies: Theories and Practices\n  \nFollowing the first study day on “Mission-Driven Companies: Theory & Practice\,” which brought together numerous researchers involved in observing\, experimenting with\, or developing the mission-driven company model in January 2024\, we are pleased to invite you to attend the second edition of this research day on mission-driven companies. \nSince day one\, the number of mission-driven companies has exceeded 2\,000. And as the movement expands\, new questions arise. Beyond the dynamics of adoption\, studying the concrete effects of mission-driven companies raises questions about how missions are managed and monitored\, whether by researchers or consultants\, or by companies themselves. How are the legal tools of mission-driven companies received and mobilized? And how do stakeholders\, employees\, unions\, local communities\, and environmental advocates learn or could learn to better use these tools to steer ecological and just transitions? What roles can researchers play in these transformations? At the institutional level\, how does the case of mission-driven companies play into debates on public policies capable of making companies more accountable and promoting transitions? And what are the implications of debates on new legal forms of enterprise at the European level for the French framework? This second day will aim to continue the conversation\, share work in progress\, and nurture an interdisciplinary research community on mission-driven companies. \n  \nUpload the  programme_Evènement 27janvier2026_ \n  \nTo register\, click here (both in-person and remote participation are possible). \n  \nEvent organized by the Scientific Council of the Community of Mission-Driven Companies \n

SUMMARY:Cultural Exception? Cerna seminar: The Impact of Price Regulation on Prices and Variety in the Market for Books
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that Christos Genakos (Cambridge) will be the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. The seminar will take place Wednesday\, January 21\, 2026 at 4 PM in Salle Vendome. \n  \nChristos will present his paper: \n  \nCultural Exception? The Impact of Price Regulation on Prices and Variety in the Market for Books \n(joint work with Mario Pagliero\, Lorien Sabatino and Tommaso Valletti) \n  \nFixed Book Price (FBP) agreements are a form of resale price maintenance aimed at promoting book variety by restricting retail price competition. Using a comprehensive dataset on the Italian book market before and after FBP implementation\, we find that FBP raises prices but does not significantly impact the number of new titles published. However\, it increases the variety of books purchased\, particularly from independent bookstores. A structural demand model reveals that consumers benefit overall due to improved service quality. Additional evidence suggests FBP shifts competition from price to service\, offering insights for resale price maintenance policies. \nThere will be an opportunity to schedule individual meetings and/or join lunch/dinner with Christos before the seminar. \nPlease enter your preferred time slot here.

SUMMARY:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nSéminaire ‘Maintenir. Architecture et maintenance\, ce qui nous tient’ \nMaintain more\, repair less? From words to action \n  \nWith Julien Le Mener\, CEO of AUXIGENE \n  \n  \nWhile transition policies emphasize the importance of renovation and transformation for building sustainability\, might this perspective overlook the fact that a building requires maintenance regardless of any performative actions related to the project and investment expenditure? \nFor this 9th session\, Julien Le Mener\, CEO of AUXIGENE\, a company specializing in multi-technical maintenance\, will address the issue of sustainability\, contrasting its acuteness with the invisibility of maintenance professionals’ forms and areas of intervention. \nTertiary decrees\, BACS decrees\, ECDs… What place do these regulatory measures\, which make performance the driving force behind action and the focus of attention\, leave for those who are concerned with maintaining and sustaining buildings daily? This session will give us the opportunity to discuss the idea of maintaining what is valuable and the valuation processes involving all stakeholders\, including occupants. \n\n \n  \nDate: Friday\, January 16\, 2026\, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. \nVenue: Mines Paris – PSL\, 60 bd Saint-Michel\, 75006 Paris. SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Jean-Noël Jouzel (CSO) and Giovanni Prete (IRIS)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nJean-Noël Jouzel (CSO) and Giovanni Prete (IRIS) \n  \nto discuss their book \nL’agriculture empoisonnée \nLe long combat des victimes des pesticides \n  \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Isaac Bariller (second speaker tbc) \nQuatrième de couverture : Ce livre\, fruit d’une enquête menée pendant plus de dix ans\, raconte le difficile cheminement des exploitants agricoles pour se dire victime et obtenir réparation. \nPoisoned agriculture. The long struggle of pesticide victims \nOn 19 March 2011\, a dozen farmers gathered in Ruffec. They were welcomed at the grain farm of Paul François\, who developed neurological disorders seven years earlier after being poisoned by herbicides. The other farmers present were also suffering from serious chronic conditions. On that day\, Phyto-Victimes\, France’s first association of farmers affected by pesticides\, was formed. These farmers\, who are part of an agricultural system based on the extensive use of phytosanitary products\, were not predisposed to engage in such collective action. The result of an investigation spanning more than ten years\, this book recounts the difficult journey farmers have taken to assert their status as victims and secure compensation. It emphasizes the pivotal role of close family members and the importance of objective allies in mobilization\, ranging from physicians and union leaders to environmental activists\, lawyers\, journalists\, and scientists from backgrounds often worlds apart. This story\, which is both personal and political\, illustrates the long-term effects of intensive agriculture\, a practice that remains dominant today. \nJean-Noël Jouzel is a CNRS Research Director at the Centre for the Sociology of Organisations (CSO). His research focuses on controversies related to environmental health and occupational health issues\, from a perspective that combines science studies\, the sociology of public action\, and the sociology of social movements. His research contributes to the current surge in studies on the social construction of ignorance. \nGiovanni Prete is a lecturer at Sorbonne Paris Nord University and a researcher at IRIS. His research focuses on the social and political issues surrounding occupational and environmental health. In particular\, he studies mobilizations at individual and collective levels to raise awareness of the link between environmental and occupational exposure and health problems in various sectors\, especially agriculture. He is interested in the role of scientific knowledge and how it circulates in different arenas (administrative\, judicial and scientific)\, as well as how law is used in mobilizations. \nJean-Noël Jouzel et Giovanni Prete\, L’agriculture empoisonnée. SUMMARY:Industrial Adventures Seminar
DESCRIPTION:In 1968\, health authorities required Joseph and Simone Bougro\, butchers in Vendée\, to rebuild their laboratory\, which represented a year’s worth of revenue. Forced to grow\, they developed prepared meals\, which were so successful that they created Sodebo in 1973 to move into industrial production. Then their three daughters\, Marie-Laurence\, Patricia\, and Bénédicte\, now co-presidents\, developed the business. Sodebo launched numerous innovations\, diversifying into pasta\, salads\, etc. As variety often creates costly complexity in integrated companies\, specialized factories were created. To bring everything together\, a lean management specialist helped the executives structure the company\, and Margaux Mercier\, a member of the third generation of the founding family\, was involved in this transformation. Sodebo\, a medium-sized company with 3\,000 employees manufacturing more than a million products every day\, is now a benchmark in lean management. \nMandatory registration \nRegistration closes on Tuesday\, December 16\, 2025\, at 12:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’
DESCRIPTION:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’ \nPrescribing and maintaining in public spaces: Challenges for developers \n  \nA change of scenery for this eighth session as the seminar moves to Coeur Défense to meet with the Paris La Défense teams. Heir to a unique urban form and institutional history\, the developer is also the operator of public spaces that are becoming heritage sites as much as they are being reconfigured. Though not fully embraced\, this form of integrated management has become established as crises\, reinvestments\, and the absence of municipal support have unfolded. \n– How does the developer reconcile his mission to preserve an existing structure that is not just limited to the immutability of infrastructure\, but also forms a composite heritage subject to the ravages of time and constant renewal of its models? \n– How do maintenance considerations influence project owners’ specifications and project design processes? \n– How does the operator’s gaze distract the designer from the illusion of “a world made up of finished\, solid things that are impermeable to change or subsequent intervention” (Pauline Lefebvre\, 2024\, Maintenance et dé-projection) \nOur two speakers\, David Guerra and Damien Oberlé\, will share their experiences to reveal the material fabric of these spaces filled with objects\, and bring into dialogue the temporalities that clash within the depth of the project in a common language where designing\, prescribing\, and maintaining are conjugate with knowing. \nAnd we will have the pleasure of welcoming Daniel Florentin\, a researcher from the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées\, who will kick off the discussion. \n  \nDate: Friday\, December 12\, 2025\, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. \nVenue: Cœur Défense\, Tour B\, 110 Espl. du Général de Gaulle\, 92400 Courbevoie. \n  \nParticipation is free but registration is required. Please register here.\nAttendance is limited. Kindly let us know if you are unable to attend. \nThe seminar will be held in French. \n  \n\nOrganized by architectural agency SCAU and Jérôme Denis.\nFind out more about the seminar program and objectives \n

SUMMARY:Séminaire « Entreprises\, Responsabilités et Civilisations »
DESCRIPTION:  \nLa Chaire Théorie de l’Entreprise a le plaisir de vous inviter à la prochaine séance du séminaire « Entreprises\, Responsabilités et Civilisations »  \n  \n le 11 décembre 2025 \n  \n de 16h à 18h00 \n(version hybride) \nTaming Unicorns: Toward a New Normal of Responsible Entrepreneurship  \nwith Matthew Grimes  \nà \nMines Paris – PSL \n60 Boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 PARIS \nInscription \nAbstract: \nWhile entrepreneurial disruption has proven a source of abundance by way of reforming markets and legacy institutions\, it is also frequently characterized by the displacement of existing professions\, industries\, and livelihoods among other societal and ecological externalities. Prior research has often assumed that such reform and externalities are inevitable and inseparable aspects of entrepreneurial disruption. In this presentation\, however\, I will discuss the institutional foundations which have led to the current configuration of the field of startup activity and the global emphasis on “unicorn startups.” I will subsequently highlight how these institutions might be reoriented toward a “new normal” focused on responsible venture creation\, wherein the reformative aspects of disruption are prioritized while negative externalities are controlled. In doing so\, the discussion will illustrate interdependencies likely to both resist and emerge from such a transition toward responsible entrepreneurship\, while proposing a process of societal-level governance reform needed to address those tensions. The resulting conceptual model contributes to the emerging literature on responsible governance of innovation by shifting the focus toward the systems change needed to overcome institutional-level constraints and transition toward a responsible entrepreneurship ideology. In so doing I also challenge prior theoretical conceptualizations regarding the relationship between disruption and entrepreneurship. \n \n  \nProfessor Grimes is a member of the Organisational Theory and Information Systems subject group at Cambridge Judge Business School\, Academic Co-Director of the Cambridge Judge Entrepreneurship Centre\, and current Deputy Editor at the Academy of Management Journal (formerly Associate Editor). His research interests include entrepreneurship and sustainable development. He examines how individuals and organizations create\, introduce\, and sustain positive social change by way of entrepreneurship by studying both the contextual and individual factors that contribute to innovation and the governance of innovation \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:CERNA Research Seminar with Jeanne Astier (CREST - Polytechnique)\, Geoffrey Barrows (CREST - Polytechnique)\, Raphael Calel (Georgetown U)
DESCRIPTION:Quantifying Climate Damages When Regions Trade: A Structural Gravity Approach \n(joint with Jeanne Astier (CREST – Polytechnique)\, Geoffrey Barrows (CREST – Polytechnique)\, Raphael Calel (Georgetown U) \nThis paper presents a method for estimating treatment effects of local climate shocks when regions trade with each other. Because of spillovers induced by trade flows\, comparing the evolution of outcomes between pre-shock and post-shock periods in regions exposed versus unexposed to local shocks leads to a biased estimate of treatment effect. We model these across-region dependencies using standard assumptions from international trade theory. We use our model-consistent estimation strategy to revisit the literature on the evaluation of impacts from climate change onto country-sector gross output using year-to-year variation in temperature and counterfactual scenarios where the observed warming from 1991 to 2019 would not have occurred or considering future warming predictions. \nThere will be an opportunity to schedule individual meetings and/or join lunch/dinner with Hélène before the seminar. \nPlease enter your preferred time slot here.

SUMMARY:Innovation Management Seminar
DESCRIPTION:  \nWe are pleased to invite you to the December session of the Innovation Management seminar: \n  \nInnovating for humanitarian work: \nthe case of the MSF Foundation \nby \nNicolas MOTTIS \nPresident of the MSF Foundation \nClara NORDON\nExecutive Director of the MSF Foundation \nWednesday\, December 10\, 2025\nfrom  8:45 am sharp to 10:45 am \nMines Paris – 60\, boulevard Saint-Michel\, 75006 Paris \nMédecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is now one of the largest international NGOs\, operating in dozens of countries and employing more than 60\,000 people. The needs encountered in its areas of intervention are immense\, and some raise questions that existing technological solutions do not yet address. The MSF Foundation is a modestly sized organization serving the field\, which acts on two complementary fronts: the development of innovations often based on cutting-edge technologies; and critical reflection by its think tank\, Crash\, which analyzes operational practices and leads sometimes sensitive debates on humanitarian issues. With a decade of experience behind it\, the Foundation is now seeing some of its projects enter the global deployment phase\, both within and outside MSF\, while many others remain at the exploratory stage. This session will illustrate an original model of innovation and discuss its main issues and challenges. \nRegistration \nFree registration–  Registration closes on Tuesday\, December 9\, 2025\, at 3:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Industrial Adventures Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Industrial Adventures Seminar | Tuesday\, December 2\, 2025 – 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.\nMines Paris (60\, boulevard Saint-Michel – Paris) | Remote participation possible \n \n\nWhen two brothers\, founders of a company manufacturing fence posts and panels\, pass it on to two brothers from the next generation\, everything seems to be in order. Despite tough operating conditions\, a shrinking market\, and increasingly unfair foreign competition\, the managerial ingenuity and humanism of the new leaders succeeded in transforming the company into a model of collective performance and resilience\, impressing observers and generating enthusiasm at the École de Paris. But after twenty years of struggle\, the brutal 50% contraction of their market since the start of the war in Ukraine made protection from the commercial court inevitable. Slimmed down but saved\, the company is resuming its development. This session will be an opportunity to reflect on the future of moderate value-added industry in France\, the unspoken aspects of business transfer\, and the mysteries of the bankruptcy ecosystem. \nTo learn more about the Lippi saga\, we invite you to read the reports from previous sessions: \nWrite a true story about the company \n“Lippi: Digital Transformation\, Season 2?” \n\n«Digital Revolution: A User’s Guide»\n« Lippi: Digital Transformation\, Season 2?»\n«Write a true story about the company”\n\nRegistration \nRegistration closes on Monday\, December 1\, 2025\, at 3:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Innovation Management Seminar
DESCRIPTION:After several years of development at the CNAM (Conservatoire national des Arts et Métiers)\, the serious game “Rêves de vélo” (Dreams of Cycling) was launched in May 2025 on the France Université Numérique platform. It takes place at the turn of the 1860s\, during the emergence of the velocipede\, the precursor to the modern bicycle\, with France as the pioneering country. Through an interactive comic strip\, each player takes on the role of three characters with contrasting profiles who experience adventures in a reconstructed historical environment. A serious game does not just simulate reality: it creates situations for experimentation\, decision-making\, and critical thinking\, putting players in the position of innovators. The history of the bicycle allows us to explore the multiple dimensions (technical\, organizational\, economic\, social\, legal\, etc.) of an innovative process. Gilles Garel and Loïc Petitgirard will present the game’s design and how the playful experience can be used to teach innovation. \n  \n  \nInnovation Management seminar Séminaire Management de l’innovation | Wednesday\, November 26\, 2025- 8:45 am – 10:45ma\n Mines Paris (60\, boulevard Saint-Michel – Paris) \nRegistration closes on Tuesday\, November 25\, 2025\, at 3:00 p.m. \nRegistration

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Léo Magnin (LISIS)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nLéo Magnin \n  \nto discuss his book \nLa vie sociale des haies \nEnquête sur l’écologisation des mœurs \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Laure Lavigne Delville and Louison Magro \nQuatrième de couverture : Tandis que le monde devient de moins en moins habitable\, peut-on déceler les indices d’une transformation des manières d’interagir avec l’environnement ? \nAs the world becomes less habitable\, are there signs that we are transforming the way we interact with the environment? Following in the footsteps of Norbert Elias\, who studied the civilization of manners through the lens of the handkerchief\, Léo Magnin explores the ecologization of manners through an unassuming object: the hedge. For if trees and bushes have a well-known biological life\, their eventful social life remains to be discovered.\nHedges were massively destroyed during agricultural modernization after 1945 but are now widely acclaimed as reservoirs of biodiversity\, carbon sinks\, sources of renewable energy\, erosion barriers\, and landscape features. What explains such a reversal? Magnin investigates the traces of hedge requalification\, such as a farmer’s concern about protection\, a planter’s hesitations on his plot\, maintenance costs\, pruning preferences\, scientific hedgerow studies\, digital mapping\, and the surprising politicization by governments and villagers.\nFrom farmyards to ministerial offices\, La Vie sociale des haies (The Social Life of Hedgerows) investigates the various dimensions of the greening process. It outlines the social dynamics that are running out of steam\, continuing\, or reinventing themselves in the face of environmental challenges. Following the maze of hedgerows sheds light on the twists and turns of history that shape the contradictions of our present\, as well as its promising trials and errors. \n\nLéo Magnin is a sociologist and a researcher at the CNRS at LISIS (Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Science\, Innovation\, and Society). The primary focus of his research is on analyzing the control of greening\, addressing how legal categories\, thresholds\, and indicators are negotiated politically\, the unintended effects of environmental monitoring policies\, work activities involving digital tools\, the phenomena that control techniques allow us to see and not see\, as well as the way in which the powers to reward and punish are socially distributed in the agricultural world. He is the author\, with Rémi Rouméas and Robin Basier\, of Polices environnementales sous contraintes\, Éditions Rue D’Ulm\, 2024. \n  \nLéo Magnin\, La vie sociale des haies. SUMMARY:Seminar “Businesses\, Responsibilities\, Civilizations”
DESCRIPTION:  \nSeminar “Businesses\, Responsibilities\, Civilizations”  \nThe Business Theory Chair is pleased to invite you to the next session of the session. \n“Businesses\, Responsibilities\, Civilizations”  \nNovember 20\, 2025 \nfrom 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  \n (hybrid version) \nCorporate responsibility in a context of socialization \nwith Pierre-Yves Gomez \nEconomist\, professor emeritus at emlyon Business School\, founder of the French Institute of Corporate Directors  \nat Mines Paris PSL \n60 boulevard saint Michel \n75006 PARIS \n(Mandatory registration) \nRegistration \nCorporate responsibility \nAbstract: Corporate social and economic responsibility cannot be understood in isolation: it takes on meaning in relation to the socio-political environment that shapes it and to which it contributes. Since the 1970s\, speculative capitalism and the specific social consensus that accompanies it have formed the frame of reference for contemporary businesses. \nAfter analyzing financialization (as a process of valuation) and digitalization (as a technical reference system)\, my work focuses on a third movement that structures this model of capitalism: socialization\, understood as the claim to govern organizations in response to society’s expectations. This lecture will address the origin and content of the concept and its implications for understanding and implementing corporate responsibility today. \nPierre-Yves Gomez is an economist\, professor emeritus at emlyon business school\, founder of the French Institute of Corporate Governance\, and former visiting professor and researcher at London Business School. A specialist in the role of business in society\, he has published some fifteen books on governance\, labor\, and the transformation of capitalism. A columnist for Le Monde newspaper\, he is also a member of several boards of directors and corporate mission committees. \n

SUMMARY:Ulrike Felt\, Guest speaker at the seminar co-organized by CSI and LISIS
DESCRIPTION:The seminar organized by CSI and LISIS welcomes \nUlrike Felt \nDepartment of Science and Technology Studies\, University of Vienna \nto discuss her book \nAcademic Times \nContesting the Chronopolitics of Research \n  \n \nDiscussants: Lucas Brunet (LISIS) and Didier Torny (CSI) \n  \nAbout this book\nThis open access bookexplores the hidden politics of time—the chronopolitics—that profoundly shapes the contours of academic life and knowledge production in contemporary universities. Moving beyond familiar critiques of academic acceleration\, Ulrike Felt explores the diversity of time generators and the resultant complex\, multilayered timescapes that govern scholarly work and life. The book examines the tensions inherent in models of linear careers and in simultaneous experiences of speed and waiting\, and asks questions about the ownership of time. In doing so\, it scrutinizes relations between time and quality\, and points to the impact of time on how and what we can know\, revealing how these temporal regimes create deep asynchronicities and fragmentations and perpetuate injustices and exclusions. Arguing for a more mindful approach to research\, Felt advocates for rethinking academia through the lens of time\, emphasizing the need for temporal care work in order to achieve sustainable and responsible change. Aimed at researchers\, academic leaders\, and policymakers\, the book offers a compelling vision for a more responsive\, long-term\, and equitable academic future—one that challenges neoliberal models that prioritise speed\, competitiveness\, and efficiency. \nUlrike Felt\, Academic Times: Contesting the Chronopolitics of Research\, Palgrave Macmillan\, 2025. SUMMARY:Séminaire ‘Maintenir. Architecture et maintenance\, ce qui nous tient’
DESCRIPTION:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’ \nBuilding and maintaining in the bioclimatic era – Feedback \nwith Nolwenn Bordron\, architect at the Department of\nPublic Constructions and Architecture (DCPA) of the City of Paris \n  \n\nFrom innovative building techniques to reinterpreted traditional skills\, bioclimatic design and the use of organic or geosourced materials are part of a significant shift in architectural practices\, attempting to overcome the limitations of strict regulations and industrial production logic. The plurality of terms—frugal\, low-tech\, sustainable\, passive\, and eco-responsible—reflects the diversity of approaches and their experimental dimension. Each approach offers a new perspective and way of doing things in a finite world. \nIn this seventh session\, the seminar will give the floor to a public project owner\, the City of Paris\, to discuss the changes brought about by these design approaches from the perspective of the operator responsible for maintaining structures whose sustainability is measured in terms of planetary limits and material conditions for long-term preservation. \nFrom attention to materials to consideration of conditions of use and adjustments to equipment\, how are maintenance activities being redeployed in an architecture that seeks to protect both the environment and humans? How can maintenance workers’ expertise be accounted for when it largely escapes the normative and creative processes that punctuate design? This pivotal session examines different approaches to making building last and explores the links between architecture and maintenance through the lens of the relationship between the built environment and its surroundings. \n  \n  \n  \n\nDate: Friday\, November 14\, 2025\, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. \nVenue: École des Mines\, 60 Boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006. Room Vendôme \n  \nParticipation is free but registration is required. Please register here.\nAttendance is limited. Kindly let us know if you are unable to attend. \nThe seminar will be held in French. \n  \n\nOrganized by architectural agency SCAU and Jérôme Denis.\nFind out more about the seminar program and objectives \n

SUMMARY:The Business Theory Chair is pleased to invite you to the next session of the seminar “Businesses\, Responsibilities\, and Civilizations.”
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Business Theory Chair is pleased to invite you to the next session of the seminar “Businesses\, Responsibilities\, and Civilizations.” \nNovember 25\,  2025 \nfrom 4pm to 6pm (hybrid version) \nTaming Corporate Power in the 21th century \nwith Jerry Davis \nProfessor of Business Administration \nand Professor of Sociology at University of Michigan \nMines Paris PSL 75006 PARIS \n  \nRegistration \n  \nSummary: There is broad consensus in the US that monopolistic corporations have grown too powerful and that we need to revive antitrust to take on the “curse of bigness.” But information and communication technologies have fundamentally altered the operations of our economy in ways that undermine the basic categories we use to understand it. Nationality\, industry\, firm\, size\, employee\, and other fundamental terms are increasingly perplexing. If we want to understand and tame the new sources of economic power\, we need a new diagnosis and a new set of tools. This talk will describe the forces shaping corporate power in America today\, and where we might go next \nBio:  Jerry Davis received his PhD from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and taught at Northwestern and Columbia before moving to the University of Michigan\, where he is the Gilbert and Ruth Whitaker Professor of Business Administration and Professor of Sociology. He writes about corporate power\, the threats to democracy posed by Big Tech\, and the possibilities for alternative forms of enterprise that are more humane and democratic. \n

SUMMARY:CERNA Research Seminar will welcome Annika Herr (Hannover)
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that Annika Herr (Hannover) will be the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. The seminar will take place Octobre 29\, 2025 at 4 PM in Salle Chevalier. \nAnnika will present her paper: \nMarket Concentration and Prescribing Behaviour in Primary Care” (NHS England\, with Nils Gutacker and David Probst) \nA significant proportion of primary care expenditures arise from the prescription of drugs\, with physicians having some degree of autonomy in deciding whether and which drug to choose for a particular patient. While medical reasons and guidelines primarily influence these decisions\, economic factors may also play a role. Given the ongoing trend of practice mergers or closures in the English NHS over several decades\, we investigate the per-patient prescribing volume and costs in increasingly concentrated markets. We employ quarterly data from 2015 to 2019 for 7\,300 practices in the English national health system. Concentration is evaluated using a population-weighted Herfindahl-Hirschman Index that is based on predicted patient flows rather than observed ones to address endogeneity concerns. Our findings suggest that greater market concentration leads to a reduction in total drug prescriptions and their associated costs\, particularly for generics and over-the-counter drugs. However\, the concentration effect does not appear to influence primary care prescriptions for insulin. Therefore\, the impact is more significant for drugs that allow GPs greater discretion in their prescribing behavior. \nThere will be an opportunity to schedule individual meetings and/or join lunch/dinner with Annika before the seminar. \nPlease enter your preferred time slot here

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Jeanne Ételain (École supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nJeanne Ételain \nto discuss her book \nZones \nTerre\, sexes et science-fiction \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Lou Stührenberg and Laurine Lièvremont \nQuatrième de couverture : Zone : ce terme omniprésent reste pourtant insaisissable. \nZone: A ubiquitous term\, yet one that remains elusive. In a surprising conceptual investigation at the crossroads of geography\, psychoanalysis\, and science fiction\, Jeanne Etelain explores how the “zone” has become central to understanding space in the contemporary context of the planet’s habitability crisis. The zone appears as a spatial modality that defies usual categories and confronts us with the power of space\, whether it be nature\, the Earth\, or the body. \nJeanne Ételain\, Zones. Terre\, sexes et science-fiction. Flammarion\, coll.  Terra Incognita\, 2025 \nJeanne Etelain teaches philosophy and contemporary theory at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier. She is also an associate researcher at the HAR (History of Arts and Representations) laboratory at Paris Nanterre University. SUMMARY:Cerna Research seminar will welcome Nick de Roos (Liverpool)
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that Nick de Roos (Liverpool) will be the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. The seminar will take place Wednesday\, October 15\, 2025 at 4 PM in Salle des Colonnes. \n\nNick will present his paper: \nNegotiating Coordination: A Study in Retail Gasoline \nSince antitrust laws prohibit direct communications between competitors\, firms often must infer from observed behavior in the marketplace how rivals will respond to various scenarios (and what rivals believe about how others will respond). A substantial theoretical and experimental literature has examined how agents facing strategic uncertainty reach equilibrium through complex interactive learning processes. However\, empirical research into the impacts of strategic uncertainty on firm behavior and market performance is virtually nonexistent. This paper studies the use of market prices in coordinating and renegotiating market outcomes absent direct communication. We examine a gradual\, sometimes disruptive\, equilibrium transition using a unique dataset of daily and hourly station-level prices from an urban gasoline market. Using an information-sharing platform to observe rivals’ prices\, the firms transition over seven years from coordinated focal pricing rules to a structure involving price leadership. Along the path\, firms appear to engage in various forms of experimentation\, signaling\, and manipulation (of rivals’ expectations) that strongly resemble behavior expected under strategic uncertainty. We observe recurrent deviations from focal pricing rules that entail substantial price undercutting and business stealing without immediate punishment. We also uncover a price war involving renegotiation\, punishments\, and resolution strictly through prices. Lastly\, we document how\, absent direct communication\, firms can actively modify their coordinated pricing structure to limit rivals’ incentives to deviate or undercut\, enabling greater long-run stability and higher prices. Overall\, our findings establish that prices can yield a sufficiently rich communication medium for implementing and renegotiating coordinated pricing structures\, but doing so requires firms to overcome significant strategic uncertainty. We discuss implications for theories of collusion and for policies aimed at detecting and prosecuting cartels. \n

SUMMARY:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’
DESCRIPTION:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’ \nAttachments and heritage: figures from the ACMH \n  \nWhen it comes to heritage\, in France the “chief architect” is like a caretaker at the bedside of a living\, changing\, aging structure. \nWhat determines value? Who will maintain it? Confronted with the obsolescence of materials and the accumulation of layers of time\, conservation must contend with the living. Maintaining heritage invites us to compose with the intertwining of our fragilities. \nBetween care and attachment\, the next session of the Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about seminar will explore the links between architecture and maintenance through the practice of two heritage architects\, Charlotte Langlois\, heritage architect and co-managing partner of the Point 05 agency\, and Pierre Dufour\, chief architect of historic monuments and co-managing partner of the Antoine Dufour Architectes agency. \n  \n\nDate: Friday\, October 10\, 2025\, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. \nVenue: SCAU – 35 rue Tournefort\, Paris 5e \n  \nParticipation is free but registration is required. Please register here.\nAttendance is limited. Kindly let us know if you are unable to attend. \nThe seminar will be held in French. \n  \n  \nOrganized by architectural agency SCAU and Jérôme Denis.\nFind out more about the seminar program and objectives.

SUMMARY:Industrial Adventures seminar
DESCRIPTION:A graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in physics\, then a PhD from Stanford\, Hervé Le Lous took over a discreet subsidiary of the Fournier group\, founded by his father\, with the ambition of making it a leader in supermarket parapharmacy. He launched it into food supplements\, and met with success\, notably with Juvamine. On the death of his father\, he took over the management of the Group\, sold Laboratoires Fournier and focused on Laboratoires URGO: wound dressings seemed to him to represent considerable potential\, provided he continued to produce the very best. Today\, this adventure has led to a world leader with 3\,500 employees. Passionate about teaching\, convinced that capitalism and humanism feed off each other\, he developed methods for creating\, growing\, managing\, deciding\, managing relationships and negotiating\, methods which he passed on to his employees and which he recorded in a book when he handed over the reins of the Group to his children. \n  \nRegistration \nFree registration –  Registration closes on Tuesday\, September 16\, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. \n  \n
