SUMMARY:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’
DESCRIPTION:Insurance and Maintenance:\n \nfrom vanishing line to breaking point\n \n  \n\nThe focus of this third session is on the expert and the insurer. The session will provide an opportunity for the crossing of narratives and for a shifting of the gaze of practitioners as well as researchers.\n \nGuest speakers: \nLudovic Patouret\, expert engineer / cabinet GECAMEX (technical and financial construction litigation) \nMichel Klein\, Deputy General Manager\, Mutuelle des Architectes Français assurances (MAF) \n  \n\nWhen it comes to architectural structures\, insurance is probably more self-evident than maintenance. What does this preference tell us? \nInsurance is an intransitive response to the client’s dual demand for zero risk and zero maintenance. It shapes our perception of reality (Anne Dufourmantelle\, 2014\, Eloge du risque). Like a translucent\, protective film affixed to the envelope when the building is handed over to the client\, the ten-year and structural damage insurance policies — unwittingly — contribute to making maintenance invisible and masking the need for it. \nBy mapping the contours of risk and operating within its boundaries\, the insurance mechanism renders the future predictable in mathematical terms: insurance creates a horizon and defines a territory\, providing the exposed activity of the architect with relative stability and a secure playground in an uncertain\, ever-changing world. \nMaintenance\, on the other hand\, remains outside the realm of design. It belongs to the realms of the unforeseeable and the invisible. It blurs the contours and disturbs the horizon that is projected onto the structure. Maintenance lifts the veil to reveal\, in an imprecise chiaroscuro\, the materiality of risk and the possibility of breaking points beyond probabilistic vanishing lines. \nAssigned by the insurer to confront the test of reality\, to investigate\, analyze and formulate hypotheses of causality\, the expert undoubtedly shares with the maintainer the same sensitive experience of the building’s otherness\, a way of approaching structures in a singular dialogue with materials and technical arrangements. By stepping into the fold of techniques (B. Latour\, 2011)\, the expert becomes both the witness of any form of alteration to the structure and the interpreter of the relationships woven around it\, unfolding the mechanisms of attribution\, regulation and organization put in place as the structure shapes its own mode of existence. \n\nParticipation is free but registration is required. Please register here. \nAttendance is limited. Kindly let us know if you are unable to attend. \nThe seminar will be held in French. \n\nOrganized by architectural agency SCAU and Jérôme Denis.\nLearn more about the seminar’s objectives. \n \nPhoto : Wim Wenders\, Perfect days\, 2023\, Master Mind.

SUMMARY:Cerna seminar will welcome Leonard Treuren (KU Leuven)
DESCRIPTION:Wage markups and buyer power in intermediate input markets \n  \nHow are imperfections in different input markets related? I show how to estimate the wedge between an input’s price and its marginal revenue product using financial statements without requiring any input market to be perfectly competitive\, and apply this approach to Dutch manufacturing. Firms mark down intermediate input prices relative to their marginal revenue product\, while both wage markups and wage markdowns are common in labor markets. A model where firms face upward sloping supply curves in both input markets\, and collective bargaining determines wages\, can rationalize these findings\, but not a model that only allows for imperfections in a single input market. In line with this rent-sharing framework\, I show that as the Euro appreciates\, markdowns and rents in the intermediate input market of firms that import intermediates from China increase\, and workers see their wages increase\, even though labor does not become more revenue productive on average or on the margin.   \nWage_markups25 Paper  \nThere will be an opportunity to schedule individual meetings with Leonard before the seminar. \nPlease enter your preferred time slot here.

SUMMARY:Innovation management
DESCRIPTION:Rolex has dominated the world watch market for over fifty years. The advent of electronics\, globalization and the arrival of luxury conglomerates have had a considerable impact on the watch industry over the last half-century\, but Rolex’s leadership has remained unchanged. How can we explain this impressive success? Is it necessary to innovate in order to persist? Based on Swiss\, American and British archives\, a recent study* has shed light on the conditions of Rolex’s enduring multi-dimensional exceptionalism. The meeting of Swiss industrial genius (mass-producing top-quality watches) and American marketing genius (creating a discourse on the excellence of Rolex-wearing personalities) is at the root of this success. Pierre-Yves Donzé will discuss the adoption of a new strategy in the 1960s\, and what made it possible to maintain it to the present day. \nRegistration \nRegistration closes on June 10 at 3pm. \n\n\n* Pierre-Yves Donzé\, La Fabrique de l’excellence – Histoire de Rolex (Alphil\, 2024)

SUMMARY:Next session of the Aventures Industrielles seminar
DESCRIPTION:In 2001\, Nicolas Chartier and Guillaume Paoli came up with an idea for a start-up: to sell cars online\, starting with cheaper 0 km vehicles purchased from dealers with overstocks. With initial success\, they set about removing the irritants for buyers: taking care of administrative formalities\, arranging credit\, taking back the customer’s car\, customized delivery\, etc. They then have to set up agencies\, a car reconditioning plant\, and solve routing and delivery problems. They are faced with formidable technical\, logistical and administrative problems. To overcome them\, sometimes at the cost of severe crises\, they discovered the virtues of sharing decisions and initiatives with their staff\, and the often overlooked benefits of Lean management. In this way\, the idea of a two-person start-up was gradually transformed into an astonishing collective adventure. \nFree registration–  Closing date: Wednesday\, June 4\, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. \nFor more information \n

SUMMARY:TTI.5 Award for the Best Case Study of an Environmental Controversy from the course ‘Description of controversies’
DESCRIPTION:TTI.5 Award for the best case study of an environmental controversy\nfrom the course ‘Description of controversies’ \n  \n\nTTI.5 The Transition Institute 1.5  is organizing its third annual forum\, entitled “Taking Inspiration from Nature: What Perspectives for Transition?” \n \nRegistration for the 3rd TTI.5 Forum is required. Please register here.\nDownload the full program. \nFor its 3rd edition\, and as part of the course entitled “Description de controverses” [Description of controversies] coordinated by Madeleine Akrich (CSI-i3 – Mines Paris-PSL)\, who will introduce this session\, the TTI.5 Environmental Controversy Prize will reward the best case study of an environmental controversy carried out by students in the Civil Engineering Program at Mines Paris-PSL. \nThe three case studies nominated for the award were selected based on the highest marks received for the papers and oral presentations. The authors of the three nominated projects will each give a 10-minute presentation on their work. A vote by the public will follow immediately after the presentations. The award will be presented to the winners by Matthieu Mazière\, Director of Studies at Mines Paris – PSL. \nThe environmental controversies explored in the course ‘Description of Controversies’ reflect the CSI-i3’s interest in this field of study\, as part of a body of research and academic activities pertaining to the theme Policies\, instruments and innovations for the ecological transition (Theme C)\, developed within the Interdisciplinary Institute on Innovation (i3). \nThe environmental controversy projects that have been nominated and will be submitted to the vote of the public are: \n\n\n \n\n\nLe recyclage du plastique peut-il tenir ses promesses ?\n[Can plastic recycling live up to its promise?]\nThe group’s work will be presented by Grégoire Leboucher\, Fanny Picamal and Alizée Cinquin. \nThe development of the plastics industry in the 20th century is widely criticized today. The damaging effects of plastic on health and the environment are at issue. Although recycling is presented as a solution to plastic waste\, only a fraction is actually recycled; the rest often ends up in landfills or oceans. The very characteristics that make plastic attractive — its stability and durability — also make it difficult to recycle. The process is often complex and costly and can generate greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Controversial issues include the promise of plastics and recycling technologies\, and the development of alternative materials such as bio-plastics. Read the article \nL’agrivoltaïsme – Photovoltaïque en terre agricole : énergie d’avenir ou menace pour l’agriculture ?\n[Agrivoltaics – Photovoltaics on farmland: energy for the future or a threat to agriculture?] \nThe group’s work will be presented by Alice Machelon\, Astrid Soulas\, Marion Stenta and Théo Takla. \nAgrivoltaic technologies are currently experiencing strong growth. Introduced twenty years ago\, these technologies combine agricultural production and photovoltaic electricity generation on the same site. While they offer the potential to increase the area available for renewable energy production\, they also raise a number of questions. Which crops are compatible with these infrastructures? Will this lead to a de facto reduction in arable land? Economic questions also arise. What is the profitability of these installations? What consequences might the entry of energy companies into this sector have on farmland prices? Ultimately\, will agrivoltaics enable the combination of energy and agricultural production? Read the article \nCohabiter avec les rats – Une relation ambivalente ?\n[Cohabiting with rats – An ambivalent relationship?] \nThe group’s work will be presented by Augustin Le Corre\, Piero Jaime Hinostroza\, and Lilia Ben Mariem. \nGarbage collectors on strike\, large-scale works underway in the run-up to the Olympic Games… and the presence of rats in cities is back in the spotlight. Some consider them pests to be eradicated\, while others consider them contributors to biodiversity. Either way\, rats have become a subject of public debate\, mobilizing elected representatives\, citizens\, doctors\, and ecologists. Their numbers\, the diseases and nuisances they cause\, the methods used to control their proliferation\, their usefulness – everything is a subject of controversy\, and everyone wonders whether we should cohabit with rats. SUMMARY:CERNA Research Seminar will welcome Carlos Serrano
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that Carlos Serrano (HEC Paris) will be the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar.\nThe seminar will take place Tuesday\, May 27\, 2025 at 4 PM in Salle Vendôme.\n\nCarlos will present his paper: \n  \nPatents in Secret: Disclosure Timing in Markets for Technology\n  \nMarkets for technology provide a vibrant channel through which firms purchase ownership rights to patented inventions. Although such transactions enable firms to secure access to intangible assets originating beyond their borders\, they also provide cues to competitors regarding the purchasing firm’s technological investments. This study explores the timing of strategic disclosure of patent acquisitions and the conditions under which firms trade the benefits of competitor deterrence through early recordation for those of secrecy through delayed disclosure. Using evidence on the lag between the execution and recording dates for US patents purchased by publicly traded corporations\, we predict and find earlier disclosure of patent acquisitions when the buyer works on related technologies and is better positioned to enforce the patents (i.e.\, is large and relatively litigious). As predicted by the model\, we also find that the buyer delays disclosure when the seller is a large firm\, suggesting that buyers take advantage of the seller’s ability to deter competitors while keeping the transaction secret. Additional analyses reveal that (a) regulatory changes reducing the value of keeping acquisitions of patent applications secret lead to shorter recording lags\, and (b) increases in the enforceability of business method and software patents further accelerate the voluntary recording of patent ownership changes. The study provides new evidence on the tradeoffs that innovating firms face when determining the timing of disclosure for patents they have purchased in technology markets.  \n  \nThere will be an opportunity to schedule individual meetings with Carlos before the seminar. \nPlease enter your preferred time slot here \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Nelo Magalhaes (CRH-EHESS)
\nAccumulating concrete\, tracing roads. An environmental history of major infrastructures \nIn the post-war decades\, thousands of kilometers of roads and highways were built to support the intensification of traffic\, connecting metropolises with industrial zones\, ports\, airports\, power plants\, and tourist resorts across reclaimed agricultural landscapes. This was the beginning of a “Great Acceleration” that turned the production of space on its head. On construction sites\, concrete flowed at full speed\, while the noise of machines (which did not go on strike) replaced the tumult of excavation workers. Chemistry and the industrialization of techniques freed construction from the constraints of topography\, climate and geology: the “abstraction” of the ground to make way for roads – and to support the weight of trucks – became a leitmotif of “regional planning”\, requiring the continuous extraction and movement of billions of cubic meters of earth\, sand and aggregate. \nWhile the damage to riverbeds\, quarry environments\, and the atmosphere is rapidly becoming apparent – not to mention the deaths on the roads – the bitumen frenzy has never abated: this infrastructure\, which gobbles up hectares of land and public money\, must be constantly repaired\, thickened\, and expanded. This book provides a remarkable overview of this technical\, economic and political spiral. At a time when the struggle against the road model and the cement industry is multiplying\, it identifies some of the obstacles that make the built environment so burdensome. A prerequisite for thinking about lighter perspectives. \nNelo Magalhães holds a PhD in mathematics and economics. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the CRH (Centre de recherches historiques)\, EHESS – CNRS (UMR 8558). His research focuses on the materiality of capitalism from a perspective that combines political economy and environmental history. \nNelo Magalhaes\, Accumuler du béton\, tracer des routes. SUMMARY:A conversation with Ève Chiapello and Alexandre Violle
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Interdisciplinary Institute on Innovation (i3) and the library of Mines Paris – PSL are hosting a joint event with Ève Chiapello and Alexandre Violle \nÈve Chiapello and Alexandre Violle will be presenting their book Sociologie des circuits financiers. \nAlexandre Mallard\, director of i3\, will moderate the discussion. \nSociology of financial circuits. Money infrastructures and their policies \nHow can money be traced and its role in the formulation and implementation of public policy be accounted for? Using an ambitious conceptual framework\, this book delves into the heart of the material operations and infrastructures of money circulation. \nHow can the injunction to “follow the money” be implemented by the social sciences? How do money circuits both enable and constrain European and national public policies? The sociology of money circuits provides a detailed understanding of the materiality of money circulation\, combining a sociology inspired by the work of Viviana Zelizer and infrastructure studies. A series of empirical case studies illustrate this fruitful approach. The book provides access to the worlds of institutional money\, to the social and political meanings inscribed in IT\, legal and accounting infrastructures\, and to the interdependencies between financial circuits and public policy. The chapters illuminate how the politics of money transforms both the state and capitalism. \nPresses universitaires du Septentrion\, Collection : Capitalismes – éthique – institutions \nEve Chiapello is Professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS\, Paris)\, where she holds the chair of “sociology of the transformations of capitalism”. \nAlexandre Violle holds a Ph.D. in Science\, technology\, and society from the École des Mines de Paris and is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre de sociologie de l’innovation. \n \n\nPlease register here (registration is required).\nLink to access the event on Teams: LIEN\n \n

SUMMARY:Seminar Economic expertise and environmental actions: Critical zone
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes \nSébastien Dutreuil and Jérôme Gaillardet \nCritical zone \n  \nDrawing on the notion of the critical zone\, which originated in the environmental sciences and has been revisited by Bruno Latour in his latest work\, this session will explore transformations in the relationship between science\, society and politics\, as well as in the role of critique and STS\, brought about by the rise and structuring of the sciences of habitability and their infrastructures. The session is organized in liaison with the FORET project supported by the CNRS MITI. \nSébastien Dutreuil (CNRS\, Centre Gilles Gaston Granger)\nHabitability sciences\, the attacks that have targeted them\, and the legacy of STS: How have our conceptions of science and of the role of Critique changed? \nMore than twenty years ago\, Bruno Latour pondered the consequences – for Critique and STS – of the rise of conspiracism and the maintenance of controversy by merchants of doubt. In the current context\, I propose to extend this analysis by focusing on three major historical transformations of the last decades: the transformation of sciences themselves and of their production regime with the rise of habitability sciences (climatology\, ecology\, critical zones\, etc.); the results and achievements of history of science and STS since their constitution; the plurality of attacks on science\, from those of the merchants of doubt to the recent brutal attacks\, especially in the U.S. and Argentina. Analyzed together\, these elements should lead us to redefine not the sciences and their relationship to the public or political power; but also\, in so doing\, the role of Criticism and STS. \nJérôme Gaillardet (Institut de Physique du Globe)\nThe critical zone: for a science more situated and more in interaction with society. \nThe critical zone is the thin habitable veneer of our planet\, the study of which requires us to revisit the scientific contours that have been formed over the past few centuries. To begin with\, we need to redefine naturalistic objects in a way that takes better account of interdependencies\, that is less fixed and more animated by multiple temporalities. This initiative\, born out of the confrontation between the results of laboratory science and observations of the world outside\, also offers the opportunity for a better appropriation of scientific facts by society\, provided that the conditions for this mutual interaction are created. I will discuss how this movement in the sciences came about and illustrate its materialization in the form of observatory networks\, databases\, and predictive models. I will also explore some avenues of research and experimentation that could give real power to this initiative. \n \nJérôme Gaillardet \nis a geochemist specialising in surface processes\, Professor of Earth Sciences at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris and lecturer at Sciences Po Paris. His research focuses on the global role of chemical weathering in the Earth’s chemical engine\, in particular the geochemistry of the sediments transported by rivers and produced by chemical weathering in soils. He is the author of La Terre habitable ou l’épopée de la zone critique (La Découverte\, 2023). \nSébastien Dutreuil is a historian and philosopher of science\, a CNRS researcher and Deputy Director of the Gilles-Gaston-Granger Centre at the University of Aix-Marseille. His main research interests are the history and philosophy of earth and environmental sciences\, and the philosophy of modelling and biology. He is the author of Gaïa\, Terre vivante – Histoire d’une nouvelle conception de la Terre (Les Empêcheurs de penser rond\, 2024). \nInformation and registration\n \n\nThe session will also be streamed by videoconference. SUMMARY:Seminar Digital environmental policies: Aude-Solveig Epstein (Paris Nanterre University)
DESCRIPTION:The seminar ‘Digital environmental policies’ welcomes \nAude-Solveig Epstein \nParis Nanterre University \n  \nLa régulation environnementale du numérique : \nCritique juridique de la “double transition” (twin transition) \nThe environmental regulation of digital technology: a legal critique of the ‘twin transition’] \n \nThe European Union (EU) has recently adopted the “twin transition”—the simultaneous pursuit of digitalization and ecological transformation—as a central tenet of its industrial policy. EU lawmakers assert that digital technologies can enhance environmental protection by optimizing resource use\, improving environmental monitoring\, and enhancing data-driven sustainability initiatives. However\, this optimistic vision of eco-modernization seems to overlook the environmental costs of digitalization\, including increased energy and water consumption\, resource extraction\, and electronic waste. This article critically examines EU legislative efforts within the twin transition framework\, focusing on the role of environmental law in enabling society’s digitalization and reducing nature to mere data. It argues that\, for the twin transition to move beyond a political slogan and yield tangible ecological benefits\, profound legal reforms are essential. Technology regulation must shift away from corporate self-regulation\, and environmental lawmakers must reassess the effectiveness of disclosure-based governance. Additionally\, data governance frameworks should be reoriented to prioritize sustainability and foster democratic environmental decision-making. \nAude-Solveig Epstein is a Senior Lecturer in Private Law at the University of Paris Nanterre. \n \n  \n \n \n\nThe seminar will be held by videoconference. SUMMARY:Seminar Digital environmental policies: Laura Kocksch (Aalborg University Copenhagen)
DESCRIPTION:The seminar ‘Digital environmental policies’ welcomes \n  \nLaura Kocksch \nThe Techno-Anthroplogy Lab at Aalborg University Copenhagen \n  \nFragile computing: \nDirections for developing post-optimistic technologies \n \n  \nOne easily identifies both optimistic and pessimistic stories of digital technologies in science\, policy and public: Some say\, technologies aid development\, help monitor climate change\, are agents of optimisation and efficiency and therefore inevitable to prevent more harm to the planet. Others content\, technologies enforce Northern ideals of progress\, they are heating and energy eating machines\, and humankinds’ reliance on them has rendered us suspectable to various cyber attacks.  \nIn this talk\, I attempt to develop post-optimistic\, yet not pessimistic\, directions for developing digital technologies. Drawing on STS and Environmental Anthropology\, I argue that engineers and social scientist can find inspiration in frugal yet not heroic technological practices. Digital technologies are neither omnipotent dangers\, nor are they cosy companions; they decay\, require attention\, are patched\, insecure\, well-known\, bite back\, are uneasy and remain broken. \nI present two empirical examples: cybersecurity practices in small- and medium-sized companies in Denmark and fibre optic data cable repair on the lithic seabed of the Faroe Islands. The first example unfolds how companies with limited resources and aging technologies handle perpetual attacks and anxiety in one of the most digital countries of the world. The second example engages with digital infrastructures as contested materiality in the North Atlantic\, both an object of security and climatic conditions. \nFragile Computing attends to the pain points of digital technologies: encountering dilemmas between security and sustainability\, robustness and fluidity\, planning ahead and perishing. The outcome is neither naïve hope\, nor depression; it is neither praising the local heroes\, nor shaming incompliance. The outcome are complicated normativities and theories\, fragile in themselves\, responsive to more than one way of creating digital technologies. STS is the place to start this development of post-optimistic\, yet not hopeless\, digital technologies. \n\nLaura Kocksch is Assistant Professor in the Techno-Anthropology Lab of Aalborg University in Copenhagen. She is author of “Fragile Computing – How To Live With Insecure Technologies”\, an ethnographic study of cybersecurity in critical infrastructures. Her current work focuses on digital infrastructure in the warming North Atlantic (Greenland\, Iceland and the Faroe Islands) and cybersecurity in small companies and communities. \n  \n \n \n  \nThe seminar will be held by videoconference. SUMMARY:We are pleased to announce that Clément Malgouyres (CREST) will be the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that Clément Malgouyres (CREST) will be the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. \nClement will present his paper: \nEscaping Labor Scarcity: Innovation and Human Capital after WW1 in France \nWe use quasi-random local variations in the number of young men who died as a result of World War I to estimate the impact of this demographic shock on innovation and structural change in France. Our analysis shows that excess mortality led to an increase in patenting activity in counties with high pre-war education levels\, driven predominantly by innovations in labor-saving technologies. Our estimates imply that an additional 6\,000 patents were filed in the 15 years following the war\, amounting roughly to the average annual number of patents filed pre-war. On the contrary\, we show that the direct death of inventors (as opposed to general mortality) has a negative effect on subsequent patenting activity. We find a positive association between war-related mortality and wage growth as well as with the adoption of machines in the agricultural sector\, providing additional evidence that incentives to escape labor scarcity are driving the innovation response to mortality. \nThere will be an opportunity to schedule individual meetings with Clément before the seminar. \nPlease enter your preferred time slot here

SUMMARY:CERNA Research Seminar will welcome Nicolas Schutz (Mannheim)
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that Nicolas Schutz (Mannheim) will be the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. The seminar will take place on Tuesday\, April 15\, 2025\, at 12 AM in Salle Vendôme. \n\nNicolas will present his paper: \n  \nOligopoly\, Complementarities\, and Transformed Potentials \n(joint with Volker Nocke) \n  \nWe adopt a potential games approach to study multiproduct-firm pricing games where products can be local complements or substitutes. We show that any such game based on an IIA demand system admits an ordinal potential\, giving rise to a simple proof of equilibrium existence. We introduce the concept of transformed potential\, and characterize the class of demand systems that give rise to multiproduct-firm pricing games admitting such a potential\, as well as the associated transformation functions. The resulting demand systems allow for substitutability or complementarity patterns that go beyond IIA\, and can resemble those induced by “one-stop shopping” behavior. \n  \nThe paper Nicolas will present is below in case you want to have a look at it in advance. \nPaper of  Nicolas Schutz-Jan2025 \n

SUMMARY:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’
DESCRIPTION:  \nMaintaining in common: \nco-ownership beyond the infraordinary \n  \nFor this second session entitled ‘Maintaining in common: co-ownership beyond the infraordinary’\, we propose to investigate together the field of housing maintenance by focusing on co-ownership and its actors. \nAs the PUCA (Plan Urbanisme Construction Architecture / Urbanism Construction Architecture Plan) research program points out\, condominiums remain little studied by the social sciences\, even though they represent a third of French housing. Examining the notion of commons through the prism of wear and tear rather than use\, this session explores\, through stories and the figure of the condominium architect\, the forms of diplomacy and resistance forged between a building\, a community of actors\, and a relationship to time defined primarily by legal continuity. \n \n\nParticipation is free but registration is required. Please register here.\nAttendance is limited. Kindly let us know if you are unable to attend. \nThe seminar will be held in French. \n\nOrganized by architectural agency SCAU and Jérôme Denis.\nLearn more about the objectives and the program of the seminar \n \n\nPhoto : Wim Wenders\, Perfect days\, 2023\, Master Mind.

SUMMARY:Invitation to the launch of the third cycle of the Business Theory Chair
DESCRIPTION:The chair was created in 2015 with the ambition of rethinking corporate law based on its creative power and the responsibilities associated with it. The notion of the “mission-driven company” was one of its key proposals. Introduced by the 2019 Pacte law\, there are now almost 2\,000 mission-driven companies\, and research can now discover the diversity of their workings as well as the originality of the systemic dynamics they generate. But the deployment of mission companies is also enabling us to explore new avenues for bringing about the necessary collective transitions. \nThe third cycle of the Chair will continue the study of mission-driven companies\, their functioning and impact\, and their possible applications on a European scale. In addition to looking at individual companies\, the Chair will also broaden its scope of research into the conditions that foster collective transitions. Today\, uniform regulations and coordination around major scenarios are increasingly contested. To what extent can we design collective transitions on other bases\, based on local trajectories or differentiated modes of governance? What principles could guarantee sustainable management of activities\, at individual\, ecosystem and global levels? \nWe invite you to the launch of this third cycle\, at which we will present a review of past research and the three axes of the new scientific program: \n\nDevelopments in mission-based companies: what practical inventions and what effects? How do they relate to sustainability regulations? European perspectives?\nNew models for collective transitions: what management principles? Between “double materiality” and planning\, what other criteria can be proposed to assess sustainable\, efficient and fair management? Can the analysis of interdependencies between activities and ecosystems suggest principles – of reporting\, investment\, solidarity – adapted to the transitions to be led?\nTowards a new normative order: management standards and “interpellation rights”. From the responsibility of the legal entity to the status of the manager\, the notion of “mission” invites us to rethink the frameworks that make up creative collectives\, with control mechanisms\, but also based on management standards that allow them to be contested or challenged by third parties.\n\n  \nTo register \nProgramme\nOuverture\nGodefroy Beauvallet\, Directeur Mines Paris\, PSL Université \nPrésentation du programme de recherche : avancées et nouvelles perspectives \nKevin Levillain et Blanche Segrestin\, Mines Paris – PSL\, coordonnateurs de la chaire  \nSociétés à mission : nouvelles dynamiques et horizons européens \nValérie Brisac\, déléguée générale de la Communauté des Entreprises à Mission \nMickael Ristaniemi\, Legal and Policy Officer\, Commission européenne \nGouvernances locales\, transitions globales : nouveaux enjeux pour la recherche  \nJeroen Veldman\, professeur de corporate governance\, Nyenrode Business Universiteit  \nJérémy Lévêque\, post-doctorant\, Mines Paris – PSL   \nTransitions écologiques : le défi des nouvelles compétences  \nAntoine Frérot\, Président de Veolia  \nArmand Hatchuel\, professeur émérite\, Mines Paris – PSL \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Seminar Economic expertise and environmental actions: Shifting soil
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes \nAnastasyia Halauniova and Laure Manach \n  \n  \nShifting soil\n \n  \nThis session will consider soils as the shifting support of human activities\, and as currently alterned by global warming. From the thawing of permafrost to the fate of carbon stored in soils\, how are the transformations of soils retraced and anticipated? How are they taken up in both territorial and atmospheric politics? \nAnastasyia Halauniova (Sciences Po\, CSO)\nMaking Eternity Last: Knowledge\, Thawing Permafrost\, and Stabilisation of Life in the Russian Arctic \nWhat happens when the earth upon which (economic) life unfolds is no longer stable? To answer this question\, I turn to permafrost—a geological phenomenon where the ground remains frozen for years but that is now thawing at an unprecedented scale due to rising air temperatures. As it thaws\, permafrost wreaks all sorts of havoc\, damaging infrastructure and releasing long-stored greenhouse gases into the atmosphere\, framing its thaw as both local and planetary threats. Drawing on archival and ethnographic research with Russian permafrost scientists and practitioners\, this presentation explores the role of permafrost expertise in the Soviet Union and Russia in shaping territorial development and environmental governance. It begins by tracing the emergence of permafrost science in the Soviet Union—a state where 65% of the territory was covered by permafrost—in response to the technical and economic challenges that builders and engineers encountered when realising state-led plans to colonise and industrialise the Arctic. It then unpacks the assumptions of permafrost scientists and engineers about the nature and temporality of this phenomenon\, particularly their expectation that frozen earth is a dynamic yet lasting presence—what I term “strategic eternalism.” Finally\, it examines a recent shift in the political understanding of permafrost\, from viewing it as a stable foundation to acknowledging it as a potentially unstable surface—a transition I call “strategic non-eternalism.”  As a result\, this presentation foregrounds how permafrost scientists and practitioners navigate conflicting expectations of simplifying permafrost processes for economic planning\, on the one hand\, with an acknowledgment of its inherent dynamism and instability\, on the other hand. By examining permafrost\, this talk historicizes and specifies concerns with “shifting soils\,” challenging the tendency to see the current focus on thawing permafrost as an apocalyptic rupture\, and instead offers a more situated account of engagements with the rhythms of freezing and thawing earth shaped by state-led extractivism and colonial aspiration. \nLaure Manach (Centre Alexandre-Koyré)\nThe future of soil carbon on a warming planet. The role of scientists in making soils a sink or source of CO2 emissions \nClimate policies aim to balance the planet’s “carbon budget”\, in particular by increasing the absorption capacity of carbon sinks such as the biosphere\, oceans and soils. Soil is one of the most important carbon sinks that can be optimized. On this theme\, France is playing a crucial role with the launch of the 4 per 1000 Initiative at COP21 in 2015\, which promotes management practices that enable carbon to be stored in soils. Soils are since then the subject of a promise: to make a significant contribution to the fight against climate change. However\, more and more scientists stress the risks that soils will become a source of carbon under a warming climate. How come such different visions of soils under climate change coexists today? Drawing from an empirical investigation into soil science and soil knowledge in France and abroad\, I will explore those claims regarding the future of soil carbon\, and argue that they are grounded in different research communities\, conducting to different anticipations. \n  \n \nAnastasyia Halauniova is an urban sociologist from Belarus studying radical disturbances that cities and their residents undergo\, from state annexation and war to environmental crises. Her work is set in places that we usually call postsocialist\, where she follows city residents’ restless attempts to maintain and upgrade built environments that are either symbolically or materially degrading. Currently\, she is exploring the central role of thawing permafrost in the Arctic urban life. She is conducting a historical and an ethnographic study of Russian and Norwegian settlements on Svalbard to tell the story of places that can no longer rely on the presence of stable and frozen Arctic grounds. \nLaure Manach is a PhD candidate at au CAK – Centre Alexandre-Koyré – EHESS and is preparing a thesis entitled ‘Investigating the reconfiguration of soil science in the era of climate change’. This research has three main objectives: (i) to trace the recent history of soil science\, including the role of technological developments and infrastructures such as mapping and digital modelling; (ii) to analyze the significance of these developments and the way in which they are reconfiguring the role and professional identities of researchers and experts in these fields; (iii) to inform on the evolution of soil science towards a regulatory science on which public and private sector decisions are based\, using the development of measurement tools and standards to account for the storage potential of soils. \n \nInformation and registration\n\n\n\n  \nDate: Friday April 4\, 2025\, 11am-1pm \nVenue: École des Mines\, 60 boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris\, salle Chevalier. \nThe session will also be streamed by videoconference. SUMMARY:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about
DESCRIPTION:First session \n“Material fragility and maintenance under constraints: \nbuilding to the test of reality”\, \na look back at some projects by the SCAU agency \n\nThe architectural agency SCAU and Jérôme Denis organize a new seminar entitled ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’. \nThe history of architecture is closely linked to designo\, the creative concept that establishes a relationship with time and materials\, driven by intention and upheld in the project. Maintenance\, a mundane\, endlessly repetitive activity\, is at first glance the antithesis of designo. Here nothing is designed\, nothing is created. Deployed in a present it contributes to thickening\, maintenance cultivates the continuity of things that already exist by dealing with the ongoing transformations of matter. However\, at a time of climate and environmental crisis\, it seems very likely that those who practice this art of making things last have a lot to teach architects. Because they place fragility and wear at the heart of an ecology of attention that breaks with the promises of modernity\, because they deploy forms of material diplomacy that do away with human pretensions to mastery and control\, because they distribute responsibilities beyond the figure of the inventor\, maintenance activities draw lines of flight that can help rethink architecture by considering what in it escapes the temptation of the singular creative act. \nIt is through this breach\, which opens up to the concerns and expertise of maintenance\, and in a context of profound change in the act of building\, that we propose to explore and question the relationship that architecture cultivates with these common things that hold us and inhabit us\, betting on a partnership approach\, multidisciplinary and open to all parties involved. \n\nFirst session: “Material fragility and maintenance under constraints: building to the test of reality”\, a look back at some projects by the SCAU agency. \nDate: Friday March 28\, 2025\, 10-12am.\nVenue: SCAU\, 35 rue Tournefort\, 75005 Paris. \nParticipation is free but registration is required. SUMMARY:Innovation Management Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Adopting an approach based on the study of practices\, Isabelle Bouty\, Rachel Bocquet and Hélène Delacour will share the driving forces behind innovation through a study of the Maison Pierre Hermé Paris in the field of haute pâtisserie. While ambidexterity is a classic framework in innovation management to explain the ability of organizations to manage the tension between exploitation and exploration\, here it is enriched by a detailed analysis of individual implications\, interactions between players and the specific context of social dynamics at work in the exceptional field of high-end pastry-making. The researchers will highlight three key practices (codifying\, testing and visualizing)\, mobilized on a daily basis by actors who collectively contribute to ambidexterity and innovation in patisserie\, based on a case that is as emblematic as it is original. \n  \n \n  \nClick here to find out more \nFree registration \nRegistration closes on Tuesday\, March 25\, 2025 at 3:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Seminar Industrial Adventures
DESCRIPTION:At the University of Louvain-la-Neuve\, Yves Jougen made a discovery that enabled the creation of small-scale particle gas pedals. In 1986\, with the support of funding\, he set up a company to exploit their medical and industrial applications. IBA went from strength to strength\, but in the late 1990s\, Canadians launched a hostile takeover bid. The company’s management team mobilized to retain control by taking on debt in the form of an LBO. To limit these debts\, IBA then went public\, retaining a 30% stake in order to retain control of its strategy. Today\, the IBA Group employs 2\,500 people\, including 1\,200 in Belgium\, and has expanded worldwide\, with a strong presence in the United States and China. The founders are now looking to pass on the capital to the entrepreneurs who will emerge within the Group\, to enable it to continue its astonishing adventure while retaining control of its destiny. \n  \nRegistration \nFree registration – Registration closes on Tuesday\, March 25\, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. \nRead more

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Christelle Gramaglia (INRAE)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nChristelle Gramaglia \nSociologist in environmental sciences\, INRAE \, University of Montpellier \n  \nto discuss her book \nHabiter la pollution industrielle \nExpériences et métrologies citoyennes de la contamination \n \n  \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Solène Sarnowski and Isaac Bariller \n\n \nQuatrième de couverture : Que font les pollutions à ceux qui habitent à proximité de leurs zones d’émission ? \nLiving with industrial pollution. Experiences and citizen metrology of contamination\nWhat does pollution do to those living near the emission zones? Forced cohabitation with potentially toxic chemical residues is a source of great stress and unrest\, but it does not diminish attachment to the affected areas. This coexistence is also conducive to the deployment of tactics for living with danger\, forged by the inhabitants of the area on the basis of their perceptions and their experiential knowledge… Based on a series of groundbreaking surveys conducted in France\, for example in the Gulf of Fos\, but also in Spain and Portugal\, the author analyzes the everyday experiences of people living near polluting plants. She examines the social and environmental consequences of chronic pollution and the changes in practices that are intended to reduce it. She also identifies avenues for collective recovery\, arguing that the hybridization of expert and lay knowledge through experiments in participatory metrology could help define more precautionary methods of regulating environmental and health risks.\n \nChristelle Gramaglia\, Habiter la pollution industrielle. SUMMARY:Cerna seminar welcome Louis Pape (Télécom-Paris)
DESCRIPTION:Dear all\, \nWe are pleased to announce that Louis Pape (Télécom Paris) will be the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. The seminar will take place on Wednesday\, March 19\, 2025\, at 4 PM in Salle Vendôme. \n\nLouis will present his paper: \nIs Competition Only One Click Away? The Digital Markets Act Impact on Google Maps \n(joint with Michelangelo Rossi)  \nThis paper examines the impact of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) on consumer behavior\, focusing on changes in Google’s search result presentation in the European Union (EU). Specifically\, it investigates the effects of Google’s removal of clickable maps in search results\, a modification implemented in January 2024. This change forces users to perform additional searches to access Google Maps or alternative mapping services\, thus increasing search costs. Using a difference-in-differences approach\, we compare Google search volumes from EU to non-EU countries before and after the implementation of the DMA. By eliminating Google Maps’ advantage of being only one click away from Google Search users\, we find that EU consumers search significantly more for online mapping services. We measure a 25% and 18% increase in Google’s search volume for the query terms maps and google maps\, resulting in an excess of 34\,407\,000 and 8\,901\,000 searches over six months\, respectively. This search increase suggests potential exposure to alternative mapping services. However\, searches for services like apple maps and bing maps also rose\, but not as significantly. Moreover\, traffic data shows a non-significant decrease in visits to Google Maps\, suggesting minimal migration to alternative services. These findings indicate that removing Google’s one-click advantage can lead to higher search costs for users without significantly boosting the discovery or adoption of alternative mapping services in the short run. \nIf you would like to join Louis for lunch and/or meet with him before the seminar\, please sign up for a time slot here \nThe paper Louis will present can be found here in case you want to have a look at it in advance. \n  \nLooking forward to seeing you there\,\nSven

SUMMARY:Seminar Economic expertise and environmental actions: Economic knowledge and growth
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes \nVicky Kluzik and Arnaud Orain \n  \n  \nEconomic knowledge and growth\n \n  \nHas economic science always naturalized the goal of growth as economic policy? In this session\, our guests will focus on the history of economics to show how alternative economic thinkers and knowledge have been concerned at different times with the biophysical limits of our planet\, against the idea of the possibility of infinite abstract growth. We will collectively discuss the extent to which this knowledge aligned with other conceptions of economic expertise and its relationship to democracy\, as well as the reasons why it has been forgotten or excluded from the mainstream economic discipline. \nVicky Kluzik (Social sciences faculty\, Goethe University Frankfurt)\nWithin or beyond limits? Economics in the wild and the cultural logic of environmentalization \nHow much is too much? Economists and ecologists\, especially from the 1960s onwards\, have been arguing against pathological affluence in the western hemisphere and endeavoured planetary management through calculations\, models\, and simulations to predict habitable futures within limits. Focusing on the period between the late 1960s and the present\, this talk examines the intellectual history of market-based approaches that aim to integrate nature into circuits of capital. In a historical-sociological approach\, I investigate how nature has become calculable\, governable and investable through the commonalities and ruptures in the interwoven intellectual histories of the economics vis-à-vis ecology. I delve into the various concepts and tools serving as political technologies of the environmentalization of economics vis-à-vis the economization of nature\, examining the contradictory constellations of actors\, discourses\, and institutions – ‘economics in the wild’ – invested in the valuation of ecosystems. Ultimately\, I propose a conceptual approach of biosolutionism to capture the rationalities of economics in the wild against the prevailing cultural logic of environmentalization. \nArnaud Orain (Centre de recherches historiques – CRH-UMR CNRS 8558\, EHESS)\nEconomics\, Ecology\, and Democracy: The Lost Knowledge of Economics [Talk in French] \nPolitical economy became an autonomous discipline at the end of the 18th century in France and England. From the very beginning\, it was characterized by a desire\, like the exact sciences\, to reason based on abstractions and measurable quantities\, thus distinguishing itself from other human and social sciences. To achieve this\, it overlooked other possible approaches that existed at the time: the “science of commerce” and “economic physics.” The science of commerce rejects any knowledge produced in the philosopher’s study. It is the practitioners with vernacular knowledge who are the true scholars: artisans\, farmers\, merchants\, and great traders. To make the most of a given natural determinism— a “climate\,” what we would today call an ecosystem or environment— it accumulates observations on geography\, soils\, forests\, plants\, animals\, infrastructure\, and the navy\, and addresses economic questions through open discussion. It invites the public to co-create knowledge that is not the result of a “discovery” by an elite alone. “Economic physics” is an applied physics to the natural world\, which is thought of as a self-regulating organism within each climate. Through the knowledge of the properties of native plants and animals\, humans transform their environments to better satisfy their needs. Arnaud Orain introduces us to these alternative economies at a time when issues related to climate\, agricultural productivism\, and soil depletion are leading to citizen mobilizations who wish to participate in the development of preservation knowledge. \n  \n \nVicky Kluzik is a research associate and doctoral student at the University of Frankfurt\, where she works in the ‘Biotechnologies\, Nature and Society’ research group. Currently\, she is a visiting doctoral student at the Centre de Sociologie de l’Innovation (CSI)\, École des Mines\, Paris. She studied Political Science\, Economics and Cultural Studies in Munich\, Paris\, Berlin and London. After her studies\, she worked at the OECD (esp. on the “future of work”) and as a PhD Fellow at the Centre for Citizenship\, Civil Society and Rule of Law at the University of Aberdeen. Her research interests include the history and politics of capitalism (green and digital)\, STS\, economic sociology\, political and environmental sociology\, sociology of time and feminist theories. Together with Josef Barla and Thomas Lemke\, she edited the book Biokapital. Beiträge zur Kritik der politischen Ökonomie des Lebens. Frankfurt am Main: Campus (2022). Vicky Kluzik is currently a visiting researcher at CSI. \n\n \nArnaud Orain is an economist and historian\, and Director of Studies at the EHESS’ Centre de recherches historiques (CRH-UMR CNRS 8558). His research focuses on economic history and the intellectual history of economics (16th to 21st centuries). He is the author of Les savoirs perdus de l’économie. Contribution à l’équilibre du vivant (Gallimard\, 2023)\, a book that questions the relationship between economic knowledge\, scientific democracy and ecology. \n \n\nInformation and registration\n \nDate: Friday\, March 7\, 2025\, 11am-1pm \nVenue: École des Mines\, 60 boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris. SUMMARY:Seminar Economic expertise and environmental actions: Lands\, mines\, futures
DESCRIPTION:The seminar ‘Economic expertise and environmental actions’ welcomes \nTobias Olofsson and Gisa Weszkalnys \n  \nLands\, mines\, futures \n  \nThis session is organised in partnership with the members of the ANTICIP du PEPR sous-sol bien commun project.  \nIn this session we will explore the anticipation techniques used by a variety of actors (industry and government in particular) to create desirable futures for the development of new mines around the world (in Europe and Africa). \n  \n\nTobias Olofsson (Department of sociologie\, Lund University)\nUncertainty management and tools of persuasion: Predicted futures in mineral exploration \nMining and mineral exploration comes with substantial uncertainty. Success is rare and the costs are often high. Managing uncertainty is therefore a central concern; and the industry has developed several tools to help it translate uncertainty into risk and verified knowledge. Then again\, the success of these tools is varied and the mining industry is home to many examples of unexpected failures and blown predictions. In this presentation\, I draw on ethnographic fieldwork in the Swedish mining and exploration industry and explore some of the tools that industry members use to render mineral extraction calculable. I address the social consequences of prediction work and highlight the ways in which models\, standards\, and other tools of uncertainty management serve dual purposes in the hands of mineral explorationists\, first as tools of uncertainty management\, and second as tools of persuasion\, tools which are used to justify the benefits of mining futures over other potential futures. \nGisa Weszkalnys (Department of anthropology\, London School of Economics and Political Sciences – LSE)\nLiabilities of time \nThis paper explores a productive crossroads between studies of energy resources and recent scholarship on racial and affective capitalism. It introduces the concept of ‘affective regulation’\, the management of emotions by corporations and governments to control populations seen as affectively liable. These practices\, rooted in colonial legacies\, sustain racial and class hierarchies in the context of this emergent oil economy. Here\, the waiting body shows up the limits of sovereign control while justifying its expansion. I extend these insights to the study of how anticipation as a specific temporal disposition is cultivated in the context of the emergent oil economy of São Tomé and Príncipe. By focusing on the individual experiences of men working within STP’s oil bureaucracy\, the paper reveals the frustrations and futility of the (affective) regulatory system in place. It concludes by suggesting that Santomeans’ impatience about the prolonged wait for oil wealth can be read as a critique of historical patterns of extractivism and marginalisation. \n \nTobias Olofsson is a postdoctoral fellow with the Show & Tell project led by Dr. Alison Gerber\, whose objectives are to investigate how novel types of evidence travel across disciplinary boundaries. Olofsson’s contribution to the project focuses on investigating how new digital tools for recording and modeling spaces\, objects\, and actors influence and challenge existing practices. He holds a PhD in Sociology from Uppsala University where he defended his dissertation thesis Mining Futures: Predictions and Uncertainty in Swedish Mineral Exploration. The thesis investigated how forecasts and predictions are used by mineral explorationists and focused on how forecasts and predictions are used to manage of economic\, technological\, and environmental uncertainties as well as how they help explorationists persuade key actors and stakeholders to support future mining operations. \nGisa Weszkalnys is Associate Professor at the Department of Anthropology of the London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE). Her research focused on energy developments\, plantation and extractive economies\, and struggles over transparency and inclusion in environment/resource management in São Tomé and Príncipe and the UK. A question I keep returning to in my research\, she states\, is how people’s imaginations of the future and their ideas of what’s to come shape the cultural and material worlds they make. \nInformation and registration\nVenue: Mines-Paris – PSL\, 60 boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris.
