SUMMARY:Seminar ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about
DESCRIPTION:First session \n“Material fragility and maintenance under constraints: \nbuilding to the test of reality”\, \na look back at some projects by the SCAU agency \n\nThe architectural agency SCAU and Jérôme Denis organize a new seminar entitled ‘Maintaining. Architecture and maintenance\, what we care about’. \nThe history of architecture is closely linked to designo\, the creative concept that establishes a relationship with time and materials\, driven by intention and upheld in the project. Maintenance\, a mundane\, endlessly repetitive activity\, is at first glance the antithesis of designo. Here nothing is designed\, nothing is created. Deployed in a present it contributes to thickening\, maintenance cultivates the continuity of things that already exist by dealing with the ongoing transformations of matter. However\, at a time of climate and environmental crisis\, it seems very likely that those who practice this art of making things last have a lot to teach architects. Because they place fragility and wear at the heart of an ecology of attention that breaks with the promises of modernity\, because they deploy forms of material diplomacy that do away with human pretensions to mastery and control\, because they distribute responsibilities beyond the figure of the inventor\, maintenance activities draw lines of flight that can help rethink architecture by considering what in it escapes the temptation of the singular creative act. \nIt is through this breach\, which opens up to the concerns and expertise of maintenance\, and in a context of profound change in the act of building\, that we propose to explore and question the relationship that architecture cultivates with these common things that hold us and inhabit us\, betting on a partnership approach\, multidisciplinary and open to all parties involved. \n\nFirst session: “Material fragility and maintenance under constraints: building to the test of reality”\, a look back at some projects by the SCAU agency. \nDate: Friday March 28\, 2025\, 10-12am.\nVenue: SCAU\, 35 rue Tournefort\, 75005 Paris. \nParticipation is free but registration is required. Please register here. \nThe seminar will be held in French. \n\nPhoto credit: Wim Wenders\, Perfect days\, 2023\, Master Mind.

SUMMARY:Innovation Management Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Adopting an approach based on the study of practices\, Isabelle Bouty\, Rachel Bocquet and Hélène Delacour will share the driving forces behind innovation through a study of the Maison Pierre Hermé Paris in the field of haute pâtisserie. While ambidexterity is a classic framework in innovation management to explain the ability of organizations to manage the tension between exploitation and exploration\, here it is enriched by a detailed analysis of individual implications\, interactions between players and the specific context of social dynamics at work in the exceptional field of high-end pastry-making. The researchers will highlight three key practices (codifying\, testing and visualizing)\, mobilized on a daily basis by actors who collectively contribute to ambidexterity and innovation in patisserie\, based on a case that is as emblematic as it is original. \n  \n \n  \nClick here to find out more \nFree registration \nRegistration closes on Tuesday\, March 25\, 2025 at 3:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Seminar Industrial Adventures
DESCRIPTION:At the University of Louvain-la-Neuve\, Yves Jougen made a discovery that enabled the creation of small-scale particle gas pedals. In 1986\, with the support of funding\, he set up a company to exploit their medical and industrial applications. IBA went from strength to strength\, but in the late 1990s\, Canadians launched a hostile takeover bid. The company’s management team mobilized to retain control by taking on debt in the form of an LBO. To limit these debts\, IBA then went public\, retaining a 30% stake in order to retain control of its strategy. Today\, the IBA Group employs 2\,500 people\, including 1\,200 in Belgium\, and has expanded worldwide\, with a strong presence in the United States and China. The founders are now looking to pass on the capital to the entrepreneurs who will emerge within the Group\, to enable it to continue its astonishing adventure while retaining control of its destiny. \n  \nRegistration \nFree registration – Registration closes on Tuesday\, March 25\, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. \nRead more

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Christelle Gramaglia (INRAE)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nChristelle Gramaglia \nSociologist in environmental sciences\, INRAE \, University of Montpellier \n  \nto discuss her book \nHabiter la pollution industrielle \nExpériences et métrologies citoyennes de la contamination \n \n  \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Solène Sarnowski and Isaac Bariller \n\n \nQuatrième de couverture : Que font les pollutions à ceux qui habitent à proximité de leurs zones d’émission ? \nLiving with industrial pollution. Experiences and citizen metrology of contamination\nWhat does pollution do to those living near the emission zones? Forced cohabitation with potentially toxic chemical residues is a source of great stress and unrest\, but it does not diminish attachment to the affected areas. This coexistence is also conducive to the deployment of tactics for living with danger\, forged by the inhabitants of the area on the basis of their perceptions and their experiential knowledge… Based on a series of groundbreaking surveys conducted in France\, for example in the Gulf of Fos\, but also in Spain and Portugal\, the author analyzes the everyday experiences of people living near polluting plants. She examines the social and environmental consequences of chronic pollution and the changes in practices that are intended to reduce it. She also identifies avenues for collective recovery\, arguing that the hybridization of expert and lay knowledge through experiments in participatory metrology could help define more precautionary methods of regulating environmental and health risks.\n \nChristelle Gramaglia\, Habiter la pollution industrielle. SUMMARY:Cerna seminar welcome Louis Pape (Télécom-Paris)
DESCRIPTION:Dear all\, \nWe are pleased to announce that Louis Pape (Télécom Paris) will be the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. The seminar will take place on Wednesday\, March 19\, 2025\, at 4 PM in Salle Vendôme. \n\nLouis will present his paper: \nIs Competition Only One Click Away? The Digital Markets Act Impact on Google Maps \n(joint with Michelangelo Rossi)  \nThis paper examines the impact of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) on consumer behavior\, focusing on changes in Google’s search result presentation in the European Union (EU). Specifically\, it investigates the effects of Google’s removal of clickable maps in search results\, a modification implemented in January 2024. This change forces users to perform additional searches to access Google Maps or alternative mapping services\, thus increasing search costs. Using a difference-in-differences approach\, we compare Google search volumes from EU to non-EU countries before and after the implementation of the DMA. By eliminating Google Maps’ advantage of being only one click away from Google Search users\, we find that EU consumers search significantly more for online mapping services. We measure a 25% and 18% increase in Google’s search volume for the query terms maps and google maps\, resulting in an excess of 34\,407\,000 and 8\,901\,000 searches over six months\, respectively. This search increase suggests potential exposure to alternative mapping services. However\, searches for services like apple maps and bing maps also rose\, but not as significantly. Moreover\, traffic data shows a non-significant decrease in visits to Google Maps\, suggesting minimal migration to alternative services. These findings indicate that removing Google’s one-click advantage can lead to higher search costs for users without significantly boosting the discovery or adoption of alternative mapping services in the short run. \nIf you would like to join Louis for lunch and/or meet with him before the seminar\, please sign up for a time slot here \nThe paper Louis will present can be found here in case you want to have a look at it in advance. \n  \nLooking forward to seeing you there\,\nSven

SUMMARY:Seminar Economic expertise and environmental actions: Economic knowledge and growth
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” welcomes \nVicky Kluzik and Arnaud Orain \n  \n  \nEconomic knowledge and growth\n \n  \nHas economic science always naturalized the goal of growth as economic policy? In this session\, our guests will focus on the history of economics to show how alternative economic thinkers and knowledge have been concerned at different times with the biophysical limits of our planet\, against the idea of the possibility of infinite abstract growth. We will collectively discuss the extent to which this knowledge aligned with other conceptions of economic expertise and its relationship to democracy\, as well as the reasons why it has been forgotten or excluded from the mainstream economic discipline. \nVicky Kluzik (Social sciences faculty\, Goethe University Frankfurt)\nWithin or beyond limits? Economics in the wild and the cultural logic of environmentalization \nHow much is too much? Economists and ecologists\, especially from the 1960s onwards\, have been arguing against pathological affluence in the western hemisphere and endeavoured planetary management through calculations\, models\, and simulations to predict habitable futures within limits. Focusing on the period between the late 1960s and the present\, this talk examines the intellectual history of market-based approaches that aim to integrate nature into circuits of capital. In a historical-sociological approach\, I investigate how nature has become calculable\, governable and investable through the commonalities and ruptures in the interwoven intellectual histories of the economics vis-à-vis ecology. I delve into the various concepts and tools serving as political technologies of the environmentalization of economics vis-à-vis the economization of nature\, examining the contradictory constellations of actors\, discourses\, and institutions – ‘economics in the wild’ – invested in the valuation of ecosystems. Ultimately\, I propose a conceptual approach of biosolutionism to capture the rationalities of economics in the wild against the prevailing cultural logic of environmentalization. \nArnaud Orain (Centre de recherches historiques – CRH-UMR CNRS 8558\, EHESS)\nEconomics\, Ecology\, and Democracy: The Lost Knowledge of Economics [Talk in French] \nPolitical economy became an autonomous discipline at the end of the 18th century in France and England. From the very beginning\, it was characterized by a desire\, like the exact sciences\, to reason based on abstractions and measurable quantities\, thus distinguishing itself from other human and social sciences. To achieve this\, it overlooked other possible approaches that existed at the time: the “science of commerce” and “economic physics.” The science of commerce rejects any knowledge produced in the philosopher’s study. It is the practitioners with vernacular knowledge who are the true scholars: artisans\, farmers\, merchants\, and great traders. To make the most of a given natural determinism— a “climate\,” what we would today call an ecosystem or environment— it accumulates observations on geography\, soils\, forests\, plants\, animals\, infrastructure\, and the navy\, and addresses economic questions through open discussion. It invites the public to co-create knowledge that is not the result of a “discovery” by an elite alone. “Economic physics” is an applied physics to the natural world\, which is thought of as a self-regulating organism within each climate. Through the knowledge of the properties of native plants and animals\, humans transform their environments to better satisfy their needs. Arnaud Orain introduces us to these alternative economies at a time when issues related to climate\, agricultural productivism\, and soil depletion are leading to citizen mobilizations who wish to participate in the development of preservation knowledge. \n  \n \nVicky Kluzik is a research associate and doctoral student at the University of Frankfurt\, where she works in the ‘Biotechnologies\, Nature and Society’ research group. Currently\, she is a visiting doctoral student at the Centre de Sociologie de l’Innovation (CSI)\, École des Mines\, Paris. She studied Political Science\, Economics and Cultural Studies in Munich\, Paris\, Berlin and London. After her studies\, she worked at the OECD (esp. on the “future of work”) and as a PhD Fellow at the Centre for Citizenship\, Civil Society and Rule of Law at the University of Aberdeen. Her research interests include the history and politics of capitalism (green and digital)\, STS\, economic sociology\, political and environmental sociology\, sociology of time and feminist theories. Together with Josef Barla and Thomas Lemke\, she edited the book Biokapital. Beiträge zur Kritik der politischen Ökonomie des Lebens. Frankfurt am Main: Campus (2022). Vicky Kluzik is currently a visiting researcher at CSI. \n\n \nArnaud Orain is an economist and historian\, and Director of Studies at the EHESS’ Centre de recherches historiques (CRH-UMR CNRS 8558). His research focuses on economic history and the intellectual history of economics (16th to 21st centuries). He is the author of Les savoirs perdus de l’économie. Contribution à l’équilibre du vivant (Gallimard\, 2023)\, a book that questions the relationship between economic knowledge\, scientific democracy and ecology. \n \n\nInformation and registration\n \nDate: Friday\, March 7\, 2025\, 11am-1pm \nVenue: École des Mines\, 60 boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris. SUMMARY:Seminar Economic expertise and environmental actions: Lands\, mines\, futures
DESCRIPTION:The seminar ‘Economic expertise and environmental actions’ welcomes \nTobias Olofsson and Gisa Weszkalnys \n  \nLands\, mines\, futures \n  \nThis session is organised in partnership with the members of the ANTICIP du PEPR sous-sol bien commun project.  \nIn this session we will explore the anticipation techniques used by a variety of actors (industry and government in particular) to create desirable futures for the development of new mines around the world (in Europe and Africa). \n  \n\nTobias Olofsson (Department of sociologie\, Lund University)\nUncertainty management and tools of persuasion: Predicted futures in mineral exploration \nMining and mineral exploration comes with substantial uncertainty. Success is rare and the costs are often high. Managing uncertainty is therefore a central concern; and the industry has developed several tools to help it translate uncertainty into risk and verified knowledge. Then again\, the success of these tools is varied and the mining industry is home to many examples of unexpected failures and blown predictions. In this presentation\, I draw on ethnographic fieldwork in the Swedish mining and exploration industry and explore some of the tools that industry members use to render mineral extraction calculable. I address the social consequences of prediction work and highlight the ways in which models\, standards\, and other tools of uncertainty management serve dual purposes in the hands of mineral explorationists\, first as tools of uncertainty management\, and second as tools of persuasion\, tools which are used to justify the benefits of mining futures over other potential futures. \nGisa Weszkalnys (Department of anthropology\, London School of Economics and Political Sciences – LSE)\nLiabilities of time \nThis paper explores a productive crossroads between studies of energy resources and recent scholarship on racial and affective capitalism. It introduces the concept of ‘affective regulation’\, the management of emotions by corporations and governments to control populations seen as affectively liable. These practices\, rooted in colonial legacies\, sustain racial and class hierarchies in the context of this emergent oil economy. Here\, the waiting body shows up the limits of sovereign control while justifying its expansion. I extend these insights to the study of how anticipation as a specific temporal disposition is cultivated in the context of the emergent oil economy of São Tomé and Príncipe. By focusing on the individual experiences of men working within STP’s oil bureaucracy\, the paper reveals the frustrations and futility of the (affective) regulatory system in place. It concludes by suggesting that Santomeans’ impatience about the prolonged wait for oil wealth can be read as a critique of historical patterns of extractivism and marginalisation. \n \nTobias Olofsson is a postdoctoral fellow with the Show & Tell project led by Dr. Alison Gerber\, whose objectives are to investigate how novel types of evidence travel across disciplinary boundaries. Olofsson’s contribution to the project focuses on investigating how new digital tools for recording and modeling spaces\, objects\, and actors influence and challenge existing practices. He holds a PhD in Sociology from Uppsala University where he defended his dissertation thesis Mining Futures: Predictions and Uncertainty in Swedish Mineral Exploration. The thesis investigated how forecasts and predictions are used by mineral explorationists and focused on how forecasts and predictions are used to manage of economic\, technological\, and environmental uncertainties as well as how they help explorationists persuade key actors and stakeholders to support future mining operations. \nGisa Weszkalnys is Associate Professor at the Department of Anthropology of the London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE). Her research focused on energy developments\, plantation and extractive economies\, and struggles over transparency and inclusion in environment/resource management in São Tomé and Príncipe and the UK. A question I keep returning to in my research\, she states\, is how people’s imaginations of the future and their ideas of what’s to come shape the cultural and material worlds they make. \nInformation and registration\nVenue: Mines-Paris – PSL\, 60 boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris. Room L120. \nThe session will also be streamed by videoconference. The link will be sent upon registration just before the seminar. \nThe seminar is open to all. Please register here to participate in this session. \n\nContact: Béatrice Cointe\, Kewan Mertens or Alexandre Violle \n\nFind out more about the program \n  \nPhoto credit: Tobias Olofsson\, Lund University.\nPhoto credit: Gisa Weszkalnys\, LSE.

Plantec\, P. Le Masson and P. Leclerc. Plantec\, P. Le Masson and B. Weil. \nWhile history is full of emblematic examples of successful synergies between these two worlds – from Pasteur’s work to that of Bell Labs\, or more recently from the discovery of giant magnetoresistance to CRISPR-Cas9 – current forms of science-industry collaboration are also often questioned. \nHow can we reinvent these interactions to meet contemporary challenges? What models can be used to both explore fundamental knowledge and develop concrete solutions for current transitions? \nWith the participation of prestigious players from the academic\, industrial and institutional worlds\, this evening aims to better understand how to institutionalize mutually beneficial approaches between these two ecosystems. \nDiscussions can continue at the cocktail reception following the event. \nRegistration \nLink : https://minesparis-psl-eu.zoom.us/j/98549143347?pwd=rai943tGgcVBQzgjXLfYEc14hlAnQa.1 >\nMeeting ID : 98549143347\nPassword : 072808

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Fanny Gribenski (NYU\, Arts & Science)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nFanny Gribenski \nHistorical musicologist\, Assistant Professor at NYU\, Arts & Science \n  \nto discuss her book \nTuning the World \nThe Rise of 440 Hertz in Music\, Science\, \nand Politics\, 1859–1955 \n  \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Louison Magro and Hafid Ait Sidi Hammou \nBack cover: Tuning the World tells the unknown story of how the musical pitch A 440 became the global norm. Now commonly accepted as the point of reference for musicians in the Western world\, A 440 hertz only became the standard pitch during an international conference held in 1939. The adoption of this norm was the result of decades of negotiations between countries\, involving a diverse group of performers\, composers\, diplomats\, physicists\, and sound engineers. Although there is widespread awareness of the variability of musical pitches over time\, as attested by the use of lower frequencies to perform early music repertoires\, no study has fully explained the invention of our current concert pitch. In this book\, Fanny Gribenski draws on a rich variety of previously unexplored archival sources and a unique combination of musicological perspectives\, transnational history\, and science studies to tell the unknown story of how A 440 became the global norm. Tuning the World demonstrates the aesthetic\, scientific\, industrial\, and political contingencies underlying the construction of one of the most “natural” objects of contemporary musical performance and shows how this century-old effort was ultimately determined by the influence of a few powerful nations. \nFanny Gribenski\, Tuning the world. Retracing both its intellectual history and the effects of its deployment as a valuation device\, we will analyzse it as a feature of economic models\, as a political technology\, and as a way to bring the future into existence – in particular the future of the climate and the environment. \nBéatrice Cherrier (CREST)\nHow the “Ramsey formula” came to define time discounting in economics (1950-2000) \nBased on an article written with Pedro Garcia Duarte\, the talk investigates the emergence and stabilization of the Ramsey formula as a major framework for discounting in economics. Despite widespread belief\, the formula did not originate in Frank Ramsey’s 1928 paper. We track how policy and academic economists increasingly grappled with discounting in public investment decisions in the 1940s-1960s\, with a few of them endorsing the ongoing work in optimal growth theory as the proper framework for deriving rates. This framework was further discussed in the 1970s and 1980s as the energy crisis made discounting for the distant future a salient issue. We show that it was only in the 1990s\, as discounting in climate models was discussed in the context of IPCC reporting\, that the Ramsey formula stabilized as a discounting framework. In the process\, it transformed from an optimality condition to a definition\, encompassing the debate between “descriptive” and “prescriptive” approaches to discounting. Our research highlights the pivotal role of Kenneth Arrow in spreading the Ramsey formula\, as well as the persistent tension between theoretical consistency\, ethical choices and tractability motives in deciding whether and how to discount in economic models. \nLiliana Doganova (CSI-i3\, Mines Paris – PSL)\nDiscounting the Future: The Ascendancy of a Political Technology \nThe climate and ecological crisis prompts a question: have we lost our capacity to act on the future? In this talk\, I propose to address this issue through the devices that compose our relationship with the future. I focus on a device that recently came under the spotlights in debates on climate change but has been entrenched in economic and policy practices for decades. This device is discounting: a technique that values all things through the flows of costs and benefits or revenues that they are likely to generate in the future\, with these future flows being literally dis-counted as they are translated in the present.  Building on my recently published book Discounting the Future: The Ascendancy of a Political Technology (Zone Books\, 2024)\, I outline three troubles with discounting. First\, is the future worth less than the present\, and should it be counted or discounted? Second\, does value stem from the future\, and should looking to the future guide acting in the present? Third\, is discounting a general form of action\, which can encompass all kinds of entities and issues? I discuss these three troubles through examples drawn from the historical sociology of discounting developed in the book as well as more recent examples. Analyzing discounting as a political technology leads to exploring the links between temporality and valuation. I conclude that shifting focus from the problem of (not) knowing the future to the problem of (de)valuing the future enables us to examine afresh what acting on the future means and entails.  \n\n \n\n \n\n\n \n\n \nBéatrice Cherrier is a historian of economics\,  a CNRS Research Director and professor at CREST (Centre de recherche en économie et statistique – CNRS\, ENSAE Paris\, École polytechnique). Her research focuses on the history of applied economics since the Second World War. She is interested in various aspects of “applied work” in economics: the history of specific fields (public economics\, urban economics\, environmental economics\, macroeconomics); the practices of economists outside the academic world\, in particular in central banks and international institutions; the influence of computerisation on economists’ models\, tools and practices\, in particular their tractability constraints; finally\, she is working on the consequences of the growing prestige of applied economics on the scientific recognition given to women economists since the 1970s. \nLiliana Doganova is Associate Professor at Mines Paris – PSL and researcher at CSI (Centre de sociologie de l’innovation\, I3 UMR 9217). At the intersection of economic sociology and Science and Technology Studies\, her work has focused on business models\, the valorization of public research and markets for bio- and clean-technologies. She has published in journals such as Economy and Society\, the Journal of Cultural Economy\, Research Policy\, Science as Culture\, and Science and Public Policy. She is the author of Valoriser la science (2012) and co-author of Capitalization: A Cultural Guide (2017). Her latest book\, Discounting the Future: The Ascendancy of a Political Technology (2024\, Zone Books)\, explores the links between valuation and temporality through a historical sociology of the technique of discounting the future. Her new research projects focus on forests valuations (research conducted as part of the Valuethreads project\, coordinated by Kristin Asdal at the University of Oslo) and on drug prices (research conducted with Vololona Rabeharisoa as part of the SPIN project). Liliana is co-director\, together with Clément Marquet\, of the program in Public Affairs and Innovation at Ecole des Mines de Paris. She is a member of the editorial boards of Valuation Studies and Journal of Cultural Economy.  \n  \n\n\n\nInformation and registration\n\n\nThe session will also be streamed by videoconference. SUMMARY:Seminar Economic expertise and environmental actions: Water management
DESCRIPTION:The seminar ‘Economic expertise and environmental actions’ welcomes \nLéda Dimitriadi and Sophie Tabouret \n  \n  \nWater management\n \n  \nHow to manage water in a changing climate? This session\, organised as part of the FORET project funded by the CNRS – MITI\, will look into water management insofar as it connects land planning and infrastructure development on the one hand\, and hydrogeology and climatology on the other hand. \n\n\nLéda Dimitriadi (ENSA Paris Val de Seine\, UMR AUSSER)\nThe issue of water in architecture and land use planning\n\n\n\nThe triple crisis of environment\, climate and energy emphasizes the need to integrate water management as one of the key issues in architecture\, urbanism and land use planning. In this context\, the designer – architect\, urban planner – must adopt a transdisciplinary approach that\, depending on the scale of the intervention\, combines the production of buildings or the development of space with hydraulic engineering\, geography\, hydrogeology\, climatology and landscape studies. It must engage in and anticipate a multi-scalar approach\, involving interaction with specialists from these other disciplines. This work of architecture and spatial planning is based on what already exists\, both natural and man-made\, on the potential of infrastructures and hydraulic heritage. It involves a detailed analysis of the characteristics of the regions studied\, which are subject to seasonal floods or droughts\, as the case may be\, but is also confronted with the equally complex economic and political issues of water management\, which also requires collaboration with local actors. Based on real-life examples\, as well as on the experience of project-based teaching in schools of architecture that mobilize interdisciplinary approaches\, we will highlight some of the issues that link architecture and planning to the question of water and its management\, both tangible and intangible. \nSophie Tabouret (EHESS\, CIRED)\nRethinking water governance – infrastructures and the “cost” of water\n\nThe development of water storage infrastructures for agricultural irrigation\, known as “retenues de substitution” [substitute water reservoirs]\, in the Poitevin marshland has sparked controversy. Criticism has focused not only on the problem of water privatization\, but also on the downside of agricultural industrialization. I approach these water infrastructures as relational objects (Leigh Star 2018)\, focusing on their materiality. Part of their materiality\, however\, can be observed in their costs\, the costs of building\, securing\, and maintaining them. These costs are reflected in the price of water. Water from reservoirs is “secured”\, but it is more expensive. And this affects agriculture\, farmers\, marketing channels and local areas. \n \n\nLéda Dimitriadi\, architect-engineer\, a graduate of the School of Architecture of the National Polytechnic University of Athens\, is an HDR professor at the Ecole nationale supérieure d’architecture Paris-Val de Seine and a researcher in the ACS team of UMR AUSSER. At ENSA Paris-Malaquais\, she has taught sciences and techniques for architecture and the theories and practices of architectural and urban design. From 2023 to 2024\, she was President of the Research Commission and Vice-President of the Scientific and Pedagogical Council of ENSA Paris-Malaquais. \nSophie Tabouret s a post-doctoral researcher at CIRED and EHESS on the issue of water in the Poitevin marshes\, following an engineering degree in agronomy and a thesis in STS on the creation of new grape varieties for viticulture. \n\n \n \n\nThe session will also be streamed by videoconference. The link will be sent upon registration just before the seminar. \nThe seminar is open to all. SUMMARY:Seminar Economic expertise and environmental actions: Environmental zoning
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” will welcome \nIsabelle Arpin et Estienne Rodary \nEnvironmental zoning \n This session will explore biodiversity conservation in protected areas (what we call “environmental zoning”). What kind of territorial development does this generate and what are the mechanisms of knowledge production? What value can be attached to the environment? We welcome : \nEstienne Rodary (GRED\, IRD) – Conservation\, how many connections? Towards a renewal of biodiversity conservation policies \nConservation policies occupy a special place in the environmental arena. They were among the first protective measures introduced at a time when ecological concerns were marginal. But now that the environment has become a global issue\, they struggle to compete with other concerns. In the first case\, conservation had been constructed as a specific sector\, designed to protect certain remarkable spaces. In the second phase\, the conservation sector has attempted to “come out of its shell” and engage more broadly with all human activities that have an impact on the biosphere. Various policies and instruments bear witness to this attempt at openness: biodiversity\, commons\, ecosystem services\, compensation\, participatory policies\, prioritization tools\, ecological frameworks\, etc.\nIn short\, conservation is now fully engaged with its connections to the world. If the environment cuts across the whole of the social issue\, then what place can or should be given to biodiversity conservation? The shift from an interest in isolation to a preoccupation with connections defines not only conservation policy\, but also environmental issues\, the paper will show. More broadly\, a politics of connectedness could represent a structural shift in how modern societies relate to the natural world.\nThis paper is largely based on the book Rodary E.\, 2019\, L’apartheid et l’animal. Vers une politique de la connectivité\, Éditions Wildproject\, Marseille. \nIsabelle Arpin* (LESSEM\, INRAE) – Protected areas as border zones. The example of an area ‘strictly protected for science’: the Lauvitel integral reserve (France) \nDrawing on recent research in the history of the field sciences\, environmental history\, political ecology and the philosophy of space\, this paper analyses protected areas as border zones. We define border zones as zones\, i.e. ‘portion(s) of the Earth that differs from what surrounds (them) because of some special quality but with the capacity to function for and as a whole’ (Etelain\, 2023)\, which are traversed by different objectives. We examine the dispositifs that constitute protected areas as border zones by composing the objective of nature conservation with other objectives. Our reflection is fuelled by the case study of a ‘strictly protected area for science’: the Lauvitel integral reserve within the Écrins national park (France)\, which we studied through documentary analysis\, two in-depth interview campaigns conducted in 2011 and 2024\, and observations of scientific activities within the reserve. We show that several complementary dispositifs contribute to making the reserve a strictly protected area for science: a dispositif that regulates access to the reserve\, operating mainly along its boundaries; a dispositif that adapts scientific activities to align with the objective of conservation within the reserve; and a dispositif that allows the reserve to exist beyond its boundaries\, through the establishment of facilities on its outer edge and the cultivation of reserve imaginaries. We highlight that dispositifs of conservation are also dispositifs of composition\, exploiting and accentuating differences across space. Our approach to protected areas as border zones enriches previous studies that have focused on dispositifs of conservation as ways of governing human and non-human life. \n* Research carried out with Quentin Bouchu and Kewan Mertens (CSI) \n \nIsabelle Arpin is a sociologist and researcher at LESSEM (Laboratoire Écosystèmes et Sociétés En Montagne) at the INRAE center in Grenoble. Her research\, which lies at the intersection of environmental sociology and the sociology of science\, focuses on the study and management of nature in the Anthropocene\, and in particular on the interface between scientists and nature managers. \nEstienne Rodary is a geographer and IRD research director at the UMR GRED (Governance\, Risk\, Environment\, Development). His research focuses on biodiversity conservation policies\, protected areas and political ecology\, initially in Africa and more recently in the Pacific. \nInformation and registration\n \nThe session will also be streamed by videoconference. SUMMARY:The CSI Guest Seminar welcomes Thomas Angeletti (IRISSO)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nThomas Angeletti \nCNRS Research Fellow at IRISSO\, Paris Dauphine University (PSL) \n\nto discuss his book \nL’invention de l’économie française \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Laurine Lièvremont \nQuatrième de couverture : Cet ouvrage se propose de dresser la « biographie » de l’économie française\, dont la présence nous est si familière qu’elle reste trop peu questionnée\, d’en défricher les origines\, de soulever les conséquences de son émergence et d’en tirer des leçons politiques pour l’avenir.\nComment se porte l’économie française ? \nBack cover: This book sets out to present the biography of the French economy\, which is so familiar to us that it is not often questioned. It teases out the origins\, explores the consequences of its emergence\, and examines the political lessons it might hold for the future.\nHow is the French economy doing? Is it seized up? In good shape? Analysts hail its growth momentum\, examine its slowdowns\, and note the warning signs of crisis. Indicators that have become familiar\, such as GDP\, give it substance.\nThe notion of a national economy is not\, however\, natural. It is the product of a slow process of institutionalization undertaken during the interwar period in the hope of giving the State room for maneuver and providing it with new areas of intervention.\nThe author explores the work of economists\, statisticians\, employer and union representatives\, political and administrative leaders who have accumulated evidence of the existence of an economic entity whose variations can be measured. After having served as a privileged framework for planning\, the primordial object thus created has also revealed its constraining side\, when in times of crisis the State undergoes the economy more than it acts on it. \nThomas Angeletti\, L’invention de l’économie française\, Les Presses de Sciences Po\, 2023. \n  \n\nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. SUMMARY:Seminar Digital environmental policies
DESCRIPTION:The seminar ‘Digital environmental policies’ will welcome \n  \nAdrien Luxey-Bitry (Spirals\, Univ. Lille\, INRIA) \n  \nOrganisation et maintenance collégiale \nd’une infrastructure communautaire de services numériques \nCollective organisation and maintenance of a community infrastructure of digital services \n \n\nSummary: As a member of the Collectif des Hébergeurs Alternatifs\, Transparents\, Ouverts\, Neutres et Solidaires (CHATONS) [Collective of Alternative\, Transparent\, Open\, Neutral and Supportive Hosting Providers]\, the Deuxfleurs association provides “essential” digital services to the public (websites\, mailboxes\, videoconferencing\, chat\, collaborative suite…). Its main originality lies in its minimalist infrastructure: 8 second-hand computers\, spread over 3 members’ homes\, honourably serve several hundred users. This minimalism comes at the price of a disconcerting technical complexity: it is hard to find simple solutions. In this seminar\, we will present the challenges and open questions facing our association\, both technically and organisationally: how can we raise awareness and overcome asymmetries of power\, knowledge and participation? How can we organise the maintenance of these digital services on a collegial and voluntary basis? How can we facilitate the arrival of new energies? This seminar will provide food for thought and\, we hope\, new avenues for future research in a number of disciplines. \n\nDate: Thursday 21 November from 2pm to 4pm\nThe seminar will be held by videoconference. Participation is upon registration only. \nLearn more about the seminar’s objectives and program \n  \nPhoto source: Adrien Luxey-Bitri’s personal web page \n

Limites planétaires: concept et matière à réflexion pour un futur soutenable [Planetary limits: conceptualising and reflecting on a sustainable future]\n \n10:15 am -10:45 am: Coffee break \n10:45 am -12:15 am: \nClaire Malwé (IODE\, Univ. de Rennes)\, thème “les limites planétaires dans le droit” [topic: ‘planetary limits in law’]\n \nOlivier Michel (LACL\, Université Paris-Est Créteil)\, thème : “limites planétaires et enseignement de l’informatique” [topic: ‘planetary limits and computer science education’]\n \n2:15 am – 2 pm: Lunch \nAteliers [Workshops]: around 2 pm – 2:15 pm \nEnd: 5 pm \nThe study day\nOver the last fifteen years or so\, the trajectory followed by the digital sector has been regularly questioned in the light of its growing footprint on the planet\, not only in terms of greenhouse gas emissions\, but also in terms of the strain placed on water and abiotic resources\, ecotoxicity\, etc. Faced with criticism\, manufacturers have responded by highlighting the efficiency gains achieved by optimizing production systems\, electronic equipment\, computer code\, buying back energy certificates\, etc. These approaches implicitly perpetuate the idea of limitless growth\, of a technical system that could free itself from resource constraints. In order to question this constantly renewed momentum towards limitless computing\, we propose to turn to research that focuses on the limits of the planetary system. Since the 2010s\, there has been a proliferation of work in this area\, and more recently a body of work has emerged that aims to operationalize what at first glance appears to be a scientific research program. What can be done about planetary limits? To what extent can a new field of research with fluctuating results be mobilized for practical purposes?\nThe day-long event is divided into two parts. The morning session will bring together researchers working on the notion of planetary limits in several fields: environment\, law and IT. In the afternoon\, the sustainable IT research community will gather for workshops on the desirability and the practicalities of IT within the limits of the planet. \nThe ALDIWO Projet (Anti-limits in the Digital World)\nALDIWO is a research project led by Clément Marquet and Florence Maraninchi and supported by the Mission pour les Initiatives Transverses et Interdisciplinaires (MITI) of the CNRS.\nResearch on the environmental impact of digital technology has taken two main approaches: (1) so-called ‘Green IT’ approaches\, which focus on optimizing the energy consumption of digital equipment during its use phase; (2) so-called ‘Green-by-IT’ approaches\, which aim to reduce the environmental impact of non-digital sectors through the use of digital technology.\nThese current perspectives are not sufficient to cover all possible futures for the role of digital technology environmental upheavals of the present and the future.: (1) there is no example in the history of digital technology where optimizations have not been accompanied by massive rebound effects that cancel out the gains of these optimizations; (2) the theoretical gains hoped for by proposing a new generation of digital equipment are not always realized in practice\, partly because one generation does not replace the previous one but adds to it\, at least for a while; (3) The potential reduction in environmental impact in the other areas where digital technology is being used to optimize is very difficult to estimate. It’s a risky gamble to bet that these reductions will be significant enough to prevent digital technology from reducing its own impact.\nIf digital technology is to play its part in the necessary reduction of global environmental impact\, it is imperative that we look beyond Green IT and Green-by-IT. There is a whole area of potential research in IT that constitutes “Undone Science” [1]. These topics can be explored from within the discipline of computer science\, by systematically re-examining the design choices made for old or modern systems\, by looking for potential optimization points that have not yet been explored\, by assessing the fragility of digital infrastructures in the face of drastic external constraints\, etc.\nNonetheless\, thinking only in terms of digital research\, we believe\, has two major shortcomings: (a) it is inherently limited to the practical and technological aspects of the question\, with no clear idea\, for example\, of how to take into account uses\, rebound effects\, the acceleration effects of all other sectors\, etc. (b) It suffers\, albeit sometimes unconsciously\, from a mindset that sees digital technologies as one (or even the only) means of opening up possible futures\, and any idea of limitations as an unrealistic pessimism or a reprehensible lack of confidence. However\, in his paper “Predictions Without Futures” [2]\, S. Hong perfectly describes how the imaginary in the world of technology\, far from opening up futures\, completely closes them.\nIn this project\, we therefore propose a multidisciplinary exploration of the notion of ‘limit’ in order to outline avenues for a research program that takes the project of digital sobriety seriously. \n[1] S. SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Fanny Charrasse (Saint-Louis University\, Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nFanny Charrasse \nSociologist\, post-doctoral fellow at Saint-Louis University\, Brussels \n\n  \nto discuss her book \n  \nLe retour du monde magique\nMagnétisme et paradoxes de la modernité \n\n \n  \nIntroduction to the discussion by Orso Roger and Lauranne Chaignon \nBack cover: Comment un commandant de police\, une responsable qualité et un éducateur sportif en viennent-ils à quitter leur emploi pour devenir magnétiseurs ? \nWhat makes a police commander\, a quality manager and a sports instructor quit their jobs to become magnetizers? Why is magnetism\, considered an “old fallacy” by the scientists commissioned by Louis XVI to study it on the eve of the French Revolution\, increasingly tolerated today? This book aims to understand and explain this phenomenon from a sociological point of view. For this purpose\, it presents the life stories of people who have become magnetizers. It describes in concrete terms their practice of mobilizing energy and sometimes spirits. Delving into fifty years of archives\, it then retraces the prosecution magnetizers faced up until the 1980s for the illegal practice of medicine\, and how they responded. Finally\, through interviews with medical practitioners\, members of the Ministry of Health and observations in oncology-radiotherapy\, it provides an analysis of the place currently held by magnetism in French society. \nThe final section of the book\, based on another survey of shamans on the Peruvian North Coast\, shows that taking an interest in magical practices presupposes to study their (partial) conversion to “naturalism”\, an ontology of the “Moderns” whose advent gave rise to the emergence of the nature vs. culture opposition. This involves describing its metamorphosis: how naturalism is becoming more “reflexive”\, that is self-aware and open to other ontologies. \nFanny Charrasse\, Le retour du monde magique. SUMMARY:Will health prevention be algorithmic?
DESCRIPTION:The field of mental health is particularly well-suited to developments in AI. Even if most of these approaches are still at an experimental stage\, they open up the prospect of personalised treatment paths\, both because of the increased predictive capacity for the evolution of illnesses and because of more appropriate exchanges with patients. A good example of this is the possibility of predicting episodes of severe depression using physiological factors processed by Machine Learning. However\, the complexity of the clinical and psycho-social factors to be taken into account makes the application of these innovations still tricky. On the other hand\, the analysis of data from medical records using natural language methods is progressing by leaps and bounds\, opening up complementary perspectives. \n  \npresented by: \n\n \n\n                          Guillaume Couillard                              Pr Étienne Minvielle \n      DG du GHU Paris Psychiatrie et Neurosciences                          Professeur à l’Ecole polytechnique\n \n                                                                                                       Directeur de Recherche CNRS\, Médecin \n                                                                                                       de santé publique \n \n                            Pr Pierre Alexis Geoffroy                   Pr Raphaël Gaillard              Pr Jean-Baptiste Masson \n                        GHU Paris Psychiatrie                      GHU Paris Psychiatrie         Chercheur à l’institut Pasteur \n                       et Santé Sciences                                 et Santé Sciences \n\nTo register
