SUMMARY:The seminar Economic expertise and environmental actions will welcome François Thoreau and Bregje van Veelen
DESCRIPTION:This session will explore the tentative ecological transformation of agricultural business by focusing on cattle breeding. It will consider the assemblage\, promises and limits of two infrastructures oriented towards the greening of farming: genomic infrastructure and green finance.   \nFrançois Thoreau (SPIRAL\, University of Liège) – Genomic infrastructure as ecological remediation ? \nGenomic infrastructure proposes to redefines bodies and the ways to approach them. However\, it does so in very different fashions for humans (medical endeavors) and for animals (livestock farming). Genomic infrastructure performs a distinct way of approaching life by decomposing it into large data ensembles and subsequently re-compositing it according to various uses – therapeutic\, productive\, etc. Focusing on the case of cattle breeding\, the presentation proposes to characterize this infrastructure as re-mediation\, that is as the manufacturing of peculiar kinds of relations\, hence\, as a proposal for new relational ethics. Specifically\, it will interrogate the ecological promises of genomic infrastructure: healthier animals with better resistance to stress and diseases and longer life-expectancy\, more biologically diverse herds\, or less greenhouse gas emissions. Would genomic infrastructure be\, finally\, the perfect technofix? \nBregje van Veelen (LUCSUS\, Lund University) – Milking the system? The role of green finance in decarbonizing agriculture \nDespite growing calls to make financial flows consistent with Paris Agreement goals\, to date little is known about the environmental and climate impact of ‘green finance’. Drawing on literature which explores how resources are assembled for investment\, I explore where green finance ‘lands’. I do this by tracing the implementation of a green financial instrument\, the Green Schuldschein\, issued by a multinational dairy company. I show that flows of green finance in the agricultural sector are unlikely to land in places where they can have the most significant climate impact\, but rather in places where they remain distant from nature’s unruly qualities. This highlights the importance of examining both financial and the extra-economic relations of the wider fields in which new ‘green’ financial instruments are situated to assess their potential environmental impact.   \n \nFrançois Thoreau (SPIRAL\, University of Liège) is Associate Professor at Liège University and a Research associate from the F.R.S.-FNRS with Spiral (ULiège). He works on  interdisciplinary issues with sciences and technologies in society\, at the locus between social sciences and health-environment issues. He was funded with a Starting Grant from the ERC (2021-2026) for the project “The BoS” (The Body Societal: Unfolding Genomics Infrastructure in Cattle Livestock Selection and Reproduction). (Source: Université de Liège) \nBregje van Veelen (LUCSUS\, Lund University) is Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS). She researches how low-carbon transition pathways emerge and evolve\, and how they can be implemented in a way that is democratic and fair. (Source: LUCSUS ) \nDate: Friday\, March 31\, 2023\, 2-4 p.m. \nVenue: Centre de Sociologie de l’Innovation\, 62 boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 Paris\, room Saint Jacques (lower level). \nThe session will also be streamed by videoconference. The link will be sent upon registration just before the seminar. \nThe session will be held in English. \nThe seminar is open to all. SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar will host Jean Frances and Stéphane Le Lay
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar will host \nJean Frances \nENSTA Bretagne (FOAP-CNAM)\, associate researcher at GSPR-EHESS \nand Stéphane Le Lay \nInstitut de psychodynamique du travail\, Paris \n  \nto discuss the book they co-authored with Jean-Marc Corsi \n  \nMa thèse en 180 secondes \nQuand la science devient spectacle \n \n\n\n\n\nIntroduction à la discussion : Victoria Brun \nBack cover: À l’heure des controverses scientifiques par tweets et messages Facebook pourquoi une enquête sociologique au long cours consacrée à « Ma thèse en 180 secondes » ? \nMy thesis in 180 seconds. When science becomes a spectacle \nAt a time of scientific controversies through tweets and Facebook messages\, why a long-term sociological investigation dedicated to “My thesis in 180 seconds”? Three researchers answered affirmatively. This book\, which results from four – unquiet – years of work\, details the rapid installation of a competitive and playful device in the field of higher education that encourages doctoral students to question their relationship with the rules of the scientific profession. Thanks to the intense work of communication “tricks of the trade” deployed during training courses provided by all the academic institutions involved in the competition\, the participants compete against one another in a tournament where scientific popularization regresses as the promising gesture\, so common in the neoliberal organization\, of project-based science takes hold. But where the “fun and sexy” show prevails\, what remains of the work ethic? \nJean-Marc Corsi\, Jean Frances et Stéphane Le Lay\, Ma thèse en 180 secondes. Quand la science devient spectacle\, Éditions du Croquant\, 2021. \nVenue: Mines Paris-PSL\, room (to be specified) and via videoconference for external audience. \nRegistration: please fill out this form (the link for the videoconference will be sent by email to the registrants prior to the meeting). \nThe seminar will be held in French. \nContact:  Jean Goizauskas or Clément Foutrel \nLearn more about the seminar’s objectives and program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:The CEA\, the University of Caen/MRSH\, Mines Paris-PSL\, the Dôme de Caen and the IRTS Normandie-Caen \nare pleased to invite you to participate in the  \nLaunch of Promethee \nProjet d’Observatoire Multidisciplinaire de l’Énergie\npour une Transition Humaine\, Économique et Écologique \n  \nA multidisciplinary observatory of energy sobriety \nand adaptation practices to energy crises \n  \nMarch 28\, 2023\nFondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme\n54 Bd Raspail\, 75006 Paris \nLancement de Prométhée \n  \nThe event will be held in French.\nPlease register (50 participants) by email: muriel.bollengier@unicaen.fr \n  \nThe current energy crisis is leading French consumers (households\, local authorities\, companies) to significantly reduce their energy consumption\, as encouraged by the public authorities\, particularly through “energy sobriety” actions. Such reductions in energy demand also appear to be decisive in the longer term to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050\, but require the adoption of new ways of using energy and possibly changing lifestyles. This crisis context and how energy consumers will adapt are worth observing closely as they will provide indications on the possible levers that can also be activated as a priority and in the long-term to face the climate crisis. \nFor more details download the event flyer \n  \nPour en savoir plus télécharger le flyer \nProgramme \n \n\n  \nImage : Pictoscribe\, « Thanks to Prometheus« \, 2019. SUMMARY:Session of the Seminar on Digital Environmental Policies will welcome Jeanne Oui (IRISSO\, IFRIS)
DESCRIPTION:The next session of the Seminar on Digital Environmental Policies organized by the Center for the Sociology of Innovation (CSI Mines Paris – PSL) and the Center for Internet and Society (CIS) will be held on\n \nThursday\, March 16\, 2023 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm\nby videoconference \n  \n  \nJeanne Oui\n(IRISSO\, IFRIS)\n \nEnvironmental governance through digital technologies\nThe case of cereal farming\nSummary: In a context where agriculture faces strong environmental controversies calling into question the objectives and techniques underlying agricultural productivism\, digital tools are put forward as one of the solutions that would facilitate the sector’s ecological transition. Satellites\, software\, decision support tools\, sensors and algorithms would allow for new modernity in agriculture\, both technologically and environmentally. At the crossroads of sociology and Science and Technology Studies (STS)\, Jeanne Oui examines the ecological promise of digital agriculture by delving into the knowledge\, markets and uses of these tools. Based on a qualitative survey of scientists\, companies and farmers in France and the United States\, her presentation will focus on the history of this technological promise for conventional agriculture\, and on the political and technical effects of an environmental governance of agricultural practices through digital technologies. \n  \nThe seminar will be held in French. Participation is upon registration only\, please use this form to register. \nLearn more about the seminar’s objectives and program. \nContact: Clément Marquet \n  \nPhoto credit : Jeanne Oui\, Cornell University-College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)

SUMMARY:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” will welcome Stéphanie Barral and Alice Valiergue
DESCRIPTION:This session will explore the carbon economy through the implementation and coordination of greenhouse gas offset markets. What economy and what markets are being structured around carbon\, and through what instruments? What role do expertise and criticism play in the development and evolution of these markets? \nStéphanie Barral (INRAE\, LISIS) – Low carbon label\, a level playing field?\n \nSince the mid-2010s\, the French Ministry of Ecology has been coordinating a voluntary greenhouse gas emissions offsetting device\, the Low Carbon Label. Its aims are\, on the one hand\, to encourage participation by a wide range of economic actors who are willing to reduce their carbon footprint or\, on the other hand\, to make virtuous changes in their production systems in order to benefit from the sale of carbon credits. The deployment of the Low Carbon Label is based on the construction of a strict equivalence system between offset and avoided emissions\, according to an accounting logic common in this type of instrument. In this presentation\, I will focus on the instrumentation of this equivalence and its implications in terms of coordination costs\, in order to discuss the economy of means at work to support environmental actions that are ultimately very limited. \nAlice Valiergue (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Santé Publique\, CSO) – With and Against Criticism: An Analysis of the Development of the Carbon Offset Market from 2000 to Present \n \nThis presentation will focus on the findings of a sociological survey on the carbon offset market\, and more specifically on companies that have no obligation to subscribe to these services but buy carbon credits from private operators\, NGOs or companies to offset their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The following question was the starting point of the research: if this market is controversial\, how can the growth of this market be explained and how can companies who seek to protect their reputation continue to buy carbon credits? Based on the survey findings\, the presentation will address the role played by criticism in the development of this market. \n \nStéphanie Barral (INRAE\, LISIS) is a sociologist and an INRAE researcher [INRAE is a national research institute for agriculture\, food and nutrition\, and the environment]. Her work focuses on this question: can environmental problems be resolved with economic instruments? Through the cases of ecological compensation and carbon offsetting\, she develops a sociology of environmental markets from three standpoints: 1) the articulation between environmental sciences\, public regulations and the market; 2) the selection effects that result from their implementation; 3) the transformation of the agricultural sector through the integration of farms into these new markets. \nAlice Valiergue (EHESP\, CSO) is a post-doctoral fellow at the Health Chair of Sciences Po. Her doctoral dissertation\, completed at the Centre de Sociologie des Organisations\, focused on the carbon offset market. She has since worked on the sociology of drugs in French Polynesia and her current post-doctoral research is on an experimentation of a new mode of healthcare reimbursement. She is the author of the book Compensation carbone. La fabrique d’un marché contesté (Sorbonne Université Presses). \n  \nThe session will also be streamed by videoconference. The link will be sent upon registration just before the seminar. \nThe seminar is open to all. Please register here to participate in this session. \nContact : Nassima Abdelghafour\, Béatrice Cointe\, Kewan Mertens ou Alexandre Violle \nFind out more about the objectives and the programme of the seminar \nPhoto source :  Stéphanie Barral\, LISIS ; Alice Valiergue\, CSO-Science Po. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Seminar Series on Digital Environmental Policies will welcome Thomas Beauvisage (Sense\, Orange Labs) et Jean-Samuel Beuscart (i3-SES\, Télécom Paris)
DESCRIPTION:In support of the strike against the pension reform\, and in agreement with the speakers\, the January 31 session of the Digital Environmental Policies seminar\, hosting Thomas Beauvisage (Sense\, Orange Labs) and Jean-Samuel Beuscart (SES Department\, Télécom Paris\, i3)\, for a presentation entitled “Measuring the environmental footprint of the digital economy: issues and controversies” is postponed to Thursday\, March 9\, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. \nSeminar Series on Digital Environmental Policies will welcome\n \nThomas Beauvisage (Sense\, Orange Labs) \net Jean-Samuel Beuscart (Département SES\, Télécom Paris\, i3) \nMesurer l’empreinte environnementale du numérique : \nenjeux et controverses \n(Measuring the environmental footprint of digital technology:issues and controversies) \n \nThe seminar is organized by Clément Marquet (CSI\, Mines Paris – PSL\, i3) and Sophie Quinton (Inria\, GDS EcoInfo)\, as part of the Politiques environnementales du numérique [Digital Environmental Policies] working group of the GDR Internet\, AI and Society. \nThe seminar will be held by videoconference. Participation is upon registration only. \nFor the past few years\, the environmental consequences of digital technologies have been the subject of increasing attention [1]\, calling into question the promise of a convergence between ecological and digital transition. While these alerts are not altogether new [2]\, only recently have they attracted the attention of French political authorities [3]. This policy interest arises as the State and economic players invest massively in large-scale digital projects such as 5G\, artificial intelligence\, the autonomous vehicle and the Internet of Things. So many projects whose consequences cannot be accurately anticipated\, but which in fact involve a proliferation of equipment and data. More generally\, there still is a lack of in-depth reflection on the direct environmental impacts (energy and resource requirements\, pollution\, etc.) and indirect impacts (optimizations driving the overall increase in production and consumption\, etc.) of digital technology. \nFor more information

SUMMARY:The next session of the Seminar on Digital Environmental Policies will welcome Patrick Brodie (University Dublin College)
DESCRIPTION:The next session of the Seminar on Digital Environmental Policies \n  \norganized by the Center for the Sociology of Innovation (CSI Mines Paris – PSL) \nand the Center for Internet and Society (CIS) will be held on \n \nThursday\, February 28\, from 3 to 5 pm \nby videoconference \n  \nPatrick Brodie (University Dublin College) \nEnvironment\, Territory\, \nand the Data/Energy Nexus in Ireland’s Borderlands \n \n  \n  \nSummary: In November 2020\, a video surfaced on Twitter showing the earth moving underneath the feet of a local hillwalker. The video was documenting a massive peat landslide at the border between County Donegal (in the Republic of Ireland\, ROI) and County Tyrone (in Northern Ireland\, NI)\, which was caused by the construction of the 19-turbine Meenbog Wind Farm. The landslide destroyed a vast swathe of active peat bog and polluted a significant watershed which spanned both sides of the border\, prompting governmental and legal action from agencies and organizations in ROI\, NI\, and the UK. \nA key piece of the puzzle\, however\, was that the Meenbog Wind Farm had in 2019 sold all its future energy to global logistics and cloud giant Amazon Web Services to power its data center operations in Dublin\, over 200km away from this wind farm site in rural Donegal. The data infrastructure company’s decarbonization efforts were transported along toxic fault lines of colonial partition\, the imagined perpetual growth of data systems having unintended consequences at the still-contested border between ROI and NI. By analyzing data center and energy policy\, public discourse around these infrastructural systems\, and drawing upon site-specific fieldwork\, this presentation will confront the territorial re-organization of political and environmental relations through emerging renewable energy and data entanglements. Engaging with vibrant discourses of “green extractivism” during the transition to renewable energy\, the talk will approach the region of Ireland where the peatslide occurred as a site of generative friction concerning what present and future extractive energy and data supply chains will look like\, who will bear their burdens\, and who will have agency in shaping them. \nFor more information and to register

SUMMARY:Cerna Research seminar will welcome Roxana Fernandez (ENSAE\, Crest)
DESCRIPTION:We have the pleasure to announce Roxana Fernandez (ENSAE\, Crest) as the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. \nThe ALUR law and the opening of Drives in the French grocery retail sector \n(with Bonnet\, C.\, Bouamra\, Z.\, Chambolle\, C.) \n  \nOver the last decade\, online grocery shopping has experienced a rapid expansion. To overcome the lack of success of delivery services\, many retailers have introduced Click-and-collect services\, allowing shoppers to buy online and later pick up their baskets at a chosen place and time. The provision of Click-and-collect services usually entails the construction of new facilities by either expanding stores or by building stand-alone pick-up points. In France\, this Click-and-collect service is called Drive and\, in 2018\, Drive represented 81% of online grocery sales against 19% of home delivery (Nielsen (2018)). The upsurge in the opening of Drives raised concerns to French policy-makers and pushed for a new regulation in 2014.  This paper assesses the impact of the ALUR law that constrains the opening of Drives with warehouses in France. We run difference-in-differences analyses over the period 2009-2017 and show that the law had a large and heterogeneous negative effect on the opening of Drive warehouses. Furthermore\, we analyze the effect on revenues and find that the ALUR law had a negative effect on revenue growth.  \n

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar will welcome Guillaume Blanc Tempora (UR 7468)\, Université Rennes 2
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar will welcome \nGuillaume Blanc \nTempora (UR 7468)\, Université Rennes 2 \n  \nto discuss his book \n  \nL’invention du colonialisme vert \nPour en finir avec le mythe de l’Éden africain \n  \n \n  \n  \nntroduction to the discussion: Clément Foutrel \nBack cover: L’histoire débute à la fin du XIXe siècle. \nThe invention of green colonialism. To put an end to the myth of the African Eden \nThe story begins at the end of the 19th century. Convinced that they had rediscovered in Africa the nature that had disappeared in Europe\, the colonists created the first natural parks on the continent\, from the Congo to South Africa. Then\, after the 1960s\, the former colonial administrators became international experts. Eden should be saved! But this Africa does not exist. There are no vast territories untouched by the presence of humans\, and only inhabited by hordes of wild animals that delight tourists on safaris. There are peoples\, who have been circulating for thousands of years\, have become breeders here or farmers there. However\, these men\, women and children will be – and still are – expelled by the thousands from the African natural parks\, where they are now subjected to the daily violence of eco-guards supported by Unesco\, the WWF and many other NGOs. \nBased on a set of mostly unpublished archives and life stories\, this book brings to light the contradictions of developed countries that destroy in their own countries the nature they believe they are protecting over there\, prolonging\, with an astonishing good conscience\, the scheme of a new kind of colonialism: green colonialism. \nGuillaume Blanc\, L’invention du colonialisme vert. Pour en finir avec le mythe de l’Éden africain\, Flammarion\, 2020. \n\nDate: Tuesday February 14\, 2023\, from 11am to 1pm. \nVenue: (Room to be specified) and via videoconference for external audience. \nRegistration: please fill in this form (the connection link for the videoconference will be sent by email to registered participants). \n  \nThe seminar will be held in French. \nContact:  Jean Goizauskas or Clément Foutrel \nLearn more about the seminar’s objectives and program. \n\nPhoto source: Guillaume Blanc\, Université Rennes 2 \n

SUMMARY:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” will welcome Antoine Missemer and Daniela Russ
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” will welcome \n  \nAntoine Missemer and Daniela Russ \n  \nEnergy Transitions and Planning \n  \nAdopting a historical perspective spanning several parts of the world\, this seminar will explore the inclusion of energy in economic thought and organization.  How have economists and engineers approached energy issues? How has this influence the spatial\, industrial\, and political organization of the economy? \nThe seminar will be held in English. \nAntoine Missemer (CIRED) – Towards a decompartimentalized history of energy transitions in economics \nSince the 19th century at least\, energy issues have been at the heart of economic and industrial dynamics. They can also be considered universal\, in the sense that the access to energy sources\, their conversion into useful forms\, and their distribution among people can be important social\, economic and political concerns (almost) all around the world. The ETRANHET project (ERC StG 2022-2027) aims to explore the way the discipline of economics\, and economists\, have dealt with energy issues\, and influenced policy making on the matter\, since the early 19th century\, in different parts of the world (5 areas: Western Europe\, the British Isles\, North America\, Latin America\, South-East Asia). This presentation will consist in introducing the architecture and main research questions of the ETRANHET project\, plus a few preliminary results through one or two case studies in Northern Europe and Latin America. \nDaniela Russ (Global and European Studies Institute\, University of Leipzig) – Designing Energy Regions: The Planning of Economic Space in the Soviet Union \nIn their attempt to build the first socialist economy\, Soviet engineers and economists continued an existing Russian tradition of spatial economic planning. At the same time\, they parted from previous planning theorists in emphasizing the role of energy and put forward a system of economic regions shaped and structured by energetic principles \n  \n  \nAntoine Missemer is a researcher in economics at CNRS\, CIRED – Centre international de recherche sur l’environnement et le développement (UMR 8568). His work mainly deals with the history of environmental\, energy and natural resource economics\, in relation to 21st-century debates on the ecological transition. He published Les Économistes et la fin des énergies fossiles (1865-1931) (Classiques Garnier\, 2017)\, Faire l’économie de l’environnement (with E. Chiapello and A. Pottier\, eds.\, Presses des Mines\, 2020) and more recently A History of Ecological Economic Thought (with M. P. Vianna Franco\, Routledge\, 2023). He is the PI of the ERC Starting Grant project ETRANHET – Energy Transitions in the History of Economic Thought 19th-20th c.) (2022-2027)\, hosted by CNRS. \nDaniela Russ is assistant professor and historical sociologist at the University of Leipzig’s Global and European Studies Institute. Before\, she was a post-doc at the University of Toronto and a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Columbia University. She holds a M.A. in Social Sciences from Humboldt University in Berlin and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Bielefeld. In 2020\, she was awarded the IEEE Fellowship in the History of Computing and Technology. \n  \nContact : Nassima Abdelghafour\, Béatrice Cointe\, Kewan Mertens ou Alexandre Violle

SUMMARY:Cerna Research seminar will welcome Claire Chambolle (INRAE\, Crest)
DESCRIPTION:We have the pleasure to announce Claire Chambolle (INRAE\, Crest) as the next speaker in our CERNA Research Seminar. The seminar will take place on Wednesday 01/02/2023 at 16:00 in Salle Vendome. \n  \nClaire Chambolle (INRAE\, Crest) will talk about: \n  \nBuyer Power and Product Selection in Interlocking Relationships \n(with Clémence Christin and Hugo Molina) \n  \nWe study a model of interlocking vertical relationships between manufacturers and retailers where the latter select which product(s) to distribute on the market. We highlight that the degree of substitution among retailers as well as their bargaining power vis-à-vis manufacturers play a critical role on retail assortments. When both are sufficiently weak\, we show that at least one retailer has an incentive to restrict its assortment which decreases product variety and leads to higher prices for consumers. We also analyze the effect of downstream consolidation through buying groups and retail merger and derive policy implications. \n  \nClaire will be available for meetings so let me know if you want to have a slot. Such meetings are particularly important for PhD students. Even if our speakers are not always related to the exact field we are working in\, these discussions are important to communicate research\, discuss (early) results and methods\, and establish networks; regardless if the ultimate goal is to work for research\, policy\, NGOs or companies. \n  \n  \nHave a nice day and see you there!

SUMMARY:CERNA Research Seminar will welcome Daniel Stoehlker (European Commission)
DESCRIPTION:The Pass-Through of Temporary VAT Rate Cuts: Evidence from German Supermarket Retail \n(joint with Clemens Fuest and Florian Neumeier) \nOn 1 July 2020\, value added tax (VAT) rates were reduced in Germany to fight the economic consequences of the Corona pandemic. The VAT rate reduction was only temporary\, though\, and rates went up to their previous level on 1 January 2021. We study the price effects of the temporary VAT rate reduction in German supermarket retail using an extensive web-scrapped data set covering the daily prices of roughly 130\,000 products. To identify the causal price effects\, we compare the development of prices in Germany to those in Austria. Our findings indicate an asymmetric price response to the VAT rate cut and subsequent increase. The reduction of VAT rates led to a price decrease of roughly 1.3%\, implying that about 70% of the tax cut were passed on to consumers. In contrast\, the price effect of the VAT increase was only about half that size. We also document that the pass-through of the VAT reduction was higher in highly competitive product markets. \n\nThe paper is attached for your interest: wp-2020-341-fuest-neumeier-stoehlker-temporary-vat-rate-cuts

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar will welcome Geneviève Pruvost Cems-EHESS
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar will welcome \nGeneviève Pruvost \nCems-EHESS \n  \nto discuss her book \n  \nQuotidien politique \n\nFéminisme\, écologie\, subsistance \n  \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Solène Sarnowksi \nQuatrième de couverture : Fin des sociétés paysannes\, cuisines équipées\, bétonisation des terres arables\, effacement des savoir-faire et cosmogonies autochtones\, ignorance des rythmes du monde vivant… \nDaily Politics. Feminism\, ecology\, subsistence \nBack cover (our translation): The end of peasant societies\, equipped kitchens\, the pouring of concrete across arable land\, the erasure of indigenous know-how and cosmogonies\, the ignorance of the rhythms of the living world… These various phenomena that we are learning to deplore today are definitely linked\, as ecofeminist theorists\, critics of industrial modernity\, have been telling us for half a century. This book is devoted to their thoughts\, which are little known in France\, as well as to the existential and political lessons to be drawn from them. The author explores contemporary ecological and anti-capitalist alternatives with the view to demonstrating that daily life is a founding political terrain. \nWithout the politics of everyday life\, without the collective and radical reconstruction of our subsistence\, there will be no egalitarian or ecological society. Contrary to accepted ideas\, it is not the generalization of wage-earning that has given us access to consumer society and comfort\, but colonialism and female domestic work. Another political organization of life and relations to nature is possible. On the condition that it is redistributed\, anchored in a community in contact with a biotope and its uses\, subsistence work thus rethought becomes a factor of emancipation. The fabrication of daily life then appears for what it is: a revolutionary issue. \nGeneviève Pruvost\, Quotidien Politique. SUMMARY:Cerna Lunch Seminar will welcome Felix Poege (Postdoctoral Associate at the Technology & Policy Research Initiative at Boston University)
DESCRIPTION:The  16th December at 12h00 in Salle Vendome\, we will have a lunch seminar out of the usual schedule by Felix Poege (Postdoctoral Associate at the Technology & Policy Research Initiative at Boston University). You can find his profile here: https://www.felixpoege.eu/ \nFelix will present his job market paper about “Competition and Innovation: The Breakup of IG Farben” \nAbstract The relationship between competition and innovation is difficult to disentangle\, as exogenous variation in market structure is rare. The 1952 breakup of Germany’s leading chemical company\, IG Farben\, represents such a disruption. After the Second World War\, the Allies occupying Germany imposed the breakup because of IG Farben’s importance for the German war economy instead of standard antitrust concerns. In technology areas where the breakup reduced concentration\, patenting increased strongly\, driven by domestic firms unrelated to IG Farben. An analysis of patent texts shows that an increased propensity to patent does not drive the effect. Descriptively\, IG Farben’s successors increased their patenting activities as well\, and their patenting specialized relative to the pre-breakup period. The results are consistent with a breakup-induced innovation increase by the IG Farben successors\, which then spilled over to the wider chemical industry. \nLink to full paper: https://www.felixpoege.eu/workingpaper/#competition-and-innovation-breaking-ig-farben \nBlog summary: on https://www.promarket.org/2022/10/05/new-research-shows-the-breakup-of-ig-farben-increased-innovation/ \nAks the link \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Digital environmental policies” will welcome \n  \nDjilali Taïar (CDEP\, Université d’Artois) \n  \nLa régulation environnementale du numérique en France \nEnvironmental regulation of digital technology in France \n \n  \nSummary: As of the end of 2021\, two laws have given regulatory authorities (Arcep and Arcom) the mandate of supporting digital actors in adopting more environmentally friendly practices. Despite the introduction of a binding environmental data collection regime\, reducing the sector’s footprint still depends on the goodwill of private actors. Nevertheless\, the regulatory authorities’ role should be strengthened to regulate their practices. This presentation aims to establish the current status of the new legal regime applicable to digital professionals\, while looking at whether the means implemented are up to the expressly sought-after objective: reducing the environmental footprint of digital technology. \n  \n\n\n\nDate: December 15\, 2022\, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm \nThe seminar will be held by videoconference. SUMMARY:CERNA Research Seminar will welcome Daniel Herrera (Dauphine)
DESCRIPTION:The effects of banning loss-leader pricing in grocery retailing markets \n(joint with Jorge Florez\, Banco de la Republica) \nHalf of the states of the U.S. ban loss-leader pricing because it is considered predatory. Recent theoretical evidence challenges this view\, suggesting that loss-leading may arise as a result of a discrimination of consumers with different shopping costs. We examine the effects of banning loss-leader pricing in grocery retailing markets on supermarket pricing. To this end\, we use scanner data on supermarket sales in the United States and carry out two empirical exercises. First\, we exploit an exogenous shock in the below-cost selling law in Wisconsin between 2009 and 2010 to identify the causal effect on prices on milk. Our results suggest that prices increase as a result of the ban of below-cost selling. Second\, we estimate a structural model of demand and supply of multiple products allowing for complementarities across products. The main challenge that is common in the estimation of demand models in this type of setting is a high-dimensional choice set. We propose a novel solution to this challenge and provide evidence of its effectiveness based on Monte Carlo simulations. Using our demand estimation approach\, we find negative margins consistent with competitive cross-subsidization across products within a retailer chain. Our counterfactual results suggest that banning below-cost pricing rises equilibrium prices.  \n

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar will welcome Annemarie Mol
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar will welcome \nAnnemarie Mol \nFaculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences\, University of Amsterdam \nProgramme group: Anthropology of Health\, Care and the Body \n  \nTo discuss her book \n  \nEating in Theory \n  \n\n\n\nIntroduction to the discussion by Jean Goizauskas \nBack cover: As we taste\, chew\, swallow\, digest\, and excrete\, our foods transform us\, while our eating\, in its turn\, affects the wider earthly environment. In Eating in Theory Annemarie Mol takes inspiration from these transformative entanglements to rethink what it is to be human. Drawing on fieldwork at food conferences\, research labs\, health care facilities\, restaurants\, and her own kitchen table\, Mol reassesses the work of authors such as Hannah Arendt\, Maurice Merleau-Ponty\, Hans Jonas\, and Emmanuel Levinas. They celebrated the allegedly unique capability of humans to rise above their immediate bodily needs. Mol\, by contrast\, appreciates that as humans we share our fleshy substance with other living beings\, whom we cultivate\, cut into pieces\, transport\, prepare\, and incorporate—and to whom we leave our excesses. This has far-reaching philosophical consequences. Taking human eating seriously suggests a reappraisal of being as transformative\, knowing as entangling\, doing as dispersed\, and relating as a matter of inescapable dependence. \nAnnemarie Mol\, Eating in Theory\, Duke University Press\, 2021. \n  \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. SUMMARY:Digital Commons and Ecological Transition
DESCRIPTION:This study day is organized by the working groups of the GDR Internet\, AI & Society\, Politiques environnementales du numérique [Digital Environmental Policy]\, coordinated by Clément Marquet (CSI\, Mines Paris – PSL\, i3) and Sophie Quinton (Inria\, GDS EcoInfo)\, and Politiques des communs numériques [Digital Commons Policy]\, coordinated by Cristiana Sappa (IÉSEG School of Management) and Sébastien Shulz (LISIS\, Université Gustave Eiffel) \n\n\n\n\nFriday\, November 25\, 2022 from 9am to 5pm. \nCentre Internet et Société\, 59-61 Rue Pouchet\, Paris 17e. \n Please note that registration is required \nThe event will be held in French\, but it will be possible to address questions in English. \nObjective\nThe objective of this study day is twofold. On the one hand\, to question the links between the digital commons and the ecological transition through dialogue between interdisciplinary researchers and practitioners directly involved in this connection. On the other hand\, to explore the first avenues towards a common set of research issues and to design a research program. To that end\, the study day will be organized in two sessions. The morning session will be dedicated to three presentations that will frame the day and open up avenues for reflection. The afternoon session is organized around three participative workshops. \nArgument\nContext. The digital commons movement is rooted at the crossroads between the American academic and Internet worlds. This movement advocates open access\, peer-to-peer production and shared governance of digital resources in the networked information space. Free software\, Wikipedia or the Open Street Map are paradigmatic examples of these arrangements\, called “digital commons” by theorists of the movement. In the 2000s\, their claims were translated outside the academic and activist spheres of the Internet\, for example within the worlds of cultural production or politics. But for the past few years\, a new phenomenon has been emerging that has not yet been fully explored by research: mobilizations seeking to link the digital commons to the challenges of the ecological transition (Labaeye\, 2020). We have identified three forms of articulation between digital commons and ecological transition. First\, a number of digital commons projects integrate ecological concerns. For example\, free software communities try to reduce the ecological footprint of their production through “eco-design” practices\, and are sometimes critical of the strong growth of the digital sector with regard to its environmental and climatic consequences (Maurel\, 2020). Secondly\, we see the creation of “cooperative platforms” that are being specifically set up to respond to ecological issues. This is the case of Mobicoop\, an open source software developed by a SCIC [Société Coopérative d’Intérêt Collectif\, or cooperative community-oriented enterprise]\, whose objective is to develop shared mobility by offering an open platform (Vercher-Chaptal et al.\, 2021). Third\, digital commons are being used in distributed manufacturing projects. Original partnerships are being built between academics\, engineers\, and practitioners in the field of agriculture to co-produce open source blueprints for more environmentally friendly farm machinery (Benkler\, 2006; Giotitsas\, 2019). More generally\, there are many other examples we could cite of distributed manufacturing\, allowing for reduced transportation logistics costs\, in the various branches of the “maker”\, “fablab”\, or more generally “third place” movements (Scaillerez et al.\, 2017; Lallement\, 2018; Kostakis et al.\, 2018). \n  \nIssues. However\, these three convergences between the digital commons and ecological transitions are not self-evident. To begin with\, ecological and digital transitions have rarely been thought of together. On the contrary\, classical representations of the Internet tend to make a distinction between the physical and virtual worlds. A naive perspective presented “cyberspace” as the sphere of the mind where the attributes of the body had no hold. From a more sociological point of view\, the worlds of activist Internet and political ecology have been quite hermetic\, with a few rare but notable exceptions (Gorz\, 2003). Not to mention that an increasing number of voices are being raised to criticize the environmental impact of digital technology and its physical infrastructure (Flipo\, 2021; Allard et al.\, 2022). This raises the question of how different social worlds (developing and promoting digital technologies and/or working on the ecological transition) dialogue with each other. What are the common grammars and the stumbling blocks? From a more empirical point of view\, what tensions arise from these attempts to hybridize issues and representations? How are communities of practice structured? What are the emerging new institutional\, economic or partnership forms? \n\n\nProgram\n9:00 am – Welcome breakfast \n9:20 am – Morning plenary session \n\nIntroductory address followed by three presentations\nCorinne Vercher-Chaptal\, university professor in management and specialist in cooperative platforms\nAgnès Crépet\, computer scientist and software sustanability fairphone manager\nVasilis Kostakis\, researcher in political economy at Tallin University of Technology (TalTech)\, associate researcher at the Berkman Klein Center of Harvard\, director of the ERC research project Cosmolocalism\n\n12:45 am – Lunch (not paid for) in a booked restaurant \n2:30 pm – Afternoon workshops \n\nCooperative platforms supporting the transition\nEcological issues addressed by digital commons collectives\nOpen-source distributed manufacturing\n\n4:30 pm – Conclusions and closing remarks in plenary session \n5:00 pm – Closing drink \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBibliography\nBenkler Y.\, 2006\, The Wealth of Networks. SUMMARY:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” will welcome Benoît Dauguet and Fanny Guillet
DESCRIPTION:The seminar “Economic expertise and environmental actions” will welcome \n  \nBenoît Dauguet and Fanny Guillet \n  \nEnvironmental compensation \n  \nThis session will question the tools and practices of valuation of nature that inform environmental compensation operations – that is\, the supposed neutralization of environmental damage through the restoration or repair of natural spaces. What are the operations of categorization\, commensuration\, and planning that are used to produce ecological neutrality\, and with what consequences? \nBenoît Dauguet: Measures against Nature \nEcological compensation is presented as the solution to reconcile economic development and nature protection. Its logic is simple: if a development project degrades the environment\, all that needs to be done is to put in place a certain number of environmental measures that would compensate for this damage.  Far from being politically neutral\, this system is in fact based on a deadly logic that makes developers the main actors in nature protection. \nFanny Guillet: Ecological Neutrality Policies: Production of metrics and service markets \nPolicies for ecological neutrality are gathering momentum among the instruments of environmental public action. Behind ambitious formulas such as Zero Net Pollution\, Zero Net Artificialization or Zero Net Loss of Biodiversity\, a system of categorization and commensurability of nature is put in place. This process is as much reductive as it is necessary for policies to be enforceable. Using the case of environmental assessment\, which endorses “Zero Net Loss of Biodiversity”\, we will analyze the negotiations underlying the co-design of categories\, torn by the dual challenge of ecological relevance and operationality for professional actors. \n  \n\n\n\nBenoît Dauguet is the author of a book “Mesures contre nature. Mythes et rouages de la compensation écologique” published by Grevis in 2021. In 2020\, he completed a thesis entitled “La compensation écologique: conception\, inscription et institution de l’équivalence écologique” [Ecological compensation: conception\, inscription and institution of ecological equivalence] at the Centre Alexandre Koyré (EHESS). \nFanny Guillet is a researcher at the Centre d’Écologie et des Sciences de la Conservation (CESCO)\, UMR 7204 (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle\, CNRS\, Sorbonne University). DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the publication of her book Les Nouveaux modes de management et d’organisation : innovation ou effet de mode (available on 24/11)\, researcher Suzy Canivenc interviewed Romain and Clément Meyer (25 and 22 years old) about their incredible odyssey in search of managerial innovation: 6 months of travel\, 8 countries crossed\, 100 organizations met and more than 200 interviews carried out with leaders\, managers\, employees and experts of managerial transformation. \n \nBreaking codes and inventing the management of tomorrow is an aspiration and a reality shared in many countries. \n  \nIn this issue of Repère n°10\, The Odyssey of Managerial Innovation\, you will discover the most common practices encountered internationally\, what they bring to companies and employees\, as well as some of the difficulties encountered in implementing them and making them work. Through the lively testimony of Romain and Clément\, you will also feel what the expectations of young people are with regard to work and companies. \n  \nFree admission (within the limits of available seats) and the possibility of following the video zoom\, but registration is required with Barbara.Toussaint@minesparis.psl.eu \n  \n

SUMMARY:First session of the NOS team research seminar will welcome : Arthur Forges\, PhD student at Télécom Paris
DESCRIPTION:The first research seminar of the NOS team will be held this Thursday\, November 24\, between 12:00 and 14:00 in room 3A306. We welcome : \nArthur Forges\, PhD student at Télécom Paris \nwill speak on the topic :\n“Telling the story on YouTube. From the effervescence of history to narrative videography”. \n\nYou will find a summary of his talk below. \nPlease let us know if you will be attending. \nArthur Forges – Telling the story on YouTube. From the effervescence of history to narrative videography.\nWhether it is the object of fiction\, instrumentalized by politicians\, or reappropriated by video artists on YouTube\, it is clear that history in public spaces is not often the work of historians\, who are relatively absent. However\, history is today as visible and protean as it is multilingual. This is not surprising\, since history has never been the monopoly of historians and\, from the beginning\, it has been disseminated in many “forms” – a term that we will try to define. These forms surprise – and surprise – not only from the point of view of methodology and the polysemy that accompanies the term “history”\, but also by their circulation\, their potential\, their success and their performance. This is why in this seminar we propose to describe and interrogate the ways in which YouTubers running a history channel organize and reappropriate the historical sciences. \n  \nRegistration :
