SUMMARY:The Chair for the Future of Industry and Work at Mines-Paris PSL invites you to session 8 of the seminar Autonomy and Responsibility in Organizations:
DESCRIPTION:The Chair for the Future of Industry and Work at Mines-Paris PSL invites you to session #8 of the seminar Autonomy and Responsibility in Organizations:\n  \nNutriset Group\, a mandate for transformation? \n  \nFaustine Lescanne-Malo (Nutriset Group Transformation Manager) and Gautier Joniot (Director at Kea & Partners) \n  \nRegistration is free but mandatory via the following link: https://forms.gle/83kz1WExtTz9LhR47 \n*Those wishing to attend in person must have a health pass and wear a mask. \n \nIf you have any questions\, please contact: chaire-fit2@mines-paristech.fr \n  \n\nPresentation of the session:  \nIn 2015\, Nutriset was given an extended corporate purpose with a mandate to “provide effective solutions to nutrition and malnutrition issues”. In 2020\, in order to meet ever more nutritional needs\, in a changing and increasingly competitive environment\, the Nutriset Group has committed to a transformation process with a deadline of 2022: to give each structure of the Group the additional means to develop. The firm Kéa & Partners is assisting it in this objective. During the process\, one question quickly became central: how can the mandate be used to support the transformation? \nPresentation of the seminar : \nThe Chair for the Future of Industry and Work at Mines – Paris Sciences et Lettres organizes a monthly seminar on the rise of autonomy in organizations. The objective of this seminar is to discuss concrete experiences of setting up an organization that favors employee autonomy by analyzing the difficulties encountered\, the impact on operational performance and on employee satisfaction\, the construction of “words to say it”… During the first year\, we will be interested in companies where different national or professional traditions coexist and in the support of middle management \n

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar will host Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent Philosopher and historian of science\, professor emeritus at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar will host \nBernadette Bensaude-Vincent \nPhilosopher and historian of science\, professor emeritus at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne \nto discuss her book \nTemps-Paysage \nPour une écologie des crises \nIntroduction to the discussion : Clément Foutrel \nBack cover: Qu’il tende vers le progrès ou vers l’effondrement\, nous voyons le temps sous la forme d’une flèche\, et nous le supposons donc unique et linéaire\, maîtrisé\, dominé\, comme vu de dehors\, c’est-à-dire de nulle part. Symbiose\, 2021. \n  \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. It is open upon registration. \nGuest seminar programme \n  \n  \nRegistration: please fill out this form \nContact: Carole-Anne Tisserand or Abdoulaye Diaw \n  \nPhoto source: Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent\, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne \n  \n

SUMMARY:Conference on the book "L'entreprise\, l'ingénieur et le pouvoir" by Olivier Zarrouati and Mario Le Glatin
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \nGuests: Olivier Zarrouati and Mario Le Glatin \nThis book is the result of a particular research work and in an original form: a conversation between two engineers formerly employed by Zodiac Aerospace. In 5 acts\, the authors conduct a questioning tinged with engineering and management sciences on what makes a decision\, management\, collective action\, strategy\, responsibility of the leader\, and governance in a group of SMEs such as Zodiac Aerospace. Olivier Zarrouati approaches these key issues with the experience and reflexivity of top managers\, and with the singular viewpoint of an engineer\, where a relationship to analysis and design reasoning are combined\, never independent of human and personal values. \nConference organised as a videoconference \nRegistration: chaire-tmci@mines-paristech.fr \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar will host Angèle Christin\, Assistant professor of communication at Stanford University
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar will host \nAngèle Christin \nAssistant professor en communication à Stanford University \nto discuss her book \nMetrics at Work: Journalism and the Contested Meaning of Algorithms \nIntroduction to the discussion by Clément Gasull \n \nBack cover: When the newonline\, journalists suddenly learned what their audiences actually liked\, through algorithmic technologies that scrutinize web traffic and activity. Has this advent of audience metrics changed journalists’ work practices and professional identities? In Metrics at Work\, Angèle Christin documents the ways that journalists grapple with audience data in the form of clicks\, and analyzes how new forms of clickbait journalism travel across national borders. \nDrawing on four years of fieldwork in web newsrooms in the United States and France\, including more than one hundred interviews with journalists\, Christin reveals many similarities among the media groups examined—their editorial goals\, technological tools\, and even office furniture. Yet she uncovers crucial and paradoxical differences in how American and French journalists understand audience analytics and how these affect the news produced in each country. American journalists routinely disregard traffic numbers and primarily rely on the opinion of their peers to define journalistic quality. Meanwhile\, French journalists fixate on internet traffic and view these numbers as a sign of their resonance in the public sphere. Christin offers cultural and historical explanations for these disparities\, arguing that distinct journalistic traditions structure how journalists make sense of digital measurements in the two countries. \nContrary to the popular belief that analytics and algorithms are globally homogenizing forces\, Metrics at Work shows that computational technologies can have surprisingly divergent ramifications for work and organizations worldwide. \nAngèle Christin\, Metrics at Work: Journalism and the Contested Meaning of Algorithms\, Princeton UP\, 2020 \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. It is open upon registration. \nGuest seminar programme

SUMMARY:i3 seminar “Analysis of online participation” will welcome Julia Velkovska and Moustafa Zouinar
DESCRIPTION:3 seminar “Analysis of online participation” will welcome \nJulia Velkovska and Moustafa Zouinar \n  \n \nJulia Velkovska is a researcher at the SENSE laboratory (Sociology and Economics of Networks and Services) of Orange Labs and associate researcher at the Center for the Study of Social Movements (CEMS-IMM) à l’EHESS. \nMoustafa Zouinar is a researcher at the SENSE laboratory of Orange Labs and Associate Professor\, Cnam (Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers) \n  \nPaper to read in preparation for the session: \n\nJulia Velkovska et Moustafa Zouinar\, en collaboration avec Clair-Antoine Veyrier (2020). \n\nAbstract: This article makes an empirical contribution to the sociology of conversational artificial intelligence by presenting a video-ethnographic research on the everyday use of voice assistants in twenty-two French households over a span of three years. The results belie the ideas conveyed in the public space by the proponents of these devices\, who consider the interactions with them as natural conversations\, thus obfuscating the complexity of real uses. We suggest describing these interactions as ‘simulacrum’ of conversation that creates an “illusion of conversation” as well as an “illusion of intuitiveness”\, which are sources of interactional problems. We highlight the significant “work” that users make to discover and interact with these devices. This research highlights a new facet of user’s work characteristic of the proliferation of voice services: that of managing and coordinating multiple conversational agents. This user work makes up the invisible side of relationships with conversational machines. The article also describes the appropriation processes that gradually establish voice assistants in everyday activities and routines. It identifies the forms of transformation of practices and the social inscription of these machines within family groups\, characterized by an asymmetry of uses. \nTo receive the texts and indicate your attendance at this seminar session\, please register here.  \n  \ni3 seminar “Analysis of online participation”\nThe “Analysis of Online Participation” (APeL) seminar aims to develop reflection on approaches to the use of data about the online usage and participation. The seminar is a place for researchers from various backgrounds to meet and exchange knowledge\, practices and know-how. At each session\, the seminar guests present and discuss the “making of” of one of their researches: construction of the survey\, specificities of the data engineering implemented\, tools for capturing / building corpora\, analysis strategies and tools used\, etc \nInformation and registration\nThe seminar is open to all. Please register here to participate in this session. \n \n  \nThe session will be held (in French) by videoconference. \nContact: Alexandre Mallard\, Valérie Beaudouin or Cécile Chamaret

DESCRIPTION:i3 seminar “Analysis of online participation” will welcome \nMathieu Brugidou and Philippe Suignard \n  \nWhat can word embedding algorithms do \nfor the sociological analysis of texts? \nMathieu Brugidou is a senior researcher at EDF R&D\, Energy Technology and Society Research Group\, and a research associate at the Pacte laboratory (UMR 5194)\, CNRS-Université Grenoble Alpes- Sciences Po Grenoble. \nPhilippe Suignard is an Engineer and Research Expert at the ICAME Department (Business Innovation\, Market and Environmental Analysis)\, EDF R&D. \n  \nPapers to read in preparation for the session: \n\nBrugidou Mathieu\, Suignard Philippe\, Escoffier Caroline\, et Charaudeau Lou (2020). Paper to appear in Statistique et Société. \n\nAbstract: In this presentation\, we propose to further the evaluation of the contribution of so-called “word embedding” algorithms to the sociological analysis of texts: on the one hand\, by confronting the results of the semantic analyses of these algorithms to the now well-known approaches of textual data analysis or textometry; on the other hand\, by focusing on what is one of the main obstacles to the sociological analysis of the web: the difficulty to characterize sociologically the authors of statements from the web. To this end\, we analyze statements from “civic tech” platforms – i.e. the “Grand Débat National” [Great National Debate]\, a governmental platform\, and its political and algorithmic riposte provided by a collective of Gilets jaunes\, the “Vrai Débat” [The Real Debate]. A third corpus from the “Entendre la France” [Hearing France] platform\, with the same design as the “Grand Débat National” and documented in terms of socio-political properties\, allows us to characterize the speakers according to their discourses and to attempt to predict\, through machine learning approaches\, “pseudo-properties” assigned to the contributors of the “Grand Débat National”. At each session\, the seminar guests present and discuss the “making of” of one of their researches: construction of the survey\, specificities of the data engineering implemented\, tools for capturing / building corpora\, analysis strategies and tools used\, etc. \nInformation and registration\nThe seminar is open to all. SUMMARY:The Chair of Business Theory invites to its next seminar session: "Business\, Responsibility and Civilization
DESCRIPTION:The Chair of Business Theory is pleased to invite you to the next session of the seminar “Business\, Responsibility and Civilization  \n April 7\, 2021\, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm \n  \n\nWhat the Anthropocene is doing to innovation management \nwith \n \nAurélien Acquier \nProfessor at ESCP Business School \nà \nMINES ParisTech (via zoom) \n60 Boulevard Saint Michel\, 75006 PARIS \nThe context of the Anthropocene puts the question of innovation and its relationship to progress in radical tension. On the one hand\, the entry into a capitalism of intensive innovation is one of the commercial manifestations of the “great acceleration”\, which accentuates human pressures on ecosystems. On the other hand\, the capacity of innovation to respond to the challenges of the Anthropocene is also being questioned. Indeed\, the Anthropocene reveals new properties of so-called “responsible” innovations: enthusiasm/disappointment loops\, displacement of issues\, and the need to legitimize innovation. We will then explore three axes – political governance\, the role of public action and access to common goods – in order to rethink innovation management in this new framework. \nAurélien Acquier is a Professor at ESCP Business School\, Associate Dean for Sustainability Transition and Co-Director of the Deloitte – ESCP Chair in Circular Economy.  \n\nThis conference will be held by videoconference. Registration by return mail is advised.  \nThe Zoom link is the following:  \n Link : https://mines-paristech.zoom.us/j/94696628007?pwd=cmNheXVVTnFNcmovZjhsTUN1SE53dz09 \n  \nIn order to secure the conference\, a waiting room will be set up to control the participants. Anthropology of field sciences \nIntroduction to the discussion by: Abdoulaye Diaw \nBack cover: At the beginning of this 21st century\, in reaction to the dizzying disappearance of biodiversity\, French biologists are inventing a new kind of great naturalist expedition. They set sail for the oceans and tropical forests to collect and conserve animals and plants\, both in situ in the countries concerned and ex situ in the collections of the world’s major natural history museums. \nEmbarked since 2005 in this scientific adventure unique in the world\, Elsa Faugère proposes in this book a reflexive anthropology of the field sciences mobilized in these expeditions (taxonomy\, systematics and anthropology). \nShe shows all the richness and depth of scientific expeditions where scientific\, political\, media\, financial\, logistical and perhaps above all human and relational dimensions are mixed and combined in sometimes difficult or even dangerous conditions. \nElsa Faugère\, Le making-of des grandes expéditions. SUMMARY:Business\, Responsibility and Civilization seminar with Romain Laufer\, Professor Emeritus\, HEC-Paris
DESCRIPTION:Business\, Responsibility and Civilization seminar \n \nRomain Laufer \nProfessor Emeritus\, HEC-ParisManagement\, \nResponsabilité et Démocratie Tocqueville thinker of administration Conference organized on the Zoom platform \nWe know Tocqueville as a thinker of democracy and revolution\, we know less about Tocqueville as a thinker of the administration\, and hence the way in which his writings make it possible to link administration and democracy on the one hand\, and administration and revolution on the other. SUMMARY:i3 seminar “Analysis of online participation” will welcome E. Marty\, N. Pignard-Cheynel & B. Sebbah
DESCRIPTION:Internet users’ participation in the journal Le Monde’s live-blog during the DSK case \nEmmanuel Marty\, Lecturer\, Research Group on Communication Issues (Gresec) – Université Grenoble Alpes. \nNathalie Pignard-Cheynel\, Professor of Digital Journalism at the Academy of Journalism and Media (University of Neuchâtel)\, Associate Researcher at the Mediation Research Centre (Crem\, University of Lorraine). \nBrigitte Sebbah\, Lecturer\, LERASS (Laboratoire d’Études et de Recherches Appliquées en Sciences Sociales)\, University of Toulouse 3- Paul Sabatier. \n  \nArticles to read to prepare for the seminar: \n\nEmmanuel Marty\, Nathalie Pignard-Cheynel and Brigitte Sebbah (2016). Internet users’ participation and news framing: The Strauss-Kahn case–related Live Blog at Le Monde.fr. New Media & Society\, 19(12): 1964-1982. \n\nOur presentation will focus on the analysis of reader-contributors’ participation through live blogging\, or online and live web coverage of an event. This work focuses specifically on the live coverage provided by lemonde.fr during the “DSK affair” in May 2011. This work has been the subject of two publications we would like to present together to show the methodological path we have followed. The first part consists of the analysis of a corpus relating to the first 24 hours (out of 40) of this coverage and includes two documents: the live stream and all the messages submitted by Internet users\, of which only a tiny part has been published (1%). The comparative analysis of the two facets of this participation leads us to analyze the place of the ordinary voice of internet users in journalistic production by questioning the process of journalistic moderation of participation and the way in which it contributes\, alongside the enunciative postures of internet users\, to constructing an identity of the “public” of live events. This qualitative approach\, which consists of manually identifying the contributions of internet users according to their register of expression\, was then extended by a lexicometric analysis of the exhaustive corpus of messages submitted and the live publication. The comparative approach was then applied\, using the operational concept of “media framing of participation” to question the topical representativeness of the published live performance vis-à-vis all the contributions\, in conjunction with the analysis of the registers of expression previously implemented. By successively presenting these two approaches on the same subject our goal is to show how qualitative and quantitative methods for analyzing the discourses of online participation can articulate and inform each other. \nTo receive the texts and indicate your attendance at this seminar session\, please register here.  \nThe “Analysis of Online Participation” (APeL) seminar aims to develop reflection on approaches to the use of data about the online usage and participation. The seminar is a place for researchers from various backgrounds to meet and exchange knowledge\, practices and know-how. At each session\, the seminar guests present and discuss the “making of” of one of their researches: construction of the survey\, specificities of the data engineering implemented\, tools for capturing / building corpora\, analysis strategies and tools used\, etc. \nThe seminar is open to all. SUMMARY:Mines-Paris PSL's Future of Industry and Labour Chair
DESCRIPTION:The Future of Industry and Labor Chair of Mines-Paris PSL is pleased to invite you to session n°4 of the seminar Autonomy and Responsibility in Organizations:\n  \nKOUMBIT\, a self-management experiment in the digital world  \nSuzy Canivenc\, Teacher-Researcher\, FIT2 Chair \nRegistration is mandatory via the following link: https://forms.gle/FYGdZRubAx8omJzq9 \n \nIf you have any questions\, please contact: : chaire-fit2@mines-paristech.fr \nPresentation of the session: \nKoumbit is a self-managed non-profit organization (NPO) in Quebec\, specialized in hosting and developing websites for social organizations (international cooperation and solidarity organizations\, unions\, activist groups\, environmental\, educational\, artistic and cultural organizations). \nThis organization was the subject of an in-depth study during a post-doctoral internship carried out in 2011\, when the structure had 24 workers and had been in existence for 10 years. From this study was drawn a monograph available on the ARO platform: https://www.la-fabrique.fr/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Koumbit-en-ligne.pdf\n\nLike many self-managed structures\, Koumbit is experimenting with an atypical organizational form that is shaking up our ways of thinking. It advocates a total absence of formal hierarchy in favor of a total sharing of decisions between all members of the association\, whether in terms of work organization\, strategy\, governance or values. Strong principles that give rise to original practices in terms of organization and human resources management\, but which are not without limits. \nPresentation of the seminar : \n\n The Future Chair of Industry and Labor of Mines – Paris Sciences et Lettres organizes a monthly seminar on the rise of autonomy in organizations. The objective of this seminar is to discuss concrete experiences of setting up an organization that favors employee autonomy by analyzing the difficulties encountered\, the impact on operational performance and employee satisfaction\, the construction of “words to say it” … During the first year\, we will focus on companies where different national or professional traditions coexist and on the support of middle management. \n

SUMMARY:Seminar "Analysis of online participation” with Benjamin Loveluck
\n“The little cat is dead. Numerical dimensions of a mobilization linked to the animal cause”. \nArticles : \nBientôt disponibles \nThe seminar aims to develop current reflections about the use of digital data in the analysis of online practices and forms of participation. With the explosion of online communication\, a richer and greater amount of information has become available to researchers to document practices in a variety of domains: consumption\, political behavior\, production of knowledge\, sociability\, democratic participation\, controversy\, etc. Evidence of practices and of communication occurring in these domains are now available on various media: forum\, discussions lists\, blogs\, online press\, social networks\, dedicated exchange platforms\, etc. Over the last few years\, the use of these data for research purposes has become widespread but there is still little debate on the compilation of corpora\, the methods of analysis and the articulation between digital analyses and more classical fieldwork in social science. \nWe hope to have the pleasure of seeing you at this session\, and invite you to register here to receive the text and the zoom login link. \nMore on the seminar  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar will host Pierre Charbonnier CNRS Researcher
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar will host \nPierre Charbonnier \nCNRS Researcher \nLaboratoire interdisciplinaire d’études sur les réflexivités (LIER)\, CNRS-EHESS\, Paris \nto discuss his book \nAbondance et liberté \nUne histoire environnementale des idées politiques \nIntroduction to the discussion by Roman Solé-Pomies \nAbundance and freedom. An environmental history of political ideas \nBack cover: In the form of a masterful philosophical and historical investigation\, this book offers an untold story: an environmental history of modern political ideas. It therefore does not aim to look for the seeds of ecological thought in the latter (as others have done)\, but rather to show how all of them\, whether or not they claim an ecological ideal\, are informed through a certain conception of their relationship to the earth and the environment. \nAs it turns out\, the main political categories of modernity have been based on the idea of an improvement of nature\, a decisive victory over its greed\, and unlimited access to earthly resources. The political society of free\, equal\, and prosperous individuals desired by the moderns\, especially with the rise of industry assimilated to progress\, has thus been thought as freed from the heaviness of the world. \nHowever\, this pact between democracy and growth is today called into question by climate change and the disruption of ecological balances. It is therefore up to us to give a new horizon to the ideal of political emancipation\, on the understanding that it can no longer rest on the promises of infinite extension of industrial capitalism. To achieve this\, ecology must inherit from nineteenth-century socialism the capacity it had to react to the great geo-ecological shock of industrialization. But it must redeploy the imperative of protecting society in a new direction\, one that acknowledges the solidarity of social groups with their environments in a world transformed by climate change. \nPierre Charbonnier\, Abondance et liberté\, La Découverte\, 2020 \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. It is open upon registration. \nGuest seminar programme \nRegistration: please fill out this form

SUMMARY:Conference-Debate on Public Policies for Energy Renovation
DESCRIPTION:As part of its applied economics research program on energy efficiency\, CERNA is organizing a seminar on public policies to support energy renovation. \n2021 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for energy renovation policies: launch of a new version of MaPrimeRénov’\, definition of the objectives of the Energy Saving Certificates system\, debate on the proposals of the Citizen’s Convention on Climate Change\, and so on.  Energy renovation is at the heart of the recovery plan. What can we expect from these developments? Do they mark a real break with the policies pursued over the last 20 years?  Will they lead to an industrialization of energy renovation? Will global renovation succeed? These questions and others will be addressed during this conference-debate. \nTo discuss these different questions\, this seminar brings together economists\, industrialists\, and activists from the energy renovation sector: \n\nMarc Benayoun\, Executive Director of the EDF Group in charge of the Customers\, Services and Territories Division\nMatthieu Glachant\, Professor of Economics at MINES ParisTech and Director of CERNA\nOlivier Sidler\, spokesman for NegaWatt\nFrédéric Utzmann\, president and co-founder of EFFY\n\nThe link to register: https://mines-paristech.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f7df200d5ca4e43da8844114a&id=e56b812c0d&e=8ef5396f99 \n
