SUMMARY:8th ARAMOS Congress
DESCRIPTION:Organizational and managerial innovation in health care Theoretical framework\, impact analysis on professional practices and organization of care\nSpecific Expectations on Management Feedback \nManagerial innovation\, organizational innovation\, there is no shortage of terms to support this new trend in the health sector. Article 51 is an illustration of the mobilization of public authorities in this field.\nFrom the point of view of management research\, this subject offers many opportunities.\nThe first concerns the conceptual definition of managerial or organizational innovation (the distinction between the two representing an issue in itself) in the field of health. Various works (notably those of Kimberly and Hamel) have provided analytical frameworks for situating this type of innovation in relation to technological innovations. It remains to situate this relationship between organisational and technological innovation in the specific context of health\, particularly in the case of digital (telemedicine devices\, connected tools\, etc.) and massive data processing (machine learning algorithms). There is often some confusion in the relationship between technological innovation and organization. In some cases\, it is the forgetting of the organizational context in which the technology is embedded that leads to neglecting its uses (for example\, a telemedicine device is introduced without understanding its uses in a given organizational context). In other cases\, it is the link between the technology and the organisation within an innovative approach that is unclear (for example\, Internet applications or portals for remote patient monitoring need to be thought through with coordinating nurses and modes of organisation in the exchange of information).\nThe second opportunity for analysis aims to clarify the content of these innovations. It is interesting to understand what is put under the terms “management” and “organisation”: new coordination professions\, e-health technologies\, patient engagement\, teamwork\, multi-professional communication along a patient pathway\, the approaches seem quite broad and deserve to specify the contours of organisational innovation in health.\nThe third is to provide evidence of their added value in terms of quality of care\, cost control\, patient experience\, or professional satisfaction. The evaluation modality is itself a research topic\, as the doctrine on the subject is not settled\, particularly in the link between quantitative and qualitative approaches\, or in the consideration of a “realistic” evaluation during development. \nRegistration deadline: September 25\, 2020 \nSeminar video conference \nRegistration 8th ARAMOS Congress \nProgramme 8ème congrès ARAMOS \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Seminar "Business\, Responsibility and Civilization".
DESCRIPTION:The Chair of Business Theory is pleased to invite you to the next session of the seminar “Business\, Responsibility and Civilization”. \non July 9\, from 4 to 6 p.m.\, around \nMichel Sot \n“Writing the history of a Church to manage it well: about bishops in the 9th century” \n                                      \nConference organized on the Zoom platform \nIn order to manage the number of participants we invite you to register for the event by clicking here. \nhttps://zoom.us/j/94106813993?pwd=SFJqVnJJRk90RjFnRXdXZW00S3pXZz09 \nMichel Sot is Professor of History of the High Western Middle Ages: he began his career at the University of Paris X-Nanterre in 1970 and joined the University of Paris-Sorbonne in 2003. His work focuses on the writing of history during the High Middle Ages. In this seminar\, he proposes to examine how a particular historiographical genre (the gesta episcoporum)\, of which there are some twenty examples\, corresponded to a political\, religious and cultural reorganization of the West\, that of the Carolingian Empire. These Gesta reveal the modes of construction and justification of acts of good management in the bishoprics of the West. \n\nThe current health crisis is forcing us to reorganise a few things\, and as a consequence the meeting initially planned with prof. Leixnering and Doralt has been postponed to October 20. With our thanks for your understanding!  \n\nHoping to see you there\,  \nThe team of the Chair of Business Theory \nchaire-te@mines-paristech.fr \nhttp://www.te.mines-paristech.fr \n  \n

SUMMARY:Guest seminar with Lilly Irani
DESCRIPTION:Guest seminar with \nLilly Irani \nAssociate Professor\, Communication\, Science Studies\, Computer Science\, \nCritical Gender Studies\, Design Lab | University of California San Diego \n  \nChasing Innovation: \nMaking Entrepreneurial Citizens \nin Modern India \nIntroduction to the discussion by Carole-Anne Tisserand \n  \nPublisher’s presentation : Can entrepreneurs develop a nation\, serve the poor\, and pursue creative freedom\, all while generating economic value? In Chasing Innovation\, Lilly Irani shows the contradictions that arise as designers\, engineers\, and businesspeople frame development and governance as opportunities to innovate. Irani documents the rise of “entrepreneurial citizenship” in India over the past seventy years\, demonstrating how a global ethos of development through design has come to shape state policy\, economic investment\, and the middle class in one of the world’s fastest-growing nations. \nDrawing on her own professional experience as a Silicon Valley designer and nearly a decade of fieldwork following a Delhi design studio\, Irani vividly chronicles the practices and mindsets that hold up professional design as the answer to the challenges of a country of more than one billion people\, most of whom are poor. While discussions of entrepreneurial citizenship promise that Indian children can grow up to lead a nation aspiring to uplift the poor\, in reality\, social\, economic\, and political structures constrain whose enterprise\, which hopes\, and which needs can be seen as worthy of investment. In the process\, Irani warns\, powerful investors\, philanthropies\, and companies exploit citizens’ social relations\, empathy\, and political hope in the quest to generate economic value. Irani argues that the move to recast social change as innovation\, with innovators as heroes\, frames others—craftspeople\, workers\, and activists—as of lower value\, or even dangers to entrepreneurial forms of development. \nWith meticulous historical context and compelling stories\, Chasing Innovation lays bare how long-standing power hierarchies such as class\, caste\, language\, and colonialism continue to shape opportunity in a world where good ideas supposedly rule all. \nLilly Irani\, Chasing Innovation. The response of the international institution was to describe itself as a “Knowledge Bank”\, claiming by this term that its primary value lied in its development knowledge\, while acknowledging the political nature and the need to transform this knowledge. This thesis takes up this self-description and investigates the current nature of this Knowledge Bank. To this end\, ethnographic studies\, mainly in West Africa\, were conducted on knowledge that the World Bank itself has identified as one of its prominent concern: the knowledge embedded in its development interventions (projects\, technical assistance). By discussing mainly the literature in anthropology of development\, and building upon relevant work in Science and technology studies\, the thesis identifies an “expertise as operation” at the heart of these interventions. This expression denotes the actions undertaken by World Bank experts (consultants\, project managers) to construct or transform the identities and problems of individual or collective entities\, through the production and mobilisation of knowledge about them\, and often by ensuring that these entities seize upon this knowledge about themselves. The choice made in the thesis to analyse economic interventions (support for the competitiveness of an economic sector\, support for the development of entrepreneurship\, or research on industrial policies) allows for an in-depth analysis of the much criticized neoliberal and “economicist” policy of the World Bank\, so as to show that the politics of the institution cannot be reduced to those aspects\, and is primarily embedded in these operations of expertise on identities and problems.

It is based on an ethnographic inquiry into the operations of this medical humanitarian NGO as they take place. Observing members of MSF providing healthcare to migrants in Paris and to inhabitants of a slum in Nairobi\, evaluating and planning projects in their headquarters\, we see them tinker together the sometimes-incompatible goals of a seemingly simple humanitarian mission: medical assistance to the vulnerable around the world. Our pragmatist approach consists in arguing that analysis of international aid must account for how humanitarians find a way to hold together the ambiguities\, and even the contradictions\, of this claimed mission in the ambivalent effects humanitarian aid in practice.\nTo this end\, we ask how MSF selects those it seeks to assist around the world. Our response entails close description of the instrumentation of triage: the problematic processes of elaborating and using tools that support the reflexive choice of beneficiaries around the globe. We then make three analytical gestures\, allowing us to contribute to ongoing discussions in anthropology on global assemblages\, global spaces\, and global health. First\, we show how the processes of bordering\, territorializing\, and scaling that triage instruments support\, participate in producing humanitarian locations: humanitarian space\, the field\, medical platforms\, and headquarters. Second\, analysing the ways triage instruments script for those humanitarians claim to assist\, we argue that MSF gains humanitarian agency in the ways it relates to humanitarian beneficiaries: the tact and tactics of care\, the reciprocal recognition of beneficiaries in their need and of MSF’s need to help\, the acceptance of responsibility for this vulnerability coupled with an attempt to transfer responsibility to public health care systems. Third\, accounting for these instruments in terms of humanitarian technologies of intervention\, we demonstrate how MSF makes timely interventions into governing bodies and the bodies of the governed. Together\, our description of aid as it takes place and our analysis of the problems associated with humanitarian locations\, beneficiaries\, and technologies of intervention constitute what we call MSF’s humanitarian presence. This humanitarian presence indicates the ways MSF exists\, in their global physical extension\, in the health care they practice\, in their nongovernmental politics and their ethics of attention. This concept supports critique by indicating\, first\, the multiple and incompatible goods that are to inhere in humanitarian aid\, and second\, those specific instances when MSF has failed to do so.

SUMMARY:Seminar "Analysis of online participation " with Eric Dagiral\, Anne-Sylvie Pharabod and Aude Danieli
DESCRIPTION:Eric Dagiral\, Anne-Sylvie Pharabod and Aude Danieli  \nModes of engagement\, sharing and sociability associated with self-quantification practices \nAbstract : \nThe discussion will focus\, based on two articles (“Making room for numbers in self-tracking”\, and “Taking your 10\,000 steps\, really?”) and the current survey (ANR project “Quantiself”)\, on the analysis of engagement in self-tracking practices and on the apprehension of forms of sharing and exchange around the data generated. The session will be an opportunity to present the behind-the-scenes of the collective survey through questionnaires and in-depth interviews and the specificities inherent to working on digital practices that are at once banal\, tenuous and yet widely discussed. Finally\, initial elements of analysis relating to the forms of circulation and discussion of these practices and the figures produced will be presented. \nEric Dargiral\, Lecturer in Sociology at Paris Descartes University\, researcher at the Centre de recherche sur les liens sociaux – Cerlis\, Anne-Sylvie Pharabod\, Research Manager in the SENSE department of Orange Labs and Aude Danieli sociologist\, Paris Descartes University\, researcher at the Centre de recherche sur les liens sociaux – Cerlis\n \nArticles : \nFaire ses 10000 pas vraiment (Réseaux 2019) \nFaire place aux chiffres dans l’attention à soi (Réseaux 2019) \nThe seminar aims to develop current reflections about the use of digital data in the analysis of online practices and forms of participation. With the explosion of online communication\, a richer and greater amount of information has become available to researchers to document practices in a variety of domains: consumption\, political behavior\, production of knowledge\, sociability\, democratic participation\, controversy\, etc. Evidence of practices and of communication occurring in these domains are now available on various media: forum\, discussions lists\, blogs\, online press\, social networks\, dedicated exchange platforms\, etc. Over the last few years\, the use of these data for research purposes has become widespread but there is still little debate on the compilation of corpora\, the methods of analysis and the articulation between digital analyses and more classical fieldwork in social science. \nRegistrations open soon: The seminar is open to all. SUMMARY:Guest seminar with Dimitris Papadopoulos
DESCRIPTION:Guest seminar with \nDimitris Papadopoulos \nProfessor of Science\, Technology and Society \nFaculty of Social Sciences\, School of Sociology and Social Policy\, University of Nottingham \n \nExperimental Practice Technoscience\, Alterontologies\, \nand More-Than-Social Movements \n  \nIntroduction to the discussion by Mathilde Pellizzari \n  \nBack cover: In Experimental Practice Dimitris Papadopoulos explores the potential for building new forms of political and social movements through the reconfiguration of the material conditions of existence. Rather than targeting existing institutions in demands for social justice\, Papadopoulos calls for the creation of alternative ontologies of everyday life that would transform the meanings of politics and justice. Inextricably linked to technoscience\, these “alterontologies”—which Papadopoulos examines in a variety of contexts\, from AIDS activism and the financialization of life to hacker communities and neuroscience—form the basis of ways of life that would embrace the more-than-social interdependence of the human and nonhuman worlds. Speaking to a matrix of concerns about politics and justice\, social movements\, matter and ontology\, everyday practice\, technoscience\, the production of knowledge\, and the human and nonhuman\, Papadopoulos suggests that the development of alterontologies would create more efficacious political and social organizing. \nDuke University Press\, 2018 \n  \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. SUMMARY:Séminaire "Analyse de la Participation en Ligne (APeL)"
DESCRIPTION:Seminar “Analysis of online participation” \nDavid Chavalarias   \nPolitical activism in the age of social networks: the point of view of social macroscopes \nAbstract: \nA candidate has at least three levers at his disposal to win the votes of voters: convincing them of the relevance of his programme and ideas (positive campaigning)\, convincing them of the inadequacy or danger of their opponents’ programmes and ideas (negative campaigning)\, and finally\, making their name and that of their party familiar to the public. Taking the example of the French presidential election (2017)\, we study how politicians use social networks to activate these levers and how these actions are linked to those of their online activist communities on Twitter. We propose a set of quantitative measures at different scales to qualify the processes at work within political communities and show that communities have distinct ways of articulating with their leader’s strategies\, pointing to a heterogeneity in the forms of militant “division of labour”. We also show that variations in community strategies can identify temporary weaknesses or loss of confidence in a leader as well as the structural position of candidates in the political arena. We also identify an anomaly in the attitude of all candidates towards Marine Le Pen. \nDavid Chavalarias  is a researcher at CNRS : Centre d’Analyse et de Mathématique Sociales (CAMS) \nArticle : David Chavalarias\, Noé Gaumont\, Maziyar Panahi (2019)\, Hostilité et prosélytisme des communautés politiques. SUMMARY:Doctoral thesis defense of Quentin Dufour
DESCRIPTION:Quentin Dufour \nwill defend his thesis \nL’objectivation comptable de l’économie nationale. \nEnquête sur la fabrique du PIB \net des comptes nationaux français \n  \nAccounting objectivation of the national economy. \nAn inquiry into the making of the GDP and the French national accounts \n  \nÉcole Doctorale ED 543 Sciences de la Décision\, des Organisations\, de la Société et de l’Échange. Université Paris Sciences et Lettres\, thesis prepared under the supervision of Dominique Méda (IRISSO – Université Paris-Dauphine) and Alexandre Mallard (Centre Sociologie de l’Innovation-UMR 9217 – Mines ParisTech) \nbefore a jury composed of: \n\nM. Emmanuel DIDIER\, Directeur de recherche CNRS\, ENS-EHESS\, (President).\nM. Paul EDWARDS\, Professor\, Stanford University\, (Examiner).\nMme Florence JANY-CATRICE\, Professeure des universités\, Université Lille 1\, (Rapporteur).\nM. Alexandre MALLARD\, Directeur de recherche\, Mines Paristech\, (Thesis supervisor).\nMme Dominique MÉDA\, Professeure des Universités\, Université Paris-Dauphine\, (Thesis supervisor).\nMme Gwenaële ROT\, Professeure des universités\, Sciences Po Paris\, (Rapporteur)\n\n  \nSummary of the thesis \nNational accounts\, including the GDP indicator\, are the most shared and legitimate representation of the national economy. Made in France within a ministerial entity – INSEE’s Department of National Accounts – they convey a conception of the economy as an evolutionary (we call “growth” the variations of the economy over time) and global (all French production expressed in currency) object. Once made public\, they are marked by a form of accounting objectivity: for the majority of its users\, and despite many criticisms\, the accounting representation of the economy is seen as a solid and indisputable object\, a reference knowledge on macroeconomic reality. Based on a nine-month ethnographic survey within the National Accounts Department\, the thesis analyses the fabric of this accounting objectivity of the economy. At the crossroads of the sociology of quantification\, the sociology of science\, and the sociology of activity\, it questions the way in which the national accounts department produces and stabilizes a shared and reference knowledge on the national economy. The thesis describes the department as an organization structured around a distributed work of articulation of accounting categories and data (that mainly come from the French statistical system). Far from being a mechanical filling of accounting tables\, the accounting activity involves a real intervention on the data\, to match them to the accounting framework: identification\, collection\, formatting\, totalization\, arbitration\, stabilization\, narration\, iterations\, are operations that contribute to the consistency of a representation of the economy. The thesis shows that the global and evolutionary nature of the economy is not obvious\, but must be produced on a day-to-day basis. Its existence in the form of a global system of relationships\, as well as its ability to vary over time\, is the result of accounting activity. The national economy\, as we know it through the national accounts\, thus constitutes a possible and relatively singular way of objectifying the economy.

SUMMARY:Justice au travail\, a book by Vincent-Arnaud Chappe
DESCRIPTION:For twenty years\, the law of non-discrimination has been considerably extended. The qualification of « discrimination » is currently used in many instances to denounce numerous unequal treatments. \nBut what about its real uses? Why and how do people decide to report discrimination in the courts? What difficulties do they encounter? \nThis book focuses on the appropriation of the category of discrimination in labor litigation. Based on extensive ethnographic work with plaintiffs and legal intermediaries (CGT union or SOS Racisme)\, it retraces the difficult path of the victims before the labor courts (prud’hommes) and the strategies developed to make the law more effective. \nBased on the contributions of a pragmatist-oriented sociology of law\, the book shows how legal norms are capable of punctually restoring justice in the workplace. \nTurning law into a real lever for equality will depend on the ability of the advocacy organizations to reconcile legal grammar with a concern for the victims and a transformative horizon of social practices.

SUMMARY:CSI Guest seminar
DESCRIPTION:Guest seminar with \nAlexandre Rios-Bordes \nLecturer in contemporary history at the University Paris 7 Diderot \nand member of the Laboratory Identités\, Cultures\, Territoires (EA 337) \n  \nLes savoirs de l’ombre : \nla surveillance militaire des populations aux États-Unis (1900-1941) \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Roman Solé-Pomies \n  \nOn the eve of the First World War\, the US military intelligence\, previously occupied with distant conflicts\, turns to domestic issues. Within a few months\, powerful devices were discreetly deployed in the territory to identify and follow those who\, because of their activities\, their commitments or simply their opinions\, are deemed hostile to the national mobilization. This surveillance did never cease: in the post-conflict period\, in the name of the imperatives of “modern” war\, the whole population became a military issue justifying its perpetuation. \nThanks to a vertiginous dive into the archives\, proceeding through a historical ethnographic approach\, Alexandre Rios-Bordes takes us to the heart of the secret administrations. He shows us\, over the shoulder of those who spy\, a complex undertaking\, marked by ethical\, practical\, intellectual and political tensions. He deciphers the logic at work in this effort to accumulate knowledge on populations and thus retraces the institutionalization of a State surveillance at the heart of the democratic system. \nÉditions de l’EHESS\, 2018 \n  \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. It is open upon registration. \nContact and registration: Cornelius Heimstädt or Loïc Riom \n  \nDate: Tuesday 8 octobre 2019\, 11:00 am to 1:00 pm \nVenue: Mines ParisTech\, 60 bd St Michel\, 75006 Paris – Salle St Jacques \n  \nGuest seminar programme \n  \nPhoto source: Livres en scène\, réalisation Serge Blerald\, Editions EHESS

SUMMARY:Guest seminar
DESCRIPTION:  \nGay Hawkins \nProfessor at Western Sidney University\, Institute for Culture and Society \nco-author with Emily Potter and Kane Race of the book \n \nPlastic Water \nThe Social and Material Life of Bottled Water \nIntroduction to the discussion by Cornelius Heimstädt \n  \nHow did branded bottles of water insinuate themselves into our daily lives? Why did water become an economic good—no longer a common resource but a commercial product\, in industry parlance a “fast moving consumer good\,” or FMCG? Plastic Water examines the processes behind this transformation. It goes beyond the usual political and environmental critiques of bottled water to investigate its multiplicity\, examining a bottle of water’s simultaneous existence as\, among other things\, a product\, personal health resource\, object of boycotts\, and part of accumulating waste matter. Throughout\, the book focuses on the ontological dimensions of drinking bottled water—the ways in which this habit enacts new relations and meanings that may interfere with other drinking water practices. \nThe book considers the assemblage and emergence of a mass market for water\, from the invention of the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle in 1973 to the development of “hydration science” that accompanied the rise of jogging in the United States. It looks at what bottles do in the world\, tracing drinking and disposal practices in three Asian cities with unreliable access to safe water: Bangkok\, Chennai\, and Hanoi. And it considers the possibility of ethical drinking\, examining campaigns to “say no” to the bottle and promote the consumption of tap water in Canada\, the United States\, and Australia.

SUMMARY:Event in connection with the European research project SCALINGS (Scaling up Co-creation)
DESCRIPTION:Maja Horst \nDepartment of Media\, Cognition and Communication\, University of Copenhaguen \nScience communication as culture \nMaja Horst will give a public lecture on her latest work on scientific innovation and responsibility. The event is organized in the framework of the European project SCALINGS. \nMaja Horst is a professor in communication sciences\, and is head of the Department of Media\, Cognition and Communication at the University of Copenhaguen. Her current work focus on science communication as a cultural phenomenon\, scientific social responsibility\, the sociel role of universities\, and research communication through installations and events. \nHer presentation will be followed by a discussion introduced by Madeleine Akrich\, Research director at the Centre de sociologie de l’innovation\, Mines ParisTech\, Stefan Kuhlmann\, chair of the Department Science\, Technology\, and Policy Studies (STəPS) of the University of Twente\, and Jack Stilgoe\, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS) of University College London. \nThe European research project SCALINGS (Scaling up Co-creation) focuses on experimental forms of innovation and their replication. It aims at analyzing co-creation practices involving public and private actors\, experts and amateurs\, major companies and start-ups\, which are often developed as test beds\, living labs or experiments. What are the consequences of “co-creation”? How can the replication and scaling up of co-creation be envisaged? SCALINGS examines these issues in three areas\, robotics\, energy for urban applications and autonomous vehicles. \n  \nPhoto credit: Maja Horst\, University of Copenhagen

SUMMARY:The research seminar « Maintaining / supporting: fragility as a mode of existence » will welcome
\nHypothèses autour des enfants polyhandicapés \nWhat if fragile beings were resistant beings? Hypotheses about children with multiple disabilities \nMyriam Winance is a sociologist at the INSERM (National Institute for Health and Medical Research) in the CERMES3 (Centre for Research in Medicine\, Sciences\, Health\, Mental Health and Society). Her research interests focus on how the notion of disability is defined in our society\, on the one hand through policies and institutional arrangements\, and on the other hand through people’s practices and experience. At the crossroads between a political socio-history of disability\, sociology of health and science and technology studies\, her work questions the notions of care\, person\, body and disability. She is currently conducting an investigation that connects the history of the political categories under which children with multiple deficiencies are designated and stories of families who have a child with multiple disabilities. Based on this twofold survey\, she describes the different dimensions and forms taken by the “work of care” performed on a daily basis to take care of these children\, interact with them\, make them grow up… and correlatively how people involved in this work consider themselves and are considered –or disconsidered– as parent/child\, child/child with multiple disabilities\, child/special child\, etc. \n\n2018-2019 Seminar programme (and audio recording of the previous sessions)

SUMMARY:Séminaire "Analyse de la Participation en Ligne (APeL)"
