SUMMARY:Justice au travail\, a book by Vincent-Arnaud Chappe
DESCRIPTION:For twenty years\, the law of non-discrimination has been considerably extended. The qualification of « discrimination » is currently used in many instances to denounce numerous unequal treatments. \nBut what about its real uses? Why and how do people decide to report discrimination in the courts? What difficulties do they encounter? \nThis book focuses on the appropriation of the category of discrimination in labor litigation. Based on extensive ethnographic work with plaintiffs and legal intermediaries (CGT union or SOS Racisme)\, it retraces the difficult path of the victims before the labor courts (prud’hommes) and the strategies developed to make the law more effective. \nBased on the contributions of a pragmatist-oriented sociology of law\, the book shows how legal norms are capable of punctually restoring justice in the workplace. \nTurning law into a real lever for equality will depend on the ability of the advocacy organizations to reconcile legal grammar with a concern for the victims and a transformative horizon of social practices.

SUMMARY:CSI Guest seminar
DESCRIPTION:Guest seminar with \nAlexandre Rios-Bordes \nLecturer in contemporary history at the University Paris 7 Diderot \nand member of the Laboratory Identités\, Cultures\, Territoires (EA 337) \n  \nLes savoirs de l’ombre : \nla surveillance militaire des populations aux États-Unis (1900-1941) \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Roman Solé-Pomies \n  \nOn the eve of the First World War\, the US military intelligence\, previously occupied with distant conflicts\, turns to domestic issues. Within a few months\, powerful devices were discreetly deployed in the territory to identify and follow those who\, because of their activities\, their commitments or simply their opinions\, are deemed hostile to the national mobilization. This surveillance did never cease: in the post-conflict period\, in the name of the imperatives of “modern” war\, the whole population became a military issue justifying its perpetuation. \nThanks to a vertiginous dive into the archives\, proceeding through a historical ethnographic approach\, Alexandre Rios-Bordes takes us to the heart of the secret administrations. He shows us\, over the shoulder of those who spy\, a complex undertaking\, marked by ethical\, practical\, intellectual and political tensions. He deciphers the logic at work in this effort to accumulate knowledge on populations and thus retraces the institutionalization of a State surveillance at the heart of the democratic system. \nÉditions de l’EHESS\, 2018 \n  \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. It is open upon registration. \nContact and registration: Cornelius Heimstädt or Loïc Riom \n  \nDate: Tuesday 8 octobre 2019\, 11:00 am to 1:00 pm \nVenue: Mines ParisTech\, 60 bd St Michel\, 75006 Paris – Salle St Jacques \n  \nGuest seminar programme \n  \nPhoto source: Livres en scène\, réalisation Serge Blerald\, Editions EHESS

SUMMARY:Guest seminar
DESCRIPTION:  \nGay Hawkins \nProfessor at Western Sidney University\, Institute for Culture and Society \nco-author with Emily Potter and Kane Race of the book \n \nPlastic Water \nThe Social and Material Life of Bottled Water \nIntroduction to the discussion by Cornelius Heimstädt \n  \nHow did branded bottles of water insinuate themselves into our daily lives? Why did water become an economic good—no longer a common resource but a commercial product\, in industry parlance a “fast moving consumer good\,” or FMCG? Plastic Water examines the processes behind this transformation. It goes beyond the usual political and environmental critiques of bottled water to investigate its multiplicity\, examining a bottle of water’s simultaneous existence as\, among other things\, a product\, personal health resource\, object of boycotts\, and part of accumulating waste matter. Throughout\, the book focuses on the ontological dimensions of drinking bottled water—the ways in which this habit enacts new relations and meanings that may interfere with other drinking water practices. \nThe book considers the assemblage and emergence of a mass market for water\, from the invention of the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle in 1973 to the development of “hydration science” that accompanied the rise of jogging in the United States. It looks at what bottles do in the world\, tracing drinking and disposal practices in three Asian cities with unreliable access to safe water: Bangkok\, Chennai\, and Hanoi. And it considers the possibility of ethical drinking\, examining campaigns to “say no” to the bottle and promote the consumption of tap water in Canada\, the United States\, and Australia.

SUMMARY:Event in connection with the European research project SCALINGS (Scaling up Co-creation)
DESCRIPTION:Maja Horst \nDepartment of Media\, Cognition and Communication\, University of Copenhaguen \nScience communication as culture \nMaja Horst will give a public lecture on her latest work on scientific innovation and responsibility. The event is organized in the framework of the European project SCALINGS. \nMaja Horst is a professor in communication sciences\, and is head of the Department of Media\, Cognition and Communication at the University of Copenhaguen. Her current work focus on science communication as a cultural phenomenon\, scientific social responsibility\, the sociel role of universities\, and research communication through installations and events. \nHer presentation will be followed by a discussion introduced by Madeleine Akrich\, Research director at the Centre de sociologie de l’innovation\, Mines ParisTech\, Stefan Kuhlmann\, chair of the Department Science\, Technology\, and Policy Studies (STəPS) of the University of Twente\, and Jack Stilgoe\, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS) of University College London. \nThe European research project SCALINGS (Scaling up Co-creation) focuses on experimental forms of innovation and their replication. It aims at analyzing co-creation practices involving public and private actors\, experts and amateurs\, major companies and start-ups\, which are often developed as test beds\, living labs or experiments. What are the consequences of “co-creation”? How can the replication and scaling up of co-creation be envisaged? SCALINGS examines these issues in three areas\, robotics\, energy for urban applications and autonomous vehicles. \n  \nPhoto credit: Maja Horst\, University of Copenhagen

SUMMARY:The research seminar « Maintaining / supporting: fragility as a mode of existence » will welcome
\nHypothèses autour des enfants polyhandicapés \nWhat if fragile beings were resistant beings? Hypotheses about children with multiple disabilities \nMyriam Winance is a sociologist at the INSERM (National Institute for Health and Medical Research) in the CERMES3 (Centre for Research in Medicine\, Sciences\, Health\, Mental Health and Society). Her research interests focus on how the notion of disability is defined in our society\, on the one hand through policies and institutional arrangements\, and on the other hand through people’s practices and experience. At the crossroads between a political socio-history of disability\, sociology of health and science and technology studies\, her work questions the notions of care\, person\, body and disability. She is currently conducting an investigation that connects the history of the political categories under which children with multiple deficiencies are designated and stories of families who have a child with multiple disabilities. Based on this twofold survey\, she describes the different dimensions and forms taken by the “work of care” performed on a daily basis to take care of these children\, interact with them\, make them grow up… and correlatively how people involved in this work consider themselves and are considered –or disconsidered– as parent/child\, child/child with multiple disabilities\, child/special child\, etc. \n\n2018-2019 Seminar programme (and audio recording of the previous sessions)

SUMMARY:Séminaire "Analyse de la Participation en Ligne (APeL)"

SUMMARY:Seminar “Analysis of online participation”
DESCRIPTION:Marie Bergström \n“Quand l’Ined rencontre Meetic. \nBiography : Marie Bergström ist a sociologist. She is work as a researcher at Institut national d’études démographiques (Ined). Her research focuses on the sexuality\, the conjugality and the celibacy. 59\, pp. 395‑422. \n  \nThe seminar aims to develop current reflections about the use of digital data in the analysis of online practices and forms of participation. With the explosion of online communication\, a richer and greater amount of information has become available to researchers to document practices in a variety of domains: consumption\, political behavior\, production of knowledge\, sociability\, democratic participation\, controversy\, etc. Evidence of practices and of communication occurring in these domains are now available on various media: forum\, discussions lists\, blogs\, online press\, social networks\, dedicated exchange platforms\, etc. Over the last few years\, the use of these data for research purposes has become widespread but there is still little debate on the compilation of corpora\, the methods of analysis and the articulation between digital analyses and more classical fieldwork in social science. \nMore on the seminar \n

SUMMARY:Seminar "Analysis of online participation”
DESCRIPTION:Claire Balleys \n“L’incontrôlable besoin de contrôle. 17\, pp. 1‑23. http://journals.openedition.org/gss/3958 \nThe seminar aims to develop current reflections about the use of digital data in the analysis of online practices and forms of participation. \nMore on the seminar

SUMMARY:Guest seminar with Maria Eriksson et Pelle Snickars
DESCRIPTION:Guest seminar with \nMaria Eriksson and Pelle Snickars\nUmeå universitet\, Sweden \nco-auteurs with Rasmus Fleischer\, Anna Johansson and Patrick Vonderau of the book \nSpotify Teardown\nInside the Black Box of Streaming Music\n\n\n\nIntroduction to the discussion by Loïc Riom \n  \nAn innovative investigation of the inner workings of Spotify that traces the transformation of audio files into streamed experience. \nSpotify provides a streaming service that has been welcomed as disrupting the world of music. Yet such disruption always comes at a price. Spotify Teardown contests the tired claim that digital culture thrives on disruption. Borrowing the notion of “teardown” from reverse-engineering processes\, in this book a team of five researchers have playfully disassembled Spotify’s product and the way it is commonly understood. \nSpotify has been hailed as the solution to illicit downloading\, but it began as a partly illicit enterprise that grew out of the Swedish file-sharing community. Spotify was originally praised as an innovative digital platform but increasingly resembles a media company in need of regulation\, raising questions about the ways in which such cultural content as songs\, books\, and films are now typically made available online. \nSpotify Teardown combines interviews\, participant observations\, and other analyses of Spotify’s “front end” with experimental\, covert investigations of its “back end.” The authors engaged in a series of interventions\, which include establishing a record label for research purposes\, intercepting network traffic with packet sniffers\, and web-scraping corporate materials. The authors’ innovative digital methods earned them a stern letter from Spotify accusing them of violating its terms of use; the company later threatened their research funding. Thus\, the book itself became an intervention into the ethics and legal frameworks of corporate behavior. \n\nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. SUMMARY:Seminar “Analysis of online participation”
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Beauvisage\, Jean-Samuel Beuscart et Kevin Mellet\, \n“Numérique et travail à-côté. » \nThomas Beauvisage ist sociologist at SENSE Department (Sociology and Economics of Networks and Services) of Orange Labs. Jean-Samuel Beuscart ist researcher at Orange Labs and researcher fellow at LISIS (CNRS/Université de Paris Est Marne-la-Vallée).
\nL’équipe du projet ANR RESISTIC \nOlga Bronnikova\, Françoise Daucé\, Fabrice Demarthon\, Ksénia Ermoshina\, Alexander Kondratov\, Valery Kossov\, Benjamin Loveluck\, Francesca Musiani\, Bella Ostromooukhova\, Perrine Poupin\, Anna Zaytseva. \n

This is the focus of the investigations conducted by Origens. From a pragmatic perspective\, the question is no longer just to compose the pluralistic proliferation of expanding worlds: we must now learn to take care of worlds in the process of being undone. \nThe seminar will consider these questions based on in-depth surveys conducted by Origens in various fields: among farmers and peasants\, indigenous communities or “modern” organizations such as companies\, artistic groups\, or on digital fields. \nEmmanuel Bonnet\, teacher-researcher in management sciences at the Groupe ESC Clermont and at CRCGM (Centre de Recherche Clermontois en Gestion et Management) \nDiego Landivar\, Professor of economics at the Groupe ESC Clermont and Associate Researcher at the CERDI-CNRS-Université Clermont Auvergne \nAlexandre Monnin\, philosopher\, Research Director of Origens Medialab\, Professor at ESC Clermont\, and president of the association Adrastia \nCyprien Tasset\, sociologist\, Associate Researcher at the LCSP (Laboratoire du changement social et politique) of Université Paris 7-Diderot \nSee a presentation of Origens Media Lab \nPour des raisons d’organisation\, SVP annoncez votre présence à catherine.lucas@mines-paristech.fr \n2018-2019 Seminar programme (and audio recording of the previous sessions) \nContact: Jérôme Denis\, Anne-Sophie Haeringer\, Antoine Hennion or David Pontille \n  \n  \nIllustration de couverture : Opening ceremony for the Embassy fo Peru at Ris Orangis in 2002©Adel Tincelin \n \n

SUMMARY:Guest seminar with Sara Angeli Aguiton
DESCRIPTION:Guest seminar with \nSara Angeli Aguiton \nChargée de recherche CNRS\, Centre Alexandre-Koyré\, EHESS \nLa démocratie des chimères. Gouverner la biologie synthétique \n  \n  \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Clément Gasull \n  \nIs it possible to make bacteria produce fuel? Can DNA be cut and arranged at will to create functional and useful organisms? Can an extinct virus be re-manufactured in the laboratory and then sent by post to a researcher who ordered it over the Internet? Does public debate have influence on this type of biotechnology? Are “bioterrorism” prevention policies successfully addressing these laboratory objects? \nBased on a sociological survey conducted in France and the United States\, the book follows anthropologists who have embarked in laboratories to provide ethical guidance to research\, public debates that were organized to democratize synthetic biology\, or partnerships between FBI agents\, scientists\, industrialists and amateur biologists aiming to reconcile innovation and “biosafety”. \nIn contrast to analyses that celebrate the advent of “technical democracy” or “responsible innovation”\, the author turns these labels into a subject of study. She questions the close link between their early mobilization by innovation actors and the weakness of their effects on the direction taken by research. Even though they are “participatory”\, “collaborative”\, “interdisciplinary” and “reflexive”\, the devices through which synthetic biology is governed are structured by techno-industrial interests that influence the definition of issues and of the solutions to be implemented. Thus\, the book allows to understand how the risks induced by synthetic biology have been excluded from the regulatory devices: these devices have mainly focused on the prevention of contestation and terrorism\, two issues that only concern synthetic biology because they risk hindering its development. \nEditions Le bord de l’eau\, 2018 \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students. It is open upon registration. \nContact and registration: Félix Boilève or Clément Gasull

SUMMARY:Guest seminar CSI with Sylvain Piron Directeur d’études de l’EHESS
DESCRIPTION:Guest seminar with \nSylvain Piron \nDirecteur d’études de l’EHESS\, Centre de recherches historiques – CRH / Groupe d’anthropologie scolastique – GAS \n  \nL’occupation du monde \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Evan Fisher \n“Faced with the worsening environmental crises it has caused\, the industrial society seems to be struck with blindness. It is lulled by the illusion that everything will eventually work out\, thanks to the flexibility of the market\, technological innovation and the inventiveness of capital. A whole economic mythology thus hinders the reflection and perception of the gravity of the situation. In order to undo this mythology\, this book seeks to understand its history\, by combining two complementary avenues. The disaster we are moving towards to has been announced for half a century. Among the thinkers of political ecology of the years 1967-72\, Gregory Bateson and Ivan Illich’s backgrounds allow us to observe the emergence of this reflection\, then its occultation under the effect of the neo-liberal shift of the 1980s. But to grasp the power of the myth and its devastating effects\, we have to go back much further in time. The appetite for transformation of the natural world through human action corresponds to a general tendency of the West in the long term of the second millennium of the Christian era. This is what can be described as a dynamic of occupation of the world\, in the dual sense of an objective occupation by beings subjectively engaged in transforming it. \nThe scholastic theologians were the first to observe this phenomenon in the 13th century. Starting point of a reflection on economy\, their moral philosophy can nowadays provide critical arguments against the dogmas of contemporary economic thought. While political and sociological reflections have had many opportunities to rephrase their postulates\, economic thinking has remained trapped by assumptions that now give it an almost theological texture. This unthought is the first responsible for our inability to cope with current crises. \nThis long-running essay on history offers a global interpretation of the economic destiny of the West\, with a view to defend the need for another relationship to the world. It will be followed by a second volume that will present the formation of myths and modern economic concepts.” \nEditions Zones Sensibles\, 2018. \n  \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students.
