SUMMARY:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes Lucie Gerber
DESCRIPTION:The CSI Guests Seminar welcomes \nLucie Gerber \n  \nHistorian of science\, CNRS research fellow (SAGE\, University of Strasbourg) and associate researcher at the University of Lausanne (FADO\, Institut des humanités en médecine) \n  \nto discuss her book \nLe laboratoire des esprits animaux \nModéliser le trouble mental à l’ère de la psychopharmacologie \n  \n \nIntroduction to the discussion by Léone-Alix Mazaud \nBack cover: Au 20e siècle\, rongeurs et primates ont servi de cobayes pour comprendre les troubles de l’esprit et évaluer leurs remèdes. \nIn the 20th century\, rodents and primates were used as guinea pigs to understand mental disorders and evaluate their remedies. How did scientists mobilize animal experimentation to shed light on phenomena usually considered to be specifically human? From psychologist Skinner’s “anxious” rats to his colleague Harlow’s “depressed” monkeys\, from pharmaceutical industry tests to neurochemical simulations of Alzheimer’s disease\, this book traces the history of these animal models in the age of psychopharmacology. It shows how these experimental practices have shaped our conceptions of mental\, cognitive and behavioral disorders. \nThe Guest Seminar Series is organized collectively by the CSI PhD students.
