Next session of the Aventures Industrielles seminar
In 2001, Nicolas Chartier and Guillaume Paoli came up with an idea for a start-up: to sell cars online, starting with cheaper 0 km vehicles purchased from dealers with overstocks. With initial success, they set about removing the irritants for buyers: taking care of administrative formalities, arranging credit, taking back the customer’s car, customized delivery, etc. They then have to set up agencies, a car reconditioning plant, and solve routing and delivery problems. They are faced with formidable technical, logistical and administrative problems. To overcome them, sometimes at the cost of severe crises, they discovered the virtues of sharing decisions and initiatives with their staff, and the often overlooked benefits of Lean management. In this way, the idea of a two-person start-up was gradually transformed into an astonishing collective adventure.
