Collaborative computing and the organisation of work – Beyond promises
Through field studies and numerous testimonials, this book, produced by the FIT2 Chair (Future of industry and work – Training, innovation, territories), examines the ambivalent results that the use of these tools produces on work organization.
Summary: A new wave of digital tools, known as collaborative tools, has been introduced into organizations with the proliferation of remote work. In most cases, these tools have been added to existing communication systems, creating a “mille-feuille” phenomenon that leads to hyper-connectivity and cognitive overload. The growing malaise of employees in the face of this chaotic digitalization has been documented in several surveys.
This book, produced by the FIT2 Chair, examines the ambivalent results that the use of these tools has on the organization of work through field studies and numerous testimonials. Far from the promises of solution providers, collaborative tools have no magical power to effect organizational change. In fact, the uncontrolled use of collaborative tools has a number of perverse effects on efficiency and quality of work life. The implementation of innovative practices appropriate for the context of hybrid work requires the discussion and regulation of its use within the context of ‘real work’.
This analysis of the blind spots and points of vigilance in the use of collaborative tools will be of interest to transformation managers, HR directors, CIOs, local managers and consultants interested in the use of these tools to improve the quality of work.
