Brief Overview
Eco-labels are everywhere. In the French hospitality sector, nearly 20% of establishments have committed to obtaining an eco-label. Does this reflect a genuine shift in practices or merely an attempt to appear more environmentally friendly? The wide variety of these labels, issued by public or private organizations, makes it difficult to see the big picture The European Ecolabel, a public certification program established in 1992, is distinguished by its high standards and its commitment to eco-design and environmental management. Its implementation encompasses the hotel’s technical systems, management policies, employee practices, and guest behavior. Using the example of the Paris-based Hôtels en Ville collection, which decided in 2022 to obtain eco-labels for all of its properties, this session will explore how an eco-label—initially viewed as a compliance requirement—is gradually becoming a framework that shapes the business.
