Design engineer recruitment

To apply, go through the CNRS platform between June 10 and July 10: https://carrieres.cnrs.fr/concours-externes-des-ingenieurs-et-techniciens-h-f/

Mission

The assignment involves the design and processing of qualitative and quantitative (mixed-method) data collection tools, with particular emphasis on audio, video and digital data. The research engineer recruited will manage data collection, processing and study systems. He/she will guarantee and validate the quality of the data produced and the processing carried out.

Activities

The design engineer will be involved in the deployment of major research facilities for the collection and analysis of interaction data: the Observation Lab (behavioral data capture platform and mobile activity recording studio), the Studio Design (low- and mid-tech creative space) and the Hyve-3D (immersive design and visualization system).

He/she will :

  • Contribute to the definition and implementation of methodological protocols enabling their use (video editing, data management, 3D model management, etc.).
  • Contribute to the processing of collected data
  • Maintain, manage supplies and reservation logistics for this equipment.
  • Provide support to researchers and students, particularly in the context of scientific experiments using these tools: define experimental plans, draft scientific communications, etc.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of teaching activities using this equipment, in collaboration with the team’s researchers and PhD students The person recruited may be required to travel occasionally to sites in France or abroad.

Skills

  • Methods for collecting and analyzing audio-video and physiological data (eye tracking and others).
  • Knowledge of the following qualitative and quantitative analysis methods: grounded theory; thematic analysis; open coding; axial coding; factor analysis; uni- and multivariate correlation analysis; classification; regression; randomized controlled studies; datamining techniques; automatic language processing.
  • General knowledge of legal frameworks relating to data processing in the social sciences and humanities.

Operational skills

  • Master data pre-processing operations: data formatting, validity and quality checks, handling missing data, variable transformation.
  • Know how to manage multi-channel video and audio streams, under the diversity of video formats and encoding protocols
  • Mastery of one or more video and audio editing tools
  • Mastery of the R, Python and SQL languages
  • Know how to write written and oral presentations (report writing, participation in research article writing)
  • Mastery of the Office suite.
  • English language: be able to read, understand and write in English. Level B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Behavioural skills :

  • Travail en équipe (notamment avec les chercheurs impliqués lors de l’interprétation des données),
  • Curiosité intellectuelle (être capable d’appréhender des objets de recherche variés)
  • Sens critique
  • Autonomie.
  • Teamwork (particularly with researchers involved in data interpretation),
  • Intellectual curiosity (ability to grasp a variety of research topics)
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Autonomy.

Context

The Institut Interdisciplinaire de l’Innovation is a joint research unit (UMR 9217) with a staff of over 225, including around 80 researchers and 120 PhD students, spread over 3 sites: École polytechnique, Télécom Paris and Mines Paris PSL. Its interdisciplinary approach (essentially economics, management and sociology) focuses on the multiple dimensions of innovation (technological, societal and organizational). Researchers are in contact with the various players involved in innovation (companies, public authorities, associations, social movements). The laboratory has created and uses several technical research platforms, such as Studio Design, L’observation Lab and Hyve, as part of an Equipex CONTINUUM investment project (development of collaborative platforms), and allied to the PEPR ENSEMBLE project (Collaborative activities at a distance – under construction). The engineer will reinforce the two teams working on these projects. The laboratory carries out research into collaboration and creativity in design situations, human/machine interaction and data visualization. He/she will work in the Interact team at Télécom Paris (located in Palaiseau) with researchers in design, psychology and interactional sociology.
